GREG ALEXANDER Greg Alexander is a world citizen who travels the planet to transmute all the quintessence of femininity on glazed paper. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, the ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he has found his home port. As a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which is able to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of beauty is fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, Hope, love, and gratitude… in a year of a global pandemic, business shutdowns, and a strange new way of life, these three words seem to have lost their place in our society. As we reach the final months of 2020, it almost feels surreal to think of how many days we have lived in this new sense of reality. Yet hope, love, and gratitude have the power to bring us back some semblance of normal… and that power lies in our hearts. We can begin to transform this broken world around us by nurturing a spirit of positivity and thankfulness within ourselves, and the first step is simply realizing the everyday joys and luxuries we have all been taking for granted for far too long. A year ago, if you had asked me what I loved about Tampa, I could have talked to you for hours straight—without once thinking to mention that I could, at any time, go to any number of excellent, insanely delicious local restaurants to enjoy exceptional cuisine and an amazing variety of dishes. I mean, there aren’t that many places on the globe where you can say that. And now, when gathering and laughing with loved ones in a restaurant seems like a far-off victory that is hard to achieve. Yet, in the midst of the struggle and uncertainty, there is hope in knowing that we are still here, and that we are in this together. Even when we may not be able to hug or shake hands with our friends and acquaintances, now is the time to realize that we can actually be closer to our loved ones than ever before. In the most critical times, there is still love and happiness, and we shall make the best of it. With love for our readers and our community at the center of our mission, we at Style Magazines focus on solid stories and valuable editorial content with love first, not commerce. In all that we do, we know that where there is love, transactions naturally follow. And luxury is all about love. The art of Excellence and the Essence of Luxury consists of creating an immersive and irreplaceable luxury experience, and that is what we choose to present to you each and every issue. As we continue to live life in this year of challenges, I encourage you who are so blessed to be able to afford the luxury lifestyle to take a moment to cultivate a heart of gratitude. What a gift to enjoy the beautiful things in life, such as purchasing luxury real estate in the prime areas at amazingly good rates, or having almost everything you desire delivered right to your front door. Most of all, the lifestyle of luxury offers us the opportunity to use our resources to help those in need. In a world where many are not as fortunate as us, the ability to donate to charities, provide for others, and even lend a helping hand is a true blessing. Yes, there is still so much of life that is just waiting to be enjoyed. Now that we are pretty much out of hurricane season, let’s step outside and soak up our beautiful autumn weather and watch a sunset or two. Even though we may be missing out on our wonderful annual events this season, we will be alright as we look into a brighter future full of hope. May we all get back to our senses, find gratefulness, and see that we will always be better off when we decide to come together and to act as one community, one nation. Now more than ever, may we understand the importance of love. Love, not fear, your neighbor! All in all, we are here to make your days more enjoyable. Together, let’s embrace hope, live in love, and grow in gratitude. All the best,

Sven J Bode Publisher

FLEUR DE MIRAVAL Rosé Champagne Ascends to the Peak of Perfection

The Jolie-Pitt and Perrin families, who made Miraval a global success story, are proud to announce their bold, new project: FLEUR DE MIRAVAL, the only Champagne house exclusively devoted to Rosé Champagne. On October 15, FLEUR DE MIRAVAL will launch a truly exceptional Rosé Champagne. Brad Pitt has been totally committed to creating this Champagne house, which is not some new “celebrity wine,” but an authentic project of wine growers combining their expertise, skills and passion. This new, family-run adventure is, now, more than ever, focused on excellence and inspired by the legend of Countess Fleur de Miraval*. The idea of FLEUR DE MIRAVAL sprang from the association of the two families, who had already united the wine world with that of the arts through the introduction of Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé in 2012, and a third family with roots in Champagne for six generations: the Péters family. The Péters family, established in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger,

have been making Champagne from their own grapes since 1919. Today Rodolphe Péters runs the 50 acre estate, 40 of which are Grand Cru vineyards mainly around Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs. Rodolphe’s Champagne is sold in some 70 countries around the world and delight all lovers of great Blanc de Blancs Champagnes. Rodolphe has long been a fan of the wines of Château de Beaucastel and is close to the Perrin family. “This project is, first and foremost, an artistic venture, because producing fine wines is a form of artistic creation,” explains Famille Perrin. “We have known Rodolphe Péters for many, many years and, like him, we are passionate about the great wines of the world. Yet, each time we’ve gotten together to taste fine, vintage Rosé Champagnes, we’ve come to the same conclusion: We love the aromas that these great Champagnes develop with age, especially when they lean towards Chardonnay, but we often also find heavy aromatic notes from the red wine, which

create an overall conflict with the harmony and nobility. This is why we wanted to create a different kind of Rosé Champagne that blended mature Chardonnay grapes with young Pinot Noir grapes.” This blend of Chardonnay grapes of different ages makes up 75% of the final FLEUR DE MIRAVAL blend. The remaining 25% is from young Pinot Noir grapes, which gives the wine its subtle, pink color. Its tangy notes of red currant and red raspberry energize the delicate minerality, salinity and iodized expression of the Chardonnay grapes. The wine is then aged on lees in the dark cellars in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for three years before being released. Because Champagne is particularly sensitive to ultraviolet rays and sunlight, which can easily damage the wine, each Fleur de Miraval bottle is lacquered so that the wine is never exposed to light until the day the bottle is opened.

“FLEUR DE MIRAVAL ROSÉ IS THE CULMINATION OF FIVE YEARS OF WORK, RESEARCH AND TASTING DONE IN THE UTMOST SECRECY,” RODOLPHE PÉTERS ADDS. “IT IS ALSO A VERY EXCLUSIVE WINE AS ONLY 20000 BOTTLES WERE PRODUCED FOR THIS FIRST EDITION.”

STYLE MD

HAVE ANOTHER?

Maybe not. By Dawn Harris Sherling, M.D., F.A.C.P.

THE DATA AROUND THE RISKS OF ALCOHOL HAVE BEEN POURING IN FOR A WHILE.

20

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

STYLE MD

To say the thinking around alcohol consumption in the U.S. swings like a pendulum might be an understatement. Pendulums generally move predictably back and forth. The advice on whether we should drink and how much is probably more like a small boat (captained by someone who has imbibed a bit too much) on choppy seas—you never know in which direction it might be pulled or if it might capsize completely. At the turn of the 19th century, Benjamin Franklin is reported to have written that wine is “proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.” This thinking was far from universal and after vociferous campaigning, about 100 years later, Prohibition, making alcohol consumption illegal, was briefly the law of the land. This, as readers of history or watchers of gangster movies know, like a flaming hot tequila shot, did not go down smoothly. Rules around alcohol sales and consumption have been all over the place ever since. Well, now it’s 2020 and since agreeing on anything is definitely out, the medical powers that be have decided that it would be good time to re-examine our alcohol guidelines. For the past thirty years, the dietary guidelines on alcohol issued by the government every five years, have been pretty consistent—no more than two drinks a day for men, one for women. This year, it has been proposed that men should now also be limited to one drink. Although it hasn’t made it into the official suggestions yet, it has also been proposed that women should drink less than one drink, and perhaps really, no one should be drinking at all.

But wait! Isn’t some level of alcohol consumption supposed to be protective against heart disease? And the answer is yes—the guidelines we have been looking at for thirty years are based on the data that moderate alcohol consumption does indeed reduce risk of atherosclerotic heart disease. Unfortunately, over the last several decades, research detailing the risks of alcohol has been emerging, associating its consumption with various cancers, accidental deaths, and not-so-surprising rates of addiction. When a team of researchers aggregated the risks and benefits in an article that ran in the wellregarded medical journal, The Lancet in 2018, they proposed that the risks won out and there was no safe level of alcohol consumption they could recommend. And that’s fair. The data around the risks of alcohol have been pouring in for a while. All things considered, it probably isn’t great for us. But neither are French Fries or sugar, both of which probably contribute to as many, if not more, health problems than alcohol does (though probably fewer car accidents). You’d be hard pressed to find a medical professional who advocates consumption of fries and sugar, so adding alcohol to the list of things better avoided isn’t a great leap.

Dizzy yet? How can both studies be true? Well, first, it should be acknowledged that both studies are populationbased and not randomized trials and therefore not the best quality evidence. The people who drink a bit, but not too much, may also avoid too much sugar and exercise more. The people who don’t drink at all may have health problems, like diabetes, that make avoiding alcohol a good idea, but may cut their lives a bit short. It’s hard to know what exactly is contributing to the longevity. Could it be the alcohol? Sure. Could it be something else? Also yes. Let’s be honest. 2020 has been a rough year and pretty much one in which news we don’t want to hear keeps popping up like ice cubes in a Moscow Mule. In short, alcohol probably isn’t great for us healthwise, but I’ll raise a drink to hoping the guideline writers give us a break and hold off a little while on making it official.

Dr. Sherling is a general internist and clinical associate professor at Florida Atlantic University Schmidt College of Medicine. She is the author of several academic articles and a medical thriller, Not Quite Dead. Website: dawnharrissherling.com Twitter: @dharrissherling

But like that boat rocking back and forth, another study published in 2018 in Circulation, another wellregarded medical journal, noted that moderate alcohol consumption (which they defined as 0.5 to 1 drink a day for women and 0.5-2 drinks a day for men) was a marker for longevity.

REFLECTING THE MINIMALIST PHILOSOPHY THAT UNDERPINS NEW ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST

In 2009, Rolls-Royce announced a new addition to its portfolio that offered something entirely different to its flagship Phantom. This product resonated with a new group of men and women who responded to the marque’s relentless pursuit of perfection in design, engineering and craftsmanship, but sought a more modest and minimalist expression of Rolls-Royce. The execution of the first Goodwood Ghost, and its laser focus on meeting the demands of its clients, was an unmitigated success, and over the course of its ten-year lifecycle, this transformative motor car became the most successful product in the company’s 116-year history. Ghost’s formidable success was vital in enabling the brand to scale up production, invest in its capabilities and establish Rolls-Royce as the truly global brand it is today. Additionally, Ghost’s decade-long market presence enabled the marque’s Luxury Intelligence Specialists to gather vital information about developing behaviours in how Ghost clients use their motor car, how they commission it and how they perceive Rolls-Royce. These highly successful and diverse entrepreneurs and founders, who selected this product to celebrate their ongoing ascension, were citizens of the world – they had been educated abroad, they travelled extensively and experienced Rolls-Royce in many cultures.

Due to Ghost’s energetic, dynamic personality, these clients came to realise that the RollsRoyce brand could offer more than a chauffeurdriven experience. Indeed, in the United States of America and areas of Europe, clients were self-driving their Ghost from the very early stages of its introduction. Meanwhile, in Asia, clients were engaging heavily in the connected technology on board, be it for business or pleasure. Across all markets, when clients commissioned their Ghost they asked the marque’s representatives about the driving experience, even if they had selected an extended wheelbase. During the weekend, this business tool morphed into a discreet celebration – clients would switch to the driver’s seat and relish a trip to a restaurant or second home with their friends and family. They celebrated this breadth of character, and this reflected in less formal colourways and more personalisation in the driver’s eyeline. These were profound learnings. Meanwhile, at Goodwood, significant advances were being made with the marque’s proprietary aluminium spaceframe architecture. First used on Phantom, then Cullinan, this spaceframe is unique to Rolls-Royce and enables the brand’s designers and engineers to develop an authentically super-luxury product, free from the constraints of platforms used to

underpin high-volume vehicles. As Ghost clients required even more of their motor car, Rolls-Royce used its architecture to respond, incorporating technology such as all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering in Ghost, unlocking an entirely new, purposeful personality. Concurrently, the design team were tracking an emerging movement that came to define Ghost’s aesthetic treatment. It spoke of a shifting attitude among Ghost clients in the way success is expressed. Named ‘Post Opulence’ internally, it is characterised by reduction and substance. In service to this, exceptional materials must be selected and celebrated. Design must be limited, intelligent and unobtrusive. This philosophy is the antithesis of ‘premium mediocracy’, a term coined by the fashion cognoscenti. This refers to products that use superficial treatments, such as large branding or, in the context of motor cars, busy stitching and other devices that create an illusion of luxury by dressing products lacking in substance in a premium skin. The collective result is new Ghost. This is a motor car precisely tailored to its clients, that appears perfect in its simplicity, that is underpinned by remarkable substance, that is less but better.

A message from Dr. Jinny Gunn: “My first experience with breast cancer came when I was a teenager and my beloved aunt was diagnosed in her early 40’s. I watched her fight a long, painful and emotional journey with

a disease that ultimately took her life. The profound effect of this experience fueled my desire to pursue a career caring for women and men diagnosed with breast cancer. Furthermore, this shaped my commitment to provide patients with personal and caring medical staff during one of life’s most difficult times. Fortunately, there have been countless advances in the treatment of breast cancer since my aunt’s diagnosis leading to greater survival rates and increased hope. I am passionate about providing innovative and integrative care to my patients while realizing the importance of the body, mind and soul connection in healing. While each healing journey is unique, I am happy to extend hugs and prayers to my patients who request it, as well as provide nutritional and spiritual information, all of which are shown to improve the overall health and wellness of patients. AUTOMOTIVE LUXURY EXPERIENCED IN A COMPLETELY NEW WAY The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class The S-Class exemplifies the allure of MercedesBenz, combined with the legendary and traditional engineering expertise that defines the luxury segment in the automobile industry. The new S-Class can be experienced with your senses – seeing, feeling, hearing and smelling – while offering numerous innovations in the areas of driver assistance, protection and interaction. MercedesBenz is shaping the next generation of individual mobility for our times with innovations that focus on people. The new S-Class utilizes digitization to create a car that responds empathetically to the needs and wishes of its driver and passengers. No other innovation in recent years has so radically changed the operation of a Mercedes-Benz as MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) and now the second generation of MBUX makes its debut in the new S-Class. The vehicle interior is even more digital and intelligent, as both the hardware and software have made great strides: brilliant displays on up to five large screens, in part with OLED technology, make the control of vehicle and comfort functions even easier. The possibilities for personalization and intuitive operation have become far more extensive. This certainly applies in the rear, but also for the driver: For example, for the first time the new 3D driver display allows a spatial view at the touch of a button. Creating a real three-dimensional effect is achieved without having to wear 3D glasses. The HUD provides augmented reality (AR) content. When navigating, for example, animated turn-off arrows (“fishbones”) are virtually and precisely projected onto the road lane. For the assistance functions, information from i.e. Active Distance Assist is shown. The image appears virtually at a distance of 32 feet, which corresponds with the display area to a monitor with a 77-inch diagonal screen. S500

The voice assistant “Hey Mercedes” is even more advanced and dialogue-capable through activation of online services in the Mercedes me App. Moreover, certain actions can be performed even without the activation keyword “Hey Mercedes”. These include accepting a telephone call. “Hey Mercedes” now also explains vehicle functions and answers general knowledge questions. In the S-Class the voice assistant can also be controlled from the rear seats.

Dimensional concept and interior design: generous ambience with a lounge-like feeling The S-Class has always been a place for comfortable travel and relaxed working. With the new generation, the interior has fully evolved into a “third place”, a refuge between the home and workplace. Nearly all comfort-related dimensions of the S-Class have been improved in the front as well as on the rear seats. The sense of space is accordingly generous. Exterior design: perfect proportions for a classical appearance With a short front overhang, a long wheelbase and a balanced rear overhang, the S-Class is designed as a classical sedan with perfect proportions. The wide track and flush-mounted wheels with modern designs give the vehicle a muscular look. The character lines have been greatly reduced along the sides with cleverly contoured surfaces and a sculptured look to create special light effects. The front section is also notable with its high-status radiator grille. The headlamps characterize the front of the car. With the three-point daytime driving light signature that is typical of the S-Class, now flatter and slightly smaller overall. The seamless door handles (standard) are a completely new development. They are electrically extended when the driver approaches, or the outer surface of the door handle is touched. Keyless access is provided by KEYLESS-GO. The dynamic appearance of the car is continued at the rear. Thanks to precisely designed, highly detailed interior features and certain animated functions, the rear lights contribute to the impression of high quality, making the new S-Class unmistakable in both their day and night design. “Luxury today is defined by comprehensive refinement. A luxurious driving experience depends on a host of factors and must appeal to all the senses. Traditionally, this also includes almost silent travel. However, this also includes making life easier for the customer, for example because intuitive operation and comprehensive connectivity save a great deal of time.” - Dirk Fetzer, Head of S-Class product management

|Giving thanks to those that feed us| B Y D A W N H A R R I S S H E R L I N G , M . D . , F. A . C . P.

Lately, I’ve been spending a great deal of time thinking about food. Essentially, this is because that’s what I do every day, but also because Thanksgiving is approaching. Most of what we know about Thanksgiving is apocryphal. The only thing we can count on as being true is that there was eating. And probably giving thanks. Which actually makes it a pretty good holiday. While we have plenty to be thankful for, now seems like a good time to be especially grateful for food. First off, if you didn’t make it yourself, someone else sure as heck did. Thanks to the restaurant workers spending hours behind a hot stove and the servers spending just as many hours running around. And now we have the delivery folks to extend thanks to. These men and women have become the newest addition to front line,

36

essential workers. And thanks to the home cooks (usually the moms, but also some dads) who toil without much in the way of gratitude for most of the year. They might be working for free, but their time is worth something—a lot actually. Thinking about what to make in the coming week and making sure the ingredients are on hand, requires a great deal of mental energy and also time—let’s estimate this at about ten minutes per dinner per day. If we consider the fact that the clean-up involved in a homecooked meal is often fifteen minutes or more, the dinner that our handy recipe said would take only 20-25 minutes to make, is now pushing up against an hour. Including time spent planning, time spent cooking, and then the clean-up, what’s the real cost of all this? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the

average hourly wage of a worker in the U.S. was around $27 in 2019. That means, on average, we value fifteen minutes of an American worker’s time at around $7. If ingredients to prepare a meal at home cost a family $15, but the time required to plan, shop for, make, and clean up the meal takes an hour, the meal really just cost about $42, but was free for you (if you weren’t the one who just fed everyone). The second group people to thank are the people who grow, harvest, and transport our food. About a year ago, my husband and I decided to plant a garden. Since we are Floridians, we also got a couple of citrus trees, a banana tree, and a mango tree. To date, we have successfully harvested about 2.5 lemons (one had a bad spot that needed to be cut out so we lost a half), a few bunches of green beans, and about five servings of broccoli. The herbs did okay until it got hot.

STYLE MD

Now we just have rosemary and okra. And we still can’t get the kids to eat the okra. It turns out that growing stuff is hard. Other things want to eat what you are growing, the plants get sick, and weeds can seem unstoppable. If it were up to me to grow food for my family, I don’t think we’d make it. And yet, I can go to the supermarket and pretty much get whatever produce or meat I want. It took a veritable army of people to get that food there, most of whom work for very little pay. They have now also become essential workers who deserve abundant thanks and probably a raise. The other people we have to thank are the ones that fed us from the time we were too small to even ask properly. And whether by bottle or breast, feeding babies is hard work. Newborns want to be fed every two hours, which can pretty much feel like constantly. Bottles need to be cleaned and formula is expensive. And contrary to popular opinion, breast feeding is only free if the one who is doing the feeding’s time is worth nothing. Many mothers spend hours directly feeding or expressing milk to be fed to their babies. At $27 an hour? Let’s just say that this coming Mother’s Day, you owe mom. Big time. So, while your Thanksgiving gathering may be a bit smaller this year or include a few Zoom or Facetime guests, it doesn’t have to be less meaningful. Give thanks, and if you can, maybe slip the delivery guy an extra twenty.

GROOMING

NAILED IT

Tips on having clean, attractive hands & feet, gents! Whether you want to admit it or not, nails are very important in hygiene, and overall looks. If you think people aren’t paying attention to your hands, you’re wrong. So here are some tips on keeping your hands, nails and feet looking groomed always. First things first, it all starts in the shower. Use a nail brush to loosen and remove any dirt under your nails. This will be much easier to do if your skin is soft and wet from the shower. For a deeper clean, invest in a pumice stone that will scrub away the hard and dead skin. If you regularly run, jog, or enjoy active sports then you may find that this also forms on the side of

your feet and around your toes. Remove this as much as possible and as often as possible.

scratches or snagging on your clothes. Nails that are not filed are also prone to breakage.

Now it’s time to trim the nails. It is important that you don’t cut too short. Always avoid cutting into the nail bed. If your preference is to have zero white of the nail, that’s ok, but anything shorter is too short. Also, you could cut/hurt yourself if you cut your nails too short, and that can lead to infections. Another tip for nails is keeping them smooth. As far as how to shape them, that’s up to you. But you should always file your nails after you cut them. You want to make sure you smooth out any sharp edges or corners to prevent

Don’t be afraid to go to a salon. It is not just for girls, and if you feel more comfortable with having someone else take care of your hands and feet, then definitely go to a salon; they are the experts! Also, lotion up, boys. Making sure your skin on your hands and feet is hydrated is very important for your skin’s health and for not looking ashy. Cracked skin can cause bleeding, among other things that will cause discomfort.

VEGAN MAKEUP

Everything you need to know about making the switch to vegan cosmetics Now more than ever, people are making compassionate choices about the products they use every day. You’re probably more likely to read the ingredients on a box of cereal than a tube of mascara, and you’re not alone. While veganism is becoming a popular diet choice among health and environmentally conscious people, many don’t know about the vegan options available for the areas of their lives that aren’t food related, like clothes, cosmetics, and makeup products. People overlook the fact that the ingredients in makeup products are often filled with animal-derived components that can be detrimental to your skin and health. When a product is advertised as crueltyfree, that does not necessarily make it vegan. Cruelty-free products are simply not tested on animals, while true vegan cosmetics do not contain any ingredients extracted from animals, including insects. According to People Ethical Treatment of Animals, beeswax and honeycomb are some of the most commonly used additives in products like eye shadow, mascara, lipstick, and other face makeup. Not to be a “buzz-kill,” 52

| STYLETOME.COM

but the bees need their own wax in order to provide for offspring and preserve honey for the winter. Without healthy bees to pollinate crops, our future looks devastating. That’s just one of the many reasons to start buying vegan cosmetics. When it comes to integrating values with beauty, vegan makeup is the perfect place to start. Among the good of supporting a worthy cause, it’s also better suited for sensitive skin. Although many vegan cosmetics can be far more expensive than non-vegan cosmetics, you may want to consider spending a pretty penny in order to reap the benefits. Ingredients like honey and lecithin, a byproduct found in the nervous tissue of living organisms, are often used in lipsticks and liquid powders and can cause allergic reactions in certain users. Vegan products are seen as superior because they have fewer ingredients, and the ingredients are more natural. These products are less likely to cause or aggravate acne, rashes, dry skin, or other skin conditions, and can even heal damaged skin with its wholesome qualities.

Wondering how to take the leap and find vegan makeup products to shop for? PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies program is the answer to your vegan prayers. It is designed to share information about companies that sell cruelty-free and vegan products. With more than 4,200 companies in their database, you’ll need to look no further. A few of the companies listed as cruelty-free and vegan include Adorn Cosmetics, whose slogan is “luxury without the guilt,” and Babydoll Cosmetics, who specialize in premium quality false eyelashes. If you’re looking for a more affordable way to support veganism, brands like ELF and Milani offer some vegan options for a fraction of the cost of other companies. Making the choice to purchase vegan makeup not only impacts your own health and wellness, but the future of the animals and the environment that we live in.

CELEBRITY SOUP

CELEBRITIES WE’RE THANKFUL FOR!

By Riesa Pascal

LET’S GIVE THANKS FOR THESE CLASS-ACT CELEBS November is upon us and Thanksgiving is right around the corner! This month is all about expressing our thanks for the many wonderful things in our lives—and who says that can’t include celebrities? Let’s take a look at some celebs who are too good for this world and their incredible acts of kindness.

Steve Buscemi Before Steve Buscemi became a household name thanks to a number of successful films, he actually worked as an FDNY firefighter in downtown Manhattan. Four years into his firefighter career, Buscemi left to pursue acting, but he returned to his firehouse immediately after September 11, 2001. Buscemi dropped everything he was doing and voluntarily worked 12 hour shifts for several days alongside his former team to search for survivors in the World Trade Center rubble.

Tom Hanks When an eight-year old boy named Corona heard the news that Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, had tested positive for the coronavirus, the boy decided to write Hanks a letter to check in on him. In addition to asking if Hanks and Wilson were okay, the boy also opened up to the actor telling him that he was being bullied at school with kids calling him the Coronavirus. The sweet note struck a chord with Hanks—a known typewriter enthusiast—who sent the boy a Corona brand typewriter along with a heartfelt response saying in part, “Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful!” and “You are the only person I’ve ever known to have the name Corona – like the ring around the sun, a crown.”

Bob Ross While doing a demonstration at a mall, a fan once approached Bob Ross and told him that he wasn’t able to paint due to colorblindness. The man only had the ability to see grey tones and believed he would never be able to create beautiful artwork or paintings. As a firm believer in his mantra that anyone can paint, Ross decided to dedicate an entire episode to the man by creating a gorgeous landscape painting out of whites and grays just to show him and other colorblind fans that they could do it too.

Mr. Rogers There are countless stories of Fred Rogers who is known for the kindness he displayed on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. The show aired from 1968 to 2001 and had many powerful messages that are just as relevant today. One scene in particular has especially stood the test of time. In the scene, Rogers is spraying his feet in a wading pool when Officer Clemmons stops by and Rogers asks him to join. Clemmons, played by black actor François Clemmons, initially responds that he doesn’t have a towel, and Rogers offers to share his. The episode aired in 1969 amid civil unrest over pool segregation policies in the U.S., and many saw it as Rogers taking a stand against racism. The same year it aired, the Supreme Court finally ruled that pools could not be segregated by race.

Denzel Washington Many don’t know that there would be no Black Panther without Denzel Washington! As a young theatre student at Howard University, Chadwick Boseman auditioned for and was accepted into a prestigious summer program at Oxford University. Unfortunately, Boseman and several other students couldn’t afford the program and thought they were going to have to pass up the amazing opportunity. When Boseman’s teacher found out, she made a call to a friend of hers who volunteered to pay the tuition for those students. That friend was Denzel Washington and Boseman finally got the opportunity to thank him at the premiere of Black Panther.

CELEBRITY SOUP

John Cena When it comes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, there is one celebrity who instantly comes to mind. WWE World Champion and actor John Cena is the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s most prolific volunteer and he continued to do so even through the pandemic. As of May 2020, Cena has granted over 650 wishes to children struggling with lifethreatening illnesses—by far the most wishes granted by any celebrity. In an interview with ESPN, Cena spoke of his philanthropy saying, “I just drop everything...If I can offer a fantastic experience, I’ll be first in line to do my part.”

Keanu Reeves In The Matrix Reloaded there is a 5 1/2-minute scene in which Keanu Reeves’ character Neo takes on 100 copies of his nemesis Agent Smith. The scene required seven brutal weeks of beatings that often came with real bruises and blood. Some of the 12 stunt men would get slammed to the ground 20 or more times in one day of filming. Reeves was so impressed by their work ethic and persistence that he bought Harley-Davidson motorcycles as a thank you gift for each of the 12. Reeves spoke of the kind act saying he just wanted to give a bigger thank-you “to all these guys who helped me make this, I think, one of the great movie fights in the history of cinema.”

Hugh Jackman Created by Hugh Jackman, the Laughing Man Foundation supports educational programs, community development and social entrepreneurs around the world. Jackman started the coffee foundation for farmers to be able to sell their commodities for a competitive price. The company was inspired by a struggling coffee farmer he met in Ethiopia. Jackman donates 100% of his profits and ensures farmers receive fair compensation for their products while also promoting farming practices that protect the earth and sustainable growth. Jackman says he didn’t set out to make a coffee company, he just “saw an opportunity to make a difference in the world with an exceptional coffee that gives back to the communities that grow it.”

Retainers are made in the office using a 3D printer, so if patients lose or break a retainer, the Abdoney team can easily print a replacement. “When I look at each particular patient, I’m going to offer them the best treatment option for them at that particular time” Dr. Abdoney says. “I always do my best to guide patients toward treatment options that are appropriate for their age, orthodontic goals and lifestyle. That includes traditional braces as well as Invisalign.” A Tampa native, Dr. Abdoney is an active member in several professional orthodontic associations, and he served a four-year term on the Florida Board of Dentistry. Dr. Abdoney also comes from a family of dentists; his father is a retired orthodontist, his brother Matt a pediatric dentist, and his brother Mark a eriodontist, all here in the Tampa Bay area. He does an in-depth consultation with patients first before offering them with a wide variety of cosmetic dental procedures. Dr. Macedo makes sure that the results fit the expectations of his patients, through the “Macedo Mock Up.” The approach involves a before and after photo shoot enabling patients to be involved in the entire process and by having the actual mock up in their mouth. Dr. Macedo is one of the 29 prosthodontists with a private practice in the United States bearing the same credentials. After earning his DDS, MS, PhD, and becoming a prosthodontist, Dr. Macedo wanted to share his knowledge more thoroughly. Dr. Nilash Patel has used his passion for technology to make Serenity Dental one of the most advanced offices in the Tampa Bay area. The implementation of iTero 3D Digital Imaging has allowed our patients to receive Invisalign care and restorative treatments quicker and more accurate than ever before. When receiving an initial complimentary Invisalign consultation, patients can see how their teeth look before and after treatment through a 3D virtual picture. “Patients have loved being able to be part of the process and actually get to twist and turn their 3D image and look at their own teeth from all angles allowing them to give input on what their aesthetic goals are. They also love the idea of knowing exactly what results can be achieved and knowing the exact timeline for their treatment,” added Dr. Nilash. Dr. Nilash has also completed advanced training and

been certified by the American Academy of Facial Esthetics. Noticing a strong demand for cosmetic treatments, Dr. Nilash performs Botox Cosmetic, Botox TMJ, and Xeomin, as well as facial and lip fillers with Juvederm and Belotero Balance. Dr. Nitash Patel has complemented his brother’s passions with his own. After completing a Fellowship in Prosthodontics at the University of Florida, Dr. Nitash has dedicated his efforts to helping patients with some of the most complicated dental issues. “I have found it extremely fulfilling to work with patients that sometimes feel hopeless and place their trust in me to bring that hope back.” Dr. Nitash has 18 years of experience in Dental Implant Surgery and Prosthetics. He has been passionate about sharing his knowledge by teaching other dentists who want to learn about implants. Dr. Nitash established the Implant Institute of Tampa, Center for Education & Excellence, with a goal of providing patients with the most advanced treatments available and to create an environment where dentists can come together to learn from each other. Dr. Nilash and Nitash have also been very active in community outreach through organizations like FreeDOM Clinic and Mission Smiles, where free dental care is provided to the underserved. Dental mission trips have included multiple visits to Haiti, Guatamala, Honduras, and Jamaica. “Dentistry has given so much to us that we feel very strongly about our obligation to find ways to give back.”

NITASH S. PATEL Implant Institute of Tampa Center for Education & Excellence “I am so thankful to my dental team for sharing my vision, making our Implant Institute one of my proudest achievements. Thank you to all the mentors that have guided me in both dentistry and personal growth.” After completing his Fellowship in Prosthodontics, Dr. Nitash Patel became very passionate about Implant Dentistry and all the advancements that relate. “Implants, although complex in itself, have actually made comprehensive care much easier and long lasting for the patient. I have struggled to find ways to make implants accessible, affordable, and comfortable for my dental community.” Dr. Nitash has achieved this at the Implant Institute of Tampa, which he established in 2013. “Patients can come to one office for everything implant related, from the implant itself to the crowns, bridges, and dentures that

are made to fit them.” With the use of 3D Imaging, Straumann Implant System, and the experience of having placed a 1000+ implants, he has simplified implant surgeries to be an average of 20 minutes or less. With this speed, efficiency, and accuracy, patients no longer have to fear surgery. Dr. Nitash offers complimentary implant consultations, where he takes the time to evaluate a patient’s issue and educate on all options available. “I have an extensive photo log of cases that I have completed over the years. I am usually able to consult a patient using pictures of completed cases that are nearly exact matches. This allows the patient to see pictures of each step and have a true understanding of the goals we are trying to achieve.” In addition to educating patients, Dr. Nitash is dedicated to educating other dentists on the Straumann Implant System.

DR. LINDSEY PIKOS ROSATI DR. ANTHONY M. PIKOS Coastal Jaw Surgery One of the easiest and most effective ways you can keep your smile looking and feeling great is through the advice and care of a compassionate and board certified Periodontist. Periodontists are specially trained doctors in the essential dental art and science of helping you maintain or regain beautiful, healthy gums and teeth. Chances are that if you were in jeopardy of losing a tooth, it could be linked to Periodontal (gum) disease and you would certainly not be alone as nearly 65 million Americans currently suffer from this leading cause of tooth loss, and most of them don’t even know they have it. There are several profound advantages you’ll experience through regular Periodontal care which will dramatically improve your quality of life. From simple things like avoiding chronic bad breath to more critical issues like preventing bone loss, increasing the longevity of your teeth and simply enjoying the function and confidence of complete dental health. Good Periodontal health can even help reduce your chance of heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s and diabetes. Research has shown that the more missing teeth you might have, the shorter your life expectancy becomes. Fortunately, you wouldn’t have to go too far to get to know two of the area’s most qualified and genuinely caring Periodontists, Dr. Lindsey Pikos Rosati and Dr. Anthony M. Pikos. They’ve brought their extraordinary skillsets home to one of the very few surgical based multidisciplinary practices in the state of Florida, Coastal Jaw Surgery. What makes this even more special is, Coastal Jaw Surgery is founded by their father, a world renown Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon and instructor, Dr. Michael A. Pikos.

Each of these exceptional perio-siblings can offer you the full spectrum of surgical treatment and cosmetic dentistry, including but definitely not limited to placing dental implants, periodontal plastic surgery, bone grafting, Same Day Teeth™ and of course the gamut of treatment modes for gum disease, gummy smile, malpositioned teeth, periodontal-orthodontic procedures and much more. If you appreciate the personalized warmth of a genuine, family practice, this is one dental office whose patients regularly share their experiences of feeling like a part of that family from the moment they’ve walked through the door. Dr. Lindsey Pikos Rosati was Chief Resident during her Residency at University of Florida College of Dentistry, Department of Periodontology. She received her DDS from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BS from University of Florida as well. Dr. Rosati is actively involved in several community and volunteer organizations, including pro-bono dental clinics and churchsponsored soup kitchens. In her spare time, she is an avid athlete and has completed an Ironman Triathlon and the Boston Marathon twice! She is happily married to her high school sweetheart, Sam, and together they have two beautiful children and a Labrador retriever named Gracie. Dr. Anthony M. Pikos was also Chief Resident during his Residency at University of Alabama, Department of Periodontology. He received his DMD from University of South Carolina School of Dentistry and his BS from Rhodes College and University of South Florida.

Dr. Pikos is actively involved in the local community participating in dental outreach, church events, and local softball leagues. Dr. Pikos is an avid outdoorsman enjoying both hunting and fishing as well as spending quality time on the water with his black Labrador retriever named Cooper. Dr. Pikos met his beautiful wife Rebecca during dental school and the two have been happily married for three years. While Dr. Rosati and Dr. Pikos each pursued their respective degrees in other states, they are both proud Florida natives and feel blessed and excited to be practicing as a family and treating patients back home in the Sunshine State.

By utilizing the latest state-of-the-art digital technology to provide complete, precise, patient focused care, treatment is comfortable, safe and effective. Dr. Piper and his team provide preventative, cosmetic and restorative care that ranges from simple cleanings to extensive restorative smile makeovers. Each patient’s treatment plan is individualized to suit their specific needs and situation. “The two biggest factors preventing someone from accomplishing their goals are usually fear and finances. We address these topics very early on at our initial meeting with a new patient. By listening very carefully to their wants, desires and concerns, we can provide an individualized, tailor-made plan that can overcome those obstacles,” shares Dr. Piper. Helping patients to look great and feel great has always been Dr. Piper’s primary goal. “My approach to practicing dentistry since 1992 has been to provide the highest quality, gentle dental care in a relaxed and caring environment. Educating patients about the best ways to obtain healthy, beautiful smiles and how to keep them that way is the most important service that we provide to our community. One way we do this is to provide detailed screenings for early diagnosis and prevention of diseases,” says Dr. Piper. “The earlier we catch a potential problem, the easier it is to offer multiple options to resolve that problem.” Philanthropy and giving back are two core values of the practice. Dr. Piper and his team feel that it is extremely important to volunteer in the community that has been so good to them. As a group, they have helped to build homes with Habitat for Humanity, educated the public at health fairs, and informed students about dental health in local schools during Dental Health Month. Dr. Piper also volunteers his personal time with Gulf Coast Dental Outreach, Donated Dental Services, and Flying Doctors of America mission trips to provide dental treatment for the less fortunate, locally as well as in impoverished countries. As a native of Pinellas County, Dr. Piper graduated from Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport.
