It seems we are over the hill with this devastating pandemic that has taken so many… We can begin to transform this broken world around us by nurturing a spirit of positivity and thankfulness within ourselves and the first step is simply realizing the everyday joys of life, eg., laughter, a smile, show of kindness to someone you don’t even know… Even with rising prices everywhere, it shall come down again. We just need to hold on, reach out and help our neighbors that are less fortunate and we can weather any storm that may come. In the midst of the struggles and uncertainty, there is hope in knowing that we are still here and that we are in this together. In the most critical of times, there is still love and happiness, and, we shall overcome. In a world where many are not as fortunate as us, the ability to donate to charities, provide for others, and even lend a helping hand is a true blessing. Yes, there is still so much life that is just waiting to be enjoyed. May we all get back to our senses, find gratefulness and see that we will always be better off when we decide to come together and to act as one community, one nation! Actors Who Were

TRAUMATIZED By Roles

What happens when filming a demanding role takes its toll? By Riesa Pascal 22

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

Have you ever felt traumatized by an intense movie scene or TV show clip? Have you ever fallen asleep after a horror movie and woken up in terror from nightmares? If watching this content as a viewer is enough to affect us, then one can only imagine how it must affect the actors who portray these demanding roles. It may be easy to forget sometimes, but it’s important for us to remember that celebrities are not puppets for our entertainment. They are living, breathing human beings and many have taken on incredibly difficult roles in the name of acting and suffered traumatic effects as a result.

Lady Gaga in House of Gucci For her role as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, Lady Gaga claims she stayed in character for nine whole months— sometimes not by choice. Her commitment to the portrayal led Gaga to draw inspiration from her own history of trauma which unfortunately led to the blurring of lines between her own experiences and the character’s. Things were so intense that even Director Ridley Scott was concerned that Gaga was "traumatizing herself." She replied defiantly saying, “I already have. I’ve already been through this anyway. I might as well give it to you." In what is likely the most telling sign of role trauma, Gaga said she had to have a psychiatric nurse on-set with her near the end of filming, saying that it was "safer" for her and that she "brought the darkness with me home because [Patrizia's] life was dark.” Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island Another one of the many ways acting can take a toll on an actor is when having to portray horrific, but historically accurate, real-life situations. Leonardo DiCaprio has been acting since he was 5-years-old, yet he called the filming of the psychological thriller Shutter Island "one of the most intense, hardcore filming experiences I’ve ever had as we explored what the mentally ill had to face in the days when mental hospitals were called insane asylums…I went to places and unearthed some things that I didn’t think I was capable of. It was like an emotional layer cake that just kept getting deeper and deeper.” Zac Efron in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile It may seem shocking to imagine High School Musical star Zac Efron as a serial killer, but that’s exactly who he portrayed in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Efron spoke of his role playing Ted Bundy saying he had difficulty separating himself from the role once filming was over each day. In an interview with Daily Mail, Efron expanded on his struggles saying "It was almost impossible. I’d like to say that I did it successfully, but I couldn't."

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker In order to play the emaciated Arthur Fleck in the hit film Joker, Joaquin Phoenix had to lose 52 pounds. Phoenix spoke of the experience saying the concentration on his weight caused him to develop disordered thinking. He spoke candidly saying, "Once you reach the target weight, everything changes. Like, so much of what's difficult is waking up every day and being obsessed over like 0.3 pounds. Right? And you really develop, like, a disorder." He continued saying that losing that much weight affected his psychology and he started “to go mad." Sophie Turner in Game of Thrones Though the Game of Thrones novels were for young adults, the HBO adaptation was decidedly R-rated as it featured tons of nudity, sexual content, and graphic violence. Actress Sophie Turner was just 15 years old when she was cast as Sansa Stark in the hit show. Turner has spoken about the filming of intense scenes—including her character being assaulted—in interviews saying she developed coping mechanisms of having fun between takes so she wouldn't be traumatized. She went on to say, “I’m sure I’ll exhibit some symptoms of trauma down the road. At that age, I don’t think I could comprehend a lot of the scene matter.” Tom Hanks in Cast Away Sometimes it’s not so much about the trauma of a scene, but rather the isolation. Such was the case for Tom Hanks when he played a man stuck on a deserted island in Cast Away. In one of the most iconic movie moments in history, Hanks’ character gets so desperate for companionship that he names a volleyball "Wilson" and speaks to him. Hanks recently opened up about going crazy by the end of filming saying, "When Wilson was born, I had dialogue with him, and I heard his dialogue in my head. I did go crazy 'cause I never had a day off. I never had a shot off; I was never off camera for anything. It was...the whole movie was like, point and shoot. I don't even recall hearing 'Action' and 'Cut.'" Michael B. Jordan in Black Panther For Tom Hanks, his intense solitude during filming was not by choice. In contrast, Michael B. Jordan intentionally isolated himself to play the villain Killmonger in Black Panther. His reasoning was for role preparation, but the plan significantly backfired on him when filming wrapped. Jordan spoke of finding it hard to go back to his normal life and readjust to "people caring about me, getting that love that I shut out." He went on to say, "I shut out love, I didn't want love. I wanted to be in this lonely place as long as I could." Fortunately this story has a happy ending and Jordan decided to go to therapy which he said helped immensely as "Everyone needs to unpack and talk.”

HEALTH

Alas, it’s June and summer has officially arrived. This calls for long days under the sun, and cozy nights under the stars - and while we are out and about enjoying the hot summer days, wellness should remain top of mind. After all, long days call for more energy-packed goodness! We have you covered with five healthy in-season foods you may want to add to your summer ritual.

1. STRAWBERRIES: Have you ever attended a strawberry festival? If you have, you’ve probably witnessed all the ways this sweet fruit can be incorporated in strawberry milkshakes, tarts, shortcakes and beyond. However, aside from the fact that strawberries make for some of our most nostalgic desserts, they are jam-packed with antioxidants that protect the heart and help reduce the risk of serious health conditions such as cancer, diabetes and stroke. 2. BLUEBERRIES: Another antioxidant-packed fruit is no other than the blueberry. This fruit contains a plant compound called anthocyanin which not only gives it the color blue, but also gives life to many of its benefits. Over time, blueberries have been booming in skincare products, as they are known to be great for skin health. In addition, they also help the heart and support bone health. Tip: Sprinkle on top of your favorite breakfast - they make for a great parfait! 3. TOMATOES: I’m sure you’ve heard that Oranges are a great source of vitamin C, but so are tomatoes! Not only are they rich in vitamin C, they contain potassium, folate, and vitamin K. And like most berries, they too, help prevent heart disease and cancer. Best part, you can use them in so many recipes. Whether it’s in your soup, on your sandwich, or as the sauce to your pasta, there’s really not much you can’t use them for. 4. BEETS: Not a fan of beets? Maybe it’s time to reconsider. Beets, also known as beetroot, are packed with goodness like vitamin B9, which is responsible for helping cells grow and function. They also help fight against inflammation. If you are planning to be active this summer, adding beetroot to your smoothie or juice is a great idea as beets increase blood flow to your muscles and are known to improve performance during exercise. 5. BELL PEPPERS: Just like the tomatoes on our list, bell peppers also contain an essential vitamin for the summer, as it helps protect against sun damage, if you guessed vitamin C, you’re absolutely right. According to Healthline, a single bell pepper can provide up to 169% of the recommended daily intake (RDI). Which means, you could replace your vitamin C supplement for a bell pepper if you wanted to. Otherwise, they make for a wonderful topping or ingredient. Aside from the vitamin C, bell peppers also contain vitamin K1 (for the bones), Vitamin A (great for anti-aging), vitamin E (for healthy nerves), and that’s just to name a few!

You have your rosé, flowers, sandwiches, fresh-cut strawberries, and your gingham blanket... now what? Planning your outfit for your picnic is equally as important as planning what to eat, and maybe even more fun. Here are a few pieces that’ll make your fairytale-like picnic a summer memory that you’ll cherish. The last thing you want to wear on your picnic is denim that’ll only end up sticking to you. One of the most effortless trends that’ll have you looking put together on your picnic is the wrap skirt. Wrap skirts can be mini or maxi, whichever you prefer; they are easy and breezy, and the easiest article of clothing to style. The good thing about styling your wrap skirt is that you already own the other piece you need to complete your look. If your skirt has pattern, try a basic white tank. Or even match a floral crop top with a solid color wrap. Sounds maybe too easy, right?

By Megan Miller

Another option is wearing a tie front crop top. Tie front tops are on the rise and seem to be everywhere, and we can easily see why. The frontknot is adjustable so you can breathe on these hot, sunny days. Pair your crop top with a mini skirt or even some cotton high waisted shorts. These light, airy tops will have you laying back on your blanket relaxing and enjoying the sun. Now that you have the hardest part of getting a look together done, accessorizing should be a breeze. Woven bags are in, so don’t be afraid to carry around your picnic basket around like a purse. You can even add a colorful bow on the handle to add a cute accent. The perfect shoe to match your picnic theme is the espadrille. These roped soles come in different heights and in neutral tones. The cool tones and woven bottoms will match any outfit, and will even complement your picnic basket.

The skin on your scalp is just like the skin on any other part of your body, so just like any solid skin care routine, that means exfoliating regularly. Keeping the scalp incredibly clean is going to help the hair you have now, it’s going to help the hair grow thicker and fuller, and most importantly it’s going to help that future hair grow thicker and fuller. A clean scalp is one of the most important things you can do to ensure you have healthy growing hair.

PROTECT YOUR FACE FROM FLORIDA’S

SUN You thought you knew, but you really don’t!

Putting on sunscreens seems to be a no brainer. We live in Florida and July and August are the hottest months of the year and a lot us surprisingly don’t use sunscreen. Or,if we are, we aren’t using as much as we should.

It may seem “extra” but it has to be done if you want to protect the sensitive skin on our face. First, you want to put the skin-nourishing creams/ingredients. After is when you go in with the SPF, and lastly, your makeup.

If we want to preserve the health and youth of our skin we need to be applying sunscreen daily (not just on the beach). But specifically, on our face. That’s the money maker after all right?

Final thing to remember, when it comes to sunscreen, the SPF factors are not additive. If you’re wearing an SPF of 30 on top of makeup with SPF 30, you’re not wearing SPF 60. So look at whichever product has the highest SPF, and go by that number for an accurate idea of how much protection you’re wearing.

For the ladies (and gents) “but what if I were make up, is that enough” It can be! If you use enough. According to Cybele Fishman, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist. “Liquid makeup can be as effective as regular SPF, if you put enough on,” she says. “Powder would need to be caked on thickly for it to provide as good of coverage, but most women wouldn’t want to put it on that heavily.” There are make up brands that have sunscreen mixed in the foundation. However foundation on its own, especially living in Florida isn’t enough to stay protected.

36

| STYLETOME.COM

For liquid, serums, and sprays, if you’re using a chemical sunscreen (one that has a filter like avobenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate), the order should be SPF, moisturizer, makeup. If you’re using a physical sunscreen (one that has a filter like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) your order should be moisturizers, SPF, makeup. The amount of sunscreen should be about a quarter size dollop. Moral of the story, Don’t leave your house without applying your sunscreen!

HEALTH & BEAUTY

It is Summer in Orlando and the heat IS on (in more ways than one), and though we may be mid-way through the summer, we are at the peak of summer-time sunshine. Which means, it’s time to glow! But of course, in the best way possible with the right kind of protection under the sun! Which brings us to protecting the skin. Ultraviolet (UV) protection is key when protecting your skin from various forms of UV radiation linked to aging, hyperpigmentation and skin cancer. Dermatologists urge individuals, regardless of the amount exposed to UV rays, to shield their skin. It is recommended when shopping for sunscreen, to look for one that contains at least an SPF of 30. With so many options of sunscreen in the market, it can be overwhelming to decide, especially since the formulas vary. The two primary types being mineral vs. chemical SPF. The good news for you? We narrowed down some of our top picks so that you need not look further! Here’s our top summer choices of sunscreen, keeping in mind everything from ingredients to an overall feel!

BEST FOR THE FACE: ELTAMD UV CLEAR BROAD-SPECTRUM SPF 46 | CATEGORY: MINERAL This gentle yet strong oil-free vegan sunscreen is power-packed with niacinamide (vitamin B3), hyaluronic acid and lactic acid - all ingredients that are amazing for healthy-looking skin. In addition, it is super light and can be worn easily under makeup without feeling cakey or clogged. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, or suffer from hyperpigmentation and rosacea, this sunscreen is especially great for you! But overall, the key ingredients are beneficial for all skin types. ABOUT FACE GETTING THAT RUNWAY GLOW By Autumn Barker

With fall comes the end of hurricane season and the start of pumpkin spice lattes, football, and hopefully, sweater weather! After a long summer spent in the sun by the pool and/or beach, it’s time to give your skin a little attention. Time to put away that tanning oil and bring out the moisturizers!

40

| STYLETOME.COM

HEALTH & BEAUTY

The fall runways feature fresh, dewy complexions with minimal makeup, but after months in the Florida sun it may seem a bit daunting to step out with a naked face. These tried and true skin care tips are sure to give you a clean, glowing complexion even Cate Blanchett would be proud of. As you begin switching up your closet and pulling out your fall wardrobe, you should also be switching up your skincare routine. While summertime requires astringent based facial cleansers to keep pores clear of the oil and sweat that the Florida heat and humidity is sure to bring out, your fall cleanser should be more moisturizing. Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Foaming Cleanser, Origins A Perfect World Antioxidant Cleanser with White Tea, and Fresh Soy Face Cleanser are great face washes that will thoroughly cleanse you without stripping your skin of essential moisture.

Many people leave exfoliating out of their skincare routine, but it is a key factor to achieving that enviable runway glow. Chances are that the summer spent outdoors and in the sun has left your skin feeling rough and looking dull due to the buildup of dead skin cells and clogged pores. Exfoliating several times a week will remove any dead skin and keep skin feeling soft and looking radiant. Be sure to be gentle when exfoliating – while exfoliating has many amazing benefits, it can also damage

After spending your time pampering your face, take a moment to show your lips a little TLC. While most of us are religious about our skincare regimens, we often neglect our lips. It’s important to use a lip scrub every couple of days to remove dead cells that cause chapping and keep lips soft and smooth. Tarte Maracuja Lip Exfoliant and Lush Mint Julips are both made from natural ingredients and are sure to give you soft, kissable lips. Be sure to apply a rich lip balm, like Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment or Korres Lip Butter after exfoliating to lock in moisture and promote surface rejuvenation.

WITH TIME AND DEDICATION ON YOUR PART YOU TOO CAN HAVE RADIANT SKIN THAT WILL GIVE YOU THE GLOW OF A RUNWAY MODEL.

After a summer spent slathering on sunscreen, your pores are probably in need of some extra deep cleaning. Using a clay mask a few times a week will clear out clogged pores leaving skin feeling smoother and looking brighter. Try First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Purifying Mask with Red Clay or Tarte Amazonian Clay Double Detox Exfoliating Facial Mask for deep cleansing that will leave your skin feeling refreshed. If you prefer single-use masks, check out Sephora Collection’s line which offers eight different fiber masks made to target specific issues. The Sephora Collection Rose Mask is a great choice for fall because it is enriched with rose extract and provides intense moisture for dry and dull skin.

your skin cells if you scrub too harshly. Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Face Polish and Murad Pore Reform Skin Smoothing Polish are two products that will gently exfoliate without drying or irritating your skin. After exfoliating, apply a rich moisturizer to keep skin elastic and well hydrated. In the fall your skin needs more emollient creams to help it retain moisture and keep wrinkles at bay. Créme de la Mer original moisturizing cream and La Prairie Cellular Time Release Moisturizer are two rich moisturizers that will provide you with maximum moisture-retention to promote soft and luminous skin, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. If you tend towards very dry skin try using Argan oil, which is packed full of vitamin E and essentially fatty acids that nourish and hydrate skin. Josie Maran offers several products made from 100 percent pure Argan oil that are ideal for both your face and body.

Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen. Even if it’s cloudy out the sun’s rays can still burn your skin. Protecting your skin will help prevent skin cancer, dark spots, wrinkles, and is the most important step in your skincare routine. Fortunately, there are some great products, like Fresh Peony Brightening UV Shield SPF 50+ and Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisture SPF 47, that will provide you with sun protection without a greasy finish. Unfortunately, there’s no quick and easy way to immediately have luminous skin. But with a bit of time and dedication on your part you too can have radiant skin that will give you the glow of a runway model.

CELEBRITY SOUP

CELEBRITIES WHO CHOOSE TO LIVE A

FRUGAL LIFE Not every famous person feels the need to flaunt their extraordinary wealth. By Riesa Pascal

CELEBRITY SOUP

While boasting a lavish lifestyle has become almost synonymous with being a celebrity in Hollywood, there are some stars who prefer to go against the grain and instead choose to live a more modest and humble life. From extreme money management to shameless coupon cutting, here are several frugal celebs who you aren’t queuing up to flaunt their excess on “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.”

SARAH JESSICA PARKER She may love high-end fashion and shop like a millionaire on the big screen, but Sarah Jessica Parker incredibly still dresses her children in hand-me-downs. Despite her net worth of $150 million, Parker has been vocal over the years about wanting to ensure that her three children don’t grow up spoiled or feeling entitled to her wealth. As a result, she’s been more than happy to recycle hand-me-downs from their older cousins and put them to good use in her little ones' wardrobes. JAY LENO After Jay Leno became the host of NBC's The Tonight Show in 1992, he decided that he would never touch his salary of $15 million annually. Throughout his career, Jay instead chose to live off his stand-up income of $10 million per year and put his other earnings into savings. It’s also worth noting that his peak The Tonight Show salary was $30 million per year, but Leno agreed to a 50% pay cut to help his staff get raises and keep their jobs—talk about a standup guy! SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR When it comes to saving dollars, coupons can be an absolute lifesaver and apparently Sarah Michelle Gellar would agree! Her net worth is around $20 million, but being a millionaire hasn’t made her too proud to clip coupons which add up to big savings over time. In order to avoid paying more bucks for her everyday purchases, Gellar will often use coupons at the grocery store or even the department store during her shopping trips. PAUL MCCARTNEY Just because you are loaded doesn’t mean you have an obligation to share that wealth with others! Even though he is one of the most famous rock stars of all time, Paul McCartney is well-known for his humble and frugal ways. Case in point? Despite his net worth of $1.2 billion, The Beatles frontman has no shame in asking guests to pay for their own drinks at a party. The frugality doesn’t end at just his friends either. His own daughter Stella had to buy clothes from second-hand shops as a child and even paid her own way through school. KRISTEN BELL Who’s to say you have to change your fashion tastes just because your income increases? After a successful Broadway career and an acclaimed role in Disney’s highest earning animated movie of all time, Kristen Bell has amassed a net worth of $40 million. Needless to say, the Frozen star could afford to wear any designer she wants on the red carpet, but she is surprisingly well-known for being a much more budget conscious shopper than her celebrity peers. For one event, Bell even donned a $45 dress from Target and she certainly didn’t have to sacrifice style for budget in order to do so! VINCENT KARTHEISER With a net worth of $6 million, you may be surprised to learn that Mad Men star Vincent Kartheiser lives an extremely modest lifestyle. Rather than invest his wealth into swanky sports cars, Kartheiser is a devoted bus and train user who prefers to take public transit everywhere. If that wasn’t impressive enough, get a load of this— Kartheiser also lives in a one-bedroom apartment in Hollywood and frequently donates gently used goods to charities as a way to recycle and give back. TYRA BANKS Even though she has a net worth of $90 million, Tyra Banks is the queen of penny pinching and has never been shy about doing so! From keeping the free shampoo and soaps left in her fancy hotel rooms to making DIY oil blotters from disposable toilet seat protectors, Banks is notorious for her frugality and speaks openly about her clever tips for how to stretch a dollar.

timeless expressions of good taste, beauty and luxurious perfection.

Rolls-Royce products enjoy an expansive lifetime, ultimately becoming timeless expressions of good taste, beauty and luxurious perfection. Phantom occupies a unique, pinnacle position in this regard, being revered for its timeless elegance. The eighth-generation of Phantom was presented in 2017. In creating the new expression, RollsRoyce designers and engineers have been guided by the requests of clients, who have implored Rolls-Royce not to make any major changes to an already iconic motor car. In answer to these client demands, only the lightest of design touches, embellishments, and adaptations have been incorporated. Indeed, it is not about what should be changed, but in fact, what should be preserved and protected. The most obvious and important feature to be retained is Phantom’s commanding presence. This has been further enhanced by a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights above the Pantheon Grille. This gives Phantom a new and assertive modernity, reflecting its driver-focused character. A subtle geometric change to the Pantheon Grille makes the ‘RR’ Badge of Honour and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot more prominent when viewed from the front. The grille itself is now illuminated, a feature debuted and popularised in Ghost. The headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside, and adding further surprise and delight to Phantom’s night-time presence. Phantom’s side profile retains Rolls-Royce’s signature short front and long rear overhang, long wheelbase and broad c-pillar, the latter giving greater privacy for occupants. The silhouette preserves the elegant key lines running from the Spirit of Ecstasy to the tapering rear tail. The ‘split-belt’ line begins at the front fender and curves gently towards the rear door, emphasising the car’s long dashto-axle proportions, before falling gently towards the lantern-like rear lamps. The heavily undercut ‘waft line’ creates a strong shadow, visually signalling the marque’s unequalled ‘Magic Carpet Ride’. The side profile is further enhanced with a suite of new wheels. A 3D, milled, stainless steel wheel with triangular facets is available to commission in a fully or part-polished finish. Alternatively, Phantom may be graced with a truly elegant disc wheel, recalling the romance of 1920’s Rolls-Royce

motor cars. This disc wheel is produced in both polished stainless steel and black lacquer, perfectly encapsulating the sense of flight on land. Responding to Phantom clients who have previously requested a darkened chrome grille surround, black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers, these may now be commissioned. This aesthetic now enables Rolls-Royce to transform Phantom into the lightest of light or the darkest of dark appearances. Phantom’s sumptuous interior remains almost unaltered: the steering wheel has been made slightly thicker, providing a more connected and immediate point of contact for the owner-driver. Phantom and Phantom Extended have distinct characters of their own, representing two different seats of power. Phantom is now predominantly favoured by the ever-increasing number of clients wishing to be in the driving seat themselves. For those preferring to command the road from the rear seat, Phantom Extended offers the definitive super-luxurious chauffeur-driven experience. Now, Phantom includes the debut of ‘Rolls-Royce Connected’. This enables the owner to send an address directly to the motor car from Whispers, the RollsRoyce private-members’ Application, providing seamless navigation to an event, restaurant, dealership or even the Home of Rolls-Royce itself. ‘Rolls-Royce Connected’ also displays the motor car’s location, security status and current ‘health’ condition on Whispers; at the touch of a button, the owner can contact a preferred dealership for any servicing requirements or information about the car. As the marque’s pinnacle product, Phantom attracts an elite stratum of

Rolls-Royce clients. Established and successful, at the top of their field and often in the public eye, these are determined and demanding people. It is no coincidence that Phantom attracts the most ambitious and challenging Bespoke commissions ever undertaken by Rolls-Royce. The resulting creations − each an artistic masterpiece in its own right − illustrate a broader truth: since its inception, Phantom has always been whatever the client wants it to be; not only the ‘best car in the world’, but the best car for them and their world. Self-evidently, there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Phantom client. Spanning the ‘poles of luxury’, they may be everyounger or older, modern or traditional, self-made or from long-established wealth. Their commissions reflect a full spectrum of interests and influences. At one extreme, Phantom takes on a subversive, almost rebellious character – youthful, dynamic and daring. At the other, Phantom transforms into an ode to luxury grandeur and timelessness. The challenge of the RollsRoyce Bespoke Collective is to accommodate this vast expanse of client characteristics and desires in one pinnacle product. The eighthgeneration Phantom has thus been deliberately designed to offer a ‘blank canvas’ for Bespoke personalisation, capable of becoming whatever the client wishes it to be, and a true reflection of their individual style and character. Phantom’s great strength and appeal is that it allows clients to position themselves anywhere between these ‘poles of luxury’, defining luxury on their own terms. And wherever that point happens to lie, they have the assurance that Phantom itself is − technically, materially, aesthetically and dynamically − still the ‘best car in the world’.

HEALTH

A HEALTHY WAY OF EATING Supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), DASH ranks high on nutritious plans lists. Its acronym stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. Although the diet’s primary aim is to lower blood pressure and to improve blood lipid levels, DASH can have a positive effect on your waistline too. Unlike other diets that promise miracles and place restrictions on important food groups, DASH focuses on limiting daily sodium intake and adding more whole grains, fresh fruit and veggies to your plate. Six or fewer servings per day of lean meats are also allowed. In other words, you cut out the junk: Avoid processed foods (which are loaded with sodium) and limit refined sugars and saturated fats. Coronary heart disease and stroke are two of the leading causes of mortality in the United States. A typical American diet consists of 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day, and according to Harvard’s School of Public Health, 75 percent of the sodium comes from processed foods. Why is high salt intake so dangerous? Diets high in sodium increase blood pressure, which strains your heart. Eventually this can damage your blood vessels and organs. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, individuals who consume large amounts of sodium, and low amounts of potassium, have a higher risk of dying from a heart attack. But the good news is that by changing your dietary habits you can minimize your risk! DASH is a healthy way of eating because the plan is rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, fiber, and protein. Moreover, DASH research showed that a diet plan containing 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day lowered blood pressure. And a plan containing only 1,500 mg had an even greater effect. So, who should try DASH? Individuals who have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease, African Americans, and adults aged 51 and older. According to the Mayo Clinic, the diet “is also in line with dietary recommendations to prevent osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.”

individuals. This is why it is highly recommended that you gradually increase your intake of fiber-rich foods. You should also chat with your physician about what sodium level is right for you. And, if your main goal is to lose weight quickly, aim for 1,600 calories per day. Of course, a healthy weight-loss plan should include exercise too. In a 2010 study, overweight participants with high blood pressure who exercised and followed the DASH diet plan, lost on average 19 pounds in 4 months. As always, consult with your physician about the right type of exercise for you and your goals. For more information on the DASH Diet Weight Loss Solution, visit dashdiet.org

DASH IS A HEALTHY WAY OF EATING BECAUSE THE PLAN IS RICH IN POTASSIUM, CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, FIBER, AND PROTEIN.

What about shedding those extra pounds? Well, it’s no secret that eating more veggies (while avoiding saturated fats and refined sugars) can help you maintain a healthy weight. Nutrition expert Marla Heller, MS, RD, used the DASH research to develop a weight-loss plan that promises better health. During phase one, you cut out whole grains and fruit. During this 2-week, “low-carb transition phase,” you will immediately notice effects on the waistline. In the second phase you reintroduce fruit, starchy veggies, and whole grains into your diet. Take note that the DASH plan has more daily servings of fiber that can cause gastrointestinal discomfort in some

The Paloma is a refreshing, easy-to-make drink that combines tequila, lime juice and grapefruit soda/juice. Its origin story is uncertain, but most reports say its creation is in the 1950s. Blanco tequila is the traditional choice, but lightly aged reposado also makes a fine drink. In this case, it’s best to keep the añejo capped, as the well-aged expression’s oaky profile disrupts that clean, refreshing taste you want in a Paloma. In Mexico, Jarritos soda is a popular choice for adding the effervescent grapefruit note. This brand is relatively easy to find stateside, particularly in grocery stores that stock Mexican foods and ingredients. However, as bartenders continue to embrace fresh juice in their cocktails, it has become increasingly common to use

fresh grapefruit juice in place of the grapefruit soda. If you want to go that route, you can complement the juice with unflavored sparkling water to achieve the necessary bubbly effect. This combination yields a similar cocktail, so it’s worth the experiment. But grapefruit soda is the more traditional choice when making Palomas. Some people may also choose to rim the glass with salt, while others add a pinch of salt straight into the glass. This step isn’t necessary, but it does add a savory quality that melds beautifully with the earthy tequila and tart grapefruit. And it opens the possibility of using a spiced salt, like Tajín, for an extra seasoning kick. Because the Paloma is constructed right in the glass, you don’t need any bar tools to make it. Just add your ingredients to a highball glass with ice, and you’re ready to enjoy a refreshing cocktail.

BARFLY

101 GLASSWARE

We all walk into the bar and usually order our regular cocktail without thinking twice. No matter what your elixir of choice is you know what you drink and what it tastes like. What if I told you the glass that holds your spirit preference makes a difference to your experience? Would that make you pay attention to what vessel you sip from the next time you are at your favorite watering hole? I promise you will appreciate your bartender who knows what glass to use even more the next time you belly up to the bar. Most of us have a go to cocktail when we go out to a bar or restaurant. No matter where you are in the world your cocktail should conform to the glass in your hand. Vodka and soda is your choice; a rocks glass is placed in front of you without a second thought from you. A mojito is served in a tall glass with a straw and the ever-present mint and lime mingling together among the ice. A snifter gets pulled out after a dinner party for cognac and the like. But have you ever wondered why? There is a method to the madness that we would usually overlook. Most bars will serve a cocktail or liquor in a few glasses that should be found in all bars universally. You have the all-purpose rocks glass aka Old Fashioned or double Old Fashioned glass. There is also the Collins glass, snifter, martini and the list goes on.

64

| STYLETOME.COM

I want to focus on the glassware you find most often in the bar, the rocks glass. Whether you realize it or not this glass helps accentuate the flavors that make you cherish the drink that sits in front of you. A single liquor drink on the rocks, with muddled fruit, bitters or a mixer is the classic drink that ends up in this style of glass. A usually short and wide brim allows you to take in the aromas and flavors that are mixed within. This style of glass affects both your taste and your sense of smell in a positive way. It is my favorite glass because it serves as the bartenders’ multi-tool behind the bar. If you want your whiskey neat this is the glass I would use to highlight the flavor and style of the spirit. The size and shape allows the spirit to open up and reveal the magic and hard work that went into creating something meant to please. The Old Fashioned cocktail is proof that this type of glass is the perfect choice so much that it is usually called an Old Fashioned glass. The classic Old Fashioned features not only your favorite whiskey but the addition of bitters, sugar and finished with a cherry and orange slice. Take a sip of one of these and you understand why it earned the right to have its moniker attached to a style of glassware. The whiskey and bitters open up and meld nicely on that first taste while the cherry and orange tickle your nose like a fruit filled feather floating up from

By Travis Joiner

the glass. If this was in a Collins glass, tall and thin, it would lose something without question. It might seem like a little thing but these little nuances add up to build a great cocktail experience. Cocktails that contain a single liquor and mixer on the rocks are most often found in this type of glass as well. The same reasoning applies as the wide style of the glass allows the liquid within to become a harmonious blend that pleases our senses and usually ends up in the classic saying, “Bartender, hit me again.” One of the trends that is a perfect fit for the rocks glass is a large sphere of ice usually surrounded by bourbon or scotch. This glass allows the igloo size chunk of ice to slowly melt and let the chosen liquor in the rocks glass be the star. I would be willing to bet that most of us do not even give it a second thought when it comes to which type of glass ends up in front of us or why. No matter how you prefer your cocktail be sure to know there was some thought in choosing the right glassware to fit the drink. There really is a reason behind the many shapes and sizes of the glassware that is awaiting the next cocktail behind the bar. Of those choices the rocks glass reigns supreme because of its versatility and ability to deliver and delight your senses in more ways than one.

BARFLY

BARFLY Recipe 1 seedless watermelon 1/2 cucumber 2 limes, juiced 1/2 cup mint, muddled 8 oz vodka, chilled 1 bottle sparkling water, chilled ice cubes

CHEERS TO SUMMER!

Watermelon & Cucumber Mojitos Stay cool this summer with a subtle spin on your average mojito. Replacing the typically heady rum with a soft splash of vodka assists in a harmonious, fruity flavor. Delicately fresh with watermelon and cucumber, this icy drink is glacial perfection. Pulp is not required, but if partial to texture, then it can be added in any amount. Sparkling water and lime lend a mild kick to the muted fruits.

Fans of fresh herbs will be especially keen on the addition of mint, whether it is from a personal garden or the store. If a sweeter flavor is preferred, simple syrup or sugar can be added, as well as an ample dose of watermelon. For anyone with an aesthetic flair, a wedge of watermelon and cucumber slices make this drink ideal for hosting guests. Simple to make and enjoy, test out these tantalizing flavors during summer get-togethers or when relaxing poolside.

- In a blender, blend watermelon and cucumber together. Strain using a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp and set juice aside (in fridge to chill). - Juice limes, then muddle with mint using a wooden spoon or a muddler. - Put the mixture in a shaker with ice and shake for 15-20 seconds. Strain into a large pitcher. - Then add vodka and a bottle of sparkling water. - Pour into glasses filled with ice and enjoy!

Bentley goes BIG on ULTRA-LUXURY with Bentayga Extended Wheelbase Part spa, part boardroom on wheels, the Bentley Bentayga EWB stretches some truly luxurious automotive muscle There’s a gulf between the image of the conventional stretched limousine and the futuristic image of the expanded ‘living room on wheels’-style electric car that is promised to be just around the corner. Yet both archetypes do pretty much the same thing: prioritise passenger space. Bentley’s latest model, the Bentayga EWB (Extended Wheelbase) is the latest in a long tradition of extended cars from the company, typically manufactured for dignitaries and industry titans who feel that conventional scale is somewhat lacking. Adding 180mm to the standard model, the Bentayga EWB is a sort of replacement for the Mulsanne, the company’s former flagship that ended production in 2020. It’s a very different beast, being an SUV first and foremost, whereas the Bentley Mulsanne was a traditional grand saloon of the type that is fast fading from our roads. And while the Mulsanne was made in relatively low numbers – just 7,300 hand-built examples over a ten-year lifespan – the Bentayga is currently Bentley’s big seller, with around 20,000 sold within four years of the car’s debut in 2016. What’s more, Bentley expects this new variant to account for 45 per cent of all new Bentayga orders, emphasising just how much certain customers expect to be driven around, rather than drive themselves. For that is the main point of the EWB. As you’d expect, all that extra space goes into the rear compartment, which is now filled with two grand ‘Airline Seat Specification’ thrones, with all the reclining and massaging and cosseting you can get. In addition, the seats include something Bentley is calling its ‘advanced postural adjustment system’, which ‘subtly and continuously changes the shape of the seat around the body, preventing dead spots and fatigue build up’. In other words, the seat wriggles for you so you don’t ever get uncomfortable.

The full spectrum of rear entertainment is also included, with twin rear screens, fold-down picnic tables and the detachable ‘Touch Screen Remote’ in the centre console. Optional configurations include four-and five-seat ‘Comfort’ specs, which do away with the ability to recline the seats by 40 degrees, but allow you to fold the rear row to maximise the boot space – there’s no seven-seat option for the EWB, as there is with the standard Bentayga. Dip into Bentley’s Mulliner option book for limitless other ways of enhancing the space. Other innovations include self-closing doors (the first time on a Bentley – they’re more usually found on Rolls-Royces) and the introduction of Bentley’s ‘diamond illumination’, a form of leather finish that incorporates background lighting through the trim patterns. The soft, pillowy feel of the leather seats is even more refined thanks to advances in production, and the company claims there are 24 billion different trim combinations, hopefully reducing the chance of seeing an identical model to your own. Traditionally, China has been the number one buyer of longer cars as the cultural cachet of being driven has endured amongst luxury car buyers. Typically, most premium manufacturers still build special lengthened versions for the Chinese market. To date, however, that extra stretch has been reserved almost exclusively for saloon cars, while the Bentayga EWB is very much a traditional SUV, even if that rear compartment is now part spa, part boardroom. Yet with design possibilities being opened up by the next wave of high-end EVs, there’s an even more radical future for interior luxury on the horizon.

TAMPA’S

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Tampa’s Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.

Sid Panchamia, MD Omni Spine & Joint For over a decade, Dr. Sid Panchamia has served the Tampa Bay area as a double Board certified interventional pain management specialist and anesthesiologist. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education in New York then graduated from New York Medical College. His postgraduate training consisted of surgical and anesthesiology residencies at prominent institutions such as North Shore-LIJ Health System and University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Health System. During this advanced training he found that he enjoyed patient interactions combined with the procedural aspect of surgery. He was accepted into one of the most distinguished fellowships for regional anesthesia and chronic pain – Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. There he was able to refine his surgicalanesthesia skills blended with interventional pain management. Growing up in the New York area combined with his extensive training made him realize early on that there is diversity even with pain. Each person has a unique story surrounding the cause of their pain and everyone learns to cope with it differently. In 2016, Dr. Sid Panchamia founded Omni Pain Care with a vision to help patients eliminate or significantly reduce pain through individualized treatments that target the source of pain. The office aesthetic was designed with a spa like appearance to provide a calm and inviting atmosphere to ease patient anxieties. Dr. Panchamia’s goal is to develop customized comprehensive treatment plans to improve patient quality of life through effective non-surgical or minimally invasive procedures. He provides treatments for pain related to the spine in addition to the shoulder, hip, knee, and sacroiliac joints, etc. The office has state of the art equipment allowing most procedures to be done in the office without significant downtime.

In January 2022, Dr. Panchamia expanded to a second location in Clearwater and rebranded Omni Pain Care as Omni Spine & Joint to better reflect our specialized approach. He takes great pride in his team and believes that each member plays an integral role in the success of the practice. Dr. Panchamia loves residing in the Tampa Bay area with his wife and two children. He enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Deepa Verma MD, AIHM Integrative/Anti-aging Physician at Synergistiq Wellness Dr. Verma is double board-certified in family medicine and integrative medicine. She graduated magna cum laude from The College of NJ and received her MD from Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey (formerly Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Verma completed her family medicine residency at Somerset Medical Center and was elected chief resident. She founded Synergistiq Integrative Health (now known as Synergistiq Wellness), her private practice, in 2013, during a very challenging time in her life and so Synergistiq represents a rebirth and renewal of her soul. After years of feeling unfulfilled treating patients traditionally, Dr. Verma decided to change course, following her passion to educate and heal each individual as a whole, not as a fragmented and dissected collection of systems. Today, Dr. Verma is deeply committed to the importance of integrative medicine and practices exactly what she preaches, living her life the same way that she expects her patients to. From the beginning, her goal has been to create a practice that could give patients an opportunity for a healthier and happier version of their existence. As a well-known TV personality and blogger, Dr. Verma strives to enrich the lives of everyone she meets. She understands the frustration and angst of patients who are sick and tired of feeling tired and sick. Dr. Verma knows that in order to find a long-term cure, patients need treatments that address the root cause of their symptoms, not just address lab numbers. Dr. Verma’s relentless pursuit of total well-being embodies the essence of Synergistiq Wellness. Integrative medicine draws on the principles of Ayurveda, which arguably is the world’s most ancient and intricate medicinal system. Ayurvedic medicine comes naturally to Dr. Verma, as she is of Eastern-Indian origin, with these theories flowing through her veins. Born and raised in America, Dr. Verma has the advantage of harmonizing Western and Eastern medicine. As a 1st generation Indian, she grew up always finding a way to bridge the two cultures. Dr. Verma firmly believes that everyone should be given a chance to create a happier and healthier version of their existence. The preservation of health is easier than the cure of disease. Always be proactive, never reactive. Synergistiq has 2 locations, one in Clearwater and the newest one in South Tampa/Hyde Park. Services include IV therapy, bioidentical hormones, exosomes, peptides, gut health, weight loss, detox, face + body aesthetics, medical marijuana, yoga/fitness, plant-based nutrition and more. She is an accomplished Indian Classical dancer and competitive tennis player and wanderlust. She has always harbored a passion for healthy and happy living and instills those same personal values in her patients. Her philosophy and approach to optimal living resonates in how she practices medicine, which is following her 4 proclaimed pillars of a healthy lifestyle: clean diet, exercise, restorative sleep and stress reduction. Spreading the wealth means spreading health. She is a key opinion leader for Pathway Genomics, and a faculty speaker for A4M, AMMG, AMMPA, and Cutera. Dr. Verma has appeared as a medical advisor on NBC daytime Show and Bay News 9. She has also filmed pieces for PBS and Lifetime TV and with Shark Tank creator Kevin Harrington.
