CITY NEWS

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

ST YLE EV ENTS, NE WS & GOSSI P FR O M A R O U N D O R L A N D O

By Riesa Pascal

As fall approaches, the city of Orlando is on fire with fantastic events! Last month proved to be one of the best times for Central Floridians to explore the City Beautiful as crowds were low and the kickoff of fall left a joyful pep in every step. Here’s a look at just some of the incredible events that took place, just in case you missed it! Throughout the month of September, the city had the opportunity to experience the wonders of Orlando’s acclaimed culinary scene with Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining which celebrated its 18th year from August 18 through October 1. With six weeks and 45 delicious days, it was the perfect chance to enjoy three-course, prix-fixe dinners at many of Orlando’s most popular restaurants, including MICHELIN Guide honorees, for just $40 or $60 per person. In addition, up to $2 from each meal served will benefit one or more local nonprofits that help people in need. For the second year, participants could upgrade dinner and a movie to dinner and an overnight stay with Visit Orlando’s Magical Nights. This popular program featured special offers from some of Orlando’s best resorts and hotels — including many that host one or more restaurants participating in Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining. The city got their dancing shoes out for the return of the Great Irish Hooley at Disney Spring’s Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant. From September 1-4, guests enjoyed authentic Irish fare, live entertainment, new cocktails, complimentary face painting and of course, the Raglan Road Irish Dancers. Now in its 11th year, this year’s event was kicked off by multi-instrumentalist, singersongwriter and winner of several Irish music awards, Sina Theil. Other bands 10 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

who performed over the four-day event included Strings & Things, Byrne Brothers, One of the Foxes, Oliver Havlin and fan favorite, The Connemara Ramblers. Some of the delicious food on the menu included classics like Fish and Chips, Shepard’s to Die for Pie and the all-new Guinness & Onion Soup. Culinary teams on site were also whipping up some fantastic new drink selections including a new “Stars & Hearts” Keeper’s Heart Whiskey flight and an Irish bourbon and blackberry and mint “Heart of the Hooley” cocktail. Kennedy Space Center celebrated Future Voyagers Month with free one-day admissions to all children for the whole of September! Each family could enjoy up to three children free with every one adult ticket purchased. Visitors of all ages enjoyed interactive exhibits, incredible attractions, thrilling simulators, behindthe-scenes tours, rocket launch viewing opportunities and much more including the new All Systems Are Go! Experience. Having launched earlier this year, the experience features everyone’s favorite four-legged cartoon friend, Snoopy, and other beloved Peanuts® characters. The immersive experience also features stateof-the-art puppetry, lights and sounds. Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz invited residents to join them in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 through October 15. This year, the national theme is "We Are All, We Are One,” highlighting the diversity inherent within the Hispanic community and helping to strengthen each other with a united vision in partnership to elevate the Hispanic community and our nation. As a diverse and inclusive community, the City of Orlando celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanishspeaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month,

the City of Orlando is also hosting an art exhibition featuring a variety of historical and worldwide dominoes, domino game tables, selection of unique, custom, and handmade pieces by Domino USA organization, as well as art pieces from local visual artists dedicated to this renowned family sport. The art exhibition will continue through November 13 at the Terrace Gallery at Orlando City Hall. Oktoberfest came early this year with Krush Brau Park in Kissimmee kicking off their popular beer celebration event on September 15. The event featured all of the best and well-known German beers, food, and gifts. On display and available for all the beer enthusiasts were some of Central Florida’s breweries favorite Oktoberfest beers. In addition to a keg tapping ceremony, guests also enjoyed several themed contests including bier stein holding, yodeling, German limbo, German Schuplattler dance, best dressed Oktoberfest person and much more. The fun continues through October 22 so be sure to check it out! Continuing its mission to use creative media as a catalyst to inspire and educate people to initiate positive change in their local communities and worldwide, the Global Peace Film Festival (GPFF) celebrated its 21st anniversary this year. From September 18-23, GPFF once again employed a hybrid format to deliver a robust program of thought-provoking films and art exhibits to people all over the world. Over the course of the festival, a selection of feature length and short films will be presented in person at locations in Winter Park and Orlando. These films highlight themes such as civil rights, environmental justice, ethics, human rights, immigration, music, social justice, voting, wellness and wildlife. By design, GPFF is programmed to intersect with the International Day of Peace (United Nations), September 21. In years past, this unique festival has brought up to 7,000

filmmakers and filmgoers from all walks of life to Central Florida, inspiring them to take action in their daily lives and to leave the world a more peaceful place than they found it. Visitors of all ages were invited to join Pumpkin Ponderosa's 5th annual fall festival on September 23 to pick their perfect pumpkin from an impressive pumpkin patch, take great family photos, and enjoy various activities! Just some of the fun available to guests were trying themed beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic), feeding exotic and farm animals, mining for gems, taking a monster truck adventure, playing on the shaded playground, enjoying the food trucks, shopping for goodies in the Old Time Country Store and much more! Were you in one of the many groups who spent time together outdoors, and made some wonderful memories? If not, there’s still time to do so! Pumpkin Ponderosa continues everyday this fall from 9am6:30pm.

BEAUTY

DEADLIEST

Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

What you need to know before going under the knife!

14 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

BEAUTY

Cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular as more people seek to enhance and improve their appearance. Celebrities, influencers, and everyday individuals flock to clinics across Florida in search of that perfect look – but it’s important to recognize that cosmetic surgery comes with risks. Just recently, a Kim Kardashian lookalike, Christina Ashten Gourkani, paid the ultimate price for her desire to look like the star after undergoing yet another plastic surgery. Unfortunately she suffered a cardiac arrest and died. While most procedures are relatively safe, some cosmetic surgeries carry a significantly higher risk of complications or death than others. Below are five of the deadliest cosmetic surgery procedures and what you need to know before going under the knife. 1. LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries, but it can also be extremely dangerous if not carried out correctly. For example, in 2022 Hank Williams Jr.’s wife, Mary Jane Thomas, died of a punctured lung that happened when liposuction went wrong. Complications from liposuction can include infection, bleeding, blood clots, organ damage, nerve damage, and even death. Fat embolism syndrome (FES) is a rare but life-threatening condition that can occur after liposuction and involves fat entering the bloodstream and being deposited in the lungs or other organs. These risks are heightened if large amounts of fat are removed or multiple areas are treated in a single session. 2. BREAST AUGMENTATION

3. BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT (BBL)

5. ANESTHESIA

The BBL has recently gained popularity, but it’s also the deadliest of all cosmetic surgery procedures. The Brazilian butt lift promises to deliver more aesthetically pleasing, fuller, and rounder buttocks. BBL plastic surgery involves removing unwanted fat from other body parts, such as the abdomen, back, or thighs, and grafting it into the buttocks through small incisions.

While virtually all cosmetic surgeries require anesthesia, “going under” can be as dangerous as the procedure itself. There are four categories of complications associated with anesthesia:

The appeal of the BBL also lies in the fact that it does not require the use of implants, which some patients may feel uncomfortable with. However, BBL has a high mortality rate, with 1 in 3,000 procedures resulting in death. This can be attributed to fat embolism, where fat is accidentally injected into blood vessels, leading to complications such as pulmonary embolism and cardiovascular issues. At least 15 women in South Florida have died from BBL complications over the last few years. Despite the dangers involved, its popularity continues to rise, making it crucial to weigh the potential risks against the benefits before making an informed decision. 4. BODY LIFT (BELT LIPECTOMY)

Breast augmentation involves inserting implants to enhance breast size and shape and is another very common cosmetic surgery with potential risks and complications. These can include implant rupture, infections, auto immune disorders, and scarring. Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare type of immune system cancer that can develop following breast implant surgery. Symptoms of BIA-ALCL may include swelling, pain, and lumps in the breast or armpit. While BIA-ALCL is rare, it is important for those who have had breast implant surgery to be aware of the potential risk and monitor for any symptoms.

Essentially multiple surgeries in one, body lifts target different areas of the body at once to improve one’s silhouette. This can include a thigh lift, tummy tuck, genital lift, or buttock lift. Body lifts are more complicated and tend to carry a higher risk than other cosmetic surgeries because of the multiple procedures involved in one session and the longer duration of anesthesia. Complications include cardiac and pulmonary complications, deep vein thrombosis, fluid accumulation, persistent pain and swelling, bleeding, numbness, infection, scarring, and more. A study of body lifts found that 36% of patients who underwent the procedure experienced a complication, with wound separation being the most common.

• Errors made by healthcare personnel • Adverse reactions to the anesthesia technique • The physical condition of the patient • Sentinel incidents or events Common complications include postoperative bleeding, allergic reactions, airway obstruction, and death in rare cases. For example, a Boca Raton teenager recently had a fatal reaction to anesthesia during breast augmentation surgery. South Florida is the epicenter of cosmetic surgery and cosmetic surgery complications. Many of the physicians who perform these procedures are not properly trained or do not have appropriate supervision. In conclusion, understanding the potential dangers associated with cosmetic surgery procedures is crucial before making a decision. Choosing a qualified, experienced, and board-certified cosmetic surgeon who takes the necessary precautions can help minimize the risks associated with these procedures. Above all, if you or a loved one has been injured due to a botched cosmetic surgery, a qualified board-certified personal injury attorney can help protect your rights and provide you with the best possible outcome. Leighton Law has successfully obtained some of the largest verdicts and settlements in Florida for our clients. NORMA

Selected Works by Norma Canelas Roth October 20, 2023 - January 28, 2024 at Orlando Museum of Art Norma Canelas Roth, a dedicated collector, lender, and advocate for the arts, pursued her passion for painting at the University of South Florida after earning her BFA from Rollins College. Her artistic style bears resemblance to that of Miriam Shapiro and other artists associated with the Pattern and Decoration Movement of the 1970s and 80s, with whom she shared close ties. Norma and her husband, William Roth, have maintained a longstanding connection with the Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) since 1983 when the museum organized the Pattern and Decoration Works exhibition featuring pieces from their collection. Over the ensuing decades, they generously gifted numerous artworks and lent their support to OMA. This exhibition, a posthumous tribute to Norma's artistic talent and her benevolent nature, marks her first solo showcase as an artist. It features a vibrant array of textured mixed media paintings, offering a glimpse into her creative spirit and artistic contributions. 16 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

A Gem-Inspired Masterpiece The inspiration behind the Amethyst Droptail is rooted in the gemstone world. The client’s deep connection to gemstones, particularly the amethyst, gave rise to a design that embodies the purity, clarity, and resilience associated with this precious stone. The vehicle’s exterior finish is a tribute to the Globe Amaranth wildflower, which blooms in the desert near the client’s residence. The duotone paint finish mimics the flower’s different stages of bloom, showcasing a soft purple hue with an iridescent silver undertone. The commitment to detail is evident in the complex carbon fiber pattern adorning the lower sections of the vehicle. The chevron

pattern, meticulously book-matched along two axes, showcases the dedication of Rolls-Royce artisans to achieve geometric perfection. Craftsmanship and Detail

HALLOWEEN THE ORGINS OF

TRADITIONS

By Heather Thomas

C

arving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and wearing scary costumes are some of the time-honored traditions of Halloween. Yet, the Halloween holiday has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “SAH-win”), a pagan religious celebration to welcome the harvest at the end of summer, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor saints. Soon after, All Saints Day came to incorporate some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before All Saints Day was known as All Hallows Eve, and later, Halloween. Here is a look at the origins of some of the classic Halloween traditions we know today.

FUN

CARVING JACK-O’-LANTERNS The tradition of carving Jack-o’-Lanterns originated in Ireland using turnips instead of pumpkins. It is allegedly based on a legend about a man named Stingy Jack who repeatedly trapped the Devil and only let him go on the condition that Jack would never go to Hell. But when Jack died, he learned that Heaven did not want his soul either, so he was forced to wander the Earth as a ghost for eternity. The Devil gave Jack a burning lump of coal in a carved-out turnip to light his way. Locals eventually began carving scary faces into their own turnips to frighten away evil spirits. SEEING GHOSTS The festival of Samhain marked the transition to the new year at the end of the harvest and beginning of the winter. Celtic people believed that during the festival, spirits walked the Earth. Later on, Christian missionaries introduced All Souls’ Day on November 2, which perpetuated the idea of the living coming into contact with the dead around the same time of year. WEARING SCARY COSTUMES In order to avoid being terrorized by all the evil spirits walking the Earth during Samhain, the Celts donned disguises so that they would not be mistaken for spirits themselves and be left alone. TRICK-OR-TREATING There is much debate around the origins of trick-or-treating, but generally, there are three theories. The first theory suggests that during Samhain, Celtic people would leave food out to appease the spirits traveling the Earth at night. Over time, people began to dress as these unearthly beings in exchange for similar offerings of food and drink. The second theory speculates that the candy boon stems from the Scottish practice of guising, which is a secular version of “souling.” During the Middle Ages, generally, children and poor adults would collect food and money from local homes in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls’ Day. Guisers dropped the prayers

in favor of non-religious practices with the inclusion of songs, jokes, and other “tricks.” A third theory argues that modern American trick-or-treating stems from “belsnickeling,” a German-American Christmas tradition where children would dress in costume and then call on their neighbors to see if the adults could guess the identities of the disguised. In one version of the practice, the children were rewarded with food or other treats if no one could identify them. BLACK CATS The idea of being spooked by black cats dates back to the Middle Ages when these dark felines were considered a symbol of the Devil. It didn’t help that centuries later, accused witches were often found to have cats, particularly black ones. People began to believe that the cats were a witch’s “familiar”–supernatural entities that would assist in their practice of dark magic–and black cats and spookiness have been linked ever since. BLACK & ORANGE The traditional Halloween colors of black and orange also traces back to the Celtic festival of Samhain. For the Celts, black represented the “death” of summer while the orange symbolized the autumn harvest season. BOBBING FOR APPLES The game of bobbing for apples has been a staple at Halloween parties for many years, but its origins are more rooted in love and romance. The game traces back to a courting ritual that was part of a Roman festival honoring Pomona, the goddess of agriculture and abundance. While multiple versions existed, the gist was that young men and women would be able to predict their future relationships based on the game. When the Romans conquered the British Isles in 43 AD, the Pomona festival blended with the similarly timed Samhain, a precursor to Halloween.

say that pranks started as part of May Day celebrations. But Samhain, and eventually All Souls Day, also included good-natured mischief. When Irish and Scottish immigrants came to America, they brought with them the tradition of celebrating Mischief Night as part of Halloween. Lighting Candles and Bonfires For much of the early history of Halloween, towering bonfires were used to light the way for souls seeking the afterlife. These days, lighting candles have generally replaced the large traditional blazes. DEVOURING CANDY The act of going door-to-door for handouts has long been a part of Halloween revelries. But until the mid-20th century, the “treats” children received were not necessarily candy. Things like fruit, nuts, coins, and toys were just as likely to be given out. Trick-or-treating rose in popularity in the 1950s and it inspired candy companies to market small, individually wrapped candies. People began to favor the confections out of convenience, but candy did not dominate at the exclusion of all other treats until the 1970s when parents started fearing anything unwrapped. CANDY CORN A candymaker at the Wunderle Candy Company in Philadelphia is sometimes credited with inventing the tri-colored candy in the 1880s. However candy corn did not become a widespread sensation until the Goelitz Company brought the candy to the masses in 1898. Candy corn was originally called “Chicken Feed” and it sold in boxes with the slogan “Something worth crowing for.” Initially, it was just an autumnal candy because of corn’s association with harvest time. Candy corn later became Halloween-specific when trick-or-treating grew in popularity in the U.S. during the 1950s. What are some other Halloween traditions that you enjoy? PRANKING Playing pranks often varies by region, but the pre-Halloween tradition known as “Devil’s Night,” is credited to a different origin depending on the source. Some ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM | 23

HOW TO DEFEAT

SELF-SABOTAGING

MONSTERS By Maha Chaudhry

We have all been faced with it. Sometimes it creeps up when we’d least appreciate for it to. The creeper I am referring to is self-sabotage, and it preys on fear, specifically, fear of failure. According to Dr. Judy Ho, author of the book Stop Self Sabotage, the behavior exemplified by selfsabotage is considered self-destructive behavior as a biological response. When there’s a mismatch between our values and our behavior, that’s when self-sabotage takes place. It often stems from deep-seated beliefs, fears, and habits. It can also sometimes be linked to cognitive dissonance - the psychological discomfort associated with internal contradictions. But, there is good news - this bad guy can be taken down. With selfawareness, reshaped beliefs, and consistent effort, you can break free from these patterns. Here are some steps to help you defeat self-sabotaging behavior. Identify Triggers

Break Goals into Smaller Steps

Shift Your Narrative

Pay attention to the triggers i.e. situations, emotions or thoughts that are contributing to self-sabotaging behavior. Understanding your triggers can help you prepare for, and manage more effectively.

Large goals can be overwhelming, leading to procrastination and self-sabotage. Break your goals into smaller, more manageable steps. This makes progress feel more achievable.

Challenge Negative Beliefs

Tip

Self-sabotage often stems from negative beliefs about oneself or the world. Challenge these beliefs by questioning their validity. Are they based on facts, or are they distorted perceptions?

Making a clear-cut list of to-dos’ and break it down to help you prioritize most urgent to least urgent.

Similar to challenging negative beliefs - you have the power to change your mindset. Once you feel a self-sabotaging thought or feeling kicking in, replace it with a more optimistic outlook. Understand you are not your thoughts or feelings, and you have the ability to make good things happen.

Example

You meet someone unexpectedly, but due to a pattern of recurring disappointment, you let fear kick in before something has the full opportunity to begin between the two of you, as you immediately imagine a negative scenario or outcome. Self-sabotaging fear says: “I am not deserving of love.” Reshaped belief says: “I am working on being better, therefore better is coming my way. I am deserving of a loving, healthy relationship.”

30 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Replace Unproductive Habits

Replace self-sabotaging behaviors with healthy habits. This will train your mind to seek a more productive alternative. Example

If you cope with stress by overeating, explore healthier ways to manage stress, such as exercise or mindfulness. Cultivate Self-Compassion

Be kind and compassionate to yourself. Self-criticism can perpetuate self-sabotage. Treat yourself as you would a close friend, offering encouragement and support.

Example

Self-sabotaging narrative says: “I don’t have what it takes to be an entrepreneur.” Optimistic narrative says: “As an aspiring entrepreneur, I am open to learning what I don’t know, seeking the help I need, and becoming better every day.” Experiencing self-sabotage can feel selflimiting, but with a persistent, mindful mindset, you can defeat the thoughts that restrict you. Remember, the goal is not perfection, it is progress. No matter how big or small, progress is progress. At the end of the day, do not let fear i.e. selfsabotage win - kick that monster to the curb and set yourself free.

CELEBRITY SOUP

CELEBRITIES WHO HAVE

By Riesa Pascal The spooky month of Halloween is upon us! What better way to celebrate all things supernatural than by revealing some of those most bizarre haunted home encounters experienced by celebrities? You won’t believe what these stars had to say about their ghostly roommates!

34 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

Matthew McConaughey While on a press tour for the 2009 rom-com Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Matthew McConaughey opened up about his own real-life ghost encounter. McConaughey claimed that his Hollywood mansion was once haunted by a ghost named Madame Bleu. He spoke about her frequent presence saying, “I was not even under the influence and she was there.” Even friends and visitors could see Madame Bleu with many coming by the home and declaring that they saw someone down the hall. McConaughey ultimately stood his ground and told Madame Bleu she was welcome to stay, but that he was not going anywhere. Fortunately the spirit eventually went away on her own and never returned. Octavia Spencer During an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Academy-Award winning actress Octavia Spencer revealed that she was living in a haunted mansion and believe it or not, wouldn’t have it any other way! According to Spencer, her ghost was the star of old western films and now protects her and her historic home which she has lived in since 2013. She shared her love for the cowboy saying, “He kind of sorts out the bad people that shouldn’t be there. He runs them out.” Courteney Cox Unfortunately, not everyone is able to love their ghost as much as Octavia Spencer. In fact, even the Scream Queen herself Courteney Cox reportedly sold her home after a creepy encounter involving a ghost and a UPS Driver. Cox’s friend and former resident of the home allegedly held a séance at the property and even other friends had claimed to see a ghost at their bedside when they stayed the night. That would be enough to send most people packing, but it

wasn’t until a UPS driver at her front door said he could see a ghost standing behind her that Cox decided that it was finally time to go. Jennifer Aniston How about we stick with the Friends gang a little longer? Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston were roommates on the beloved show, but Aniston had a very different type of roommate when she first moved to California. After a series of mysterious happenings occurring around the home, Aniston was told that she likely had a spirit in the house. After bringing in a medium to confirm the haunting, Aniston was told that the ghost didn’t like her human roommate. She was quick to move out of the apartment, but to this day she still requests the assistance of a medium or healer to cleanse every new home she moves into. Jessica Alba Jennifer Aniston wasn’t the only one who was left traumatized for life by a ghostly encounter! Actress Jessica Alba recalled being attacked by a ghost when she was just 17 saying, “I had no idea what it was. I felt this pressure and I couldn’t get up, I couldn’t scream, I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t do anything. Something definitely took the covers off me and I definitely couldn’t get off the bed, and then, once I did, I screamed, ran to my parents’ room and I don’t think I spent many nights in that house ever again!” While this sounds to me like a case of sleep paralysis, the family seemed to take Alba seriously and cleansed the home with blessings and burning sage. Salma Hayek Unlike the other celebrities on this list, actress Salma Hayek was never a true believer in her house being haunted even though everyone around her said otherwise. Even Hayek’s hired help

would continuously quit because they were scared to work in the haunted home where they claimed the piano would play by itself, lights would go on and off, and the doors and windows opened and closed. Hayek denies having any of those experiences herself and thinks alcohol was to be blamed, but she went ahead with a spiritual cleansing to please her family and rid her home of the alleged spirits. Lea Michele Glee star Lea Michele would often experience windows opening by themselves while living in her New York apartment, but she never attributed it to a ghostly spirit… at first. Then on one fateful day, Michele heard singing coming from upstairs and immediately assumed the window had come open again and someone was singing from outside. Michele spoke of what happened next saying, “I go upstairs, nothing; it’s silent. Nothing is out of place, I’m alone and I’m looking at this window and I’m like, ‘Ugh, it’s all in my head,’ and just as I said it, the window goes ‘Whoosh!’ right in front of me.” Apparently Michele didn’t appreciate having a ghost who shared her musical passions so she quickly moved on to another apartment. Jenna Bush Hagar While George Bush is very familiar with political debates, his daughter and wife are into debating things that are a little more supernatural. Jenna Bush Hager and Laura Bush both disagree on whether or not The White House is haunted with the former U.S. President’s daughter swearing she would hear ghosts talking and 1920s music coming from the fireplace in her room. The former First Lady claims otherwise and thinks the voices can easily be explained as secret service agents. While she can’t offer an explanation for the music, she maintains that her belief that a ghost never haunted the presidential mansion.

CASUAL TAILORING Casual tailoring in Florida’s October fashion scene strikes a perfect balance between looking polished and staying comfortable. Lightweight blazers with breathable fabrics like linen or cotton blends pair seamlessly with dressy shorts or chinos, exuding sophistication while keeping the wearer cool. This style transitionally adapts from casual outings to more formal occasions, making it a versatile and stylish choice for the state’s warm October climate. It’s the ideal fusion of fashion and functionality, offering men the flexibility to adapt their style to the season and Florida’s unique fashion demands.

EARTHY TONES

Dressing for the fall season in Florida October ushers in a subtle shift in men’s fashion, particularly in Florida’s temperate climate. Earthy tones take center stage, with shades of olive green, deep burgundy, and warm browns making their mark. These hues not only evoke the essence of fall but also offer a nod to the changing seasons without compromising comfort in the state’s still-warm temperatures. Earthy tones can be effortlessly incorporated into everyday attire, from lightweight sweaters to casual buttondowns, infusing a touch of autumn charm into Florida’s October fashion landscape.

While daytime temperatures may warrant short sleeves, cooler evenings call for an extra layer. Lightweight jackets or denim jackets, in neutral or earthy tones, provide the perfect solution. These versatile pieces not only add a touch of style but also offer practicality when the mercury drops. Layered over casual outfits, they strike a balance between comfort and fashion, ensuring that men in Florida are prepared for the changing elements of October while staying true to their personal style.

COLORFUL

AUTUMN Capturing the Vivid Essence of Autumn: A Fashion Palette That Transcends Time and Trends By Omayra La Bella

In this season's fashion lineup, Ulla Johnson collaborated with Brooklyn painter Shara Hughes to create a captivating range of vibrant prints.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Autumn is not a time for melancholy; it's a season for vibrant change and heartfelt reflection. From the fiery hues of Viva Magenta to the earthy elegance of Olive Oil Green, fashion this Fall-Winter is an ode to the season's beauty and warmth."

Some claim that Autumn is a depressing time of year since everything is dying. I tend to disagree! Autumn is a time for change, preparation, and enthusiastic expectation of the amazing changes which are about to occur. Autumn is a lovely season, an era of bountiful harvest, a period of flavorful flavors and aromas. An occasion for eating apples and pumpkins, cozying up by the fire at night, and soaking up the sun during the day. A period when contrasts and vivid hues are present everywhere. A time to enjoy shopping at neighborhood farmer's markets and breathing in the cool, crisp fall air. The key to this change in season is to pay attention to all the sights, sounds, smells and gatherings. We must let go of the beauty brought by our blossoming plants as they wither, dry up, or freeze. The trees start to show their "true colors" as the green starts to fade and the magnificent reds and gold in its many hues begin to shine through. The ground crunches under our feet as the dried leaves fall to the ground. We may show profound thanks for everything, including our eyes that can see the colors and a nose that can smell the changing season. Spending time outdoors and photographing stunning landscape shots are ideal throughout this season. Enjoying nature and the surroundings is the best way to unwind and regenerate. Autumn jump starts the busy Holiday season. The back-to-school, Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons are all busy times. Autumn is the time of year to give thanks and spend time with those you love. It is the ideal time to switch up your decorations by including orange, red, and yellow hues, as well as to break out the candles with a spicy aroma. The season inspires us to reflect on the experiences we and our families have shared over the last year, as well as the memories created while anticipating a brand-new and exciting year.

Fall Season – Trending Fashion Colors

and beige for a sophisticated and earthy appearance.

Fall color trends often change from the summer's pastels and brights to deeper, warmer tones that capture the essence of the season, but occasionally the season's popular hues might be unexpected. There are many clothing options in lovely fall hues for a pleasing and fashionable look, regardless of your own taste.

Yellow is the undeniable star of the Fall/Winter 2023–2024 fashion season. This hue, which is related to the radiance and warmth of the sun, is taking up more space on the catwalk and is expected to become a long-lasting trend.

As a participant in this year’s New York Fashion Week for Autumn-Winter 2023– 2024's, I witnessed first-hand, the debut of innovative and striking color schemes that transcend space, time, and identity. A wide variety of hues and tones were also displayed on the runways in London, Milan, and Paris, supplying a variety of alternatives for making attractive outfits for the season. With a color palette that extends from red to green, yellow to brown, and blue, the chromatic trend for Autumn-Winter 2023/2024 overall delivers remarkable comebacks and confirmations. Viva Magenta is red with purple undertones and has a vibrant and vivacious appearance. It is one of the most well-liked fashion hues for the fall, and you can find it in many apparel lines. Orange is intense and alluring and is Vogue’s color choice for the Fall/Winter 2023/2024 season. It will give a dash of vivacity and elegance to your clothing. Red Orange is a vibrant and bright shade of orange with hints of red and yellow. This color can be used either with cooler hues like grey and blue for a bolder and more mesmerizing appearance or with other warm tones like brown

Atoll Blue is a major fashion trend for the Fall/Winter 2023–2024 season, it is a strong and alluring shade of blue. Many designers have used this hue to produce stylish clothes and accessories since it is suggestive of the atoll's glistening waters. Green fabrics provide fall outfits with a touch of nature and freshness. Due to its timeless elegance, this color, which evokes the vitality of the natural world, is growing in popularity on the runways. The most popular hue of green for the fall and winter of 2023–2024 is olive oil green. Fired Brick is an elegant, sophisticated reddish-brown color, which stands out for its class and sophistication. Seasonal upgrades are necessary for every woman's wardrobe. Adding pieces to your wardrobe in the Fall season's hottest hues can drastically change both how you look and feel. There are many ways to update your seasonal look, from straightforward items to stunning evening attire and chic outerwear.

THE PRICELESS JEWEL WITHIN THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-WORTH

In a world where external validation often takes center stage, the concept of self-worth might seem elusive or even trivial. However, self-worth is not just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental aspect of our psychological well-being and personal development. Understanding and embracing your selfworth can be the key to living a more fulfilling and empowered life.

What is Self-Worth? Self-worth, often interchangeably referred to as self-esteem or self-respect, is the intrinsic value and belief in oneself. It’s the conviction that you are deserving of love, respect, and happiness, regardless of your flaws, mistakes, or achievements. Self-worth is the bedrock upon which self-confidence, resilience, and a positive self-image are built.

The Importance of Self-Worth

1

Healthy Relationships Self-worth forms the foundation of healthy relationships, whether they are romantic, familial, or platonic. When you value and respect yourself, you are more likely to set boundaries, communicate your needs, and choose partners and friends who treat you with the same respect and kindness.

2

Resilience Self-worth is a shield against life’s inevitable setbacks and challenges. Those with a strong sense of self-worth are better equipped to bounce back from failures,

By Natalie Smith

setbacks, and criticisms. They understand that their worth is not determined by external circumstances.

3

Mental Health Low self-worth is often linked to mental health issues like anxiety and depression. When you constantly doubt your value, negative thoughts can spiral out of control. Nurturing self-worth can act as a protective factor against these mental health challenges.

4

Pursuing Goals Believing in your worth can be a powerful motivator for pursuing your goals and dreams. It gives you the confidence to step out of your comfort zone, take risks, and persevere when faced with obstacles.

5

Authenticity A strong sense of self-worth allows you to be more authentic and true to yourself. You are more likely to pursue passions and interests that align with your values and less likely to conform to societal expectations that don’t serve your wellbeing.

How to Cultivate Self-Worth

1

Self-Reflection Take time to reflect on your strengths, accomplishments, and values. Acknowledge and embrace your imperfections as part of what makes you unique.

2

Positive Self-Talk Challenge and replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations. Treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion you would offer a friend.

3

Set Boundaries Learn to say no when necessary and prioritize self-care. Boundaries protect your self-worth by preventing others from taking advantage of you.

4

Seek Support Consider seeking the guidance of a therapist or counselor to explore and address underlying issues that may be affecting your self-worth.

Self-worth is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for a healthy, happy life. It’s a profound understanding that you are inherently valuable and deserving of love, respect, and happiness. Cultivating self-worth is an ongoing journey, but the rewards are immeasurable – stronger relationships, resilience in the face of adversity, improved mental health, and the empowerment to pursue your dreams authentically. So, cherish the priceless jewel within you, your self-worth, and let it guide you towards a brighter, more fulfilling future.

Dr. George Mitrogogos and his team at Sanford Dental Excellence strive to help their patients make the most of those opportunities. Education & Credentials

Dr. George Mitrogogos was born and raised in Orlando, FL. He graduated with honors from the University of South Florida and was awarded a scholarship from the U.S. Army to attend Dental School. He earned his Doctorate in Dental Medicine from Tufts University Dental School in Boston, MA. While on Active duty, Dr. Mitrogogos completed a one-year advanced education in dentistry and for five years he served as an Army Dentist, where he focused on cosmetics. Dr. Mitrogogos has completed over 2500 additional hours of dental continuing education to stay abreast with all advances in dentistry. He utilizes his advanced training and experience to treat even the most challenging dental situations.

To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call 407-320-1700 or visit www.sanforddentalexcellence.com.

Our Office

Since 2011, Sanford Dental Excellence has been a family-owned private practice. Our practice offers comprehensive dental care in one location in a state-of-the-art facility. Spa-like amenities, the most advanced technology and excellent customer service (900+ 5 star reviews) are just a few of the benefits when visiting our practice. While able to provide all dental services, Dr. Mitrogogos focuses on treating mature adults, using IV conscious sedation dentistry for anxious patients, replacing missing teeth with dental implants, and providing “Fountain of Youth Dentures”. What Sets us Apart

IV Conscious Sedation - Dr. Mitrogogos is part of a very small niche of general dentists in the state of Florida that offer IV sedation for all dental procedures. Many patients put off dental treatment out of apprehension or fear of discomfort, and IV conscious sedation allows these patients to get the needed dental work while snoozing through the procedure. IV sedation is a great option for those with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, extensive treatment needs, or time constraints.

DENTISTS OF THE YEAR

VARSHA GANESSINGH, D.M.D. Oasis Dental Dr. Varsha Ganessingh knew that she wanted to be a dentist at a very young age. At the tender age of six years old, she would use her fingers to wiggle and extract her deciduous teeth with ease, almost as if it were second nature. Also, her aunt, who was a dentist, inspired her to pursue dentistry as a career.

years ago in dental school, mentioned in one of his lectures, that they needed to treat every patient as if it were their mother in the chair. Almost 15 years later, these words still reverberate in her head, and is the principle behind how she chooses to practice dentistry.

After graduating from the University of Florida in 2000, she attended Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. Four years later, she graduated with her Doctorate of Dental Medicine (D.M.D) Degree. Shortly after, the City Beautiful came calling, and she has been practicing here in Orlando ever since.

Dr. G loves all aspects of dentistry but gets a special fulfillment from cosmetic dentistry. She has witnessed patients go from being insecure and not wanting to smile, to being more confident and not wanting to stop smiling! This has changed a lot of patients’ lives for the better, and she loves that she is able to help make that happen.

In 2011, she started up her own practice, Oasis Dental, in downtown Orlando. She has consistently been voted annually by her peers as one of Orlando’s Top Dentists, since 2007. Dr. G (as her patients and staff call her), believes that dentistry should be practiced from the heart. A professor of hers

In her spare time, Dr. G enjoys spending time with her husband Raj and her 9 year old twin daughters, Arya and Raya. She is an avid animal lover, and has 2 pomeranians Sassy and Lulu, a maltipoo Lily, and a cat Tux.

JORGE A. ROMERO Kids On Board Transportation Jorge Romero was born and raised in Orlando, FL., in the Dr. Phillips part of town. He attended Dr. Phillips High School where he graduated in 1998 with honors. He shadowed his father’s entrepreneurial skills by opening the Downtown Market and Café sandwich shop on Orange Ave. in Orlando. The sandwich shop thrived, but soon after, Jorge wanted something different. Continuing in his father’s footsteps, who opened a bus charter company of his own in 1978, Jorge decided to take his shot at the bus transportation business. He sold the sandwich shop and used that money to invest in a 57-passenger motorcoach. He struggled to find the perfect name for the company, then one day while driving down a local road, he caught sight of a school bus and the name hit him like a flash, “Kids on Board Transportation.”

He began building relationships with local clients, which included UCF, City or Orlando, Disney and the various local theme parks, several churches and corporate groups. Jorge built his company with the acronym, SOAR; Safety, On Time, And Reliability. With that in mind, he managed to grow a respectable reputation with many other bus charter companies, never thinking of them as competitors, but rather more as a partnership. In the past eight years since Kids on Board Transportation came to fruition, Jorge has expanded from that one bus he invested in, to a fleet of 17 beautiful motor coaches. With his business ever expanding, not only does he have a group of professional, courteous and knowledgeable drivers, he also has a separate accounting and reservations department.
