CITY NEWS

STYLE EV ENT S, NEWS & G OSSIP FR OM A R OUND OR L A ND O How are we already more than halfway through 2023? Year after year, I never cease to be amazed when the time comes for us to publish our July/ August Summer Double Issue which goes to show that the old adage “time flies when you’re having fun” is more than true when you live in the City Beautiful. In fact, let’s take a look at some of our favorite events from June, just in case you missed it! June was Bite30 month and foodies across the city were eager to start the celebrations! Bite30 is Orlando's 30+ Day Restaurant Week featuring the best local restaurants and chefs driving Orlando's culinary scene. Participating restaurants offered special prix fixe menus with multi-course dinners at a set price of $35 per person. Diners delighted in the opportunity to try multiple dishes on the restaurant’s menu for the cost of a single entree, and restaurants got to showcase their specialty dishes to the new customers attracted by the Bite30 menu. It was a win-win for all! From June 10th-11th, retailers at Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets hosted several on-site and in-store activations to entertain shoppers all weekend long in honor of National Outlet Shopping Day. Shopping enthusiasts could visit Prada, MCM, Tumi, and Longchamp for luxury in-store experiences, and then stop by Under Armour, Columbia Sportswear, and Haagen-Daz for exclusive offers and fun family activities. Onsite entertainment included a live DJ, a Gif camera selfie booth, face painting, air brush tattoos, lawn games and even the opportunity to build your own floral bouquets. “The Florida Vintage Market” is a unique outdoor shopping experience in the heart of downtown Orlando with over 30 local vendors. On June 11th, the community pop-up market took over Ivanhoe Park Brewing and invited shoppers to explore their vendor offerings and enjoy a curated variety of vintage clothing, sustainable fashion, street wear, custom clothing, sneakers, makers, artists, food trucks, drinks from the brewery, and so much more! From June 16th-17th, Harry Potter fans across the city got to see when Harry discovered a mysterious potions book in CineConcerts’ presentation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince™ in Concert! Projected onto a giant screen at Dr. Phillips Center and accompanied by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, attendees joined in on Harry’s adventures as never before. Nicholas Hooper’s wonderful score and this classic tale

combined to deliver all the adventure, humor, and suspense fans expected in an experience that will never be forgotten. Lake Lily Park was a hub of history, culture and love on June 17th for the Central Florida Juneteenth Celebration! Attendees joined Jo-Jo of Star 94.5 to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States in a fun and engaging atmosphere. The event proved to be a memorable occasion filled with lively music, delicious food and inspiring cultural performances. Visitors of all races were encouraged to come out and learn about the history of Juneteenth and its significance to the African American community. The beautiful family-friendly event brought the Juneteenth celebrations to a close with an epic fireworks show that was a delight for all. Orlando knows how to do brunch so Orlando Brunchfest aimed to celebrate some of the best local restaurants serving up tasting size portions of the brunch items they do best. On June 24th, the event took over Festival Park featuring bottomless brunch beverages – Bloody Marys, Mimosas, Blue Chair Bay Rum Brunch Punch, and beer. Attendees also got to enjoy live music with an onstage DJ giving away cash prizes, XFL season passes and promotional giveaways from event sponsors. Proceeds from the Orlando Brunchfest were donated to the wedding charity WeddingWish.org. The highly-anticipated Pineapple Festival returned to Lake Nona Town Center on June 24th! The Puerto Rican-themed street festival inspired by the Festival De La Piña Paradisíaca featured live music, authentic food, incredible entertainment, and a kid’s zone! The vibrant event was open to the public and free for all to enjoy. A variety of artisanal vendors provided attendees with the perfect excuse to do some impromptu shopping with everything from crafts and jewelry to henna tattoos and much more. Thanks to the generous support of Wawa, Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales was pleased to offer Wawa Summer Fun Days with complimentary admission from June 29th-30th! The partnership began in 2021 and the offer was expanded in 2022 when over 12,000 participants received complimentary admission to the Central Florida park. Summer Fun Days continue July 27th28th, August 24th-25th, and September 28-29 2023 so make sure you pre-register to receive complimentary tickets!

HEALTH

The Mindful S T R E T C H Unlocking Mental Health Benefits Through Stretching In our fast-paced world, where stress and anxiety seem to have become the norm, finding effective ways to improve our mental well-being has become paramount. While exercise and meditation are well-known strategies, another simple yet powerful tool is often overlooked—stretching. Beyond its physical benefits, stretching has a profound impact on our mental health. In this article, we will explore the mental health benefits of stretching and how it can be incorporated into our daily routines for greater overall well-being.

Stress Reduction

Improved Sleep

One of the most significant benefits of stretching is its ability to alleviate stress. When we experience stress, our muscles tend to tighten, leading to physical discomfort and mental tension. Stretching helps release muscular tension, promoting a sense of relaxation. By focusing on slow, deliberate movements and deep breathing, stretching activates the body’s relaxation response, reducing stress hormone levels and promoting a calm state of mind.

Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining optimal mental health. However, many individuals struggle with insomnia and poor sleep quality. Stretching before bed can be an effective pre-sleep ritual to relax the body and mind, facilitating a smoother transition into restful sleep. Gentle stretches, such as those targeting the neck, shoulders, and hips, can relieve tension accumulated throughout the day, promoting a sense of calmness and aiding in the ability to unwind and achieve a more restorative sleep.

Improved Mood Regular stretching can have a positive impact on our mood and emotional well-being. Engaging in stretching exercises releases endorphins, often referred to as the “feel-good” hormones. Endorphins not only act as natural painkillers but also elevate mood, reduce feelings of anxiety and depression, and promote a sense of overall well-being. Incorporating stretching into your daily routine can help uplift your spirits and create a positive outlook on life.

Enhanced Mindfulness Stretching provides an excellent opportunity to cultivate mindfulness—a state of non-judgmental awareness of the present moment. As we engage in stretching exercises, we become more attuned to our bodies, focusing on the sensations, movements, and breath. This increased bodily awareness helps us shift our attention away from intrusive thoughts or worries about the past or future. By practicing mindfulness during stretching, we can create a mental space that fosters relaxation, clarity, and a sense of inner peace.

Increased Focus and Concentration In today’s age of constant distractions, maintaining focus and concentration can be challenging. Stretching can serve as a powerful tool to improve cognitive function and mental clarity. By increasing blood flow to the brain and activating the parasympathetic nervous system, stretching helps enhance alertness and focus. Taking short stretching breaks during mentally demanding tasks can recharge the mind, enhance productivity, and combat mental fatigue. Incorporating stretching into our daily routines offers a multitude of mental health benefits. By reducing stress, improving mood, fostering mindfulness, promoting better sleep, and enhancing focus, stretching becomes a powerful self-care practice for maintaining and improving mental well-being. Whether it’s a few minutes of gentle stretching in the morning, a midday stretching break, or a bedtime routine, make it a habit to stretch regularly and experience the transformative effects it can have on your mental health. Embrace the mindful stretch and unlock the profound potential it holds for your overall well-being.

Surprising Celebrity Godparents By Riesa Pascal

CELEBRITY SOUP

Hollywood’s A-listers have a tendency to strike up some surprising friendships with their equally famous peers so it should come as no surprise that those friendships often result in some pretty interesting choices for godparenting. Read on to see a few of the celebrity godparent and godchild combinations that we were shocked to learn about… how many did you know? Dolly Parton If you’ve ever seen an episode of Hannah Montana, you may have noticed a cameo from the one and only Dolly Parton portraying the role of Miley’s godmother, Aunt Dolly… but is it “acting” when you really are Miley Cyrus’ godmother? Believe it or not, the Jolene singer has had strong family ties to the Cyrus’ family even before the pop star was born. Jamie Lee Curtis Yet another surprising godparent connection is between Jamie Lee Curtis and Jake Gyllenhaal. Not only is Curtis a godmother to Gyllenhaal, the duo actually lived next door to one another during the Covid-19 lockdown and kept each other company with the Brokeback Mountain star turning to bread baking to provide some much-needed entertainment for the group. Curtis is close friends with Gyllenhaal’s parents, director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner. Bono Brad Pitt has been a longtime fan of U2 and became close friends with U2 frontman Bono throughout his relationship with Angelina Jolie. Unsurprisingly, Pitt ultimately chose Bono to become godfather to his twins Knox and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman Oscar-winning actors Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman became the official godparents of media baron Rupert Murdoch’s two youngest daughters following a baptism ceremony held in the River Jordan where Jesus Christ was believed to have been baptized. Not only were Kidman and Jackman present, also in attendance to mark the occasion were Kidman’s husband, Keith Urban, Ivanka Trump, and even Queen Rania of Jordan herself.

Simon Pegg Like most couples, Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin asked a trusted friend to be their daughter Apple’s godfather when she was born. Unlike most couples, that friend just so happened to be British actor and comedian Simon Pegg. Pegg and his wife returned the honor when their daughter, Matilda was born. Matilda’s famous godfather even performed a song dedicated to her when she was a baby. Steven Spielberg Perhaps Gwyneth Paltrow wanted a celebrity godparent for her daughter because she grew up with one of her own! Paltrow’s godfather is the one and only Steven Spielberg, but she doesn’t get to keep him all to herself. Spielberg also happens to be godfather to another famous actress—and friend to Gwyneth—Drew Barrymore. While Barrymore’s godfather may be impressive enough, it’s also worth noting that her godmother is iconic movie star Sophia Loren. Michael Jackson Not many people can say their godfather was the King of Pop, but being the daughter of Lionel Richie has its perks! The “All Night Long” crooner indeed did ask Michal Jackson to be one of Nicole Richie’s godfathers. So who was the other godfather? I’m glad you asked! It was none other than acclaimed music producer, Quincy Jones. When Jackson became a parent himself, he went on to name Macaulay Culkin godfather to his daughter, Paris. Aretha Franklin Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin are two of the greatest singers of all time, but that’s not the only thing they have in common! The “Respect” hitmaker had close connections to Houston’s family and was good friends with her mother Cissy Houston who sang backing vocals for Franklin. In addition to the late pop superstar having the right to boast Aretha Franklin as her godmother, her first cousin was also sixtime Grammy Award-winning singer, Dionne Warwick.

Sustainable materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and hemp are grown without the use of harmful chemicals and are more sustainable in the long term.

As the world becomes more conscious of the impact we have on the environment, sustainable fashion has emerged as a growing trend. From luxury fashion brands to fast-fashion retailers, many companies are making changes to their production methods in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint. But what is sustainable fashion, and why is it important? Sustainable fashion refers to clothing that is produced in a way that minimizes its impact on the environment and respects the rights of the people involved in its production. This includes the use of environmentally friendly materials, ethical labor practices, and reducing waste in the manufacturing process. One of the key issues in sustainable fashion is the use of materials. Traditional fabrics such as cotton require large amounts of water, pesticides, and other chemicals to grow and process. In contrast, sustainable materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and hemp are grown without the use of harmful chemicals and are more sustainable in the long term. Another important aspect of sustainable fashion is reducing waste. The fashion industry is notorious for producing a large amount of waste, with clothing ending up in landfills after just a few wears. This is not only harmful to the environment but also a waste of resources. Sustainable fashion aims to reduce waste by using recycled materials, designing clothing to last longer, and

encouraging consumers to buy less but higher quality clothing. The importance of sustainable fashion goes beyond environmental concerns. The fashion industry has a significant impact on the global economy and the people who work in it. Many garment workers around the world are subjected to poor working conditions, low wages, and long hours. By supporting sustainable fashion brands that prioritize ethical labor practices, consumers can help improve the lives of these workers. The good news is that sustainable fashion is no longer just a niche trend. Many high-end fashion brands like Stella McCartney and Gucci have made sustainability a central part of their brand identity. In addition, fast-fashion retailers like H&M and Zara are beginning to introduce sustainable collections and initiatives to reduce waste. However, there is still much work to be done. The fashion industry is still one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The industry needs to continue to make changes to reduce its impact on the environment and improve working conditions for garment workers.

Renewal Workshop and Rent the Runway are leading the charge in circular fashion, offering clothing rental and repair services to extend the life of garments. As consumers, we also have a role to play in promoting sustainable fashion. By making more conscious choices when we shop, we can encourage companies to prioritize sustainability. This includes buying from sustainable fashion brands, shopping second-hand, and investing in high-quality clothing that will last longer. In conclusion, sustainable fashion is an important movement that aims to minimize the environmental impact of the fashion industry and improve working conditions for garment workers. From using sustainable materials to reducing waste and promoting ethical labor practices, the fashion industry has a responsibility to make changes to become more sustainable. Consumers also have a role to play by making more conscious choices when they shop. By supporting sustainable fashion, we can help create a more ethical and environmentally friendly fashion industry.

One potential solution is the rise of circular fashion. Circular fashion is a concept that aims to create a closed-loop system for clothing production and consumption. This involves designing clothing with the end of its life in mind, so that it can be easily recycled or repurposed rather than ending up in a landfill. Companies like The

Trending Hairstyles That Will Elevate Your Look! When it comes to hairstyles, the options are endless, with trends constantly evolving. In today’s article, we will explore three trending hairstyles that are making waves in the world of fashion and beauty. Whether you prefer a sophisticated and polished look or crave a touch of nostalgic charm, these styles will help you express your individuality with flair. Get ready to transform your tresses with sleek updos, volumous curls, or make a bold statement with blunt bobs.

Sleek Updos! Sleek updos have become the go-to hairstyle for both formal events and everyday chic. This style exudes elegance, making it perfect for weddings, red carpet events, or even a stylish day at the office. Achieving a sleek updo starts with smooth, shiny hair. Begin by brushing your hair thoroughly, removing any tangles, and applying a heat protectant. Then, using a flat iron or straightener, straighten your locks to achieve a sleek and polished appearance. Gather your hair into a high ponytail, twist it into a bun, and secure it with bobby pins. Finish the look by adding a shineenhancing hairspray to keep every strand in place.

Volume on Volume! Embracing your natural curls is a timeless and empowering choice. Curly hair has its own unique charm, and the trend of embracing natural texture is growing stronger than ever. To enhance your curly locks, start with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner that cater to your hair’s specific needs. Once out of the shower, gently towel-dry your hair to avoid frizz and apply a curl-enhancing cream or mousse. Scrunch your hair with your fingers to encourage the formation of defined curls. If you want more volume, you can also diffuse your hair using a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. This will help lift your curls and create a fuller, bouncier look. Remember to avoid excessive touching or brushing, as this can disrupt the curl pattern and lead to frizz. Let your natural curls take center stage and revel in the beauty of your unique texture.

Blunt Bobs! The blunt bob is a timeless haircut that continues to dominate the fashion scene. This striking hairstyle is all about clean lines and a sharp finish. Whether you opt for a chin-length bob or a longer variation, the blunt cut instantly adds sophistication and confidence to your overall look. To maintain the sleekness of the bob, regular trims are essential. To style, apply a heat protectant and straighten the hair using a flat iron for a super sleek finish. Alternatively, you can add some texture and movement with a curling iron, creating soft waves for a more relaxed vibe. Complete the look with a spritz of hairspray to keep your bob intact throughout the day. Hair trends come and go, but these three styles are here to stay. Sleek updos offer timeless elegance, making them a versatile choice for any occasion. The volume brings a playful and nostalgic touch to your look, infusing it with an undeniable charm. Meanwhile, blunt bobs add a bold statement to your style, exuding confidence and sophistication. No matter which trend you choose to embrace, remember that confidence is the key to pulling off any hairstyle with grace. So go ahead, experiment, and make a statement with your locks! 44 | STYLETOME.COM

We caught up with the man behind the most respected name in Central Florida hospitality

Style Magazines Sits Down With

Harris Rosen By Riesa Pascal

PEOPLE

Rosen Inn International Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando Rosen Inn Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista Rosen Plaza Rosen Centre Rosen Shingle Creek These are a few properties that may come to mind when one hears “Rosen,” but it doesn’t even begin to cover half of everything associated with the mighty Rosen name. As a Florida resident who has lived in Orlando for over 30 years, I’ve been a first-hand witness of the impact of Rosen Hotels & Resorts on this community. The extraordinary brand is woven into the very fabric of this city and has been an important part of our history and landscape for longer than I’ve called Central Florida home. So what about the man behind the Rosen brand? Entrepreneur. Businessman. Investor. Advocate. Philanthropist. Son. Husband. Father. Friend. Harris Rosen is a lot of things, but one thing he is not is forgettable and I will forever be grateful for the cherished opportunity I had to sit down with the largest independent hotelier in Florida to get a peek behind the curtains of the distinguished Rosen name. How poetic and fitting that this took place at the very hotel that marked the beginning of Rosen history: The Rosen Inn International. This was a hotel that Mr. Rosen took a leap of faith in buying back in 1974 when International Drive was still in the middle of swamp land and forest. A hotel that saw the birth of Mr. Rosen's wildly successful business venture into hotel ownership. A hotel with a remarkably quaint, but charming office that Mr. Rosen has solely worked out of for nearly 50 years. As I stepped into this very office, it truly felt like I was walking into a life-sized scrapbook. From framed newspaper clippings and article profiles to celebrity autographs and family photos—every inch of the walls and countertop space was covered in vibrant artifacts from Mr. Rosen’s long and storied life. Mindful of

how limited the time must be for someone of Mr. Rosen’s caliber, I was shocked and profoundly touched as he rose from his desk and insisted on showing me around his office before we started chatting. Like an old friend giving you a tour of their home for the first time, Mr. Rosen was warm and chatty as he walked around the surprisingly small office space. With great detail he recalled the fascinating facts and heart-warming stories behind the collection of treasured memories surrounding us on every side. “I’m happy here. I don’t need anything fancy. I have seven hotels and some of them are really beautiful. Rosen Centre is beautiful. Rosen Shingle Creek is beautiful. Rosen Plaza is beautiful. The motels are beautiful, but this is where I stay. We have a beautiful operations building, but this is where I stay. I don’t need anything fancyschmancy. So many wonderful memories are here.” - H.R. If I had a single reason to question any of the wonderful things I’d ever heard about Mr. Rosen prior to our meeting, I would’ve had to reevaluate my position even before my interview had started. With kind, attentive eyes, and a soft-spoken voice, Mr. Rosen radiated an exuberant amount of positivity and genuine love that somehow filled the room even more than the dozens of beautiful photos and relics physically could. When it was finally time for our conversation to start, I quickly realized that there was no need for the list of questions I had prepared. I set my list aside and sat back in awe as Mr. Rosen immediately launched into an inspiring story of his life and career. With incredible detail he took me all the way back to his humble beginnings growing up in New York.

and Carnegie Tech) to which he was immediately accepted. However, a deeper calling in his heart also encouraged him to apply to Cornell’s famous School of Hotel Management. After anxiously waiting for a month or so, Mr. Rosen was accepted and spent four years studying the ins and outs of the hotel industry. “I decided not to go to art school because I didn’t know if I had enough talent to be a successful artist and if you don’t have the talent, you can’t learn talent. You either have it or you don’t. And so dad said, ‘Okay Harris, so what do you want to do then?’ I said, ‘Well I love the hotel business. You’ve been letting me work with you for years and years.’ He said, ‘So maybe hotel management?’ I said, ‘That would be wonderful, dad.” -H.R. However the journey to break out in the hotel industry was not an easy one. With a war going on in Vietnam and having gone through ROTC, Mr. Rosen was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation and still proudly displays many of his achievements from those years in the very office we were sitting in. After spending three years and several months overseas in Korea and Germany, Mr. Rosen said goodbye to the Army and officially launched his hotel career at the Waldorf Astoria as a file clerk in the personnel (now Human Resources) department. One thing led to another and over the next several years, Mr. Rosen

As the son of a safety engineer and poster artist at the Waldorf Astoria, Mr. Rosen was exposed to the hospitality industry at the young age of 10 while assisting his father on weekends. Having inherited much of his father’s artistic talent, Mr. Rosen initially aspired to be a commercial artist and decided to apply to several fine arts colleges (Pratt, Cooper Union STYLETOME.COM | 63

of his most inspiring initiatives is without a doubt the multi-million dollar Tangelo Park Program which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

began to ascend the ladder of hospitality working everywhere from New York and Pittsburgh to Dallas and Mexico. Eventually that search for his forever home and career led him to Orlando, Florida and on June 24, 1974—at a time when the Central Florida hotel industry was in economic shambles—Mr. Rosen became the proud owner of the 256-room Quality Inn fronting both Interstate 4 and International Drive. Today you know this hotel as the 728-room Rosen Inn International, the very same hotel where I was sat enthralled by the story unfolding from Mr. Rosen’s mouth. Eventually one hotel became two, then three, then four… by 2006, Rosen Shingle Creek opened as one of the largest full-service convention hotels in Central Florida and brought Mr. Rosen’s portfolio to an astonishing seven hotels. Today he remains the largest independent hotelier in the state of Florida with approximately six percent of the Central Florida hotel inventory. With so many award-winning properties under the Rosen Hotels & Resorts umbrella, it goes without saying that Mr. Rosen has made hundreds of millions throughout his career. A financial blessing that he says with unwavering conviction

was received from God alone. From the very moment that Mr. Rosen understood this to be true, he decided that offering a helping hand to those in need was going to be his way of saying thank you. Thus the Harris Rosen Foundation was born, an organization that provides funds for a multitude of philanthropic initiatives and the first of many foundations that Mr. Rosen would go on to establish. “People wonder why am I involved in so many philanthropic endeavors. It’s because I’m so grateful for what God has done for me. We have donated over the past 30-49 years, over 100 million dollars. People want to know why I have been so generous, it’s because God has been so generous to me and we’re just giving back a little bit.” -H.R. From local philanthropy like providing over 100 scholarships annually to his top-rated Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida to international acts of kindness like providing his Haitian brothers and sisters with food, educational materials, healthcare supplies and water filtration systems… Mr. Rosen’s generosity knows no bounds and continues to this day with countless programs that are making a difference in the lives of thousands. One

Tangelo Park is an underserved, highcrime neighborhood in Central Florida where Mr. Rosen’s charity has provided a free preschool education for every two, three and four year old in the neighborhood, a full college or vocational school scholarship for every graduating high school senior from the Tangelo Park area, and even a Family Resource Center for parents. The program has been a tremendous success with a significant drop in the crime rate and high school graduation rates that have improved to virtually 100 percent. In April 2016, a second similar initiative to benefit the Parramore neighborhood in downtown Orlando was also announced and Mr. Rosen is optimistic that it will experience a similar level of success. As the Rosen brand prepares for its 50th anniversary in 2024, I couldn’t help but to close out our incredible afternoon of inspiring conversation with one burning question I had for the legend seated in front of me. Still in amazement over Mr. Rosen’s remarkable story, I couldn’t hold back my fascination and curiosity as I asked him what he was most proud of when he looked back on his unbelievable accomplishments and enduring legacy. “The thing that I’m most proud of is the fact that I’m living in America. From where I started to where I am today, where else could that happen? All the money that I’ve donated to charity is an indication of how much I love this country. My daughter and I are writing a book about my life and we’re calling it ‘Only in America.’ I think it’s a wonderful example of what’s possible in America if you work hard and make some sacrifices. This is really an only-inAmerica kind of story. -H.R. Rosen Hotels & Resorts 1.866.33.ROSEN (76736) www.rosenhotels.com www.rosengivesback.com

ORLANDO’S ELITE DOCTORS 2023

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.

Alexander Schroeder, MD Mid-Florida Surgical Associates Dr. Alexander Schroeder joined MidFlorida Surgical Associates in 2020 after relocating to Central Florida from Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Schroeder was born and raised in Buchholz, Germany. Following in his father’s footsteps, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Hamburg. Dr. Schroeder found his passion for hernia surgery when working at Hamburg Hernia Center, Europe’s largest hernia center. In 2014, Dr. Schroeder was part of a German team of surgeons and researchers who published new hernia surgery techniques that contributed to a change in the field towards alternative minimally invasive repairs. He then moved to Omaha, Nebraska to complete his surgical residency at Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr. Schroeder learned to perform advanced hernia repairs including mini- or less open sublay (MILOS) and robotic techniques for abdominal wall reconstruction. The common concept of these techniques is to keep any implanted mesh outside of the abdominal cavity. This avoids contact between bowel and mesh. At Creighton University Medical Center, Dr. Schroeder participated in the first MILOS series in the United States. The excellent outcomes were then presented at the European Hernia Society Meeting in 2019.

Dr. Schroeder is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a proctor and teaches other surgeons to perform daVinci robotic surgery. He is also a member of several professional organizations including the American Hernia Society, German Hernia Society, European Hernia Society, American College of Surgeons, and Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons. At Advent Health Winter Garden, Dr. Schroeder and his partners at MidFlorida Surgical Associates have built the fastest growing robotics program in the region. Patients benefit from their shared experience of more than 6,000 robotic procedures performed. Benefits may include less pain, less complications, and faster return to normal activities. Recently, Dr. Schroeder has participated in humanitarian surgical missions in Paraguay and the Dominican Republic. He joined a team of international hernia experts to provide the highest level of surgical care to underserved patients. Dr. Schroeder and his wife Morgan, a Central Florida native, have four children: Ella, Finn, and newborn twins, Devin and Landon. His family is of utmost importance to him and he enjoys spending time together, playing soccer, and the outdoors.

Philip T. Hardy, MD Legacy Family Medicine and HardyHealth The proverbial question of what came first, “the chicken or the egg” can be applied to Legacy Family Medicine and HardyHealth. Legacy Family Medicine and HardyHealth were established to promulgate the long tradition of health and vitality the Hardy Family has enjoyed since the 12th century. Originally from Normandy, France in the 12th century, they immigrated to the Jersey Islands and then settled in Devon England in the 14th century. The fundamental pillars of clean dietary habits, abstinence from tobacco and alcohol, daily exercise and quality sleep allowed the Hardy Family to reach over 100 years of age since the 1800’s. Legacy Family Medicine was established in 2010 to utilize educational and lifestyle strategies for overall health improvement. Dr. Hardy and his staff have been successful in guiding patients to better health and often reduction/ and or elimination of pharmaceutical medications.

Hardy Health opened in 2013 and offers procedures and services to assist our patients. The Trigger Point and Joint Injection Program with Traumeel (homeopathic injectable) and Hyaluronic acid (Supartz) has helped literally thousands of patients to maintain their mobility and choices of activity level with reduced pain. Medical Cannabis Certifications have been offered at Hardy Health since early 2017. Our certification process includes explaining the benefits of the Endocannabinoid System and how it interacts with the body and the nervous system. Qualified conditions and comparable conditions are certified with an individualistic approach with careful consideration of past medical problems and medications used and specific guidance on the various routes of administration with benefits and risks. We welcome new patients to our practice and are excited to share in your journey towards “Better Living through Better Health!.”

HEALTH

The Journey to Finding Your

SPARK! By Maha Chaudhry

86 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

HEALTH

When I think of purpose, in matters of fulfillment and self-discovery, I simultaneously think of “the spark.” If I were to explain the meaning of a spark, I would describe it as an inner passion that speaks to us and ignites something deeper within. We can successfully look to what speaks to us, in other words, our spark, to help us find our purpose or passion better. Sometimes purpose and spark coincide, and sometimes they don’t have to. Because whether it is spark or purpose, it is still igniting our soul to move towards a transformative journey. Here are five steps you can take to embark on the journey of self-discovery when finding your spark. Pay attention to your emotions. How you engage in conversation about a subject or during an activity can be really telling. Does the activity make you feel more alive? Are you more energized? When talking about the particular topic, do you feel excited? Does it make your eyes light up? Pay attention to these cues. Play detective to your curiosity. If you feel compelled to learn more about something, chances are it has peeked your interest and created curiosity. This is great on the road to self-discovery because curiosity will lead you to finding answers that will help you better understand opportunities the future holds for you. Be open to new experiences. Some of our best memories and experiences are yet to happen. And sometimes they happen when we step outside of our comfort zone and open ourselves up to new experiences. You never know what you might find. Look for inspiration. Inspiration is all around us. Sometimes it takes the form of our role models, a story we read, a movie we watch or a podcast we listen to. Explore what resonates with you, and take account of the journeys of others and what inspired them to get to where they are today. Seek Self-Reflection. Sometimes it helps to write everything down. Journal your thoughts and get deep with yourself. Ask yourself questions like what brings you joy? What do you look forward to? What would you like to do more of? Allow yourself the freedom to explore all the possibilities. It’s never too late to find your spark, nor is it too late to find purpose or passion in anything that moves you. As we continue to evolve, so do the things that move us. Therefore, there is no need to limit ourselves to a single passion that may be worth pursuing.
