OUR TOWN

TIME TO MAKE MAGIC AGAIN! By Courtney Caggiano

Summer in Florida just doesn’t seem complete without a staycation at one of our world-class theme parks, and thankfully, after months of pandemic-related closures, our favorite local parks are finally opening their gates to a highly anticipated summer of fun.

14

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

OUR TOWN

UNIVERSAL ORLANDO RESORT When Universal Orlando announced their plans to reopen on June 5, theme-park fans nationwide began to see the light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. Whether you decide to take the post-pandemic world one small step at a time and begin by simply visiting Universal Citywalk, or you want to jump right back into the fun with Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, or Volcano Bay, Universal Orlando is longing to make your summer one to remember with just as much thrill as before. Perhaps even book a weekend getaway at one of Universal’s luxurious hotels and resorts. Whatever Universal locale you decide to visit, there are new safety guidelines that you will need to follow in order to ensure that your stay is as carefree as possible. All guests are required to wear face coverings, as well as undergoing temperature checks. You will notice staggered parking and limited ridership to the parks’ attractions, as well as increased cleaning and disinfecting of ride vehicles, dining locations, and other park areas. As of now, you’re probably a pro at social distancing, and your new six-feet-apart skills will come in handy, as this is a must for all guests. Select attractions even have Virtual Line experiences. Plan your stay today by visiting universalorlando.com.

WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT Walt Disney World has invited guests to once again experience the magic that only Disney can bring as early as July 11, when Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom will reopen. Following closely behind, Hollywood Studios and EPCOT will allow entrance beginning July 15. If you’re not planning on entering the parks but still want to enjoy the wonder of Disney World, you can now visit Disney Springs, which has once again opened its exciting restaurants and shops. As you begin to make more magical memories, you will need to be aware of Disney’s new safety procedures. Due to the limited capacity for the theme parks and resorts, Disney World will manage attendance through a new reservation system. New ticket sales and hotel reservations will be temporarily paused so that Disney can focus on those with existing vacation plans. All guests at any park or Disney Springs must wear masks or face coverings and expect temperature checks, and intense cleaning procedures will take place to ensure your safety during your visit. Although large-group events such as parades and nighttime spectaculars may not return for some time, many rides and attractions will still be available to the public. Unfortunately, Mickey and Minnie may be careful about shaking hands and posing for pictures, but don’t worry! The famous couple and their Disney character friends will still make appearances throughout the parks. You can find more details at disneyworld.disney.go.com.

BUSCH GARDENS TAMPA BAY Tampa’s very own Busch Gardens is open again and ready for you to experience the joy of this Floridian theme park. Come spend an afternoon enjoying the park’s amazing attractions and rides, as well as getting up-close views of some of the most beautiful wild animals in the state. Before planning your visit to Busch Gardens, be sure to pay attention to the theme park’s COVID-19 guidelines. All guests over the age of two must be wearing a face covering before entering the park; however, there will be designated relaxation areas where guests may remove their face covering. Busch Gardens has also implemented enhanced cleaning protocols at high-contact areas, such as arrival turnstiles, dining locations, and ride vehicles. Be sure to maintain your six feet, whether you are waiting in line for your favorite attraction, viewing the animal exhibits, or checking out in one of the gift shops. Stylistic fine-tuning for sharper looks. As on the BMW 5 Series range, the updated BMW kidney grille drops down further into the front apron and its chrome surround has a one-piece design framing both elements of the grille. M-specific double bars and an M badge are present and correct. The front apron has bolder contouring and larger air intakes at the sides, while the expansive central air intake is hexagonal in shape and incorporates the oil cooler and the radar sensor for the Active Cruise Control (ACC) system. The new L-shaped light tubes searing in narrow streaks towards the kidney grille add a dynamic flourish to the newly designed LED headlights. The new option of BMW Individual lights Shadowline adds a dark-tinted accent to the Adaptive LED Headlights and BMW Laserlight. The aluminium bonnet, the front side panels with the signature M gills, the streamlined M exterior mirrors and the roof made from carbon fibrereinforced plastic (CFRP) join the BMW kidney grille’s double bars as hallmark design features of the performance models in the BMW 5 Series range. The thinner walls of the M-specific twin tailpipes create a greater sense of high-tech precision. The muscular rear apron with large diffuser has also been restyled, as have the threedimensional LED rear lights, whose precise light graphic provides a fresh take on the familiar BMW L shape. TRACK mode for an undiluted M feeling in the BMW M5 Competition. In the BMW M5 Competition, keeping the M Mode button pressed then confirming the prompt in the central display engages the additional TRACK mode. This mode is designed exclusively for use on race circuits and deactivates all the comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems. To focus the driver’s attention even more intently on the road ahead, the audio system is also muted and the central display switched off. The result is an ultra-pure distillation of M feeling. The instrument cluster switches to M View, while the Head-Up Display dispenses with readouts from the driver assistance systems. Automatic activation of the hazard warning lights in

response to emergency braking is suppressed and the collision warning system is also deactivated. Pressing the M Mode button again exits TRACK mode and returns to the ROAD setting. Imposing power from high-revving V8 engine. The V8 unit under the bonnet of the BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition goes about its business in racing-car-derived, highrevving style – i.e. with imposing muscularity and supreme power delivery. The BMW M5 generates its maximum output of 441 kW/600 hp at 6,000 rpm, while the BMW M5 Competition’s 460 kW/625 hp also comes on line at 6,000 rpm. The duo’s peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) arrives as low down as 1,800 rpm and is sustained at this elevated level all the way to 5,600 rpm in the BMW M5 and an even higher 5,860 rpm in the BMW M5 Competition. The engine characteristics can be changed at the touch of a button from the basic EFFICIENT mode to SPORT and SPORT+, resulting in even more willing response to movements of the accelerator. The BMW M5 sprints from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, putting it firmly into super-sports car territory. And it only requires 11.1 seconds to power to 200 km/h (124 mph) from rest. The BMW M5 Competition completes both tasks a fraction more quickly: 100 km/h (62 mph) is up in 3.3 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.8 seconds. The top speed of the BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition is 250 km/h (155 mph) – or 305 km/h (189 mph) with the optional M Driver’s Package specified. The flap-controlled dual-branch exhaust system of the BMW M5 and the M Sport exhaust system on the BMW M5 Competition – likewise with a dual-branch and flap-controlled design – produce the soundtrack to match. A more understated engine note can also be summoned with the M Sound Control button. The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission fitted as standard enables extraordinarily short shift times and fast, precise responses to every nudge of the accelerator. The Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector allows three modes to be chosen for efficient, sporty or dynamically intense track driving – the latter involving extremely rapid gearshifts. The driver can use both the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel to intervene manually.

CELEBRITY SOUP

Celebrity Stalkers when an admirer crosses the line from fan to stalker By Riesa Pascal

Being rich and famous may come with plenty of perks, but not without a sometimes terrifying price! Part of being a celebrity means having your every move followed, and thanks to the internet, it’s now easier than ever for fans to track down their favorite idols. Here are six stars whose stalkers will make you glad for once that you aren’t rich and famous.

22

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

JOSH GROBAN

SELENA GOMEZ

TAYLOR SWIFT

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Josh Groban was recently granted a restraining order against a fan who’s been obsessed with him for years. Groban says he met the woman through a mutual friend online and had made plans for them to go on a date until he got sick and had to cancel. When the woman kept pestering him about cancelling, Groban told her he was no longer interested in meeting up at all. Since then, she’s been bombarding Groban with texts, emails, DMs, graphic packages and even going so far as to contact his family members and his current girlfriend. The woman told Groban she knows where he lives in Los Angeles and also claimed she went to his home when he wasn’t there. In June, a judge agreed to grant Groban a temporary restraining order ordering the woman to stay 100 yards away from him, his family and his girlfriend in addition to stopping all online contact.

In 2011, Thomas Brodnicki was charged with felony stalking of Selena Gomez, but had the charges dismissed. The judge in the case refused to issue a restraining order against Brodnicki until he could appear in court and defend himself. In a surprising turn of events, Brodnicki sided with Gomez in her bid for a permanent restraining order against him and filed a sworn declaration telling the judge, “I do not wish to object to the restraining order against me because I know it is the only thing that will make me stay away from Selena.” In another declaration, Brodnicki told an LAPD Detective that he had over fifty conversations with God a day about killing Gomez... talk about creepy!

In 2018, a fan accused of terrorizing Taylor Swift and her family was sentenced to 10 years of probation. The man named Frank Edward Hoover began sending the pop star’s father, Scott Swift, disturbing letters in 2015 that promised to kill their entire family. Hoover referred to himself as the “real son of God” and called the Swifts “the evil family of devils.” Incredibly this wasn’t Swift’s first terrifying encounter with a fan. In 2011, Swift received a restraining order against a man who believed he was married to Taylor and vowed to murder anyone who came between them. He sent her emails, letters, and tweets saying frightening things like, “If anyone in Taylor Swift’s family gets killed, it is not my fault.”

JOHN LENNON

MADONNA

BEYONCE

Sadly, not every stalker story concludes with a happy ending. One of Hollywood’s most frightening stalker stories belongs to John Lennon. In 1980, the Beatles star was shot outside of his Manhattan home by Mark David Chapman, a fan who had become incensed by Lennon’s lifestyle and public statements such as his remark about the Beatles being “more popular than Jesus.” Chapman remained at the scene reading The Catcher in the Rye until police arrived and had planned to cite the novel as his manifesto. Unfortunately, Lennon succumbed to his injuries and the world mourned the loss of an icon. Chapman pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.

The Queen of Pop has had her fair share of frightening encounters with stalkers. One fan’s stalking was determined to be such a threat that he was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1996. Robert Dewey Hoskins had been obsessed with the icon for years and her bodyguards were forced to shoot him when he hopped the fence at her Hollywood Hills home. Hoskins was an extremely violent man and had said he was either going to marry Madonna or “slash her throat from ear to ear.” Hoskins served his time and was committed to a mental institution, but he escaped from the facility in early 2012. Thankfully, the man was caught by police and put back into custody, leaving Madonna and her family safe once again.

Beyonce is no stranger to conspiracy theories such as claims she faked her pregnancy and the wildly spread notion that she is a member of the Illuminati. However, one fan took conspiracy theories to a whole new level back in 2009 when he sent threatening letters to Beyonce that accused her of being an impostor who killed the real Queen Bey in order to take over the star’s life. The British fan named Bassey Essein allegedly tried to give Beyonce a personalized book full of notes on religion because he believed it would “help” her. The threatening letters led the court to slap Essein with an anti-harassment order. The case cost the star tens of thousands of pounds in legal fees, but Essien was warned to stay away from Beyonce and banned from contacting her or her entourage. I think it’s safe to say someone has been watching a little too much Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

STYLE MD

Be honest.

Does this microbiome make me look fat?

28

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

STYLE MD

B Y D A W N H A R R I S S H E R L I N G , M . D . , F. A . C . P. Carbs or fat? Atkins or South Beach? We spend a lot of time, energy, and money trying to figure out which diet to choose. We agonize over our options and then, a few weeks or months later, we feel guilty when we abandon whatever program we signed up for. But what if I were to tell you that what you think matters very little in terms of your weight. How your bacteria feel about it, on the other hand, probably makes all the difference. If you haven’t already heard, our intestines (primarily our large intestines) are filled with billions of bacteria contributing more towards the total DNA in our bodies than our actual cells do. This is called the gut microbiome. And our microbiome may be influencing our weight more than anything we choose to do. Our bacteria might be the tiny generals sending out commands to the rest of our body by way of chemical signaling—ordering us to eat more or less and possibly even directing our cells on whether to expend or conserve calories.

THERE IS SOME EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST THAT WE PROMOTE THE BEST OF OUR MICROBIOME WHEN WE EAT REAL, UNPROCESSED FOOD. Sounds crazy, right? Well, scientists thought so too until 2015, when a study demonstrated that mice fed emulsifiers commonly used in human food (used to make ice cream smooth and baked goods fluffy), were fatter. We can’t digest these emulsifiers and neither can the mice. They pass through to the intestines and are actually used as food by the bacteria in the microbiome. This bacterial food, also called “prebiotics”, causes so-called bad bacteria to grow like, well, to grow

like bacteria that you’ve just given a lot of food to. Then, these multiplying bacteria signaled the mice to eat more, perhaps in an effort to further increase their own growth. But, that’s mice. They are dumb. They listen to bacteria. Humans are higher order beings and we can control ourselves, right? Maybe not. In 2019, scientists took 20 people and housed them in a lab for two weeks. Everything they ate was provided to them and recorded. For two weeks, they were given a diet of unprocessed foods—no emulsifiers or other additives—just fruit, nuts, veggies, meats, whole grains, and other “whole” foods. They could eat as much or as little as they wanted. Then, those same people were fed an ultra-processed diet for two weeks—with the same additives the mice were given plus a few more—basically stuff that comes wrapped in plastic or is available in the freezer section of the supermarket. Those same people ate an average of 500 calories a day more during the ultraprocessed phase of the diet and as a result, gained about 2 pounds in two weeks. Everything else during the study was the same— carbs, fats, protein, sleep, exercise, sodium. The only difference was the food additives in the processed foods. And importantly, most of these additives aren’t food for us, but for our gut bacteria. Unlike the mice study, the human study didn’t check for the ultraprocessed foods’ effect on the participants’ microbiomes, but many other studies have shown that the emulsifiers and taste enhancers used in processed foods changes the composition of human microbiomes. It isn’t a far leap to consider that what we feed our microbiome, how much and which bacteria we promote by our food choices, wind up determining what signals get sent to our brains and stomachs.

So, what food should we choose? Which diet promotes the most weight loss? Yet another study showed that some people lose a tremendous amount of weight on low carb, while others actually gain weight on the same diet. Likewise, people can lose a ton of weight on a low fat diet, while others gain weight. This holds true for almost every weight loss plan. What works for your friend may not work for you. And this may be due to the fact that although people are remarkably similar, our microbiomes are astoundingly different. There is some evidence to suggest that we promote the best of our microbiome when we eat real, unprocessed food. Our brains get the signal to eat less and our bodies get the signal to burn more. We may not be what we eat, but our bacteria certainly are. There are a lot of things we could be doing to be healthier, but feeding yourself and your microbiome the foods that nature intended may be a good place to start.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

BEACH BUM

NO MORE By Autumn Barker With the official start of summer underway, we’ll be logging countless hours by the pool and on the beach. While there is nothing better than relaxing on the beach and soaking up the sun, it can be a bit intimidating to parade around in public in our bathing suits - especially while we are still working on building our tan. We have compiled a collection of onthe-beach exercises to help you tone and define your muscles so you’ll have the confidence to strut your stuff this summer. Working out in the sand provides extra resistance to any exercise you do and gives your muscles an extra challenge in stabilizing you. In addition to the extra physical challenge, you’ll also get a mood boost from the additional Vitamin D you’re soaking up. And what better way to get your body beach ready than on the beach?

Just like before any workout, take the time to properly hydrate, warmup, and stretch your muscles. Warming up is important because it increases blood flow and oxygen to the muscles, which increases flexibility, decreases chance of injury, and decreases fatigue.

SAND JOG Begin your workout with a two-minute jog parallel to the water. If you have weak ankles, run closer to the waterline where the sand is firmer. For an extra challenge, run in the softer sand.

SAND LUNGES Lunge forward with one foot. Keeping your front knee above your ankle, lower to the ground so your back knee brushes the sand. Push up

“WORKING OUT IN THE SAND PROVIDES ADDITIONAL RESISTANCE TO ANY EXERCISE YOU DO AND GIVES YOUR MUSCLES AN ADDED CHALLENGE IN STABILIZING YOU.” through the front foot, lift your back foot off the ground and use it to step forward into a second lunge. Be sure to keep your stomach tight and hips aligned with your shoulders throughout the exercise. Do six to 12 lunges on each side.

How it works: Doing this exercise in the sand destabilizes your hands and feet, activating your hamstrings and glutes while working your core muscles.

How it works: Because the sand isn’t level, you’ll have to activate the muscles in your entire lower body and core to keep yourself stable.

Do 10-15 push-ups facing away from the water so that you are working at an incline.

BEACH CRAWL On soft, dry sand, lower into a plank position. Crawl forward on your hands and feet for 30 to 60 seconds while maintaining your plank. Too easy? For an extra challenge, try going sideways and backwards as well.

INCLINE PUSH-UPS

Extra tip: Do these push-ups down by the waterline where the sand is firmer so that your wrists have better support.

Return to the low plank position and repeat with your left leg in front. Do 10-15 reps on each leg. How it works: This exercises engages all of your major muscle groups and provides them with an additional stability challenge. Focus on keeping your glutes tight and core engaged throughout the exercise.

BEST FRIENDS

SAND Between Their Paws By Keyla Exclusa

WITH BEACH OPTIONS FOR YOU AND YOUR CANINE COMPANION, YOU CAN GET BACK TO BEING BEST FRIENDS WITH YOUR DOG AGAIN. Summer is upon us, and family trips to the beach are rooted in Florida tradition. But some families feel incomplete without their pawed companions, since many beaches don’t allow pets nor have the space for them to play. However, the following beaches have everything you need to enjoy the summer with the entire family or with just you and your canine companion! Smyrna Dunes Park Smyrna Dunes Park is located on the New Smyrna Beach peninsula where water from the Indian River flows into the Atlantic Ocean and Ponce De Leon inlet. The two miles of beach dock walkways make a perfect place for one to take their dog on a walk amongst the natural landscape that makes up Smyrna Dunes Park. Leashes are required. Picnic areas and pavilions are also available for shade, rest and entertainment for the whole family. Ft. De Soto Paw Playground and Beach Large fenced-in areas give your four legged friends room to run free at Ft. De Soto Paw Playground. Specified areas at Ft. De Soto are completely free for dogs to enter the ocean and play off leash; a very rare experience to share with your pet. Drinking water and dog showers are also available. Overnight camping sections and picnic areas alongside the dog showers are the trifecta that make Ft. De Soto Paw Playground irresistible for the whole family. Located in St. Petersburg, FL, an old Spanish fort still stands and is available for visits, adding on to the unique experience to be had at Ft. De Soto.

Flagler Beach With 19 miles of crowd-free sand, Flagler Beach reigns in as one of the best local beaches to go and unwind with your pet. Dolphins and turtles are often sighted on Flagler Beach. Plenty of space is allotted to go for a run with your dog or walk on the Flagler Beach Municipal Pier overlooking the water. Bait and fishing poles are available for rent on the pier. With all the fun to be had at any of our beautiful local beaches, be sure to keep your dog hydrated and cool. Excessive drooling and panting can be a sign of dehydration and heat exhaustion in dogs. Keep your dog under a shaded area or bring an umbrella if there aren’t any shaded areas for your dog to rest under. Also, keep a cool, wet towel for your furry friend to lay on, which will help them cool down. Dogs cool down from the bottom up, therefore letting their bottom side or stomach rest on a cool, wet towel does them more good than spraying them down from above. Also, pack a water bottle for your dog along with any fluids you pack for yourself. For dog snack alternatives to also keep them cool, try thinly slicing an apple, banana or sweet potato (or all three!) and placing the small slices in ice cube trays to create simple frozen treats to keep your dog happy and hydrated. Chicken or beef broth frozen into ice cube trays also works for frozen puppy treats to help them beat the heat. Put them all in an ice-cooler with plenty of ice. With beach options for you and your canine companion and ways to keep them happy and hydrated, you can get back to being best friends with your dog again. (No need for a dog sitter this summer!)

BARFLY

BARFLY Recipe 1 seedless watermelon 1/2 cucumber 2 limes, juiced 1/2 cup mint, muddled 8 oz vodka, chilled 1 bottle sparkling water, chilled ice cubes

CHEERS TO SUMMER!

Watermelon & Cucumber Mojitos Stay cool this summer with a subtle spin on your average mojito. Replacing the typically heady rum with a soft splash of vodka assists in a harmonious, fruity flavor. Delicately fresh with watermelon and cucumber, this icy drink is glacial perfection. Pulp is not required, but if partial to texture, then it can be added in any amount. Sparkling water and lime lend a mild kick to the muted fruits.

Fans of fresh herbs will be especially keen on the addition of mint, whether it is from a personal garden or the store. If a sweeter flavor is preferred, simple syrup or sugar can be added, as well as an ample dose of watermelon. For anyone with an aesthetic flair, a wedge of watermelon and cucumber slices make this drink ideal for hosting guests. Simple to make and enjoy, test out these tantalizing flavors during summer get-togethers or when relaxing poolside.

- In a blender, blend watermelon and cucumber together. Strain using a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp and set juice aside (in fridge to chill). - Juice limes, then muddle with mint using a wooden spoon or a muddler. - Put the mixture in a shaker with ice and shake for 15-20 seconds. Strain into a large pitcher. - Then add vodka and a bottle of sparkling water. - Pour into glasses filled with ice and enjoy!

LIFESTYLE

We’ve heard them all: “Staying up to hash things out can actually make matters worse.”

“Don’t go to bed angry,” “Marriage is hard” and many more. With so many relationship rules, it can be difficult to separate the fact from the fiction. Style Magazines has identified five of the most common relationship myths and debunked them to help you better navigate the river of love.

1. “NEVER GO TO BED ANGRY” We’ve all been told this at some point in our lives, but following this rule can result in numerous late nights, repeating the same argument with no resolution. In fact, staying up to hash things out can actually make matters worse, as sleep deprivation and emotional and mental exhaustion lower your ability to make good judgements and rob you of self-control. It’s better to put the argument on hold and agree to come back to the discussion once you’ve both had the chance to rest. Often, you’ll wake with a clearer understanding of the situation and a better idea of how to resolve the conflict.

2. “YOU MUST DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER” Common interests and a degree of interdependence create an incentive for couples to stay together, but this doesn’t mean you and your partner must, or should, do everything together. Doing activities separate from your partner ensures that you’ll always have adventures to share with each other.

3. “A PERFECT RELATIONSHIP MEANS NO CONFLICT” It’s obvious that if your relationship is filled with constant turmoil and unresolved conflict, it’s probably in trouble. But a complete lack of conflict can kill a relationship just as quickly, because it signals that you might not be addressing important issues. Couples who avoid conflict tend to be less happy over time because instead of addressing problems as they arise, they brush the issues off and allow the negative emotions attached to the problem to fester. Don’t avoid the tough conversations; learn how to disagree in a healthy way. When dealt with in a productive manner, conflict can actually strengthen a relationship as it forces you and your partner to work together to come to a solution.

4. “RELATIONSHIPS ARE HARD WORK” Negating this myth depends entirely on your definition of the word ‘work.’ When you view your relationship as something you have to ‘work’ at maintaining, like you would a car that repeatedly breaks down, your love life may begin to feel like a chore. That being said, relationships do require attention and effort from both parties to be successful.

5. “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” We’ve been conditioned to believe that if you love your significant other enough, your relationship will work. While love is obviously a very important factor in making a relationship successful, it’s important to develop the skills needed to ensure your relationship will go the distance. Finding common ground and keeping an open line of communication are two skills that will help your relationship last.

Merideth Nagel

Merideth Nagel, P.A.

Merideth Nagel has been an attorney since 1997, finding value in helping clients navigate the often-difficult legal roads of life and business, and forging relationships with them based on mutual caring and respect— relationships she hopes will last a lifetime. Merideth Nagel’s passion for law began when she saw firsthand how her uncle, the late Senator Richard Langley, made a tangible difference in people’s lives through his work as a lawyer. “This is what I want to do. I want to really help people,” she thought to herself. After graduating law school, Ms. Nagel began working with Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente. Justice Pariente taught her so much about how to understand the law, “and more importantly, its impact on people.” She taught her that legal work is bigger than the law; it is about how the law can change people’s lives. After gaining experience with big name clients at the international law firm Holland & Knight, Ms. Nagel felt she needed to go back to her roots. As a true Central Florida girl, Clermont has always been ‘home’. She wanted to work locally and “build up our community,” fighting for her clients’ legal needs while being there for them on a personal level. Merideth founded her law firm in 2005, dedicated to “changing the world one client at a time.” True to this mission, Merideth has dedicated her time to helping her clients face whatever life throws at them and to do that, she has assembled a staff of lawyers and employees dedicated to making a difference. Merideth and her team focuse their practice on real estate, estate planning, guardianship, probate, family law, business law, foreclosures and bankruptcies among other things.

ELITE DOCTORS

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.

Dr. Cherukupally and her team have 3 standards for their practice: First, they want to create a space where people can be examined as a whole person rather than their injuries alone. Through their experience working in other offices and with their own injuries, they have seen a common thread in many other physicians’ offices: a tendency to think of clients solely as an injured body part without taking the time to step back and examine the whole body. Secondly, they want to offer an allencompassing practice that would satisfy all your physical needs. A one stop shop of conservative care, where you have access to all the top regenerative medicine and stem cell procedures under one roof. This greatly improves the communication between their team of specialists and ultimately their client’s outcomes.

Lastly, Regen seeks to empower others in the healthcare business by giving them the opportunity to treat clients the way they were trained to. In the vast majority of medical practices, health providers typically see a large volume of clientele on any given day, limiting their ability to examine, diagnose, and offer treatment to the best of their abilities. Dr. Cherukupally understands how much time, effort, and preparation goes into becoming a medical provider and that is why she will never ask her team to sacrifice quality of care. Their clients get the time they need to tell their story and ask questions. For nearly 3 years, they have been able to meet these objectives by offering people access to exceptional customer service and treatments that do not involve surgery. They are grateful to have clients who have trusted them with their injuries and look forward to continuing that trend in the Orlando area. “We are developing a powerfully engaged team whose drive is to make a difference in healthcare through educating and treating our clients with exceptional care and science based expertise.” Pallavi Cherukupally, MD “Kicking pain. Making gains. Taking Names.”

ELITE DOCTORS

Dr. Myrtho Mompoint Branch Board Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist I am honored to receive this award and privileged to have served patients in the Orlando area for the last 22 years. As a Board Certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist working with a diverse population of different ages, I am an advocate for bringing more mental health awareness, quality treatment, and education to the community. I am experienced in treating a variety of adult and childhood disorders, such as ADHD, bi-polar disorder, depression and early-onset child and adult schizophrenia. I am trained in providing alternative and non-invasive treatments for youth and adults. I find that despite all of the advances in Psychiatry, there is still a lingering stigma associated with mental health issues, and that all too often, that stigma heavily weighs on one’s decision to seek help. I strive to educate the community that mental health issues are indeed health care issues. Vulnerable communities have disproportionate access to mental health treatment, and I have worked to narrow that gap by promoting all avenues of health care including community-based alternatives. I come from a diverse background, my family having emigrated from Haiti to Chicago in the late 1960’s in search of a better life. I always knew that I wanted to be doctor, and education has always been a priority in our close-knit family, which includes a growing line of health care professionals. My mother is a retired nurse, my middle son is currently completing a residency in cardio-thoracic surgery, and several close relatives are physicians. My eldest daughter is a corporate employment attorney, and my youngest son is a senior executive assistant for a government defense contractor.

I began considering the field of Psychiatry in the early 1990’s, excited by the revolution of new lines of research and treatments. I was captivated when physicians, on a wide scale, began using evidence-based pharmacological treatments and combining them with psychological approaches in order to provide more effective care. In 1992 the prospect of being in a field in which I would be able to treat my patients as a whole brought me to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York, an institution at the forefront of advances in Psychiatry.

Awards / Recognitions • 2016 Richard B. Horning MD Faculty Award, University of Central Florida College of Medicine • 2020 Florida Top Docs • 1997 Clinical Excellence Award / Fellowship, Long Island Jewish Medical Center Professional Associations • American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry • Physician Society of Central Florida

I originally planned to focus my practice on adults, but changed my mind after observing confused families admit their young adult children for hospitalization, distressed over having missed early signals of mental health issues during the crucial adolescent years. The consequences of untreated childhood mental health disorders are often devastating. I was determined to be a part of bridging that treatment gap, and decided to further prolong my training in order to pursue a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. My treatment philosophy is the same now as it was back then: treating the initial stages of illness not only helps young patients with severe psychiatric illnesses learn to accept and manage aspects of their illnesses, but demonstrably helps mitigate important developmental and social delays. Aside from running a busy private practice in Winter Springs, I also serve as the Medical Director of Pasadena Villa, a well-regarded private psychiatric residential treatment center in the Orlando area. I have been affiliated with the University of Central Florida Medical School as an Adjunct Professor since its nascent. My philosophy is to never stop learning and discovering, give back through volunteering, and pass the torch through teaching and mentoring. During my leisure time, I enjoy outdoor fitness activities and supporting the local performing arts community.

About 50% of mental illnesses begin by the age of 14 and 75% by the age of 24 but only 10% receive any treatment or counseling from a mental health professional. Dr. Dholakia is an avid advocate for optimal mental health for adults and children alike as well as being committed to debunking the myths and breaking the stigma around mental illnesses. Stigma brings shame and stress, especially in certain cultures, reduces the likelihood that a patient will access needed health care, while increasing the likelihood that they will delay or refuse help, or drop out of treatment altogether. Early identification and treatment for adolescents and young adults with mental illness is critical for the individual as well as for the society at large to lower the burden of illness. Looking towards the future, Dr. Dholakia and our team at Orange Psychiatric Associates are excited to continue to welcome new patients to the practice.

Mattia Spinal Care & Rehab Center, P.A. Gerald R. Mattia D.C., Director

Gerald R. Mattia D.C. has been practicing chiropractic for 43 years. Even before that his life has not been ordinary. At the age of 15 he had been given 6 months to live. “I was born with a severe heart condition called aortic stenosis.” People suffering from this condition have an aortic valve in their heart that gradually degenerates and therefore the heart cannot function properly. Heart surgery in the sixties was not as successful as today. He also had bad allergies. His mother was not ready to give up. On a friend’s recommendation, she took her son to a chiropractor. “The aortic valve stopped closing at 92 percent and my allergies were gone,” Dr. Mattia said. He was able to live to the age of 35 when he received his first new aortic valve and the success rate of heart surgery was higher. Dr. Mattia became a chiropractor because of this. He earned his chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College and opened a practice in 1977. Dr. Mattia practiced in New Jersey from 1977 to 2001. During that time he received many awards: Chiropractor of the Year 1996 and Sports Chiropractor of the year several times. He was appointed to the Board of Chiropractic Examiners, on which he served for six years, by the governor of New Jersey. He was also a board of director for the International Chiropractic Association and the Northeast Regional Director. Dr. Mattia has been the president of International Chiropractic Association Sports Health and Fitness Council from 1996-2011 during which he joined Arnold Schwarzenegger every year in Columbus Ohio for the ICA Fitness Symposium. The Symposium is held in conjuncture with the Schwarzenegger Fitness Weekend. In his quest to provide clients with the best preventative and therapeutic chiropractic care available, Dr. Mattia studies research, treatments and technologies from around the world. Consequently his office houses some of the most unique, cutting edge technology available: decompression therapy machines which help with disc problems in the low back and neck eliminating the need for surgery, the LPG key module for endermotherapy, class 4 laser to promote healing, and Spine Force which offers non static exercise for patients and helps rehabilitate and develop muscle strength for the core and intrinsic muscle of the spine. It was developed in France and Dr. Mattia helped introduce it in the United States. These technologies have come to complement the fundamental chiropractic adjustment. In 2001 Dr Mattia retired from his NJ practice and moved to Florida to begin semi retirement. But the quiet time did not last too long. Outside of the office, Dr. Mattia does power walking and likes to travel and loves golf and baseball. All during his career Dr. Mattia has taken care of many athletes from middle school to professional as well as regular clientele. His love for sports has helped him understand that spinal care for athletes is required for better performance and nervous system function. Dr. Mattia practices with his wife Paulette Mattia D.C., and Guillermo Nazario D.C. Dr. Mattia has helped many chiropractic college graduates begin their careers by having them work with him and gain experience. Dr. Mattia also has a new venture consisting of non surgical regenerative therapy for knees and other joints at Viscogen in Lake Nona. Dr. Mattia has coached Babe Ruth Baseball, sponsored Team Gamez Foundation Chipping for Children, Central Florida YMCA, Orlando Union Rescue Mission and Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. Dr. Mattia’s love for his practice and clients is apparent in his contagious enthusiasm and liveliness. “ The best part of my practice is the fact that people come to our practice and get better naturally, without medication. Touching thousands of lives over the years with the benefits of chiropractic is a professional achievement. “Living to the age of 69 when I was supposed to die at 15 is a personal achievement.
