ONTRIBUTORS GREG ALEXANDER Greg Alexander is a world citizen who travels the planet to transmute all the quintessence of femininity on glazed paper. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, the ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he has found his home port. As a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which is able to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of beauty is fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

CITY NEWS

There is never a shortage of things to do when you live in the wonderful city of Orlando, Florida! Each new month brings us an exciting plethora of new festivals, shows, family-friendly events and much more. Naturally, the month of February was no exception, so here are all the highlights, just in case you missed it! What happens when you mix Disney with visual, culinary and performing arts inspired from all around the world? You get the fourth annual Epcot International Festival of the Arts which ran from January 17th-February 24th. The list of artful sights, surprises and unique experiences to explore was virtually endless with just one highlight being the Disney on Broadway Concert Series at the America Gardens Theatre. The stage lit up nightly as some of the brightest stars on Broadway performed beloved Disney songs from their award-winning shows. As part of park admission, guests also discovered amazing art galleries throughout the World Showcase. For those with an appetite for the culinary arts, there were plenty of artistic dishes with a delicious Disney twist like the Artist Palette Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie. New this year, attendees delighted in the Wonderful Walk of Colorful Cuisine. The technicolor tour allowed guests to enjoy a vibrant array of delicious dishes as they strolled the beloved festival.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! By Riesa Pascal

February 1st kicked off the 25th anniversary of Universal Orlando’s Mardi Gras celebration! Every night until April 2nd, guests of Universal Studios are experiencing nightly parades with outrageous street performers, colorful costumes and countless beads flying through the air. Of course you can’t have a great party without great food and music! In addition to authentic New Orleans bands and mouthwatering Cajun food available for purchase, attendees also get to enjoy live performances from some of the biggest names in pop, rock, country, R&B and more at the Music Plaza stage on select nights. Best of all, the festivities are included with Universal Studios theme park admission, so don’t miss out on the fun! Get your taste buds ready because SeaWorld Orlando’s Seven Seas Food Festival is back! Since February 7th, park guests have been setting sail on a taste adventure savoring over 180 mouthwatering options from international cuisines to imported craft beers to unique wines. This year’s festival provides opportunities for attendees to sample from more culinary markets than ever before including Caribbean, Asia, Mediterranean and South American offerings. To top it all off, SeaWorld also brought together their most diverse lineup of live performances ever to the stage. On February 15th, Lance Bass of NSYNC hosted the festival’s Pop 2000 Tour with O-Town, Ryan Cabrera and LFO. Every weekend until May 3rd, guests can continue to look forward to live concerts from hitmaking Rock, Country, Christian, and Latin musicians. Lunar New Year is the most celebrated holiday in East Asia and although Chinese New Year is not an official holiday in Western countries, the city of Orlando still held their own celebration thanks to a partnership between Asia Trend Magazine, Mills 50 District, R.E.A.C.H. of Central Florida and Y.E.S.S. The “Year

of the Rat” marks the 9th annual Central Florida Dragon Parade Lunar New Year Festival which has received an overwhelming response from local and distant communities alike. The Dragon Parade, which precedes the festival, was led by City of Orlando and Orange County officials together with representatives of numerous Asian organizations. Recommended by Visit Orlando as one of the must see Multicultural Festival in Orlando, this year’s event celebrated the Lunar Year with Japanese Taiko, acrobatic performances, cultural dances, cuisine, martial arts demonstrations and a lively Dragon Parade. It was a fun-filled day for the entire family! From February 22nd-23rd, the tradition continued as Orlando foodies and wine lovers experienced unique local cuisine paired with wines from around the globe at the 12th Annual Downtown Food & Wine Fest! Located in the heart of Downtown Orlando at Lake Eola Park, the two-day festival featured mouth-watering dishes from 30 of Orlando’s premier restaurants, domestic and international wines, and live entertainment with local and national performers. Case in point, this year’s headlining acts were Neon Trees and MAGIC! Just beyond the stage, tents galore filled Robinson Street, delighting guests with delicious food, beer, spirits and wine tastings. Master sommeliers and top mixologists opened bottles and minds as they showcased new wines to try and cocktails to shake. From locally-produced bourbons to single malts from Scotland... from small batches to single grains... from the new to the classics. On February 28th, Orlando Weekly’s Whiskey Business gave guests the opportunity to take their taste buds on an exploration of wheat and rye while meeting brand ambassadors who offer their unique insights and descriptions on many different products. Attendees of the annual festival sampled their way across continents to discover the best in scotches, bourbons, and whiskeys. Sample dishes from the hottest local restaurants, additional vendors, and great music rounded out the event in grand fashion — but whiskey was the main act as Orlando Weekly took taste buds on an unparalleled tasting journey! Proceed from Whiskey Business benefited The Barber Fund whose mission is to help those living with cancer. The six-date event series For the Culture is a high tech, high touch celebration of Black Culture promoting small businesses, arts, entertainment, entrepreneurship, innovation and more. The events will be highly entertaining, interactive, educational and enjoyable, making the For the Culture event series a premiere downtown Orlando destination event for 2020. February 29th, was the exciting launch & pre-roll for the free and vibrant family-friendly street festival. The event featured an urban elite setting with live music and an upbeat, stylish atmosphere. In addition to major brands and small business vendors, some of Orlando’s tech startups were also on display to introduce themselves to the community. Designed with interactivity in mind, attendees were able to shop, use photo stations, play games, win prizes and enjoy live music performances all throughout the event.

FASHION FOR WISHES ORLANDO’S NIGHT OF FASHION, PHILANTHROPY & FUN By Dana Damato

One of the city’s most fun and fashionable nights is right around the corner and anticipating its biggest and best event yet! If there’s one thing Orlando should be known for, there’s no doubt that it should be its sense of community. The community consistently and passionately unites as one to serve a greater good, and Fashion for Wishes is a perfect example of that unity. On March 27th, Fashion for Wishes will be celebrating its fourth annual fashion forward event benefiting Make-A-Wish Central & Northern Florida. This fun and fashionable night will bring over ten Central Florida based boutiques, models and local celebrity models as well as very special Make-A-Wish Kid Models all styled by Hair and Make-Up artists from Leal Marston and Trend Studios in Downtown Orlando. Fashion for Wishes stands true to its name – promoting fashion to support local children facing a critical illness. The average wish costs $8,000, and the goal of Fashion for Wishes is to grant 3-4 wishes. Proceeds are made directly to Make-A-Wish Central

and North Florida in an effort to make the wishes and dreams of these children come true. Event organizer, JR Tanghal, is no stranger to bringing the community together to support local and national charities. Fashion for Wishes really embraces a local aspect. Those participating include local celebrities, boutiques, make-up artists and hair stylists. “We are passionate about bringing people together for a great cause with Make-A-Wish by putting the FUN in Fundraising and doing great things together,” says JR. Fashion for Wishes wouldn’t be a continuous success without not only the volunteers, but the members of our community who make it out to support the cause! The event will take place on Friday, March 27th at The Balcony Orlando from 8pm-11pm. Tickets start at $50 for general admission and $100 for VIP. All ticket purchases include open bar. For more information and ticket sales, please visit the Fashion for Wishes EventBrite page: Fashion for Wishes.

THE ARTS

Art in Bloom

Festival of Fine Arts & Flowers Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking. (Insert your best Miranda Priestly glare here.)

But seriously, with springtime comes sunshine, warmer weather, allergies, and, of course, flowers. The Orlando Museum of Art is once again hosting Art in Bloom: Festival of Fine Arts and Flowers. It is a wondrous showcase of spectacularly fresh floral designs inspired by the fine arts works from the museum’s permanent collection and current exhibitions. It’s a fun-filled, three-day, harmonious marriage of flowers complementing art, and vice versa. Last year set the bar high by kicking off the festival with an exclusive ‘60s inspired Flower Power Party, stocked with an open bar, specialty cocktails, and sumptuous hors d’oeuvres amid the sounds of midcentury music, as well as a live fashion sketch experience. Renowned Central Florida florists participated in the event with their floral interpretations of OMA’s art collection, and local garden clubs also lent their floral flair. James Farmer, gardener, author, florist, interior designer, and cook and lifestyle expert, was a special guest where VIP ticket holders could pick his brain before attending his lecture and book signing. This year’s guest speakers include Carleton Varney, president and owner of Dorothy Draper & Co., and Margot Shaw, Editor-in-Chief of Flower Magazine and author of Living Floral: Entertaining and Decorating with Flowers. Hopefully, familiar floral designers will return for the festival

IT’S A FUN-FILLED, THREE-DAY,

as well as newcomers, and perhaps we can expect the return of a popup boutique selling fresh take-home plants and blossoms, a daintily

hands-on floral art workshops, a mystery home tour, antique shopping, and more. Art in Bloom: Festival of Fine Arts and Flowers is on March 26-29 at the Orlando Museum of Art.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Tired of busting your butt at the gym for hours at a time and seeing little results? HIIT, standing for

high intensity interval training, is quickly becoming one of the most popular styles of working out due to its exciting and challenging nature as well as its convenience for people on a time crunch. However, it is much more than a fleeting trend. Programs like F45, Orange Theory, and CrossFit are good examples of mixed modal forms of training, meaning they combine elements of high-intensity, strength, cardio, and circuit training to provide you with the most effective workout in less time than a trip to the local gym. No matter your fitness level, HIIT training programs have something to offer you.

You might be asking yourself, “How is HIIT any better for me than a regular trip to the gym?” The answer is simple. The science behind HIIT is the reason why a 30-minute HIIT session can be more effective than an hour running on the treadmill at the gym. To sum it up - by performing short bursts of high intensity exercise followed by short periods of recovery, you’re heart rate is rising and falling quickly, making your body work harder to stabilize. By pushing your body to the limits, it will begin pulling from stored fat for fuel, causing fat loss and muscle building. During an average F45 class, you can burn between 500 and 800 calories within the allotted 45 minutes, depending on your age, gender, and fitness level. The average person only burns about 200 calories in 45 minutes of regular exercise on their own. An additional benefit to this type of training is that you can expect to burn calories for up to 36 hours after a session – that means you’ll be burning calories in your sleep. Besides the obvious health benefits, HIIT programs are usually done in a group setting, which not only encourages a sense of community, but motivates you to challenge yourself alongside your team. Coaches are also readily available to help you achieve the correct form and keep you moving when the going gets tough. Prefer to work alone? HIIT programs are based on individual success, meaning everyone focuses on their own progress. The best part about it is that you are free to work at your own speed and level. If you’re a beginner, or just having a bad day, you can simply go down in weight or do fewer reps to tailor to your body’s needs. Success is measured based on the individual, since a 60-year-old might not perform the same as a 20-year-old. Joining a HIIT gym is more than a workout choice - it’s a lifestyle change. Perfect for busy people looking for a fun challenge, a HIIT community might be exactly what you’re looking for to make friends, reach fitness goals, and maybe even achieve the six-pack abs you’ve been wanting.

I know an infectious disease specialist who likes to elbow bump people when he meets them, saying, “My people don’t shake hands,” with a sly grin. By his “people,” the doctor means infectious disease specialists, and by not shaking hands, he is avoiding a behavior that is well known to spread respiratory and other illnesses. I know a few other people who elbow bump, and I’ve thought about doing it but am worried that people will think I am rude for not wanting to shake hands. I hear them wondering, “She doesn’t want to touch me! Does she think I’m dirty?” And yes. That is what I am thinking. Because you are. I am. We all are carrying loads of germs on our hands. And what the infectious disease doctor has known for a while now, and what the rest of us are just starting to realize, is that some of these germs are getting scary. Good infection control practices haven’t traditionally been seen as cool, sexy, or even practical. They won’t be the next jade egg or essential oil, and these tips are unlikely to find their way onto Gwyneth Paltrow’s self-help website or Oprah’s favorite things. But now there is the novel coronavirus outbreak, and people are asking in a panicked state, “What can we do to prevent it?” And since jade eggs and oils aren’t likely to be of assistance, I’d like to propose a new “coronavirus handshake.” It goes like this: don’t shake hands.

For those of you who consider this extreme, think of it like the way you prepare for a hurricane. Because following the coronavirus story is like tracking a late season hurricane still way out in the Atlantic. It could be coming our way, or go in a completely different direction, or perhaps it will peter out entirely before even coming close. We might be totally prepared for it, or it may cause total devastation. Floridians say, “Tell us when and where it is coming and how bad it will be, and we will be ready.” But coronavirus doesn’t work that way. Some track the virus for hourly updates, only to find nothing much. And it’s the not knowing that is hard. Fortunately, we do know a fair amount about how viruses are transmitted and we know what to do about it. Now is our chance to exercise that knowledge and maybe stop an epidemic. And while we are at it, we will probably slow down the transmission of flu and gastrointestinal viruses that go around during the winter and spring seasons. Here’s what we’ve known for a long time about how to stop transmissible disease, but haven’t been motivated enough to do. 1. Wash your hands. Properly. And for goodness’ sake, don’t use the high-powered hand dryers in the bathroom! These blow around whatever germs are left on your hands (and unless you just did a surgical scrub, you still have some on there). Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet (that everyone, including you, used dirty hands used to turn on) and then use a paper towel to open the bathroom door (because not everyone who just did that bothered to wash their hands).

2. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. These aren’t perfect, but they are probably pretty effective on coronaviruses. Been out touching a bunch of stuff other people touched? Use it. 3. Don’t touch your face. The skin is our best infection fighting organ, but the eyes, nose, and mouth are the way viruses find their way inside our bodies. Try to not touch them. 4. If you are sick, stay home. This might be hard for people who have jobs that make it difficult to call out, so I’ll say this clearly for teachers and employers—“LET PEOPLE WHO ARE SICK STAY HOME!” Plan for people to be out so there is enough coverage without making the sick people feel guilty for staying home. And don’t require a doctor’s note for them to do this. It wastes everyone’s time and money; gets whole waiting rooms of people who are in the office for their chronic diseases sick; and doesn’t allow the sick person to stay home and rest, which is probably what they most need. 5. And don’t shake hands until summertime. Maybe.

Plant-Based Milk The Dairy Alternative That Everyone Is Raving About — Oat, Almond, and Soy, Oh My! By Shelby Newman

Plant-based milk has become the ‘moove’ these days as cow’s milk goes out of style. In addition to its great taste and health benefits, it can be easily swapped with dairy products we eat in our everyday. Do you put calorie-heavy creamers in your daily coffee? Try using low-calorie and creamy oat milk instead of dairy creamer. Eat a bowl of Wheaties in the morning? Try replacing cow’s milk with some unsweetened almond milk – the cereal will act as a natural sweetener to the milk. Pro-tip: add a splash of plant-based milk when cooking scrambled eggs for a more creamy and fluffy texture. And the best part? There is something for everyone. With an endless list of options, you’re certain to find one that you enjoy. Whether you’re vegan, gluten-free, allergic to nuts, or simply a picky eater, there are countless plant-based milk options that are sure to check off your boxes. There are a number of reasons, health and morality related, that people are making the switch from dairy milk to options like oat, almond, soy, rice, coconut, and even pea milk. Recent scandals involving dairy farms exposed an ugly side to dairy production. Some farms mistreat cows, and even allow them to suffer in inhumane conditions. To support the betterment of farm animals, many people are choosing cow’s milk alternatives. Cow’s milk, despite what they told you in first grade, is actually not great for your health. Instead

of improving bone health, it does the opposite by depleting our bones of the calcium it needs. Additionally, a single serving of dairy milk contains as much as 24 milligrams of cholesterol and more than 20 percent of the daily-recommended dose of saturated fat, which is harmful to the heart. Plantbased milk, however, contains no cholesterol and little to no fat. Looking for an extra boost of protein in your diet? Soy milk provides the highest amount of protein of plant-based milk alternatives, while having fewer calories. It can contain up to eight grams of protein per cup, which is equivalent to the amount of protein in a cup of cow’s milk. Soy milk is also considered the most nutritionally similar to cow’s milk, allowing you to reap many of the nourishing benefits of cow’s milk without the detriments. It’s also filled with antioxidants and fiber, which are added bonuses. Oat milk, while also containing protein, has closer to four grams of protein per cup, but its high fiber content makes it richer and more filling than other plantbased milk alternatives. Next time you’re browsing the dairy section at the grocery store, remember that making the switch to plant-based milk is easy. Buying a pint of almond milk this week is a small price to pay in exchange for saving your future self, the planet, and the cows.

PORSCHE TAYCAN Sports Car, Sustainably Redesigned

With its clean, puristic design, the Taycan signals the beginning of a new era.

TOYS

“The Taycan links our heritage to the future. It carries forward the success story of our brand – a brand that has fascinated and thrilled people the world over for more than 70 years,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. The fourdoor sports saloon is a unique package, offering typical Porsche performance and connectivity with everyday usability. At the same time, highly advanced production methods and the features of the Taycan are setting new standards in the fields of sustainability and digitalisation. “We promised a true Porsche for the age of electromobility – a fascinating sports car that not only excites in terms of its technology and driving dynamics, but also sparks a passion in people all over the world, just like its legendary predecessors have done. Now we are delivering on this promise,” emphasises Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board of Porsche AG – Research and Development. The first models in the new series are the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo. They are at the cutting edge of Porsche E-Performance and are among the most powerful production models that the sports car manufacturer currently has in its product range. Less powerful variants of these all-wheel drive vehicles will follow this year. The first derivative to be added will be the Taycan Cross Turismo at the end of next year. By 2022, Porsche will have invested more than six billion euros in electromobility.

Performance meets efficiency The flagship Turbo S version of the Taycan can generate up to 560 kW (761 PS; Taycan Turbo S: combined power consumption 26.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 0 g/km) overboost power in combination with Launch Control, and the Taycan Turbo up to 500 kW (680 PS; Taycan Turbo: combined power consumption 26.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 0 g/km). The Taycan Turbo S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, while the Taycan Turbo completes this sprint in 3.2 seconds. The Turbo S has a range of up to 412 kilometres, and the Turbo a range of up to 450 kilometres (according to WLTP in each case). The top speed of both all-wheel-drive models is 260 km/h.

The Porsche Taycan on the road

current (DC) from the high-power charging network for a range of up to 100 kilometres (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 percent SoC (state of charge) is 22.5 minutes for charging under ideal conditions, and the maximum charging power (peak) is 270 kW. The overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kWh. Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to eleven kW of alternating current (AC) at home.

Pure exterior design with Porsche DNA With its clean, puristic design, the Taycan signals the beginning of a new era. At the same time, it retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA. From the front it looks particularly wide and flat with highly contoured wings. The silhouette is shaped by the sporty roofline sloping downward to the rear. The highly sculpted side sections are also characteristic. The sleek cabin, the drawn-in rear C-pillar and the pronounced shoulders of the wings result in a sharply emphasised rear, typical of the brand. There are also innovative elements such as the glass-effect Porsche logo, which has been integrated into the light bar at the rear. With a Cd value from 0.22, the aerodynamically optimised basic shape makes a significant contribution to low energy consumption and thus long range.

Unique interior design with a wide display screen band The cockpit signals the start of a new era with its clear structure and a completely new architecture. The freestanding, curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. This places a clear focus on the driver axis. A central, 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. All user interfaces have been completely newly designed for the Taycan. The number of classic hardware controls such as switches and buttons has been greatly reduced. Instead, control is intelligent and intuitive – using touch operation or the voice control function, which responds to the command “Hey Porsche”.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This is a particular advantage for Taycan drivers on the road: in just over five minutes, the battery can be recharged using direct

CELEBRITIES

WITH INSURED BODY PARTS When your limbs are your main source of income, you better insure them and insure them well! By Riesa Pascal

From the legs of athletes to the fingers of musicians, celebrities taking out insurance on their body parts is far from being a new thing. In fact, it’s a practice that goes back to at least 1915, when Charlie Chaplin insured his twinkle toes for $150,000 which would be more than $3 million today. Let’s take a look at some other A-list celebrities who have insured their most famous assets.

34

| STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

Daniel Craig

America Ferrera

While on the set of Quantum Solace, James Bond actor Daniel Craig performed many of his own stunts and came to realize that he was not actually as invincible as Mr. Bond would have us believe. As a result, Craig decided to take out an insurance policy on his whole body that guaranteed him a $9.5 million payout in case he was seriously injured. That may not have been a very Bond-like thing to do, but we certainly don’t blame him!

Julia Roberts isn’t the only celebrity with a 1,000-watt grin! At the time of filming Ugly Betty, America Ferreira became a spokesperson for Aquafresh White Trays, a teeth whitening manufacturer. After Ferrera agreed to work with the company on a new charity campaign, they had her smile insured for £7 million ($10 million). Ferrera spoke of the insurance saying, “It’s very flattering to have my smile insured for $10 million; it’s not something that I ever imagined happening. I’ll try my hardest to take care of it.”

Dolly Parton Country singer-songwriter Dolly Parton is hard to miss for two... err... very large reasons. Her ‘biggest’ assets which she affectionately refers to as “the girls” are her famous 40DD breasts. Just to be sure that nothing bad happens to them, Dolly first had them insured for $600,000 in the 1970s. Today they are insured for a whopping $3.8 million.

Oliver Lewis The fastest violinist in the world knows exactly what his ten best assets are. That’s why Oliver Lewis insured his fingers for $100,000...each! Lewis spoke of his pricey digits saying, “I won’t go chopping up coconuts with a machete. It’s common sense, really. My fingers are the tools of my trade and I’d be lost without them.” Amazingly, Lewis is far from having the most expensive fingers in the world. The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards had just his guitarstrumming middle finger insured for a cool $1.6 million. My guess is that he also isn’t too fond of cutting coconuts.

Julia Roberts It’s only natural that the star of Mona Lisa Smile would want to protect her pearly whites! Oscarwinner Julia Roberts is one of the highestpaid actresses in the world, and she makes a pretty penny off her ability to light up a room. Fortunately, Roberts won’t be out of pocket if her dazzling smile ever does fade as she’s had her chompers insured for $30 million.

Tom Jones In 2008, Tom Jones added yet another accolade to his already impressive list of career recognitions. The Welsh-born singer can proudly claim to have the most expensive chest hair in the world! (Congratulations?) As bizarre as it sounds, Jones insured the mane of hair on his chest for $7 million, and although his manager claimed that Jones was “working far too hard in the recording studio” for something like that, Lloyd’s of London confirmed that the policy actually existed.

Fernando Alonso Sometimes an outrageous insurance policy is all part of a publicity stunt which was the case for Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso. Known for his victorious thumbs-up pose, Alonso had his thumbs insured for 10 million euros ($13.3 million) as part of an insurance campaign by Spanish-based bank Santander. The bank spoke of the deal saying Alonso’s thumbs are both essential to F1 driving and “a sign of victory and that everything is under control and wellprotected.”

Heidi Klum A two-million-dollar insurance policy for your legs may sound like a lot of money, but that’s pocket change for former Victoria’s Secret model and Project Runway host Heidi Klum. At almost 5’10”, Klum has strut the catwalk on numerous occasions, but each of her legs are actually insured at different amounts. Her left leg is only worth $1 million because of a tiny scar, whereas her right is worth $1.2 million.

Miley Cyrus Sticking out her tongue has become something of an iconic feature for Miley Cyrus which is why she had it insured for $1 million. The former Disney star began sticking out her tongue as a defense mechanism for when there was a lot of paparazzi around and she didn’t quite know what to do with her face. Cyrus spoke of the habit saying eventually “it became a rebellious, punk rock thing.” Perhaps deep down inside she’s just trying to channel the next celebrity on our list...

Gene Simmons When it comes to a conversation about famous tongues, we would be remiss not to talk about the one and only Gene Simmons. The legendary bassist and vocalist for Kiss has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and become famous for his iconic tongue which measures in at seven inches long. In fact, Kiss’ God of Thunder had such an impressive tongue that a

popular rumor in the seventies was that he had grafted a cow tongue onto his own to give him some extra length. Needless to say, Simmons decided to have his impressive licker insured for $1 million.

Mariah Carey In 2006, Gillette Razors brought Mariah Carey on as the face of their “Legs of a Goddess” campaign for its Venus razor blades. After landing the contract, Carey had her legs insured for a whopping $1 billion. Yes, you read that right. BILLION. Not Million. Billion, with a “B.” This means Carey’s legs are worth more than our next celebrity who actually uses his for a living.

David Beckham Top soccer players constantly face the risk of career-ending injuries when they’re out on the field, so it makes sense to insure their legs against any mishaps. Case in point, no one can bend it like David Beckham, and at the height of his success, Beckham had his legs insured for $70 million. Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo also makes his millions kicking a ball around, and his former team Real Madrid wanted to keep it that way when they insured his golden legs for more than twice as much at $144 million.

A two-million-dollar insurance policy for your legs may sound like a lot of money, but that’s pocket change for former Victoria’s Secret model and Project Runway host Heidi Klum.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

BILLIE EILISH WHERE DO WE GO? WORLD TOUR By Courtney Caggiano International singing icon Billie Eilish is bringing her Where Do We Go? World Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center on March 10. At the young age of 18, Eilish has championed top40 music with her own somber spin on the indie electronic sound, crafting tracks both melodious and mournful that coax her ethereal voice down a dark, winding road. With her 2019 debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, the California-born singer brought her gloomy alternative anthems to the forefront of pop radio and garnered millions of worldwide fans, marking the release the best-performing album of 2019. In January, Eilish and her album stunned at the 2020 Grammy Awards, winning five of the six awards for which she was nominated. With Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Record and Song of the Year for “Bad Guy,” Eilish is surprisingly just beginning. A Los Angeles native, Eilish was quite at home in an atmosphere of creativity, growing up in a family of musicians and actors, including her famous elder brother, Finneas O’Connell, who produced Eilish’s groundbreaking album in his small bedroom studio. After finding her soulful voice in the Los Angeles Children’s Choir at age eight, the melancholy songstress developed an unforgettable vocal style that would one day capture the attention of a listening world. Prior to creating the album that would lead to her Grammy sweep, Eilish was a simple teenager who had suddenly begun gaining a devoted fanbase with pensive, peculiar lyrics that spoke to the angsty,

the anxious, and the emotional, not running from pressing issues like mental health and heartbreak. Following the achievements of her more pop-driven “Six Feet Under” and “Fingers Crossed,” Eilish shared her airy single “Ocean Eyes,” showcasing her fascinating ability to procure beauty from despondency, as well as her capacity to speak to hearts everywhere—the song surpassed 14 million online streams. Today, Eilish owes her success to the ardent dedication of her fans, whose enthusiasm and affection led to her Where Do We Go? World Tour selling out within only days after tickets went on sale, with 500,000 tickets sold in North America, South America, and Europe within the first hour. The 2020 42-date tour is the artist’s most impressive and visionary tour she has headlined, as it comes on the heels of Eilish’s Grammy wins and the influence of her chart-topping single “Bad Guy.” Perhaps Eilish’s greatest strength is her capability to connect with a generation of music listeners searching for the authentic and sincere. With every song, every lyric, Eilish finds unique ways to relate to her fans, understanding how they are feeling and eager to show the universality of these feelings—no matter how morose they may sound when set to music. Billie Eilish’s Where Do We Go? World Tour is going to be one of the most highly anticipated tour stops at the Amway Center this year, as Eilish’s trendsetting and trailblazing career will surely set the soundtrack of the decade. You won’t want to miss this incredible music event.

PIONEERING SWIMWEAR It took many years, and confidently defiant women, to liberate female beachwear. By Khadejah Khan

As we move into warmer weather, our fashion choices become increasingly lighter and less-covered. The evolution of swimwear endured a similar transformation throughout the ages. This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating some of the women who pioneered different styles of swimwear, while taking a look back at the trends in history.

FASHION

Itsy-bitsy to Modesty. The first instance of a modern-day bikini, specifically the bandeau bikini, has been around well before it’s mainstream popularity, as far back as ancient times. In Roman and Greek bathhouses, birthday suits or a two-piece were often worn in women-only bathhouses. Fast forward to the 1700s when beach-going became a leisurely exercise, but getting some color on your skin was unwanted. Therefore, women would wear floor-length, long-sleeved, billowy “bathing gowns” with face-shading bonnets, shawls, and gloves. Women were known during this time to sew weights into the hem of their bathing gowns to prevent it from floating up in the water and showing their legs. Talk about extreme! Victorian Era. When taking a stroll on the boardwalk wasn’t enough, and women actually wanted to jump in the water and have fun, the invention of “bathing machines” was a lifesaver. They were ideal at a time when changing clothes in public was impossible. Basically a cabana on wheels, the bather entered the hut fully dressed and changed into her bathing suit inside. Then, these huts were drawn by horses into the water and would obstruct the view of women swimming from the shore, providing privacy before, during, and after their swim. Bloomin’ Bloomers. Bloomers still subscribed to the “rules” of swimsuits, covered and non-fitting. Except now, puffy, Turkish-style bloomers and dress-length tops were in. These were short-sleeved, knee-length, and often made of flannel to withstand rising up in the water. These eventually evolved into the classic sailor-inspired frills and trims. Lace-up beach and swim shoes were also introduced during this time. Turn of the Swim-tury. In 1907, Australian Annette Kellerman, the inventor of synchronized swimming, was arrested for “indecent exposure” in Boston for wearing a men’s swim suit with stockings underneath. The suit was form-fitting and short-sleeved, daring to show her arms. She argued in front of a judge that restrictive bathing suit laws prevented women from learning how to swim, and it was “like swimming in a ballgown.” She was dismissed of the charges, and the public started ditching their attitudes on the last of Victorian fashion in swimwear.

Gearing Up for Athletes. In 1916, just after the Swedes added swimming and diving events for women to their Olympic program, Jantzen was founded as a new brand of swimwear and changed the term from “bathing suit” to “swimming suit” to justify more revealing women’s suits as athletic as more women joined competitive swimming. Roaring Protests in the ‘20s. The Twenties was a time for rebellion and changing times, which some women saw as an opportunity for body autonomy. American athlete Ethelda Bleibtrey was arrested for “nudity” at Manhattan Beach when she removed her stockings before going swimming. Her arrest caused so much public outrage that her charges were dismissed, and thereafter, women could go swimming without having to wear stockings. Bleibtrey also championed swimming as a sport by getting arrested and spending a night in prison for diving into the Central Park Reservoir to advocate for a swimming pool in the park, and she went on to become a multiplewinning Olympic Gold Medalist in Women’s Swimming. The Bothersome “Swimsuit Police.” Although swimsuits ditched the stockings and sleeveless became the norm, measurement requirements were in effect in many states, like six-inches above the knee. During this decade, many women who didn’t meet the measurement requirements were arrested for refusing to cover up or leave the beach. They’d be hauled away, jailed, and fined. Out-swimming the Boys. In 1926, American Olympic Medalist Gertrude Ederlen became the first woman to swim the English Channel. She cut up her one-piece swimsuit into a two-piece, still before they became mainstream, and covered herself in grease to swim the 35 mile channel in a record-breaking 14 hours and 31 minutes, shattering the previous men’s time by two hours.

until 1946 when a French “lady of the night” was the only one bold enough to model the modern bikini. It was the first garment of its kind that risked going below the navel, and it left little to the imagination. Bikinis went mainstream in the ‘50s after French actress Brigitte Bardot was the first to wear one in a movie. Hollywood and Vogue popularized the idea of swimwear being fashionable, sexy, and glamorous, a trend that continues today. Style Over Literal Substance. With the invention of nylon in the ‘60s, swimwear became tighter and more practical for beach weather. Minds expanded and bikinis shrank in the ‘70s, flaunting more midriff than ever. The ‘80s brought wilder prints, brighter colors, higher leg-lines, and swimsuits plunged deeper in the front and revealed more in the back. Iconic styles emerged from TV stars Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra on Baywatch. The ‘90s brought more athletic designs from popular sports brands and the premier of tankinis. Mixing and matching tops, bottoms, and prints became popular. New Millennium, Who Dis? With changing attitudes, body ideals, acceptance, and positivity at the turn of a new century, swimwear has come to reflect the individual and represents all kinds of bodies. Cover-ups and shawls became fashionable and stylish, the burkini was introduced in 2005, and rashguards and surfwear is more widely available. We can still see the influence of swim trends throughout history in our modern swimwear, like cut-outs and sailor-frills. Most important, swimwear is available in all sizes! Whatever your swimwear fashion and level of comfortability, never forget that it is your right to choose what you want to wear to the beach, or any place for that matter. Remember and learn from the many women throughout time who paved the way for the choices that we have today. Happy Women’s History Month!

Birthing the Modern Bikini. In the decades after, as swimsuits became smaller, two-pieces popular, and swimming was widely enjoyed by many, the demand for them grew. Movies and films depicted more fashionable swimwear, like waist-high bottoms, halter tops, ruching, and sweetheart necklines. It wasn’t

Style with a simple tee and baseball cap for the perfect “tom-girl next-door” look. Alternatively, pair with flats and a button up blouse for a more preppy and done-up look. Puffy Sleeves Your childhood dreams of becoming a princess, come true. Your days of acceptably wearing a Cinderella gown out of the house are long over, but your elegant, princess-inspired style doesn’t have to be. Puffy sleeves are all the rage for tops and dresses. This look is ideal for a bold and feminine woman. Layering Dresses Over Tops The perfect look for transitioning your closet to the warmer season. This iconic style was seen over and over last fall, paired with a turtleneck and a

Dr. Marten Boots These boots are itching to make a statement, and boy, do they. Not only do they go with nearly every outfit no matter the season, but word on the street is they are the most comfortable shoes you will ever own. They also come in countless colors, patterns, and styles, so everyone can find a pair that works for them. Criss-Cross Buttoned Denim Jeans Have you ever had an old pair of jeans that was just a couple of sizes too big in the waist? Now you can salvage them with this hot trend! Instead of tossing your big old denim jeans, fold them tightly at the waist and create a new button hole where they fall on your side. If your not a DIY kind of gal, you can purchase them pre-made from retailers like AGOLDE. And yes, we do pay more to get them like that, grandma. Tassels Like the kind you wear at graduation, except now it’s not just for your head. The more fringe, the more fun. And that’s why we’re putting these things on everything - earrings, tops, jeans, and even bags. Tassels not only add movement, but they give a softness to your look that is perfect for the springtime.

LORI A. TILLEY, DVM Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida Dr. Lori Tilley graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2008 with a B.S. in Biology and received her D.V.M. in 2013 from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. After working in general medicine, she joined the team at the Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida. She has been with V.E.C. for over 6 years, and excels at diagnosing and treating critical and complicated medicine and surgery cases. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS). Teaching has always been an interest of Dr. Tilley. It is a value instilled by both of her parents who were educators. In turn, she enjoys educating future generations of veterinarians as well as the public about animal care. Dr. Tilley is a returning guest lecturer for the University of Central Florida’s Pre-Veterinary Society and has also mentored multiple Society students while introducing them to emergency medicine. In addition, she has taught veterinary students from various universities while they completed their externships. In 2018, she presented on the topic of emergency veterinary care for the National Association of Guide Dog Users. Dr. Tilley believes in taking the time to make sure clients fully understand their pet’s diagnosis and treatment. One of her core values is treating patients as if they were her own, and she makes her recommendations based on this value. She has a passion for helping animals in need, which stemmed from caring for a severely injured 3-day old puppy almost 11 years ago. This puppy became her much loved pet and was named Frankenstein due to his scars. She and

her husband, Robert, have rehabilitated and cared for over 40 injured and/or ill dogs, cats, and ferrets which were in situations (strays without an owner, shelter animals, etc.) that would have likely lead to death without proper medical care. These animals have since been treated and placed in loving homes. THE HOSPITAL Since 1975, the Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida has been providing quality emergency care for Central Florida’s pets. The company currently consists of five hospitals that are open nights, weekends, and holidays to care for patients when their regular veterinarians are closed, and there is always a doctor present when the hospital is open. The Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida stands for only the highest level of emergency medicine and ethics, and boasts Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society certification for the Casselberry and South Orlando hospitals. The purpose of this certification is to recognize emergency hospitals that meet and exceed the minimum standards and guidelines that are published by the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. Each hospital has in-house diagnostics and the ability to perform in-patient and out-patient treatments as well as numerous surgical procedures. All of the doctors are dedicated to timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment. The technical staff is superb and has been trained to triage patients, recognize true emergencies on presentation, and provide ordered treatments. The receptionists are friendly and welcoming and are always happy to answer any questions they can over the phone and provide directions to the closest location.

HOLISTIC VETERINARY CARE OF CFL Veterinarian

About Us: Holistic and Mobile Veterinary Care was created 11 years ago by practice owner Dr. Christie Cichra. She saw the need to offer an integrative approach to create a more comprehensive treatment plan for our beloved pets when Western Medicine alone falls short. After years of Dr. Cichra working solo, our practice has grown and given us the opportunity to hire an associate doctor, Dr. Alexandria Azcona-Velasquez. Dr. A has followed in Dr. Cichra’s footsteps and is also a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) Practitioner. Between our two doctors we have a beautiful clinic in Oviedo where we see the majority of our patients. We also offer house and farm call services to clients in the Central Florida Area in order to be more accommodating for our patient’s needs. Our staff is completed by Monica Good our Practice Manager, Savanna Simmons our Veterinary Technician and Hannah Mackenzie our Veterinary Assistant. What Makes Our Practice Special: At Holistic Veterinary Care you will learn all our names and faces and build relationships with each of our staff members. BANGZ PARK AVENUE SALON hospital. They wanted Vanessa to become a regular volunteer. She would be able to visit patients in the pediatric ward and provide similar services that she had at the event—facepainting, hair updos, and sometimes even trims. When she finally became certified to volunteer at the hospital, Vanessa realized that she felt a calling to her work. She loved volunteering with the children at the Disney Pavilion. Sometimes they wanted all sorts of face-paint, with wacky designs they could match with visiting siblings. Sometimes they were quiet, and wanted only the presence of having someone to watch a movie with. Volunteering became so much more than she had ever expected—soon nurses were requesting her to help with more difficult tasks, such as working with patients dealing with hair loss from chemotherapy. In all cases, Vanessa made connections with the patients, sometimes through laughter and sometimes through shared tears. The joy that Vanessa gave these patients was only matched by the joy they gave her. She had found her calling, and there was no going back.

When Vanessa Minter first moved to Orlando from Australia in 2006, she wanted to find a way to continue her community service activity in her new home. With her twenty years of experience in the hair industry, she wanted to use her knowledge and experience to give back to the community. As a newcomer to town, she focused initially on local theater productions, where she used her expertise to design and style wigs backstage in costume and make-up management. One day Vanessa Minter received a phone call from one of her dearest friends. There had been a certain gleeful certainty to her friend’s voice when she informed Vanessa about a potential volunteering opportunity at the Disney Pavilion at the Florida Hospital. There was an upcoming event in which pediatric patients would receive mini-makeovers. They had quite a few volunteers, but wanted a licensed hairdresser so that they could provide additional professional services. Raised with strong convictions about service to community, Vanessa quickly agreed, and attended the event. She had no idea the door that she had just opened. Soon after the event, Vanessa received another phone call from a child life specialist at the

Some years later, Vanessa became the owner of a fabulous hair salon in Winter Park called Bangz Park Avenue Salon. She soon set about transforming the salon into a warm and inviting place where everyone would be welcomed and provided with excellent service. She partnered with Aveda to ensure that all products were virtually 100% organic and never tested on animals. She enjoys mentoring the staff in providing quality services while also forming personal connections with each guest. Vanessa realized that Bangz Park Avenue Salon also provided the perfect platform to extend her volunteer work to the broader community. Through the salon, Vanessa and her team could bring the same joy and comfort to people referred to them by the Cancer Society and guests of the salon. People from all walks of life, many of whom are fighting the most serious of illnesses, found their way to Vanessa at Bangz Park Avenue Salon. Here, Vanessa worked diligently styling wigs, transitioning hair styles to reduce the trauma of hair loss, providing rejuvenating Aveda treatments, and most importantly, always with a friendly smile and a sense of normalcy into what can otherwise be a most difficult time for people. She does this as she has with all her other community work— out of a sense of service, refusing any payment. More recently, Vanessa began to realize a vision that would fuse Bangz Park Avenue Salon with her community service work: a foundation that would direct and support her efforts. A choice of name eluded her for a time. Vanessa had wanted to associate it with her late cousin, Karen Celeste Minter, a victim of cancer, who had been a role model for her. After recently suffering the loss of her family dog, she began

to reflect on the meaning of his name. She discovered that his name, “Luke”, means “giving light.” Then late one night, the name Vanessa would give her new foundation came to her. The very next day, work begun on formally setting up and registering it as a not-forprofit corporation. The Celeste Giving Light Foundation was born. The foundation’s mission is to deliver complementary services for those undergoing treatment for chronic illness. The foundation provides a multitude of services for these guests. Guests can receive moments of wellness, which are stress-relieving treatments. Vanessa works with guests from the beginning of their journey and continues to support them throughout the duration of their treatment. The Cancer Society will often refer guests to Vanessa for help with personalizing their wigs and making them their own. Often this can include trimming, coloring, and styling. Guests can also receive scalp treatments, as well as detailed education on how to take care of one’s skin outside the salon. Vanessa hopes that the organization will grow into something integral to the community of Orlando and potentially all of Florida. She hopes to start a chain reaction with other salons and plans to host community days in which she can provide education to licensed stylists on the work she does in the foundation. Vanessa sees the Celeste Giving Light Foundation as an outlet for compassion and a fostering of connection through community. She wants to not only help patients but establish personal connections as well. In one instance, Vanessa recalls the experience of one guest, whose diagnosis left her feeling afraid and uncertain. Since she had not yet revealed her diagnosis publicly, she had been afraid that her wigs would not look natural and her coworkers would notice. Vanessa assured her that they could fix the wigs together, and by their next appointment, she had styled them just as her guest wished. One of the ways she coped was by naming each of the wigs Vanessa styled for her. Through the last year, the two bonded, and both were extremely excited when Vanessa was able to cut and color her guest’s real hair in their most recent appointment. Whenever Vanessa sees a new guest for her foundation, she tells them about the naming of the wigs, and she hopes it will help them too. Meeting each of the guests inspires Vanessa—it makes her thankful for every sunset, every good cup of coffee, and even her drive home from work. It makes her excited to see the progress of her guests, to help them laugh, to sometimes help them cry, to help them feel that for a moment they can release themselves. In the future, Vanessa hopes to accomplish just what her foundation has been named for—she wants to give light, to feel the light from others, and to help that light grow in the community.

EDUCATION FOR A LIFETIME The most meaningful, rich, and rewarding career one could have. On Memorial Day of 1993 my wife and I met a few other close friends for dinner and discussion about the state of education in America. As the conversation continued late into the night, we discussed a form of education that had been the foundation of Western education, including the leading universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Called the Christian classical Liberal Arts, a revitalized model of this was just beginning to take root again among educators. Sometime after midnight that evening,The Geneva School was born. Geneva opened in August of that same year, and I was privileged to volunteer as Chairman of the Board of Governors for 8 of its first 10 years. In 2003 I became Headmaster and for the past 17 years it has been my pleasure to serve the students, staff, and families of a mission driven school whose vision has inspired many similar schools to flourish across the nation. Geneva’s vision has been and remains to build an enduring educational institution committed to developing young men and women who love beauty, think deeply, and pursue Christ’s calling. I am profoundly grateful to God for fulfilling many of our original hopes and dreams. This May we will graduate our 20th senior class-the first class to graduate from our beautiful new upper school facility. Situated on our 45 acre campus and state of the art athletic complex, Geneva has become an anchoring institution in our community. I find it a rewarding endeavor to recover that which has been lost. At Geneva we seek to recover the lost art of teaching and the lost tools of learning, instilling again in our students a sense of wonderment of God and the beauty of His creation. We believe that education is in part preservation--”the breathing of the soul of one generation into the soul of the next.” This enculturation safeguards the ideals and faith of preceding generations as it forms young people who are prepared to make a difference in their chosen field. But education is also transformation--we marvel at the changed lives, maturity of thought, and depth of relationships that characterize our students. Realized goals such as these animate us as faculty and staff to serve our students as faithfully as possible.

Rev. Robert F. Ingram Headmaster

I tell my students every year that if they want to have one of the most meaningful, rich, and rewarding careers that they should consider becoming the Headmaster of Geneva. To do so would call forth their very best efforts in the pursuit of excellence; it would soften their heart to the needs and dreams of others; it would surround them in a community of families that are intent upon loving their children well; and it would immerse them in a faculty of friends in pursuit of wisdom and truth. It is a high calling to give honor to whom honor is due, and it is an unspeakable privilege to dignify students as they mature into responsible adults. How well I know that all education is formative, both in the lives of students and in Headmasters as well.

DR. NEIL PARIKH, MD Board Certified Allergist at Mid-Florida Dermatology & Allergy We’re incredibly excited to introduce Dr. Neil Parikh, a leading allergist & immunologist, to the team at Mid Florida Dermatology & Allergy. Dr. Parikh brings a long history of expertise in internal medicine, allergy and immunology, even having contributed to award-winning research in the field. The value of having an accomplished allergist available to our team and our patients is immeasurable. Especially as the popularity of cosmetic skin care products continues to increase, we’ve seen a rise in undiagnosed allergies causing sensitive or irritated skin. Dr. Parikh helps combat these issues by testing for sensitivities to the individual ingredients found in each patient’s daily products and routine. In fact, Mid Florida Dermatology & Allergy offers testing for more allergens than any other group in Central Florida. Dr. Parikh is also highly accomplished in the field of pediatrics, and has seen immense success in helping parents identify and treat their children’s allergies. Even more specialized than care provided to children from a general pediatrician, Dr. Parikh can help pinpoint the often obscure sensitivities that result from dermatitis, asthma, food allergies, dust or mold, pet allergies and beyond. Identifying the allergens that affect you is the most important step in creating true health. From acute conditions to routine allergy shots, new diagnoses to known allergies, Dr. Parikh provides an intuitive understanding of the field.
