PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers & our Advertisers, who are a big part of our Orlando Style Family, While many publications move across to digital and we certainly provide these options as well, luxury lifestyle publications like Orlando Style are still offering an inimitable sensory experience to their readers, where magazines remain luxurious objects in their own right. Sophisticated art direction, amazing editorials and premium print execution, which, perfectly fits the lifestyle of their readers and provides luxury brands a unique opportunity to present their products. Whilst social marketing and digital communications have become a part of luxury branding, luxury lifestyle magazines are an important and large part of the marketing mix, particularly in reaching the elusive high-net-worth consumer. This is an unusual and unknown time in all of our lives and we shall learn from it and adapt to a new way of thinking from what we thought was the “norm”. There will be a new normal as we get through this unprecedented times and hopefully, promising news, that there will be a vaccine coming, maybe not as quickly as we would like to see it, but maybe sooner than what we’ve expected. That will be the time we all shall move forward with more appreciation of what we have, and, anticipation to where we’re going. This is a wonderful place in which we live, our City Beautiful, we shall take care of it and our people. WAYS TO INCREASE OPTIMISM & REDUCE ANXIETY EVERY DAY

STYLE MD

By Kenny Tello, LCSW, CAP, CCTP, CCISM Manager of Physician Wellness and Resilience, Orlando Health

Anxiety is increasing due to overexposure to news and social media. This causes people to assume that only bad events are taking place in the world. At the same time, we are constantly looking at our friends’ amazing experiences. This creates a sense that bad news is happening all of the time while only good is happening to those we know. Except life doesn’t look quite like that. It is helpful to remember we simply have greater access to bad news. Changing the Story Here are five strategies to help counteract the effects of negative experiences, whether they are happening to you or someone else:

1. Change the story. When we worry, we are overwhelmed, often coming up with a story not based on true events, telling ourselves it’s not going to work out or coming up with the worst-case scenario. By focusing on a specific story, our other thoughts follow suit and allow for it to feel like the truth. It’s up to us to flip the script. Choose a more realistic story instead. Rehearse it. Share it. Make it visible. Remind yourself of it always. 2. Find the other track in tough situations. People often think of life in terms of seasons. We assume good and bad scenarios cannot happen at the same time. When we deal with losses or difficult situations, we are waiting for the season to be over. Look at life as two sets of train tracks instead, the good and the bad running side by side. Sometimes when great events are happening to us, something else comes along and messes it up. This also can happen when we’re struggling. Look toward the other track — the good one — and you’re likely to find a reason to be thankful in the midst of all else. 3. Establish a support system. Albert Einstein said, “Problems cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them.” Find someone to speak to regularly who gives you encouragement. Having that presence can be extremely helpful.

We can often have a sense that we’re going through everything by ourselves. In reality, there are many who have gone through similar situations. They can be an invaluable support. Reach out to them.

to look at your situation in a new way. It does take work, but optimism is an attitude. When you truly work at it, optimism can be the anchor to hold you down during your storms, one that doesn’t allow you to drift.

4. Do for others. Find ways to give back. We get so caught up in our worries that we become self-centered. But you find more optimism in collaboration than you do in isolation. When you serve others, you get a lot more out of it. There are so many ways to give and volunteer throughout the year. There is value in serving others.

Increase the Good Remember, we are wired to feel anxious. It is a survival mechanism that pushes us to take action. We just need to know how to manage it. It’s like having a pit bull as a pet. It can be a friendly dog to have, but if you let the dog control you, it can be dangerous. Tame it and it will protect you.

5. Rely on your spiritual resources. Understand that difficulties do not happen to you, they happen for you. There is a higher purpose and meaning in our struggles. When we seek ways to find it, life can appear differently to us. Joy and peace can be experienced regardless of current circumstances.

Please reach out to others for help and support when you need it. Anxiety often tells you that no one cares, that no one will understand and that your problems will only get worse. That’s a lie. You have a two-track life, and it is worth living it with joy!

Free Your Mind When we are inwardly focused by our own anxiety, we don’t have room to enjoy our lives. By working on increasing optimism, we free our minds to take care of more. It even allows our brains and immune systems to function better. This doesn’t mean pretending that everything in your life is great. It means you are choosing

CORONAVIRUS AND YOUR RETIREMENT SAVINGS. By Nancy Hecht CFP, AIF First, let me say that my heart goes out to all who have suffered from this virus. The world is in a panic right now, but I don’t want you to panic about your retirement savings. Often, when negative global events occur, we panic; it is human nature. When these events occur, there can also be opportunity. If you regularly review your retirement holdings, and are happy with the quality of your funds, now is the time to add to your accounts. I have mentioned many times that we seem to like to buy anything on sale except investments. Buy on the dips, be contrary to the pack, and remember you are investing for the long term.

STYLE MD

There are a lot of things people may want during this crazy time—more space, professional sports to resume, toilet paper. But mostly, it seems, we just want hope. And like running out of toilet paper, when we run out of hope, we look for it wherever we can—among friends or perhaps online. We turn to whoever might be promising us just a little of it. Right now, hope comes in the form of information. Anyone who might have a suggestion for how we might prevent or perhaps treat the novel coronavirus gives us hope. Doctors are uncertain. We haven’t seen this virus before. We don’t know much about it, and beyond social distancing (which we are becoming very tired of and which is causing a lot of financial pain), we don’t know how to stop it. And let’s face it, uncertainty sucks. It leaves a hole in our hearts where we need hope to be. Enter bad information. While doctors and scientists try to sort out the facts around the coronavirus, television personalities, social media influencers, and politicians are peddling hope in the form of whatever nostrum seems most promising that day. Perhaps some of these treatments will prove beneficial. Perhaps some will prove harmful. Most will probably do nothing. We just don’t know yet. In normal times, promoting bad information might result in a few people doing something potentially harmful, but it is mostly a victimless crime. Today, when we throw panic and a feeling of powerlessness into the mix, relying on anything that might work can be deadly (see: the couple that took aquarium cleaner to try to prevent coronavirus). So, how do we know if something really works? In medicine, you have to prove that the

treatment you are proposing works in people without significant side effects. The challenge is that a lot of the time, people will get better without you doing anything. To tell if something works, you have to give the treatment to a group of people who are essentially the same—same age, same level of health to start with, same level of illness—as another group of people. The other group gets a placebo treatment. The groups have to be large enough to account for the fact that people really aren’t exactly the same and small differences in small groups can have a big effect on the results. The problem we are having today is that no one wants to volunteer to possibly get a placebo (and no doctor really wants to give one to a sick patient) and organizing a larger study takes time. So, we are relying on observing small groups of people getting medicines that may or may not be making them better. This is shaky evidence at best. Worse, other studies being promoted on social media have only looked at cells in petri dishes or at lab mice—this actually only hints at what might happen in humans. Pinning great hope to any of these may lead us in very wrong directions. And, as they say, nobody’s got time for that.

Who can we trust? Unfortunately, in today’s social media age, responsible messaging often doesn’t get reported and retweeted. So, anyone who wants to make a name for themselves tries to make it sound like the next cure is around the corner. And they, of course, have it. Sadly, a few of those personalities are doctors (or were at some point in their lives). They engender trust and seem to know what they are talking about. And yet, something is off. Anyone claiming to know exactly how to beat coronavirus, a problem

stumping some of our greatest minds, is promoting themselves far more than any reliable treatment. Salespeople are sure of themselves; scientists are skeptics. What can I do in the meantime? The good news is, the world is working around the clock to figure out how to treat the novel coronavirus. Doctors and scientists are also using social media to share good information and collaborate on cures. More reliable studies are coming to tell us which treatments may really help. That’s why not catching or spreading coronavirus right now is so important. If we do what we can to limit the spread of the disease, if we look to ourselves for hope in our ability to persevere, we give the scientists the time they need to figure this thing out. I’m so hopeful that real science will work that I’m counting on a vaccine or treatment to come out before I’m convinced I will have a reliable supply of TP.

CELEBRITY SOUP

CELEBRITIES WITH FAMOUS RELATIVES & ANCESTORS You won’t believe the bizarre ways these famous figures are connected! Have you ever wondered if you were a descendant of someone famous? For some people, being related to a famous figure is their one and only claim to fame. However, there are a handful of lucky celebrities who get to enjoy fame in their own right AND in their birthright. Consider the following for example: Did you know Ellen DeGeneres, Michael Douglas, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Hilary Duff are all related to King Edward III? The Gyllenhaals are connected to the King on their father’s side, which makes them distant cousins. Douglas is 19th cousins with Queen Elizabeth, while Duff is 18th cousins with her royal highness. As for DeGeneres, she is a 19th cousin of Edward III and a 14th cousin of Kate Middleton, twice removed (practically twins!). Keep on reading for even more famous and historical figures who are all connected in surprising ways.

Through Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks, the Forrest Gump star is Honest Abe’s third cousin, four times removed. He is also distantly related to another former president, Herbert Hoover, as well as King John of England. As if that wasn’t cool enough, George Clooney is Abraham Lincoln’s half-first cousin, five times removed, which means that Clooney is also a distant relative to Tom Hanks. Is it just me or is it starting to seem like all of Hollywood is related?

JOHNNY DEPP One of the most versatile actors in Hollywood is Johnny Depp, and a genealogist has found out that Depp is a 20th cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. Depp actually shared a great-grandfather with the queen that goes back 19 generations. To put this in perspective, that’s approximately 500 years! Too bad Jack Sparrow didn’t know he was a descendant of royal blood when he was pilfering the Caribbean. That might’ve saved him a lot of lost battles.

SARAH PALIN According to genealogists, the one-time vice presidential candidate who could see Russia from her house is ninth cousins once removed with late U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and distantly related to the beloved Princess Diana of Wales. Sarah Palin and the late Princess Di are 10th cousins descended from John Strong and his wife Abigail Ford who lived in the 1600s. Interestingly, George and Jeb Bush are also related to the People’s Princess as 11th cousins, twice removed.

ROBERT PATTINSON BEN AFFLECK Oscar-winning actor Ben Affleck is related to a whopping 16 presidents and is an 11th cousin of Barack Obama. As if it wasn’t enough to be related to famous people that you don’t know, Affleck is also related to his long time buddy Matt Damon via a bricklayer from the 17th century named William Knowlton Jr. who is also Affleck’s link to Obama. Their common ancestor makes Affleck and Damon 10th cousins once removed!

BRAD PITT Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt is also a distant relative to Barack Obama. The duo share their ancestry through a man named Edwin Hickman who was born in 1690. In addition to having a presidential connection, Pitt also has a royal ancestor in Henry II, who is his 25th cousin, twice removed. Believe it or not, the same common ancestor connects Pitt to hotel heiress and reality star Paris Hilton.

22

| STYLETOME.COM

BARACK OBAMA As previously mentioned, Barack Obama is not only related to some of the biggest actors in Hollywood… he can also boast relation to not one, not two, but SIX other former presidents including both Bush Sr. and Jr., Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry Truman and James Madison. But wait—there’s more! Obama is also a descendent of King Edward I and a ninth cousin of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill through a mutual ancestor by marriage. I guess you could say being a politician was in his blood!

TOM HANKS One of the most well known historical connections to a modern celebrity is Hollywood golden boy Tom Hanks and former President Abraham Lincoln. Unlike some on our list who are a gazillion times removed (give or take a few generations), Tom Hanks is actually a pretty close relative of the former President.

In what may be the most ironic relation on our list, Robert Pattison is actually a distant relative of Vlad the Impaler. Pattison is famous for playing brooding vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga films, and Vlad the Impaler was the inspiration behind the most popular vampire in the world, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Clearly, Pattinson was destined for his role, as it’s literally written in his genealogy. I just wonder how many generations it took for Dracula’s descendants to begin glittering in the sunlight...

CLINT EASTWOOD Western movie icon Cllint Eastwood is a 10th great-grandson of William Bradford who arrived to America on the Mayflower and became Governor of Plymouth Colony. Through his relation to Bradford, Eastwood is also a descendant of Henry I and shares a lineage with President Franklin Pierce, First Lady Nancy Reagan, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and actress Sigourney Weaver, just to name a few! Similar to Palin, Eastwood also has kinship to the current royal family through a connection with the late Princess Diana.

QUARANTINE SESSIONS

Stream At-Home Concerts This Festival Season By Courtney Caggiano

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

After months of staying indoors, quarantine life can get even the best of us feeling anxious for a night out—especially a night spent catching the latest concerts at our amazing local venues. While we may not have the luxury of watching our favorite artists in sold-out arenas, 2020 is still full of exciting ways to experience some of today’s hottest musical acts live—right from your home. Just like us, the biggest stars in the music world have been social distancing, and with live virtual performances, they are streaming concerts through social media and other online sources to make us feel more connected in this world of self-isolation. Since festival season has been affected by the quarantine, you might be going through live-music withdrawals, so grab your flower crowns, dim the lights, and stream these at-home concerts!

Chris Martin

Niall Horan

Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin hit “record” on a groundbreaking acoustic performance after jumpstarting the online concert trend. The artist spearheaded a virtual concert series called “Together At Home,” encouraging people all over the world to remain in their homes while proving that music truly can make you feel less alone. With Coldplay wonders like “Yellow” and “Viva La Vida,” Martin brought a vibrant, ethereal sound that offered Coldplay fans a unique spin on the band’s classics.

As fun as always, Niall Horan was all smiles as he recorded his Instagram Live performance. Wearing a comfy yet always trendy outfit of a Looney Tunes t-shirt and black-andwhite striped pants, Horan sang a 35-minute compilation of songs, including those from his latest album, Heartbreak Weather. This pleasant acoustic performance gave fans an intimate house show with one of the biggest pop acts of the year.

During the quarantine, the cute couple of Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes decided to make social distancing a little less boring with a private concert, showcasing a collection of songs from both of the stars’ albums. After blending their voices with a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Kiss Me,” the singers shared some of their own hits. Mendes treated fans to singles like “Lost in Japan,” while Camila performed Latin-inspired tunes like “Havana.”

Australian country singer Keith Urban brought a magical experience to social media with his “InstaBand” concert videos. From his home studio, Urban performed hits like “Somebody Like You,” “God Whispered Your Name,” and “Somewhere in My Car,” with wife Nicole Kidman dancing along in the background in this two-part video concert series.

John Legend jumped on the at-home concert trend early, airing his #TogetherAtHome live video on Instagram from his personal piano. Legend shared homestyle renditions of some of his chart-topping singles, including “All of Me” and “Tale as Old as Time” from Beauty and the Beast. Looking extra-cozy in a robe with wife Chrissy Teigen, donning a towel, sitting by his side, Legend made us all feel a little grateful for time spent inside with family.

If you missed any of these at-home concerts, you can access them all on the artists’ Instagram pages or YouTube. Bring the festival season home this year and brighten your quarantined days with the sound of music.

REISS TAYLOR A perfect blazer that goes well with any work or chill outfit. Great for all seasons. $200 / Nordstromrack.com

TAKING BUSINESS OUT OF THE OFFICE Blazers are not just for the workplace. The biggest trend right now on the streets is blazers. I know, who would have thought? But blazers are everywhere, being worn to occasions other than the office! And we understand why.

CHANEL SNEAKER Not your average sneaker. Walk in style with these Chanel sneakers. $950 / Chanel.com

Blazers are that piece of clothing that everyone, I mean everyone, will look good in. It will instantly make whatever you are wearing look better. You could be wearing pajamas and still look good. (I’ve seen people wear them over their gym outfits! And its cute!) It’s thick enough to keep you warm in the fall, but light enough to not make you feel hot. And because it can easily be paired with almost anything, it’s so easy now to look “put together” even though you’re just wearing a white tank top tucked in some jeans. There is a blazer for everyone, so do not be

intimidated by their striking nature. There are so many kinds of styles, so many different colors, patterns, and fits to a blazer. You can rock a baggy, effortless look with an oversized blazer, or a more sophisticated look with a form-fitting blazer. No matter the occasion, you can find a blazer that will work! Another awesome thing is that because of the high demand for blazers, you can find them anywhere. And for an affordable price too (it is absolutely ok to have four or more blazers in your closet). Who doesn’t love a look that looks more expensive than what it really is?! So ladies and gents, this spring (and fall), the blazer will be your best friend and new staple in your wardrobe. From work to brunch, you will get way more uses out of them than you think.

Simple Changes To Modernize The Look Of Your Space By Shelby Newman

The time to bring some much needed life back into your spaces is long overdue. Whether it’s in an office, a kitchen, a bedroom, or even a bathroom, every space could benefit from a little upgrade. And what better time to do it than now? When you’re indoors anyway. Modern interior decoration is in high demand, but it isn’t as hard as you think to achieve sleek and contemporary style. Skip the interior designer, and use these simple ideas to update the look of your space!

28

| STYLETOME.COM

Optimize Surface Area First thing’s first when adding a little spice into your space. And that’s the layout of the room. One of the most important components of a contemporary look is a spacious layout. Arrange the furniture and other large pieces in a way that gives the space the most open floor plan. That means, it might be time to re-purpose that bulky old recliner you’ve had for centuries. Minimalism is key, so don’t keep more than what’s necessary. If your space is small, try incorporating mirrors to give the illusion of a larger area. Hanging mirrors, full length mirrors, and even mirrored furniture is a perfect way to reflect light and make small spaces appear open and roomy.

“Modern interior decoration is in high demand, but it isn’t as hard as you think...”

Minimize Clutter Modern homes are styled to be simple and functional. Deep clean your space and reorganize clutter so that everything has a place. And no, that chair you throw all of your garbage, clothing, and other miscellaneous items on does not count as a proper ‘place’. Try integrating visible storage into your space, like jars for food items or woven baskets for books, blankets, or even dog toys. Floating shelves are also a great way to enhance the look of your space while increasing the amount of visible storage. Throw a couple of succulents on them, and you’ve got yourself a home out of a magazine! Increase Lighting Proper lighting can change the dynamic of a room. Consider making your space shine a little brighter by switching out old light fixtures for new ones. Stay clear of bulky lamps or chandeliers with bold patterns. Instead, opt for sleek and simple fixtures that expose the bulb. Geometric lines and shapes like squares, rectangles, and triangles scream modern. Finding fixtures that include these basic shapes are a major plus. A well lit room is also more warm and inviting overall and can help you get up and motivated to complete your daily tasks everyday. Replace Outdated Items It might not be practical to buy brand new furniture every time you revamp your space, but it is easy to switch out throw-blankets, pillows, and other minimal decor. Replace outdated couch pillows and blankets with new ones that follow a basic color scheme. You can even purchase throw pillow covers for the ones you already have, and change them whenever you please! Keep it classic and high in contrast with black and white, adding in small pops of a punchy accent color like yellow or red. The same rules apply for paint. Tear down grandma’s vintage wallpaper, because a fresh coat can go a long way. It’s important to stick with neutrals and avoid busy patterns in order to maintain a sleek style. Additionally, window curtains, handles, and doorknobs are essential parts of every space that are often overlooked. Replacing cabinet handles and door knobs from round to linear shapes is one of the easiest ways to update your space. It’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

Louis Vuitton Ventures Into Cuisine Louis Vuitton opens their first restaurant in Osaka, Japan By Khadejah Khan

| STYLETOME.COM

LUXURY

Iconic French fashion house Louis Vuitton has opened its first restaurant and café inside its new store in Osaka, Japan, with retro interiors designed by the brand’s in-house design team. Situated on the fourth (and top) floor of the store, both eateries are headed by acclaimed Japanese chef Yosuke Suga, who studied under French culinary legend Joël Robuchon as his protégé. Chef Suga combines French and Japanese flavors and techniques to showcase inventive Haute cuisine and exquisitely curated menus. Appetizers include Quiche Lorraine and a cup of consommé. Salads, sandwiches (like a Croque Monsieur with Raclette and Abondance cheeses), and various Wagyu beef dishes, plus Crab Macaroni and Cheese highlight the entrée section. Dessert options include an Opéra cake and millefeuille with vanilla flown in from Madagascar. Guests can enjoy an array of coffees and an even wider selection of teas. Mocktails, wines, beers, champagnes, and non-alcohol spirits are available, as well as a surprising amount of options for mineral, still, and sparkling water. The restaurant, Sugalabo V, takes the namesake of Chef Suga’s critically-acclaimed and exclusive restaurant in Tokyo. Mimicking that exclusivity, Sugalabo V seats a select number of guests each evening by invitation only, so securing a reservation won’t be easy— the booking process and the entrance are kept secret. Accessible via a hidden speakeasy door, the restaurant oozes LV’s signature chocolate-brown color palette, from fixtures to wood paneling, mood lighting, and brass-accented furniture. Guests can eat formally in offset dining spaces or around a high-counter that overlooks the open kitchen. Mustard leather seats line the counter, while the floor is clad in monochromatic rhombus-shaped tiles.

While the restaurant may be tough to get into, the new Le Café V is available to shoppers for upscale fare and drinks. Completed in a lighter color and material scheme, the café features creamy terrazzo flooring, huge yellow sofas, and iridescent discs hung from the ceiling that reflects the sunlight from large floor-to-ceiling windows. Oval accents decorate the room, like a huge brass bar with recessed shelves, carved ceilings, and curved seating arrangements in the aptly-named Cocoon Room. The glass windows and doors of the café morph to welcome an outdoor terrace that’s peppered with aqua-blue and lime-green Italian furnishings, making it a perfect pit-stop to relax mid-shopping. Here, guests can marvel up close at the façade of the store building, harmoniously uniting the exterior and interior spaces. The interior in both eateries and spaces throughout the store also have nautical detailing, a nod to the building’s overall architecture. Japanese firm Jun Aoki & Associates, who have already designed many of Louis Vuitton’s stores in Japan, China, and New York, draw inspiration from the City of Water (as Osaka is known) to fuel the design of the French fashion house’s latest store. Emulating ship sails, the building is shrouded in 10 curved double-glazed glass, applied with ceramic frit on the surface to create the cloth-like appearance of billowing sails. Sugalabo V and Le Café V opened February 15, following the opening of Louis Vuitton’s new Osaka boutique on February 1.

LIVING FASHION ‘N STYLE

The Bedroom It’s important to keep the bedroom organized because as the heart of the home, its tidiness often reflects on your life and routine. Lack of order in the space where you rest often leads to a life that is chaotic and disorderly, while great organization leads to a life of stability and serenity.

and the wheels, giving them the ability to hold many items as well as move from space to space. Try placing a cosmetic organizer into a rolling cart for maximum efficiency. Arrange cosmetics like makeup, hair products, and lotions inside to free up space on the countertop of your sink.

Get a calendar

We all know the feeling of searching for our favorite shampoo in a sudsy sea of half empty products. Instead of letting countless tubes of body wash swallow the shower walls, get rid of the products you don’t need and invest in shower shelves to organize what’s left. And there’s no need for burdensome installation. Many are sold ready to attach to the showerhead and enjoy!

Start by purchasing a calendar to keep track of events and responsibilities. But not just any calendar, one that serves as a room decoration. Look for ones that are reusable, like dry-erase, and made of glass, or even framed to give an upscale look to a traditional calendar. Some are even customizable, with endless creative potential to add your own name or favorite colors. This will give you the peace of mind that you’re never forgetting anything important. And you’re doing it with style.

Sort your clothes

If you haven’t worn it since last spring, it’s probably time to let it go. Donating clothes is a great way to clear out space in the closet, while also giving back to the community. While you’re rummaging through clothes, choose some of your best pieces to highlight on a clothing rack. Not only does a rack tastefully show off a few of your killer pieces, it makes them more easily accessible, while also making the closet a little less crowded.

Utilize visible storage

Make countertop clutter disappear and floor piles be gone. Utilize the open space under the bed to store items that you don’t use daily, like boxes of seasonal clothes. You might even want to consider investing in a footboard, or a bench for the foot of the bed, that includes built in shelves or drawers. They are ideal for holding collections of books, blankets, or anything in need of a designated storage space. Be creative in how you reduce countertop clutter. Organize small accessories like hats and jewelry by hanging them on stylish hooks or pins in the wall. Make a decorative hanging arrangement out of your fedora collection and you’ll kill two birds with one stone. The Bathroom It’s no secret that the bathroom can get a little messy. Towels on the floor, beard clippings in the sink, and more than likely, makeup scattered explosively over the countertop. It’s also not a secret that the place where you go to clean up should be tidy and hygienic.

Storage baskets & jars

Storage is the timeless key to flawless organization. Utilize wicker baskets to store clean, folded towels and washcloths. In fact, instead of tossing a handful of toilet paper on the floor next to the toilet every now and then, try keeping rolls neatly in their own basket and tuck it away under the sink. It’s also a good idea to designate one basket for dirty laundry and another for garbage. This way, when you’re rushing to prepare for a hot date night, your dirty clothes and beard clippings won’t be the messy aftermath. You can also use glass jars to store cosmetic items like q-tips and cotton balls for both accessibility and style.

Rolling carts

Shower shelves

The Kitchen If you’re an expert chef, or even if you’re not, it’s likely that you spend ample time in the kitchen serving up snacks. Make mealtime a little bit easier by getting your kitchen together with these tips and tricks.

Weekly grocery & chore chart

Having the grocery list in one place can make it simple for everyone to add things they need throughout the week. Keeping a list posted on the fridge is also a foolproof way to ensure that it won’t get lost or damaged. Same goes for a weekly chore chart. Rather than yelling at Timmy to do the dishes every week, keep a chart on the fridge or somewhere in the kitchen where it is visible to the whole family. This way, you’re keeping everyone in the household accountable for the chores they’re responsible for, while giving yourself a break from trying to remember whose turn it is to mop the floor.

Visible storage for bulk items

Scouring the pantry for a new bag of rice every time you run out can get old fast when it’s something you make often. Luckily, there’s an easy fix! Combine and display bulk items in glass jars and containers and show them off as counter decor. You can even use this method to tame a busy pantry. It works best for everything from coffee beans to sugar or even for your morning cereal. Add an extra touch of charm to the jars by labeling them with what’s inside, and changing them as necessary.

Hang the necessities

Nothing is worse than searching the entire kitchen for your favorite spatula as your dinner burns on the stove. Try hanging kitchen essentials like your best pans, whisks, and knives where you need them the most, rather than tossing them in a cabinet. Because the apron and oven mitts are much more helpful when they’re within arms reach of the cook! This is also a useful way to increase open space in cabinets, minimizing clutter and creating a more organized area.

“There are a lot of creative ways to get in the spring cleaning spirit without breaking the bank, or your back.”

Ladies, it’s time to clear off some counter space and put that lipstick in its place. Rolling carts offer great versatility because of the shelves

A new type of elegance. Rocking one shade of color. THE ROAD TO THE PERFECT SMILE Teeth Whitening: Everything you need to know. We all strive for perfection nowadays, especially with the pressure of social media (cough, cough, Instagram), and having the perfect smile is probably one of the things everyone wishes they could have if they could. Well, we have good news. With the demand increasing over the years for whiter teeth (and straightening), technology has made it super easy and accessible to have whiter teeth. From quick fixes to long term results, you can even get whiter teeth from the comfort of your very own bathroom, or wherever! There are many different options to get those pearly whites even whiter. Here are some options! Teeth Whitening Strips: Probably the easiest and cheapest option. You can buy teeth whitening strips almost anywhere, any pharmacy or supermarket. There are many different brands that make them; you can choose whichever you like; however, this option is more for quick fixes, so if you’re looking for more permanent results, this isn’t the option for you.

Charcoal Powder: This is a more gentle, natural approach to teeth whitening, at least compared to bleaching your teeth. Charcoal powder gives your teeth a deep clean, without damaging your enamel and removing any stains over time. It can get a little messy, and don’t be scared of seeing black teeth in the mirror. As good of an option as this is, it’s still not a permanent, long-term option, but great for maintaining already white teeth. Professional Bleaching Teeth Whitening: If your looking for a more dramatic before and after, this is it, but it requires a seat in the dentist chair. You’ll need to sit with your dentist for a general overlook of your teeth, and to go over any concerns you might have regarding the process. The results can last up to 24 months if you keep away the foods/drinks that are white teeth’s worst enemy. This is by far the most effective option, but also the more expensive choice. This is a safe procedure, and highly recommended.

LOOKING FORWARD

“I’m going to ditch in the ocean—everyone, brace for impact.” In 1957, just after the start of the Vietnam War, my grandfather, Thomas White, was on a late-night flight 30,000 ft over the East China Sea on TDY from Clark Airforce Base in the Philippines to Okinawa, Japan. Two years into the war, the airplanes in that region suffered from both a lack of maintenance and over-use, a fact which became shockingly apparent, 200 miles into the 1400-mile trip when the furthest outside left engine on the four-engine plane stalled out and would not restart. The captain informed everyone that he would be continuing to the destination with just the three remaining engines. Seven hundred miles out, the furthest point from any potential landing point, the second engine stalled out on the same side and would not restart. The plane dropped from 30,000 ft to 3,000 ft in a matter of minutes as the pilot advanced the remaining two engines to maximum power to stay aloft. The pilot informed all passengers and crew that he was going to ditch in the water somewhere near land, after he verified their location with ground control, so that rescue could find them because there would not be enough fuel to get to Okinawa. Luckily, the navigator evaluated the situation and calculated that if they lost all the extra weight in the plane, they could make it the remaining seven hundred miles to Okinawa. The crew opened the cargo doors, and my grandfather and half of the other 112 souls on board who were military, began quickly relieving the plane of cargo, suitcases, military equipment, seats, and anything they could remove, disassemble, or break off to lighten the load. The aircraft was met three hundred miles out by search planes and rescue helicopters, but as the navigator calculated, the aircraft landed safely in Okinawa. My grandfather was friends with the ground-crew chief, and stuck around after his arrival to ask him how much fuel the aircraft had remaining. The crew chief said that the navigator must have known his stuff because the fuel was unmeasurable.

“What the #?*! do I do now?” By Robert Tilley Jr.

The lesson learned from the plane trip story is that every business needs a skilled navigator that can add value to the hard decisions business owners must make in deciding what changes must be made due to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially if they are thinking they might not make it. Who is your navigator? This unprecedented time in contemporary history has upended normal business operations in such an unforeseen way that it is not only nearly impossible to prepare for but perplexing to triage. While some businesses have no option but to shutter temporarily, others are overworked with not enough employees and equipment to fill the need. But, even then, the entire business operations change due to social distancing and concerns of infection and spread, balancing productivity with a new type of risk. With that, a new normal of barely managed chaos has taken hold. Although it appears the United States is starting on the downside of the curve, other countries and continents, such as India and Africa, have not yet peaked. Both within the United States, and globally, businesses will be forced to rethink the way they operate—to adapt or be culled from the herd. The ongoing global pandemic will continue to present severe challenges to businesses who are not only trying to adapt, but also stay profitable. Whether the challenge is the current global personal protective equipment (PPE) shortage, remote workers, essential employer businesses trying to prevent employee infection, or a temporarily shuttered businesses wondering how to reopen in a manageable way, all face the same question… “What do I do now?”

“Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.” - Warren Buffet

LOOKING FORWARD

In Robert Mnookin’s book, Bargaining with the Devil: When to Negotiate and When to Fight, he offers us all some sound advice. When faced with a “Devil” such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Mnookin explains that making a rational pragmatic assessment of any proposed business changes, vetted by trustworthy advisors, helps to balance different trade-offs and predictions, or different value judgments about whether ditching in the ocean is the right thing to do or is riding out the storm of COVID-19 the right answer? Your “navigator” helps take the emotion out of the business decisions, by having someone, your navigator, to solve the Warren Buffett risk dilemma by being confident that you know what you’re doing. Thankfully, mitigating business risk by preventing employee exposure is a choice, and as a goal, is attainable with the right information and actions. Peter L. Bernstein, the father of investment economics in the United States, explains that “The word ‘risk’ derives from the early Italian word ‘risicare’, which means ‘to dare’. In this sense, the risk is a choice rather than a fate. The actions we dare to take, which depend on how free we are to make choices, are what the story of risk is all about...The essence of risk management lies in maximizing the areas where we have some control over the outcome while minimizing the areas where we have no control over the outcome.” While we have no control over the fact that COVID-19 has forced us to change the way we do business, we do have control over whether or not we will adapt in ways to protect our company, our customers, and our employees. Although this presents challenges to business operations, essentially, it boils down to Occupational Safety and implementing controls and solutions around employee safety into the business operations. Controlling exposures to occupational hazards is the fundamental method of protecting workers. Traditionally, a hierarchy of controls is used as a means of determining how to implement feasible and effective control solutions, and is promoted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention (CDC). The idea behind this hierarchy is that the control methods at the top of hierarchy are more effective and protective than those at the bottom. Following this hierarchy typically leads to the implementation of inherently safer systems, where the risk of illness or injury has been substantially reduced. NIOSH leads a national initiative with the CDC called Prevention through Design (PtD) to prevent or reduce occupational injuries, illnesses, and fatalities through the inclusion of prevention considerations in all designs that impact workers. This hierarchy of controls addressing employee safety is a fundamental PtD strategy. Occupational safety and health professionals use the “hierarchy of controls” framework to select ways of controlling workplace hazards. In other words, the best way to control a hazard is to systematically remove it from the workplace, rather than relying on workers to reduce their exposure. During a COVID-19 outbreak, when it may not be possible to eliminate the hazard, the most effective protection measures are (listed from most effective to least effective): engineering controls, administrative controls, safe work practices (a type of administrative control), and PPE. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of control measure when considering the ease of implementation, effectiveness, and cost, and likely, a combination of control measures are necessary to protect workers from exposure. In addition to the types of workplace controls discussed below, CDC guidance for businesses provides employers and workers with recommended COVID-19 infection prevention strategies to implement in workplaces.

identification and isolation of potentially infectious individuals as a critical first step in protecting workers, visitors, and others. Safe work practices are types of administrative controls that include procedures for safe and proper work which are used to reduce the duration, frequency, or intensity of exposure to a hazard. While engineering and administrative controls are considered more effective in minimizing exposure to COVID-19, PPE may also be needed to prevent certain exposures. While correctly using PPE can help prevent some exposures, it should not take the place of other prevention strategies, and in light of the PPE shortage, those strategies should be even more in the forefront than usual. As Jack Welch, former CEO of GE famously said, “Don’t manage – lead change before you have to.” The change is coming. We have already been plunged into managing chaos, but from this chaos can come a clarity that will help develop the long-term business plans, goals, and strategy. “Create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.”

Engineering controls involve isolating employees from work-related hazards, such as, work from home. In workplaces where this can be implemented, these types of controls reduce exposure to hazards without relying on worker behavior and can be one of the most costeffective solutions to implement. Administrative controls require action by the worker or employer, which inherently adds risk. Typically, administrative controls are changes in work policy or procedures to reduce or minimize exposure to a hazard, such as prompt

Advanced Endodontics Changing the face of root canals, one patient at a time. Believe it or not, there is beauty in a root canal. With over 15 million root canals performed every year, choosing to receive root canal treatment means choosing to save your natural teeth. Not only will you keep the natural appearance of your beautiful smile but you will maintain the strength and sensation of the treated tooth while protecting your other teeth from further wear and tear. Although general dentists are able to perform root canal treatments, in extreme cases it’s best to visit an endodontist, otherwise known as a root canal specialist. You may be questioning how you would even know if you needed a root canal. One of the most tell-tale signs of needing a root canal is sudden sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures while eating or drinking. Other common symptoms you may experience include severe pain while chewing or biting, a chipped or cracked tooth, swelling in the gums or darkening of the gums. In these instances, it’s worth consulting an endodontist. When experiencing extreme and constant pain or swelling, you should schedule an appointment immediately as this would be considered a dental emergency. While all of this may sound scary, the procedure itself is not. During treatment, the infected pulp inside of the tooth is cleaned out and replaced with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Then, a temporary filling is placed until you return to your general dentist for the final restoration. After that, the treatment is complete. People often misinterpret the pain of needing a root canal for the pain of actually receiving treatment. Remember, not only are you alleviating your pain but you are saving your very own, natural tooth. With proper care, a tooth that has received root canal treatment will last a lifetime. At Advanced Endodontics, our motto is “changing the face of root canals, one patient at a time.” Our dedicated team prides itself on serving patients with comfort, care and convenience. We utilize technology such as surgical microscopes, apex locators and CBCT scans for the utmost accuracy prior to and during root canal treatments. We also offer nitrous oxide (or laughing gas), blankets, headphones to listen to music and a wide range of movies to watch all to create a relaxing and stress-free environment. With five locations across Central Florida, state-of-the-art technology and a highly trained staff, we’re here to take care of your endodontic needs. Let’s save that radiant, natural smile.
