CITY NEWS

IN CASE

YOU MISSED IT STY L E E V E N TS , NE WS & G O S S I P F R O M A R O U ND O R LA ND O By Riesa Pascal

Welcome back, Orlando! It’s my joy to wish you a Happy New Year! 2023 is

sure to be another memorable, fun-filled year and as always, I’m going to be right here every month bringing you all the latest recaps and highlights. For now, it’s time to wind the clock back to December and find out how the city of Orlando celebrated this past holiday season and the start of a new year. Here are a few of the most important events, just in case you missed it! Lake Nona Town Center was transformed into the festive Peppermint Square for Lake Nona’s 5th Annual “Oh, What Fun!” Holiday Festival. The festivities ran from December 7-24 and even spilled over to the adjacent Boxi Park. In addition to plenty of holiday treats available for purchase, Santa and Mrs. Claus were also on hand for photos. The festival also included plenty of Instagrammable holiday décor that made for the perfect holiday photo backdrop. The centerpiece was a 24-foot Christmas tree, but the event was also the place to go for those looking for a tree to take home. Peppermint Forest Christmas tree lot was on site ready for attendees to find their perfect tree. Throughout December, SeaWorld held their Christmas Celebration which saw the park transformed into a winter wonderland sparkling with millions of beautiful lights. Each night ended with the spectacular Fireworks and Fountains Finale, all choreographed to holiday music. Sesame Street fans delighted in the daily Christmas parade including Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie and more. In addition, Elmo’s Christmas Wish Show saw friends from Sesame Street help Elmo find his Christmas wish. Another returning favorite was Rudolph’s ChristmasTown where guests immersed themselves in the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Guests could even take a spin around the outdoor ice skating rink at Bayside Stadium for a true Winter Wonderland experience. Thousands of Central Floridians and tourists alike chose to celebrate the Christmas season at Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center with Christmas at the Gaylord Palms. Presented by Pepsi, ICE! returned this year and saw visitors don the resort’s signature blue parkas and step into a winter wonderland spilling over with more than two million pounds of colorful ice. In addition to unique and rideable slides made out of ice, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Was retold to the masses in larger-than-life ice sculptures. Families from all over the world make Epcot International Festival of the Holidays a holiday tradition as kitchens located throughout the 11 countries in Epcot’s World Showcase showed off how the holidays are celebrated around the globe. Park guests easily got their steps in exploring the different cultures during the celebratory time of the year. Many chose to spend their entire day strolling

18

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

between the pavilions doing some holiday shopping and enjoying costumed performers entertaining in the different countries. Disney’s beloved Candlelight Processional also returned this year much to the delight of park guests. Each night of the event, a celebrity narrator told the story of Christmas, recounting the biblical tale of a savior born in Bethlehem. Woven into the production were stirring songs of hope and joy performed by the orchestra and massed choir. Night of a Million Lights arranged by Give Kids The World Village had a brand new location for the 2022 holiday season. The sparkling lights spectacular dazzled brighter than ever at Live H20 Water Park located at Margaritaville Orlando Resort in Kissimmee. The event ran until January 1st and invited visitors to walk through dazzling displays that contained over 3 million holiday lights. Guests enjoyed festive family activities and live entertainment for a one-of-a-kind, fully interactive holiday experience. Proceeds from Night of a Million Lights benefitted the non-profit which fulfills the wishes of critically ill children who want to visit central Florida. Walt Disney World donated the majority of lights and other companies, including LEGOLAND Florida, Kennedy Space Center and SeaWorld Orlando also pitched in for the noteworthy cause. On January 21st, Science on Tap at Loch Haven Park invited science and beer lovers to swing by for a fun afternoon of brews, food, and science while supporting a good cause! From stouts to ciders, over 40 local breweries from around Central Florida were sampling some of their best brews as guests sipped their way through interactive science demos, enjoyed live music, challenged their friends in games of cornhole or giant jenga, and more. In between the beers, guests could take a break and enjoy a few of Orlando’s favorite local food trucks offering some tasty treats available for purchase. Proceeds from the event enable Orlando Science Center to continue inspiring science learning for life for everyone through engaging experiences that build important skills and illustrate the power of science to address real world challenges. The Florida SMaSH Beer Festival was created to celebrate the creativity and camaraderie of breweries in the Sunshine State and beyond. With a focus on giving back to our community, proceeds of the January 28th event were donated to A Spoon Full of Hope, a product of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, which staged the perfect opportunity for guests to feel good about their day drinking! The festival required each brewery to concoct a beer made from the same single malt and single hop. This limitation forced brewers to think outside the box while focusing on innovative flavor, outstanding quality, and technique. With roughly 80 beers to sample, including one-offs from every brewery, there was something to please everyone.

RECAP

ORLANDO MUSEUM OF ART

NEW YEAR’S EVE

- A RECAP

The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) knows how to throw a party. This year’s New Years Eve celebration was no exception. After three years, the OMA did a comeback, ringing in 2023 with much anticipation. Among the decadent art displays was an array of tasteful Hors d’eourves and desserts. Attendees had the option to roam around the museum’s hallways and visit multiple galleries throughout the night.

By Maha Chaudhry

When it came to music, you could easily find yourself swaying to beats by the Breezeway trio set and to music by DJ Nick Whitney Set and DJ GAY-Z and DJ Totally Cool Dad. Speaking of swaying, there was a couple who spent majority of the night on the dance floor and weren’t shy to admit it was their first NYE together, and one to certainly remember. They two of them had recently met and decided to attend the OMA together as it would be the first time for both. Aside from love being in the air, the event hosted a magical display of fireworks right outside in the garden. At exactly midnight, the night skies filled with dazzling lights and beauty, much fitting to the event. It was certainly a magical night to remember. We look forward to the centennial celebration in 2024. Proceeds from the events benefit the Orlando Museum of Art. Follow OMA to keep up with future events, and to support your local art museum!

OUR TOWN

ORLANDO’S MOST ROMANTIC RESTAURANTS

BY ELIZABETH MEJIA

26

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

OUR TOWN

1. Better than Sex

2. Capa

We recently did a poll on Instagram asking the people of the city beautiful which restaurants they consider to be the most romantic in Orlando. And the people have answered! Orlando is a city that keeps growing, especially in the dining and entertainment world. And with Valentine’s Day around the corner, we wanted to know (and share) the best and most romantic places to take your date on Valentine’s Day. The results reflected the very great thing about Orlando - the diversity. There truly is something for everyone. The oldie but goodie, the fan favorites, the hole-in-the-wall’s, the restaurant that has been open forever, the instagram spot, and so many new restaurants. We received a wide range of answers but narrowed it down to the top 6. The top choice was no other than Better Than Sex. A dessert-only restaurant featuring a dark, sweet, and sexy ambiance, perfect for the occasion. Second choice was a tie between Capa at the Four Seasons and Hillstone in Winter Park. Both excellent places with gorgeous views. Next was Eddie V’s Steakhouse, an elegant fine-dining chain with a seafood & steak menu, plus a cocktail lounge featuring live jazz, perfect for an elegant feel. Fifth place was Prato the famous Italian restaurant on Park Ave. Not only the restaurant is romantic, the stroll on Park ave also sets the perfect Valentine’s Day vibe. And coming in sixth place was Kabooki Sushi, a Michelin star restaurant

3. Hillstone

(along with Prato), Kabooki will never disappoint with their fresh fine fish. There are many amazing restaurants in Orlando, aside from just the ones mentioned above. Other mentions included Cathams, Four Flamingo’s, Garp & Fuss, Ava, Ocean Prime, Otto’s, The Wave, Swan & Dolphin, and many more. So grab your partner or friends and make a reservation at one of these amazing places to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

ROLLS-ROYCE SPECTRE THE FIRST ELECTRIC ROLLS-ROYCE IS A REPLACEMENT OF SORTS FOR THE OLD PHANTOM COUPE.

SPECTRE IS EXPECTED TO HAVE AN ALL-ELECTRIC RANGE OF 320 MILES /520 KILOMETRES WLTP AND OFFER 900NM OF TORQUE FROM ITS 430KW [576 HORSEPOWER] POWERTRAIN. IT IS ANTICIPATED TO ACHIEVE 0-60MPH IN 4.4 SECONDS (0-100KM/H IN 4.5 SECONDS).

Despite the fact that electric cars were quite popular in the early 20th century, Rolls-Royce has never built one, until now. The Spectre is the first, an ultra-luxury coupe that serves as a replacement for the old Phantom Coupe. It heralds a new era for RollsRoyce, which intends to be all-electric by 2030.

The Spectre rides on Rolls-Royce’s “Architecture of Luxury,” an allaluminum platform that underpins the Phantom, Cullinan, and Ghost. The battery pack is integrated into the Spectre’s extruded aluminum spaceframe, and while Rolls-Royce doesn’t mention the energy capacity in its press release, it does tell us the battery pack weighs over 1500 pounds. Specifications aren’t finalized, but Rolls-Royce says that the electric powertrain will offer 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque—similar figures to its current V-12—and estimates the range will be around 260 miles. While not quite as large as the old Phantom Coupe, the Spectre is still enormous for a coupe. Its overall length of 214.685 inches is nearly as much as a long-wheelbase Mercedes S-Class, and it weighs 6559 pounds. Despite that, it does 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds and has a limited top speed of 155 mph.

suspension, too. It’s a development of the “Planar” suspension system used on the new Ghost, which utilizes tuned mass dampers on the front upper wishbones, and a camera system that reads the road ahead and adjusts the air springs and adaptive dampers to compensate. In the Spectre, the ability to decouple antiroll bars is added. This helps isolate each wheel from another when driving straight, but when the car figures out you’re about to start cornering, it reengages the antiroll bars. The design is typically Rolls-Royce, with a long fastback roofline and rearhinged doors that recall the old Wraith, and a backlit front grille like the Ghost. The Spirit of Ecstasy badge is everpresent on the hood, and the Spectre gets the very en vogue lighting setup of thin daytime-running lights up top, smoked headlight lenses below. Wheels are 23 inches, a necessity to balance out the size of the car, says Rolls-Royce. Inside, it’s all familiar Rolls-Royce, too, though the interior spec on this launch car is quite lurid. The signature Rolls-Royce starry night motif— which uses thousands of fiber-optic lights integrated into the headliner to recreate a starry night—now extends to the doors. Naturally, there’s a limitless amount of customization options for both exterior and interior. Rolls-Royce isn’t announcing an exact price, but it says it should be somewhere between the $350,000 Cullinan and the $450,000 Phantom. Customer deliveries are expected in about a year’s time.

San Juan Marriott

RESORT STELLARIS CASINO By: Cathleen K. Bode

The oldest city on U.S. territory in Puerto Rico founded in 1521 by Ponce de Leon, San Juan contains approximately half the entire population of the island's almost four million citizens. The 4-Star resort, with its magnificent Stellaris Casino, contains 525 rooms and was built in 1995 on the beautiful resort-filled, fine white sands of Condado Beach. The Luis Munoz Marin International Airport is a short (4.3 mi.) cab ride away. This smoke-free property is situated near the historic district of Old San Juan, with its wonderfully restored Spanish Colonial architecture and offers a multitude of amenities for the entire family. Guests can enjoy the health club, game room, children programs, Spa, all levels of dining and a casino, just to list a few. On-site, uniformed security is also provided to ensure optimum safety both within the hotel as well as in the parking areas. For a casual, laid back spot to dine, the Beach Bar offers a lunch into late evening menu of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads and of course a tropical drink or two to quench the thirst, if you catch my drift! The ever-popular Coffee Merchant and Bake Shop provides that early morning caffeine 'jolt' serving pastries, sandwiches, salads and coffee drinks throughout the day and into early evening. From mid-day into the late evening hours, those seeking a more relaxed dining experience can enjoy cocktails and a full menu of international fare as well as live music and dancing on selected nights. I decided to indulge in some immediate pampering and visited the quaint Ocean Club Spa for a massage and much needed facial. Needless to say, these treatments do so much to relax ones’ self both physically and mentally, setting the tone for the entire vacation. All sorts of other bodily treatments are also available for both men and women. Wish to try your luck at the games of chance? All that's necessary is to slither into the beautifully carpeted, furnished and accessorized Stellaris casino, with its gorgeous crystal chandeliers majestically hanging throughout. You will obviously need a pocketful of cash once you settle on the appropriate game you wish to conquer, then immerse yourself into the challenge lying ahead. Remember this, if you are fortunate enough to jump out into a lead, don't get greedy, take the money and run although one enterprising older gentleman seated at my table advised me to put aside my original investment and then “just have fun with

their money”! There are so many other things to do when in San Juan. In addition to the on-site hotel amenities, there are many sightseeing attractions, great restaurants, and exciting nightlife venues. Visit Spanish Colonial towns and tropical forests, engage in water sports of all kinds, from swimming to snorkeling off coral reefs, scuba diving explorations of underwater caves, golf, tennis, horseback riding, boating, hiking, cycling and of course…SHOPPING! To arrange for these activities, we suggest planning through Travel Services, Inc., an in-house Destination Management Company (DMC) at the Marriott. From airport transfers to sightseeing trips, tours of water and land-based activities to cooking classes with renowned chefs, TSI can do it all. We opted to take their Kayaking Bioluminescent Bay Tour of Las Cabezas de San Juan, which is located on Road 987 near Las Croabas, at the northeastern-most tip of the island. This Natural Reserve is owned by The Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico and consists of 445 acres of land featuring seven distinct ecosystems including: coral reefs, sandy beaches, sub-tropical dry forests, sea grass beds and one of the few bioluminescent bays in the world. Beginning at sunset our eco-guides got us into our two person kayaks and brought all necessary safety equipment and lights. After receiving

pre-ride training covering all aspects of the tour and operation of the kayaks, we paddled to the entrance of a mystical channel leading to an area where the mangroves create natural tunnels. Sounds of wildlife surrounded us. After this 15 to 20 minute paddle under the blanket of night sky, our guide stopped to give commentary on the various points of interest: identification of bird life inhabitants, Marine life using the lagoon as a sanctuary, information on visible stars and an explanation of the bioluminescent micro-organisms that give the water its mysterious light. Awesome! (It might be a good idea to wear a bathing suit beneath your clothing, as you will almost certainly get wet along the way!). The only real downside was that it took 2 ½ hours to travel from the hotel to the Bay along slow winding roads, making three other stops to pick up others from hotels along the way. Might not be a bad idea to chip in with a few others and rent a car for a day otherwise bring your ‘Dramamine’! TO LOVE IS TO LOVE FROM WITHIN By Maha Chaudhry

Since our younger days, we’ve been exposed to the greatest love stories of all times. It began with the fairytales that were read to us and the Disney prince and princess who depicted love in the most magical way, then it eventually transitioned into romance movies, novels and social media. We are shown that love is falling in love with someone else, and were conditioned to believe that the greatest love story we will ever have is with another person. But now that I look back in hindsight, I have to say that I disagree. Although I love, love and believe that there is a special love out there for everyone, I am a firm believer that the greatest love you will ever have is the love you hold for yourself. And here’s why When you love yourself, whole heartedly, you welcome the world to do the same. It sounds pretty easy, but self-love is a journey. It consists of forgiveness, acceptance and unlearning beliefs that date as early back to childhood. It means getting honest with yourself and truly believing that you are deserving of the kind of love you desire. It is then you will better be able to manifest love with respect, admiration and lastly, unconditional love for yourself. Author Louise Hay explained it best herself when she said it is when you love who you are that you bring out the best in you. I’ve heard many people say that I will be the happiest when I meet the love of my life. The truth is, happiness is yours to claim right now, and it comes from nowhere other than yourself. Does a healthy relationship make us happier? Sure, it can enrich our lives, but, unless we feel good from within, we may struggle to accept the love with receive from others. We may find it instead to be a temporary feeling that will eventually fade or burnout. However, when you practice self-love, you are constantly putting your self-worth to the forefront, which I believe should be a prerequisite for any

relationship. For this reason, healing is imperative, especially after heartbreak. It allows you to let go of what no longer serves you, including negative and limiting beliefs, and opens you up to accepting healthy love again. When people neglect healing, they can find themselves in a pattern of disappointment, not being able to clearly understand where they are going wrong. Though you can continue to grow with your partner, as a healthy relationship holds space for growth, it’s still important to bring your authentic self into a relationship - and if that means to heal some wounds in order to give more of yourself to someone, then in that moment, that’s what needs to be done. Remember, what you give out, you get back. Practicing self -love with healing will also allow you to create healthy boundaries. It is no surprise that the best things in life sometimes come unexpectedly. There’s a reason people say love happens when you least expect it, and that’s because it happens when you are embracing yourself, embracing your own love story with your dreams, goals, desires and the things that bring you joy. When you are doing you, you are flowing in the kind of energy that draws others towards you. And that kind of energy is contagious because it vibrates high. This Valentine’s Day and always, whether you are taken, single, or unsure, practice self-love by treating yourself to something you enjoy, and celebrate you - your growth, resilience and everything you’ve endured to get to where you are today. And for anyone who needs to hear this - you are deserving of the love you seek for yourself and from others. Claim it. Own it. Embrace it. Love it. Like the great Rumi said, “What you seek is seeking you.” Fall in love with yourself, and love will always be on your side.

A new year of abundances has begun, and this is a great opportunity for us to let go

of the old, and welcome the new “ME”. We have been given a new year of new chances to set goals for our physical, emotional, mentally and spiritually in all areas of life. What happened in the past, it’s the past. The future is not the reality yet. We must focus on where we are and that where we are, it’s here in this present moment. A New Year’s resolution is important for the new beginning, to enhance the self-efficacy. It provides us the virtue of aspiring to our goals and achieving them. You will have a sense of control over what and how you would live your life. Healthy and Happy life:

THE NEW

“ME”

RESOLUTION Author : Natalie Smith

Let start the new “ME” with making yourself a priority by loving yourself first. Loving yourself first is a must! It’s the master key to a positive and happy life in all aspects of life. Only “YOU” can take care of yourself in the ways that you need the most, because you know yourself better than anyone else. Noone can complete you, but you! You can be a better version of you and will have enough love for others. Your self-love will lead to selfconfidence, self-discipline, self-awareness, self-worth, self-control, healthy boundaries and many more. Self-love activities to enhance body

Self-love activities to enhance positive

positivity:

mindset:

1. Meditation 2. Practice Gratitude by journaling 3. Exercise 4. Healthy diet 5. Spend some time outside 6. Read books 7. Attend personal growth seminars, workshops or listen to self growth podcasts 8. Reward yourself 9. Skincare routine 10. Stay hydrated

1. Be authentic with who you are 2. Stop comparing yourself to others 3. Don’t worry about other people opinions 4. Let go of things you can’t control 5. Don’t hold on to toxic people 6. Process your fear 7. Trust yourself to make good decisions for yourself. 8. Allow yourself to make mistakes 9. Take every opportunity life presents or create your own. 10. Set a healthy boundaries

By putting these elements in place, you will be more likely to achieve your goals. Your mindset has shifted to what is important for you and why it’s a must for you to check off all your goals. It’s easy to write down the goals for your new year's resolution but how come it’s hard to accomplish all of them. Because we don’t put the value in ourselves enough therefore the process of the end result is lacking. When you make yourself a priority you then want your goals to achieve because you know the value of the outcome.

DO’S & DON’TS OF

PLASTIC SURGERY

The hardest part of deciding to undergo plastic surgery is “fear of the unknown.” Plastic surgery teams often find that the most important responsibility to make sure each patient knows what to expect every step along the way. We’ve gathered for you our top ten “do’s and don’ts” of plastic surgery. Beyond choosing your plastic surgeon wisely (which is a given!) the below is the carefully curated short list of the things we wish every plastic surgery patient knew. We hope sharing our knowledge helps you with your journey to a new you! DO #1 | HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS You may want to have Kim Kardashian’s nose or Angelina Jolie’s lips, but it’s unrealistic to think that you’re going to end up looking exactly like your dream celebrity. There’s a science behind what makes each of us “beautiful” and it could very well be that Angelina’s lips wouldn’t look good on you, given your unique facial anatomy. A skillful plastic surgeon will be able to give you the general characteristics of the celebrity’s feature you desire, however, no two faces are ever the same so always maintain realistic expectations post-op. In the end, the goal of good plastic surgery is to have natural-looking results that enhance your overall appearance without looking fake or out-of-proportion with the rest of your face. DO #2 | MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT BEFORE SURGERY If plastic surgery is part of a more ambitious plan to a healthier, slimmer new you, make sure any planned weight loss happens before surgery. Fluctuations in weight after surgery can cause

44

| STYLETOME.COM

HEALTH & BEAUTY

unanticipated volume changes, which can negatively impact the surgery results. For the same reasons, maintaining a healthy weight after surgery will maximize results. DO #3 | CONSIDER YOUR CARETAKER You’ll need someone to take you home and care for you directly following surgery, so keep the availability of your “caretaker” in mind, too, when discussing surgery dates. Plan for this person to take care of you at least until the morning after your surgery. Also keep in mind that you can’t drive while taking pain medications, so you will need someone to drive you to and from any appointments you have. How long you stay on pain medications depends on your pain tolerance. Some patients are off the pain meds in a day or two while others prefer to continue using for about a week afterwards. It’s worth noting that some plastic surgery teams, like us, partner with a caretaker service where a nurse takes you home from surgery and cares for you overnight. DO #4 | PLAN TO TAKE APPROPRIATE TIME OFF While it is certainly possible to go back to work after a long weekend of recovery, the large majority of facial plastic surgery patients prefer to take one to two weeks off work. After the first week, any stitches and bandages will be gone, but it can take up to two weeks before you’re “restaurant ready” – meaning if you were to go to a restaurant, the person at the table next to you wouldn’t be able to tell you had anything done. DO #5 | WAIT AT LEAST SIX MONTHS BEFORE JUDGING YOUR RESULTS We all want instant gratification, but recovery from plastic surgery is a journey not a race. Sure, you’ll look “restaurant ready” after two weeks, but the final results may take up to a year to fully materialize. For example, residual swelling can take many months to dissipate. Acquaintances won’t notice the swelling or small imperfections, but you will! The body’s healing process is not only complex and involved, but it also is unique to each person. Trust in yourself and in your plastic surgeon, whom you spent so much time choosing. DON’T #1 | DON’T MAKE COST YOUR PRIMARY DECISION FACTOR Sure, there’s a general ballpark that most plastic surgery should fall within, but price alone should not be your primary factor when choosing who to go with. If you want cheap, go to Mexico, but beware! There are a number of patients with botched jobs from other countries that need revisions. Plastic surgery is an investment in yourself and you should invest wisely. DON’T #2 | DON’T LET YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY DO “ARM CHAIR” DOCTORING Everyone has an opinion, and during the recovery process your close friends and family will be sharing theirs whether you want to hear them or not! Usually by the time a patient shares the concerns their friends and family have raised, they are in a near panic. Swelling, asymmetry, tightness and numbness are all normal parts of the recovery process. How many recoveries from plastic surgery have your friends and family observed? Remember, if you’ve picked a good plastic surgeon, he or she has at least eleven years of formal academic training under their belt. For goodness sake, reach out to your surgeon’s office when you have a concern or fear. Don’t let comments by your friends fester in the absence of professional guidance.

DON’T #3 | DON’T LOOK IN THE 10X MIRROR EVERY DAY After surgery, the recovery process is understandably the most important focus of your daily life. Every day, you’ll get up and look at yourself in the mirror. Avoid the temptation to get out the 10X magnification mirror and start nit picking. Think about this: you’ll see the most dramatic results when you avoid looking too closely at yourself every day. When you are closely examining every little detail on a constant basis, it’s hard to see any changes. If you want a more objective perspective of your progress, take a photo once a month and try to go easy on yourself in between photos. The recovery process is a journey, not a race and it’s unique to each person. The final results won’t appear overnight and often you’ll look worse before you’ll look better. That’s just the way the body heals. DON’T #4 | DON’T ATTRIBUTE OLD FLAWS TO YOUR RECENT SURGERY It happens so often – patients ignore our Don’ts #2 and #3 and show up at a follow-up visit demanding to know why the surgery has caused wrinkles, or some other perceived change, in another area of their face. Take a photo and put it side by side with the photo taken before surgery. Sure enough, the patient sees that the flaw was there before the surgery and it’s just because he or she is looking at every nook and cranny during the recovery process that they notice it now for the first time. Similarly, now that one part of your face is looking amazing, you may start to notice other areas of your face that don’t look so amazing. For example, patients who undergo upper eyelid (blepharoplasty) surgery may start to notice the bags or dark circles under the eyes more after surgery than they did before. The solution to this, as you might imagine, is lower eyelid surgery and this is why it’s always wise to get your plastic surgeon’s professional opinion on what surgeries he or she would recommend doing together, all at once, instead of going to your consultation with one specific surgery in mind. DON’T #5 | DON’T DRINK ALCOHOL, SMOKE OR TAKE BLOOD THINNERS IN THE 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY It might seem like a good idea to unwind with a nice glass of wine once the bandages are off after your surgery, however, it’s best to abstain for from drinking any alcohol for two weeks before and after plastic surgery. As you may know, alcohol dehydrates the body, which can actually cause extra swelling, and it also acts as a blood thinner, increasing the risk of bleeding. Ibuprofen and aspirin are also blood thinners - you’ll want to avoid those, too. Aspirin is a common ingredient found in over-the-counter pain medications, so be sure to read the label carefully before taking anything not prescribed by your surgeon. Finally, anesthesia and smoking is obviously not a great mix, so smoking within three weeks before and after plastic surgery is a big DON’T! Smoking impairs the ability of blood to carry oxygen so it can influence how your body reacts to the anesthesia. Also, smoking can decrease blood flow to the operated area, preventing proper healing. If you want to ensure the best recovery possible and maximize your surgery results, then it's time to quit smoking.

RED FOR EVERY SKIN COLOR The colors we wear can either make or break the vibrancy of our skin. When it comes to makeup, we should match our lip shade the same as we would match foundation or face powder. Once you understand your own skin, you will know the hues that work best for you. The first step in defining your skin tone is by determining the undertones of your skin. The best way of recognizing your undertone is by looking at the veins in your wrist. If they appear to be blue or purple, you have cool undertones. Cool undertones call for lipstick colors that have deep blu-ish shades. So instead of an orangey red, you would go for deep, purple-tinted red. Also,

dusty purple and berry shades compliment your skin! If your veins are slightly more green, you have warm undertones. Vibrant colors are your friend! You can go for an orangey shade or bright red! Peachy-pink shades are also a match for you. If your veins seem to be a mixture of these colors, then you might have neutral undertones. Neutral undertones basically just means you’ve been blessed with the ability to rock basically any shade of red. Orangey reds, pink-reds, berry-reds, wine red. My best advice to anybody with a neutral skin tone is to rock the everlasting classic Marilyn Monroe red...just because you can!

GLOW GIRL Makeup to make you blinding! We all know the feeling of a killer highlighter to accentuate your sharpest features, but there are other ways to make you radiant. An easily applied balmy eyeshadow adds shine and gloss to wake up your look, and glitter gel smudged underneath your eyes can hide dark circles. High-shine lip gloss circa-2005 is also making a comeback to complement this year’s trend.

CELEBRITY SOUP

ACTORS WHO’VE SUCCESSFULLY PLAYED ROLES WRITTEN FOR

SOMEONE ELSE CAN YOU IMAGINE THESE ICONIC FILMS WITHOUT THEIR RESPECTIVE STARS? I KNOW I SURE CAN’T! By Riesa Pascal

CELEBRITY SOUP

One of the most difficult jobs in Hollywood is undoubtedly that of a casting director. Oftentimes, script writers will have a specific actor in mind from the very start of a project. Sometimes everything works out as intended, but there are also plenty of times where filmmakers and casting directors do not get their first choice and go on to see their movie become a massive flop. However, let’s not forget the memorable times where an actor has absolutely slayed a role that wasn’t written for them! Take a look at the following celebs who were cast to replace an entirely different actor, but completely nailed their role.

Audrey Hepburn In Breakfast at Tiffany's Of course I had to kick off this list with the absolute classic that is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. With all the glitz and glam of the film, it may not surprise you to learn that Truman Capote was actually picturing his friend and famed actress Marilyn Monroe when he wrote the book on which the film is based. He borrowed many qualities from Monroe in conceiving the character while Audrey Hepburn’s background was entirely different. In spite of the book's intentions, Director Blake Edwards chose Hepburn to play Holly Golightly which resulted in her giving the incredibly iconic performance that earned her a 1962 Academy Award nomination for Best Lead Actress.

Wesley Snipes In Blade The comic book character Blade is a half-human, half-vampire hunter whose life mission is to slay vampires. When writing the 1998 screenplay and envisioning the comic book’s move to the big screen, David S. Goyer originally had LL Cool J in mind as he knew he wanted a rugged actor who always looked ready for a fight. As the movie's projected production budget grew, the studio realized that a bigger celebrity name was needed to justify the cost which opened the door for Wesley Snipes to step into the role. Needless to say, the decision proved to be a wise one as Blade became an international hit, spawning two sequels and bringing Marvel to theater screens a full decade before the formal start of the MCU (take that Iron Man!)

Chris Tucker In The Fifth Element If you have never seen The Fifth Element, I need you to drop everything you’re doing and go watch this cult-classic film at once! The 1997 comedic sci-fi epic not only stars Bruce Willis, but also features a supporting character named Ruby Rhod. The character is a hyper-sexual, intergalactic DJ with an androgynous fashion sense that is not unlike that of Prince. In fact, Writer/director Luc Besson actually conceived of Ruby Rhod with the famed pop icon in mind and even got him to sign on for the role. However, a

conflicting tour schedule forced him to drop out and saw comedian Chris Tucker brought in as Prince’s replacement. To say it worked out well is quite the understatement. Tucker was an excellent fit for the role and stole every scene he was in which has helped the film’s continued popularity nearly 30 years later.

Whoopi Goldberg In Sister Act There’s only one celeb who comes to mind when you think of the 1992 crime comedy Sister Act! Of course I’m talking about the one and only Whoopi Goldberg who was cast to play Deloris Wilson, a lounge singer forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program. The film was an instant hit and remains one of Goldberg’s most iconic comedy roles today, but did you know it was originally offered to Bette Midler? The actress once discussed turning down the role in an interview about her career mistakes saying, “There was Sister Act, which was written for me, but I said: ‘My fans don’t want to see me in a wimple.’ I don’t know where I got that from. Why would I say such a thing? So Whoopi did it instead and, of course, she made a fortune.”

Eddie Murphy In Beverly Hills Cop Although we see it all the time now, back in the 80s it was almost unheard of to cast comedians in action movies. One of the first films to break this unspoken rule was Beverly Hills Cop which saw Eddie Murphy come in as freewheeling Detroit cop Axel Foley. Believe it or not, the original script was actually written for Sylvester Stallone with the intention of lightly spoofing his toughguy image. Two weeks before production began, Stallone got cold feet and took it upon himself to rewrite the script as a more typical action flick as opposed to the action-comedy we know it to be today. The executives at Paramount Pictures didn't take too kindly to their script being changed so Stallone got the boot and Eddie Murphy was brought on into the signature role that defined his career and arguably turned him into a full-blown movie star.

Sam Neill In Jurassic Park If you need any proof that the original Jurassic Park was an absolute masterpiece, just think about the fact that we are still making spin-offs today and building entire theme park areas about the films (I’m looking at you Universal Studios). The beloved Steven Spielberg adaptation of Michael Crichton's best-selling dinosaur novel was supposed to see Harrison Ford cast as Alan Grant. The part was even written to fit Ford's personal and onscreen strengths, but for reasons he has never publicly stated, Ford turned the role down and Sam Neill stepped in instead. Fortunately for Spielberg, Jurassic Park was a massive box-office hit and what Neill brought to his role was vital to its success.

ORLANDO’S DOCTORS OF THE YEAR

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s Doctors of the Year’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Avi Bhandary, MD Life Care Planning | Strata Medical MEDICINE When a person suffers a life-altering injury, life care planning becomes essential to their future. Life care planning is forecasting medical costs related to long-term illnesses or injuries. A well-researched life care plan enables an accurate understanding of what resources are required to meet these needs and how much they will cost. A well-presented life care plan helps ensure the traumatically injured receive the long-term care they need and deserve. ART Strata Medical integrates life care planning and expert medical insight into a visual medium to educate and clarify complex topics. Born from the professional experiences of founder Avi Bhandary in Medical Illustration and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Strata Medical enhances attention through visual content while educating about the emotional impact one endures in an injured state. Strata Medical has provided life care plans in three states in less than two years. Uniquely positioned within the healthcare landscape, Strata Medical will expand into markets adjacent to life care planning this year. ECONOMICS Dr. Bhandary will complete coursework in Healthcare economics through Harvard Business School this February and looks to bring insight into the actual cost of healthcare. An in-depth understanding of Healthcare economics is a critical step in the balance of fact and is crucial to understanding what resources are required to meet the needs of those who are traumatically injured. “I draw inspiration from Medicine, Law, Art, and Economics. That inspiration, combined with an engrained commitment to improving, allows our life care plans to represent the needs of the traumatically injured in a clear light. Without that life care plan, the injured are forced to look at their lives through a lens of limited chances.” - Avi Bhandary, MD

Pallavi Cherukupally, MD Physiatrist and Regenerative Medicine Expert Pallavi Cherukupally, MD, co-owner at Regenerative Sport, Spine & Spa, specializes in the use of regenerative medicine to correct common orthopedic issues that are typically treated with pain medicines, steroids and surgeries. Regenerative therapies such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow aspirate (BMA) containing stem cells are a promising treatment for common injuries such as tendonitis, rotator cuff tears of the shoulder, meniscus tears in the knee, and disk derangements of the neck and back. For those who wish to avoid unnecessary surgery and the side effects of prescribed pain medicines, regenerative medicine may be the answer. Most injuries involving the musculoskeletal system are treated sequentially with steroids, physical therapy and eventually surgery when all else fails. Most people are not aware of the damage that these chemical medications are doing to their bodies. Steroids, while effective at eliminating pain in the short term, have been shown to also cause the following: - Tendon weakening or rupture - Thinning of skin and soft tissue around the injection site - Cartilage damage with long term, repeated injections - Avascular necrosis (death of the soft tissue due to restricted blood flow) - Increases the likelihood of needing a joint replacement by 9% per steroid injection PRP and stem cells from BMA are natural treatments that come from our own bodies, so there is no chance of rejection or no harmful side effects. Both PRP and BMA are a regenerative soup of healing factors that promote and initiate the rebuilding process within our bodies. While the immediate gratification of pain relief may not exist, the long term benefits of this treatment speak for themselves as there is no risk of infection, addiction, prolonged downtime or repeat surgery. There are multiple studies that can be found online about the benefits and outcomes of using this treatment method compared to the common treatments as outlined above. Patients who have taken advantage of these services at Regenerative Sport, Spine, & Spa have reported a 60%-90% improvement in function and reduction in pain following treatment. “We have seen many people avoid surgery, stop the use of narcotic pain medicines and return to the joys of their youth.” Dr. Cherukupally Dr. Cherukupally is a graduate of LSU medical school where she earned her MD degree followed by a Residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Chicago. She went on to complete a Fellowship in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine. She has been working in non-surgical orthopedics for nearly 20 years and has performed more than 25,000 injections in the spine, joints, and soft tissues.

Ly T Nguyen, MD Board-Certified Ophthalmologist, Eye Florida

Dr. Nguyen’s first introduction into the world of ophthalmology came when she received some bad news: her father needed cataract surgery. At that time Dr. Nguyen was still a medical student with an undecided specialty at the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine. It was this chance encounter with her father’s cataract surgeon, the late Dr. Jorge Camara, that would eventually pave Dr. Nguyen’s path in ophthalmology.

After graduating, Dr. Nguyen moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, and worked as an associate at Mittleman Eye Center. Needing work-life balance as a mother to her young son, Dr. Nguyen combined the spirit of delivering better patient care and entrepreneurship by opening her own private practice, St. Cloud Eye Center, in an underserved community of Central Florida. With the growth of St. Cloud Eye Center, the practice was later renamed Eye Florida.

With Dr. Camara as her mentor, she developed an aptitude for medical research and publication. Together with other international ophthalmology residents, Dr. Nguyen published articles in prominent ophthalmology journals about a new finding in Asian patients called involutional lateral entropion, and the use of a computer-assisted imageguided system (InstaTrak) in orbital surgery. She also published research findings on public health issues among Vietnamese immigrants in Hawai’i during her medical school training.

As a board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Nguyen specializes in cataract, oculoplastics and minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery. Eye Florida also offers a number of other services, including routine eye exams, screening for eye diseases, and ophthalmic diagnostic testing using state-of-the-art technology— always with a focus on exceptional patient care in an inviting environment.

Dr. Nguyen went on to do her ophthalmology residency at The Rocky Mountain Eye Institute at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. In her second year of residency, her personal life took an unexpected turn and finishing residency seemed like a distant dream. “I didn’t want to give up though. I had to stay focused on finishing,” Dr. Nguyen recalls. Though it wasn’t easy, Dr. Nguyen persevered and completed her residency in three years. She received a Resident Research Award in Ophthalmology, and became an internationally recognized doctor, author, and speaker with publications in peerreviewed journals including the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

During her free time, Dr. Nguyen likes to spend time with her family. She also fills her time with reading, traveling, and gardening. One of her dreams is to write a memoir about the time her parents and siblings escaped Vietnam by boat in the early 1980s and her family’s journey through Hong Kong’s refugee camp. “These memories are stories of where we came from. These are important lessons of hope, determination, and overcoming adversity that I hope I can pass on,” says Dr. Nguyen. Dr. Nguyen says her focus on becoming a better physician and her unwavering determination are lessons from her parents. Reflecting on her day-to-day interactions with her patients: “I love it when, after having cataract surgery, my patients say to me, ‘Doctor! I am so happy that I can see the world again!’ I want my patients to have the same positive experience with me as my father did that day with Dr. Camara.

Michael Steppie, MD Associates in Dermatology Start fresh in 2023 with a skin check to your trusted dermatology specialist.

Associates in Dermatology, your skin cancer and skincare specialists, have served the general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology needs of Central Floridians for over three decades. The practices’ president and medical director, Dr. Steppie is not your average dermatologist. His expert opinions have been quoted in Men’s Health Magazine. He has also been published in the Skin Cancer Foundation Journal. This Mohs micrographic surgeon is also on the forefront of skin cancer treatment and has been engaged in advancing dermatologic research for years. Speaking of skin cancer, a few weeks ago, The Today Show revealed that the first lady’s doctors found a lesion above her right eye during a routine screening as well as another one from the left side of her chest. Both were confirmed to be basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma, for which the first lady was treated with the procedure known as Mohs surgery, is the most common type of skin cancer, but also the most curable form. It’s considered highly treatable, especially when caught early. Jill Biden regularly encourages audiences to schedule cancer screening appointments they may have skipped during the pandemic out of fear of visiting the doctor’s office. A proactive approach is shared by Dr. Steppie. “Our focus is on promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness and prevention. Let’s not forget that the skin is the largest organ in the body and it is

crucial to know how to correctly care for it,” says Steppie, MD.

From life-saving skin cancer treatment such as Mohs micrographic surgery, to routine skin care needs and expert aesthetic procedures, this award-winning practice is dedicated to providing patients state-of-the-art care. “These awards are a reflection of the loyalty and appreciation that our patients have for our practice and expert team of dermatology providers,” says Dr. Steppie.

“In 2023, we will continue to stay on top of cutting-edge treatments and new healthcare technologies that deliver the highest quality of care and convenience, while remaining diligent in keeping our patients safe in our practices,” he concluded. Beyond skin disorders, Associates in Dermatology also treats disorders of the hair and nails and accepts most healthcare plans from major insurance carriers. They have now 17 convenient locations in 6 Central Florida Counties.

CHARITABLE WORK:

Dr. Wardlaw is a missionary who serves in the ministry of dentistry in Central Florida and abroad. She

serves globally through her nonprofit, InspiredPurpose.Org. She's a dental correspondent heard both nationally and internationally six days a week as @DrWendiDDS, "A Healthy Mouth is a Healthy You®." HOW YOU BREATHE MATTERS:

Your mouth is the largest access to the inside of your body. In this season, when many breathe through the mouth, it is essential to understand how crucial nasal breathing is to decrease the effects of viruses such as Covid-19 and Influenza, as well as airborne allergens. Nasal breathing warms and lubricates the air you breathe, protecting your respiratory system. It also increases oxygen levels in your blood, a natural vasodilator increasing systemic healing. But, most importantly, it cleans the air you breathe by stimulating NO (Nitric Oxide) produced in the nose and sinuses. NO is a potent antimicrobial against VIRUSES, bacteria, and fungi and is active in nasal breathing. In addition, those nose hairs protect us from dust, allergens, and foreign particles. It's said up to 20 billion per day. Therefore, if you have a little one at home, establish correct nasal breathing by assuring lips are closed, especially while sleeping. FROM DR. WENDI'S DESK:

Humming is known to increase the body's NO. So, if you add humming to your nasal breathing, you will trigger your parasympathetic nervous system, which in turn causes RELAXATION. :) NO is good for our health and wellness and can also be found in green vegetables. Did you know that breathing through your nose while wearing a face mask can reduce associated headaches and dizziness? For more information, we welcome you into our family of wellness.

Mahnaz Qayyum, MD Elysium Medical Group British shores could not keep Dr. Mahnaz Qayyum away from the beauty of Florida. Inspired by physician parents, Dr. Mahnaz Qayyum discovered that health and beauty requires constant time and attention. Dr. Mahnaz Qayyum has practiced in Orlando, Florida since 2004 and offers her services at two locations: Family Care Specialists of Orlando (Dr. Phillips location) and Elysium Medical Group (Haines City location). Patients continue to lose weight and Dr. Mahnaz Qayyum continues to reduce wrinkles and frown lines. Did you ever look in the mirror and wonder, “could I lose 20 lbs”? She can help you achieve that. First and foremost comes diet and exercise. Patients are asked detailed questions about their lifestyle and eating habits. Not only does she deal with a patient’s day to day requirements, but she also specializes in anti-aging, hormone replacement therapy and weight loss. Her philosophy is to establish and maintain the best quality of life. First, she gets to know the patient’s personality and background. She then asks

patients about their health and beauty goals. A plan is jointly crafted to achieve the patient’s health and beauty goals. A large part of her practice is weight loss. Once patients have reached their medical and weight goals they can discuss aesthetics. Multiple services are offered: skin resurfacing, Botox and fillers. The International Association of Orthopedic Surgeons recognizes Dr. Stewart as A Leading Physician of the World and a Top Orthopedic and Spinal Surgeon in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Stewart joined the Spine and Scoliosis Center in 1996. The Spine and Scoliosis Center has been giving Central Floridians practical, high-quality solutions through revolutionary care for over fifty years. Understanding and diagnosing a patient’s condition is just as important to The Spine and Scoliosis Center as providing the latest in innovative spine procedures and maintaining top-notch facilities. “We’re in a unique position to do minimally invasive surgery plus more complicated procedures,” points out Dr. Stewart, “We do the most difficult spinal deformity (scoliosis, etc.) and complicated revision surgeries in the area. We are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do a lot of things that make a real difference in people’s lives. We were able to take someone who was in a wheelchair and give her the ability to walk again,” Dr. Stewart says. “It’s really about taking someone with pain and disability and offering them a dramatic improvement in both function and comfort level.” Dr. Stewart sees patients in Davenport.
