SUSAN JEFFERS

Susan Jeffers started her career as a photographer on South Beach over ten years ago testing models from great agencies like Irene Marie, Ford, Michele Pommier and L’egence. She then left for Detroit and Chicago where she gained recognition for her talent in Grand Prix models and Auto show girls. Susan has been photographing Tampa’s greatest talent for nearly eight years. She has gained wide recognition for her beauty and spa photography. She is an expert with light and has a knack for art direction. Her recent endeavors in digital have proved her talents even stronger.

GREG ALEXANDER Greg Alexander is a world citizen who travels the planet to transmute all the quintessence of femininity on glazed paper. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, the ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he has found his home port. As a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which is able to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of beauty is fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

COURTNEY CAGGIANO Courtney was born in Miami and currently resides in Orlando, Florida. She graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BA degree in English Literature, where she developed her passion for the written word. She pursues all forms of writing, including journalism, nonfiction, critical literary analysis, and inspirational writing. You can read her published work on her website: CourtneyMaeCaggiano.com or on Instagram at @bycocomae.

RIESA PASCAL Riesa was born in London, England and now resides in sunny Orlando, Florida. She is a proud graduate of Florida State University where she double majored in creative writing and communication. In addition to editorial writing, Riesa is also deeply passionate about broadcast journalism and currently freelances as a TV personality with various networks in Central Florida. You can learn more about Riesa at her website: RiesaPascal.com

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, Wow, what a rollercoaster ride we’ve all been through this past year! It’s not completely over of course, but we believe it will get better with every month. What better way to continue this year than with a month that celebrates love. After everything we have experienced in 2020, it is evident that love is what we need, as a community, as a city, and as a nation. As we step into this month of love, we present to you our wonderful Valentine’s issue, full of uplifting features and articles to remind you of the gift of love. In this February issue of Orlando Style, you’ll find a Valentine’s Day gift guide for your “Valentine”, helping you make your loved one’s day super special so that you can show what they mean to you. In this issue you can discover valuable information about the new COVID-19 vaccine. And as we continue to head toward the light at the end of the tunnel of this pandemic, be sure to support our local small businesses and restaurants that provide so much to our great city. There is a lot to do and see in Central Florida, and we have some fantastic ways for you to spend time with your loved ones in the beauty of Orlando. Let us introduce you to Mead Botanical Garden, a beautiful 48-acre floral oasis located in Winter Park. As we learned from 2020, nothing is quite as important as your health, and we want to help you find the best doctor for your needs. In our Orlando’s Doctors of the Year feature, you will meet our city’s top health professionals recommended by their local peers and our readers. It’s always important to look forward to what the future holds, and there’s no better time to have that mindset than 2021. Why not take a look at Orlando’s selection of real estate to plan for your future? With our Portfolio Real Estate feature, you’ll find amazing properties just waiting for you to call them home. Don’t miss the boat again… mortgage rates are only going up from here. Contact a professional Realtor® to get you the home of your dreams. As always, we at Orlando Style would like to thank you, our dedicated readers. Your loyalty to our work encourages us each month to create an innovative issue that inspires you. Happy Valentine’s Day

Sven J. Bode, Founder/Publisher P.S. As we grieve for all of our loved ones that have been lost due to this horrific pandemic. Please stay safe. Get the Vaccine!

With a 25+ history as a top agent in Orlando Florida with over $600 million plus in sales, Dianne Duvall is a sought-after trusted advisor for both buyers and sellers from Central Florida and around the world. As a long time Windermere resident, Dianne was one of early navigators of the Windermere luxury marketplace as an elite member of Tavistock Group’s sales teams on both of their premier golf and lake lifestyle properties; Lake Nona and the legendary Isleworth. Dianne started her career marketing and selling golf and lake front properties in Bay Hill and on the Windermere chain of lakes. Her lakefront expertise evolved in an organic way, as she was on the water daily with her children Sammy and Camille Duvall, both multiple time world champion water skiers and key members of the undefeated United States Water Ski Team. After many successful years working inside the gates of these communities and on the water, Dianne sought out a way to extend her expertise to a team who is wholly focused on delivering the Windermere Lake lifestyle. Corcoran Global Living is a perfect partner to assist Dianne in helping her clients in Central Florida and around the world.

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE DEBUTS AT MEAD BOTANICAL GARDEN IN WINTER PARK Limited Tickets Now Available for the Epic Follow Up to “Dazzling Nights”, Which Takes Visitors Through Wonderland with Alice and All the Beloved Characters, Combining Circus Arts, Dance, Music, Comedy and Theater Presented by Creative City Project and Massey Services

Just as the awe-inspiring, sold-out, holiday event “Dazzling Nights” comes to a close, Creative City Project presents its next magical adventure, “Down the Rabbit Hole”, debuting at Mead Botanical Garden from February 6 through March 14. Down the Rabbit Hole is a theatrical journey unfolding as guests follow Alice through the botanical gardens. Upon arrival, guests meet Alice at the route’s starting place in limited groups of 10-15 and explore the gardens where they encounter all their favorite characters like the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar, the Queen of Hearts and also some new ones. Circus arts, dance, music and theater come together to put guests right in the middle of this beloved story. In partnership with director Donald Spencer from Modern Theatricals and presented by Massey Services and the creators of “Dazzling Nights”, “Bright Young Things” and the annual IMMERSE Festival in Orlando, Down the Rabbit Hole brings Mead Botanical Garden to life with brilliant costumes, theatrical lighting, special effects and a fantastic musical soundtrack. The outdoor adventure is designed to ensure social distancing and safety amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and visitors age five and older will be required to wear masks. “We are very excited to present our newest experience ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’, which will undoubtedly be a magical adventure for everyone,” says Creative City Project Executive Director, Cole NeSmith. “It has been our goal since the onset of Covid-19 to continually create safe, memorable, inspiring, spectacular events for audiences of all ages. We are thrilled following the massive success of Dazzling Nights to transform Mead Botanical Garden into Wonderland and showcase amazing Central Florida talent, thanks to our partners at Massey Services, and we look forward to everyone taking an unforgettable trip ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ with us.” For more information visit: www.creativecityproject.com

CELEBRITY SOUP

CELEBRITY INVENTORS PROOF THAT CREATIVE GENIUS CAN COME FROM JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE! By Riesa Pascal In 2018, the U.S. issued its ten millionth patent, which marked a major milestone in the 228-year history of the American intellectual property system. Some of these patents have been given to world-class inventors like Thomas Edison, who was granted more than 1,000 patents in his lifetime. Others have been issued to ordinary people who simply thought of a new and improved way of doing things. Then there is the group that falls somewhere in the middle because while celebrities may not be renowned inventors... they can certainly be far from ordinary. Charlie Sheen You may not agree with the practicality behind every invention on this list, but I personally found this one to be quite a great ideal! Believe it or not, Two And A Half Men’s Charlie Sheen owns the patent for an invention that aims to make it easier to use lip balm. The applicator dispenser would have a retractable cap, as opposed to the more common removable one. Sheen revealed that the idea came to him while driving and trying to apply Chapstick. The frustration at not being able to do so with one-hand inspired the patent which he then pitched to Chapstick. Unfortunately for Sheen, Chapstick ultimately passed on implementing his invention. Jamie Lee Curtis Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has been a mother both on the big screen and in real life so she is well familiar with the struggles of motherhood. While changing her daughter’s diaper one day, Curtis realized that she didn’t have any wipes nearby which sparked a thought that led to an incredibly handy invention for fellow parents. In 1987, Curtis designed and patented a disposable diaper with a waterproof pocket that holds a couple baby wipes for easy cleanup. However, don’t run off to the store just yet! Ever the environmentalist, Curtis has vowed not to manufacture her invention until diapers become biodegradable. Michael Jackson The King of Pop is known for many things, one of which includes his ground-breaking dance moves. Though the moonwalk remains most memorable, who could possibly forget the gravity defying lean he pulled off in the Smooth Criminal music video? Jackson pulled off the move with hidden cables and a harness, but this only worked with the assistance of movie magic. To perform the maneuver live on stage, Jackson co-invented a shoe with a heel that could attach to a hook on the floor. The hook anchored his feet in place while he leaned forward 45 degrees to complete the signature move. The patent for this “method and means for creating anti-gravity illusion” was given in 1993 and nearly thirty years later, the dance move remains just as iconic! James Cameron With worldwide acclaimed movies like Titanic, Avatar, and The Terminator under his belt, it’s probably not surprising to hear that James Cameron is willing to do—or invent—whatever it takes to maintain his high standards of film production. The famed director 58

holds a number of patents and will often invent new technology to assist in the completion of his films if the technology he desires does not already exist. One of these inventions includes an underwater dolly device that helps to propel a person underwater while maintaining buoyancy. The apparatus makes it easier for a camera operator to film scenes underwater and allowed Cameron to capture various shots needed for the 1989 film, The Abyss. Steven Spielberg Yet another director who joined the world of inventions and patents is the one and only Steven Spielberg. While Cameron’s invention sought to help his camera operators, Spielbieg’s patent was made to help out his fellow directors. The device would allow users to edit a document while on-the-go or even add verbal annotations, similar to Google Documents today. Spielberg intended for the device to be used with scripts and although we now have similar technology on our smartphones, in 2011 the invention was groundbreaking. Paula Abdul Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul is known for her energetic performances and concerts. In addition to singing her heart out, Abdul is often seen dancing and moving around the stage throughout the duration

Lose FAT & INCHES Noninvasively

of her shows. This resulted in a unique need for a microphone that could keep up with her moves. In 2008, Abdul invented a microphone stand with a weighted, concave-shaped bottom that allowed the microphone to move around with her while always returning to an upright position similar to a free standing punching bag. Mark Twain Classic writer Samuel Langhorne Clemens was not just passionate about storytelling, he was also into hobby scrapbooking! Better known by his pen name Mark Twain, the scrapbook lover was frequently bothered by the standard scrapbooking process of hand-gluing all of his memories into the pages of his scrapbooks. This led Twain to invent a self-adhesive alternative in 1872 that worked much like an envelope. A scrapbooker only needed to wet a portion of the page to make the adhesive come to life. Bonus fun fact: In 1871, Twain patented an “improvement in adjustable and detachable straps for garments” which we still use today in the modern day bra strap clasp.

There is no doubt that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has completely changed our lives, from the way we travel to what we wear. And even though there is a vaccine ready to be distributed, a face mask is the safety measure that is going to stay for the long run. With that being said, unfortunately there is a significant amount of disposable masks being found all over the streets (and garbage). We came a long way with reusable bags, straws, and much more daily necessities that have become sustainable. And the face mask has now become the most important item we carry. And thanks to certain brands and companies, we can now purchase washable and reusable face masks. They are more environmental friendly and they come in different patterns, designs, and colors to fit your personal style and/or outfit.

There are a few brands in particular that donate a percentage of sales to either nurses, doctors, who are on the frontlines of COVID-19. Some donate masks to the workers as well. Burberry in particular donates all profits from the mask sales to the Burberry Foundation COVID-19 Community Fund that supports communities impacted by the pandemic worldwide. Stella McCartney’s Italian-made face mask, is made with organic cotton. For every purchased mask, the designer has committed to planting a tree in partnership with Conservation International. Last, but certainly not least, for each mask purchased, the brand Free People will donate one of their masks to people fighting for different social and health causes such as racial injustice, immigration, and the prevention of COVID-19 spread in Guatemala.

“THE IDEA OF ALTERING OUR DNA IS A LITTLE BIT (OR PERHAPS A LOT) SCARY. THANKFULLY, MRNA DOESN’T DO THAT.” Summary 1. Q. Should I get the vaccine? A. Yes 2. Q. Does it matter which one? A. Probably not 3. Q. What side effects can I expect? A. You will likely get a sore arm for a day or two and also be more tired than usual for a day or two. There are other, rarer side effects which can occur but which are less likely. For more, read on.

It hard to believe that we have a vaccine for a newly discovered infectious disease available in less than a year. This is mostly because, that’s not what happened. The story of the COVID-19 vaccine is like the tale of the artist who becomes an overnight success, who in actual fact was working their tail off for about a decade before they were “discovered” by the mainstream. While many scientists were worried that the next global pandemic would be an influenza (flu) virus, a few smart researchers perked up their ears and reached for their test tubes when the first deadly coronavirus called SARS appeared in 2002. These scientists really got cracking when another deadly coronavirus, MERS, made its debut in 2012. While the rest of us were leading our normal, happy lives, they were getting ready for “the big one.” Scientific papers with titles such as “Molecular Basis of Coronavirus Virulence and Vaccine Development” and “Antibodies and Vaccines Against Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus” ran in obscure journals in the years before COVID-19 existed. Besides these, other scientists were hard at work on the mRNA technology on which the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are based. Which brings us to the mRNA technology and the fact that two coronavirus vaccines are the first to utilize this platform. mRNA sounds an awful lot like DNA and our DNA is the basic building block for what makes each of us unique and special. The idea of altering

our DNA is a little bit (or perhaps a lot) scary. Thankfully, mRNA doesn’t do that. mRNA is the stuff that DNA makes to give instructions to cells on how to make the things we need. Think of mRNA like middle managers of our bodies. The big boss, DNA, tells the managers, mRNA, what instructions to give to the actual builders. The mRNA cannot tell the big boss what to do—information just doesn’t flow that way in our bodies. So, mRNA tells our cells to make a version of the coronavirus spike protein which is harmless without the rest of the coronavirus behind it. Our immune systems learn to respond to the spike, and with 94-95% effectiveness, do that after two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. mRNA is short lived if not deep frozen and so, with a body temp of around 98oF, it’s soon gone and whatever things made you wonderful or not so wonderful are unchanged. The other vaccines, like AstraZeneca and Johnson and Johnson, which will hopefully be effective, are based on older technology and odds are, you’ve already had several other similar vaccines in your life. So, back to question #3 and the dreaded vaccine side effects. I find myself typing this about 40 hours away from getting my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. After my first shot about three weeks ago, I wound up with a sore arm for two days and impressive fatigue for about six hours. I had to take a nap and then felt better. Others have described nothing happening after the first shot and some vaccine recipients have had headaches, nausea, or muscle aches. The symptoms are reported to

be a bit worse with the second shot, but don’t usually last more than 48 hours. I was actually relieved when I reacted to the vaccine—it meant my immune system recognized a potential invader and got to work making antibodies that would protect me if and when the real coronavirus showed up. There are people who have a more severe reaction, called anaphylaxis, which is why we have to be monitored for 15 minutes after taking the vaccine. The odds of this happening are about 1 in 100,000 to 200,000 people. That’s probably the same as your odds of being struck by lightening if you live in Florida. However, with personnel ready to give you medication to treat the anaphylaxis at the vaccine administration sites, if you should be particularly unlucky, you will survive this reaction and just have a bad day. I can’t say the same for the lightening or for COVID-19. So, when it is offered to you, please get your vaccine.

ORLANDO’S DOCTORS OF THE YEAR

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s Doctors of the Year’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.

DR. JONATHAN HIGGINS Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute Dr. Jonathan Higgins is the founding member of the Vascular Surgery group at the Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute. Dr. Higgins has practiced in the greater Orlando area since 2013 and is a trusted name in the specialty of vascular surgery. His patients like the fact that he gets great results and explains their procedures in a way that they can understand. He is known by his colleagues as being expert in his decision making, easily approachable and technically proficient. The leadership at the Orlando Health Heart Institute recognized these qualities and recruited him to help lay the foundation for the creation of the Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute. Dr. Higgins joined the Orlando Health Heart Institute in October of 2018 with the goal of creating an integrated practice unit that provides collaborative, coordinated and comprehensive vascular care for patients. When he first moved to Orlando, he noticed that the vascular surgery care was fragmented and poorly coordinated. Patients would be seen by a cardiologist and a vascular surgeon for the same problem and yet there was limited to no communication. The other thing that he noticed was that very little vascular surgery was offered at the smaller outlying hospitals, which meant that patients and their families would have the inconvenience of travelling for basic procedures. The Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute provides patients with the opportunity to receive comprehensive Vascular care that is conveniently located close to home at one of our many locations across Central Florida. With a panel of experts from the specialties

of Cardiothoracic surgery, Cardiology and Vascular surgery patients receive care that is multidisciplinary and provided by a group of physicians that collaborate and communicate about the patient care plan. Dr. Jonathan Higgins sees patients primarily at the Ocoee location at Orlando Health Central Hospital. He practices the full breadth of vascular surgery from abdominal aortic aneurysm repair to the management of varicose veins, with a special focus on dialysis access and limb salvage procedures. His approach is to involve the patient and their families in the development of a care plan that is customized for the patient. Other team members of the Vascular Surgery group include Dr. Mohammad Abbasi and Dr. Edgar Guzman that see patients primarily at the downtown location of the Orlando Health Heart and Vascular Institute. Additionally, Drs. Robert Winter and Kendrix Adcock who have been a part of the Central Florida Medical community for years continue to practice in the Maitland and Lake Mary region. The newest member of the team is Dr. Laith Al-Balbissi who practices primarily in the Dr. Phillips area. To book an appointment to see Dr. Higgins or any of the Vascular surgeons at the Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute please call 407 539 2100 or find them online at orlandohealth.com

LY T. NGUYEN, M.D. Eye Florida

| Eye Physician and Surgeon

Dr. Ly Nguyen is a board-certified ophthalmologist that specializes in cataract, oculoplastic surgeries, and facial rejuvenation procedures. She is an internationally recognized doctor, author, speaker and mentor to her community. She recently shared with us a few stories in life in her path to becoming a healer, surgeon, and community mentor. Some say that necessity is the mother of all inventions. As a young girl in the bleak Hong Kong refugee camp in the 1980s, Dr Nguyen wanted a set of earrings like the older girls. However, with no money and no places to get her ears pierced, she took it upon herself to follow her curiosity and created a set of original earrings of her own. She removed mattress coil springs from her sleeping cot and clipped these to her earlobes. As she reflects now with a smile, “not exactly the most fashionable pair but it was what I had then!” Over the course of next few weeks she slowly pierced her own ears with these springs. It was what she called her first small step in her future career as a surgeon. After attending Brown University for her undergraduate studies, Dr. Nguyen completed her medical training at the John A Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai’i. Under the tutelage of her mentor, the late Dr. Jorge Camara, she completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute. She cultivated a deep sense of empathy and compassion for her patients through the variety of cases she encountered during her rotations. Two of the most memorable surgeries that Dr. Nguyen performed provide a glimpse into her never waning desire to make a positive impact in her patients’ lives. While in her General Surgery internship, she had a patient with gangrene of his leg that had severe infections. Without further medical attention he could have die due to the septic shock. Dr. Nguyen and her team’s only option then was to amputate a portion of this patient’s leg to save his life. It was a gut wrenching and emotional experience to save his life but at the same time, his life would be changed forever. It was a lesson in compassion and resiliency. Years later, while in private practice at Eye Florida, a young mother came to see Dr. Nguyen regarding her loss of vision. She was diagnosed with mature cataract secondary to uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Due to the Special Promotional Feature

delays and long battles with her insurance carrier to get her surgery approved, by the time she met with Dr Nguyen, she was legally blind in both eyes. After Dr. Nguyen took on her case and performed the complex cataract surgery, this mother’s response at the post-operative appointment was filled with joy and gratitude. She has not seen the face of her teenage son since the onset of her cataracts a few years earlier. With tears of joy this young mother expressed to Dr. Nguyen, “The last time I saw my son he was tiny and now he is so tall and grown up!” It was inspiring to be able to give this mother her sight back and for her to see the world in its beauty once again. Dr Nguyen is always honing and enhancing her skills as an eye surgeon to deliver the best possible care to her patients. Helping her patients see clearly is but one way she gives back to the community. When she is not practicing medicine, she sets out to shape the next generation of ophthalmologist. Dr Nguyen has published many peer-reviewed articles in prominent medical journals including the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Archives of Ophthalmology. She contributes as a board member for the Orlando Health St. Cloud Board of Trustee, and the An Bang Professional organization. Two of her University of Central Florida School of Medicine mentees were recently selected to present a research paper at the Women in Ophthalmology Annual Meeting 2020 titled, “Postoperative outcome of cataract surgery with history of diabetes mellitus and socioeconomic status.”

Writing and sharing her knowledge with her community has been a lifelong passion. One of her favorite author and contemporary of Vietnamese heritage is Viet Thanh Nguyen. Dr Nguyen’s lifelong passion-project is to document and share her family’s journey out of Vietnam, through Hong Kong’s refugee camp and finally, immigrating to America. Dr. Nguyen recalls her childhood struggles and offers this insight, “These memories are stories of where we came from. These are important lessons of hope, determination, and hard work... all necessary to overcome life’s challenges and to achieve success in the wonderful country we live in.” Credits: Article written by B. AVI BHANDARY, MD Mana Spine

Endoscopic Spine Surgery | Interventional Pain Medicine Offering his professional commitment and faith in operating skills as a bridge for patients suffering from back pain has always been a driving force for Dr. Avi Bhandary. Building that bridge began in 2015 with the purpose of giving patients suffering from pain the opportunity to reach the future they hoped for. Tasked with curating the space to practice a brand of medicine that best represents the needs of patients today. Dr. Bhandary embraced the word Mana, derived from Polynesian culture, Mana described an energy that permeates the universe. Embracing that energy, Mana Spine was developed with the enduring capacity required to establish your own brand of exceptionalism. In healthcare, pressure and urgency are required to make great choices. Solo physician medical practices were vanishing from the free market at a historic pace long before 2015. Those seeking spine care were met with more information and engaging marketing but found themselves with less options and the same outcomes. In the medical profession, patients and Spine specialists work together in avoiding the consequential choices of the past, chronic opioid therapy, invasive spine surgeries or both. Dr. Bhandary believes the biggest choice facing patients and physicians in today’s market is the actual system in which care is provided. In creating Mana Spine, Dr. Bhandary saw an opportunity to confront the challenges posed by the system and restore the patient-doctor relationship. In 2016, a simple meeting with renowned Endoscopic Spine Surgeon, Dr. Marion McMillan was followed by a momentous friendship. Dr. Bhandary has been traveling to

Synergy Spine Center in Seneca, South Carolina, and training under Dr. McMillan since 2017. The two physicians developed a medical patent focused on a system for visualization of surgical images for the purpose of provider and patient education. As time passes, the free market for independent physicians continues to fade. The institutionalization of patient care by larger competitors has led surgical outcomes and free-market competition to stagnate while healthcare costs predictably skyrocketed. Simultaneously, innovative spine treatment options emerged onto the medical scene and brought Dr. Bhandary’s vision into focus. “Through the diagnostic accuracy of Interventional Pain procedures and motion sparing nature of Endoscopic Spine surgery, along with Basivertebral nerve ablation, options for spine care are the best they have been, and the future is bright. Mana Spine needed to represent the possibility of the moment and the future of what patient’s need from their physicians and these words tell that story.” - Avi Bhandary, MD This year, through a partnership with the premier brand of direct care, Dr. Bhandary hopes to expand patient coverage to Spine specialists and provide broader access to innovative spine treatment options far beyond the City Beautiful. Primarily operating out of Orlando, Dr. Bhandary continues to build an Endoscopic Spine program at Mana Spine. Treatment options that target different pain generators within the spine without having to restructure the spine is his primary focus. Armstrong Foundation for Premature Babies and the JCC of Greater Orlando Board of Directors. Dr. Chaet was instrumental in forming Kids Docs, an association comprised of Florida’s most respected pediatric subspecialists – those who care for the special medical and surgical needs of children. In 2015 Dr. Chaet co-founded the Integrated Independent Physicians Network (IPN) to provide resources and tools for independent physicians to survive and thrive in our ever changing healthcare environment. He states “With a national trend of physicians becoming employees, we sought to optimize the potential of those who chose the independent path”. He believes that the DNA of the independent physician model is all about the physician/patient relationship and doesn’t see a reason to shift that focus. From the beginning, he saw IPN as a means for physician support to allow them to better meet the needs of patients.

“IPN has had great success working with the payers on value-based and shared savings programs. Our physicians practice high quality medicine and utilize a network of outpatient facilities. Through the judicious use of these independentlyowned, high-quality entities, IPN physicians have demonstrated that healthcare delivery can be both top box in medical outcomes and patient satisfaction while being economically sound,” he said. Dr. Chaet recognized what the commercial payers have known for decades that when a group of physicians get together with a plan, the insurance companies “win”. Now physicians and patients can benefit from the winning formula as well. “The costs of medical care have steadily grown while the quality has been stagnant. The network that our physicians have built is designed to improve patient care and

outcomes, while avoiding unnecessary emergency room or hospital visits. Our outpatient ancillary care facilities and urgent care centers direct those who need hospital level acuity of care to the hospitals, while keeping the remainder, and majority, of patients under the care of their own physicians”, he emphasized. Mark Chaet reminds us that the entire system of healthcare in the U.S. depends on well-trained and dedicated caregivers. “Decades of experience supports the notion that opportunities for these individuals should include both hospital-based jobs and independent practice. The media has made a big deal about how being the most expensive healthcare system in the world hasn’t made us the best in the world. I firmly believe that U.S. medical care is the best in the world – and we have the tools to make it more economically sound. Organizations such as IPN are poised to do just that.” Under Dr. Chaet’s leadership, the IPN organization has successfully implemented value-based programs with many commercial and Medicare payers. IPN continues to grow and expand their services, and will introduce early 2021, Alliance Health, a direct-to-employer health benefits program for small to medium sized employers in its 12 county service area. Dr. Chaet believes that by providing an alternative to high-cost care, independent physicians and independent ancillary providers can impact both overall healthcare costs and patient out-of-pocket costs. DR. SOKONVISET UONG Board Certified Optometric Physician

My name is Dr. Sokonviset Uong. I was born in Cambodia. My family and I came to the United States as refugees. While most kids spent their first ten years focusing on education, I tried to do whatever I can to help my family survive the horrific civil war. We came to the United States in 1982 with the help from our sponsors. I started school at about 10 years old without knowing any English, not even the alphabet. I was struggling in school for three to four years. I didn’t get to enjoy my summer because I had to go to summer school three consecutive years. I didn’t excel until I started eighth grade. School started to get easier so it allowed me time to do things that I was really passionate about such as joining the soccer and academic team.

to become an optometrist. I went on to get my bachelor degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Afterwards, I got accepted to Nova Southeastern University for my optometry school. With lots of dedication and perseverance, I graduated and received my doctor of optometry degree in 2001.

My parents always made an appointment for me to see the eye doctor every year. I got more and more fascinated about the eyes every time I talk to my optometrist. From there on I set my mind

As doctor, owner, and president of Uong Eye Care, my number one priority is to help all my patients solve their problems and improve their daily activities.

I started working commercially after graduation so I can pay my student loans. After 6 years of commercial practice, I didn’t feel like I was utilizing the best of my knowledge to help my patients. In late 2007, I decided to take a risk in opening up my own practice. I started out cold and had to work really hard to maintain the practice.

LY T. NGUYEN, M.D. Eye Florida | Eye Physician and Surgeon Dr. Due to the

Special Promotional Feature

delays and long battles with her insurance carrier to get her surgery approved, by the time she met with Dr Nguyen, she was legally blind in both eyes. Two of her University of Central Florida School of Medicine mentees were recently selected to present a research paper at the Women in Ophthalmology Annual Meeting 2020 titled, “Postoperative outcome of cataract surgery with history of diabetes mellitus and socioeconomic status.” Writing and sharing her knowledge with her community has been a lifelong passion. These are important lessons of hope, determination, and hard work... all necessary to overcome life’s challenges and to achieve success in the wonderful country we live in.”

CHIRAG J. PATEL, MD, FACS

Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Ophthalmologist

With roots in the small central Florida town of Fruitland Park, Chirag J. Patel, MD, FACS, developed a passion for people and the community at an early age. Chirag, a first-generation Indian-American, learned life’s most important lessons from his parents, who operated a local business in the small town. Day in and day out, Chirag admired his father’s ability to connect with his customers, neighbors, and community; his father still values those relationships to this day. The ability to help people and develop long-lasting relationships was a strong impetus for Chirag’s pursuit of medicine. Dr. Patel has always had a thirst for knowledge and excelled academically. Upon graduating as Valedictorian of Leesburg High School, Chirag continued his journey at the University of Florida. During his undergraduate tenure, Chirag maintained leadership positions in many organizations, received many awards, such as the Anderson Scholar for academic excellence, and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Sciences with a concentration in Biochemistry. At the University of Florida, College of

Medicine, Chirag then spent four rigorous years studying the human body and the art of healing. During this time, the doctor-to-be decided to pursue residency training in Ophthalmology, a highly selective specialty in which only 480 physicians are chosen nationally each year. Upon graduation with an M.D. degree from the University of Florida, Chirag moved to New York City to begin postgraduate residency training. He spent his first year at Richmond University Medical Center completing an internship in Internal Medicine. During this year, Dr. Patel gained valuable experience treating patients in the inpatient and critical care setting with all types of medical conditions such as Diabetes, Hypertension, and Heart Disease. Dr. Patel then spent the next three years at the prestigious Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan receiving top-notch training in Ophthalmology. During his residency, Chirag had the privilege of learning under some of the leaders in the field. During his final year of residency, Chirag served as Chief Resident

and received an Ophthalmology Recognition Award from the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Patel then decided to pursue an additional year of Fellowship training in Medical Retina and Research at the University of Florida – Jacksonville. Back in his home state, Chirag gained expertise in the treatment and diagnosis of retinal diseases, participated in nationally recognized clinical trials, such as DRCR.net and AREDS, published in peer-reviewed journals, and actively taught residents clinical and surgical concepts in Ophthalmology. Dr. Patel remained at the University of Florida-Jacksonville thereafter as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Comprehensive Ophthalmology. Dr. Patel has since founded Lake Nona Ophthalmology to provide a patient-first practice based on compassion, community, and cutting-edge care. Dr. Patel is married to his college sweetheart, Krishma, and has two beautiful children. He enjoys friends, family, photography, running, and sports, especially the Gators.
