Welcome It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to our Centenary Concert in the National Concert Hall on behalf of St. Gerard’s Junior and Senior School. The Centenary Concert encompasses a century of music, choir and drama in our school. In St. Gerard’s, our education of excellence seeks to nurture in our students an appreciation of our artistic and cultural heritage and tonight we will celebrate our love of music and performance as an integral part of life in our school. Our Concert this evening showcases the captivating and magical talents of our students, both past and present, here in this prestigious auditorium. Music has and will continue to be a vibrant part of our school’s culture and undoubtedly our founder, John James, would be proud to witness the abundance of talent before us this evening, as indeed we are! St. Gerard’s School has been fortunate throughout its history to have had talented teachers and educators of music, performance and drama. Tonight we wish to thank in particular our Producer and Musical Director, Ms. Jackie Olohan, whose vision has inspired this Centenary Concert. We are also most grateful to Ms. Diane Owens, Senior School Musical Director, together with our staff teams in both the Junior and Senior School for their continuous encouragement, commitment and dedication. We trust you will enjoy this special evening celebrating a century of music, song and dance in St. Gerard’s School.

Tom Geraghty Deirdre Farrell Headmaster Headmistress

Putting it simply, music is the arrangement of sounds in a particular order that elicits an emotional response from the listener. There is no one metric that can measure our personal, spiritual and emotional development from regular exposure to it. Music roots us in our culture and in many ways teaches us what it means to be human. Music and St. Gerard’s are inextricably linked and its fundamental presence in our school lives reinforces the unique sense of community we have fostered here over the last hundred years. The Centenary Concert that Ms. Jackie Curran Olohan and Ms. Diane Owens have organised is a miracle of sorts. There will be over 200 pupils, past and present, junior and senior, along with a large cast of teachers, performing for you in this beautiful auditorium this evening, displaying a vast repertoire of songs that have been polished to perfection. One can only imagine how many sleepless nights the main organisers of this wonderful event have had and we thank them wholeheartedly for their commitment and dedication to music at St. Gerard’s. St. Gerard’s ardently encourages the development of students’ musical talent throughout the school year during numerous religious celebrations and events. Everything ranging from individual displays of talent that are showcased annually in the Junior School Hall during the Music Festival, Summer Concert and T.Y Musical, to the enhancing of whole-school liturgical events like St. Gerard’s Day and the Carol Service. These moments of togetherness we will remember most vividly decades after we have left school. The joy I feel whenever I am granted the opportunity to perform on stage in any way is immeasurable and I will forever be thankful to St. Gerard’s for helping me discover this life long passion. To borrow from Nietzsche, “without music, life would be a mistake”.

Music in St. G erard ’ s Junior School

Hannah Duffy | Standard 6

The famous musical duo of Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers are responsible for a number of popular musicals, one of their most famous shows opening with the line “the hills are alive with the sound of music”. Luckily for us in St. Gerard’s Junior School we have the dynamic musical duo of Ms. Olohan and Ms. Broxson who ensure that the corridors of St. Gerard’s are alive with the sound of music every day! Each week, from Junior Infants to Standard 6, Ms. Olohan and Ms. Broxson teach our music classes in a lively, interactive and fun way. From singing to playing instruments, and from percussion to learning musical theory, no class is ever the same. In September, we were very lucky to open a beautiful new Artzone in the Junior School - which is the hub of our musical education. At any time of the day you will see us all having musical fun, playing the piano, trying out different instruments or just singing together. You may also walk past and hear our beautiful Choirs rehearsing songs for a Show or hymns for the Carol Service, Confirmation or First Holy Communion. Music is simply an integral part of life in the Junior School and not a day passes that we are not uplifted by music. To celebrate our school’s 100th anniversary we are lucky enough to perform in the National Concert Hall. This is an opportunity of a lifetime and will no doubt be a treasured memory for us of our time in St. Gerard’s Junior School.

OUR SHINING ALMA MATER Words and music by Phil Coulter. (May 2005). Proudly on a Wicklow hill, St. Gerard’s stands, like a beacon. Sending forth a shining light, The flame of learning, burning bright. You set us on a path for life, Prepared for all that lies before us. In defeat or victory, We’ll be the best that we can be.

Refrain St. Gerard’s, St. Gerard’s, We’re faithful, strong and true, Our shining Alma Mater, We’ll remember you. St. Gerard’s, St. Gerard’s. God bless the green and blue. Our shining Alma Mater. We’ll be true to you.
