Junior School

How the year has flown! And what an action-packed year of learning, events and fun it has been. But now the busy whirlwind of activity is over and the long sunny days of summer beckon us forward – and so it is time to take a moment to reflect on the year gone by and to look to the future. As always, from September to June our school was a hive of industry. To list all of the activities would take a book – but just some of the highlights of the year included: our nativity play and Carol Service, the Talent Show, “The Wizard of Oz”, the Student Council, the Green Schools Committee, Write-A-Book, the Std. 6 Science Fair, Std. 4 in the RDS Young Scientist Exhibition, Std. 5 at Robotics in Galway, sacramental moments of First Communion and Confirmation, matches won and matches lost, Skiing in Italy, school tours, Sports & Prize day.........and the year ended on a real high with the Junior School being crowned Winner of the DunLaoghaire/Rathdown Tidy Schools Competition! All this and teaching and learning too! One unusual but memorable aspect of the year gone by was – the weather! For the first time in 20 years, we did not climb Sugarloaf on St. Gerard’s day! Storm Ophelia saw to that - with the school closed for two days due to the exceptional weather warning! Thankfully the hurricane passed with just one tree down on campus! And then in early March, we could hardly believe it when the deep snows of Winter came and school had to close for three days! But what joy the snow brought. The children had fun-filled days of wrapping up warm and building snowmen, tobogganing, having snowball fights and then in to thaw out by the fire. The snow brought out the inner child in all of us – but we were all happy to return to normality after the unexpected holiday! As a result of the snow, we began school at 8.30am in the lead up to Easter to make up for lost time. And it was a result of this that we have decided that the early start is a great way to begin the day - when the children are bright and alert and ready for learning. So our new academic year will see the school day beginning at 8.30am! Let’s see how it goes! Another major change next year will be that three of our year groups will be in “prefabs”. However, prefabs are not what they used to be! They are now modern, warm, stand-alone classrooms - fully equipped with white-boards, toilet facilities and all of the necessary educational tools and equipment. And, of course, the short term inconvenience of not having all of the Junior School under one roof will be well worth it when, for the academic year 2019/2020, we will have a brand new wing on our Junior School! The new space will comprise a large corner-suite library which will put reading and literature at the centre of our school’s activities. It will also have an Arts Zone, and a Collaboration Lab to reflect the latest educational innovations – of team learning, projectbased learning, discovery learning and a “maker-space” to support and encourage STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The new building will also have a

second open staircase which will link the ground floor with the upper floor – hence enhancing the connectivity of our Junior School building and reflecting our community spirit in the architecture. After some initial difficulties with acoustics (which have now been rectified), our Solar Dome will be fully operational for the new school year. All classes will have some lessons each week in our “outdoor classroom” – be it horticulture, creative writing, science or quiet time for prayer and reflection. It is a wonderful and very different space – do take time to visit! Certainly an innovative and interesting time ahead for education in our school! So time now to recharge the batteries in order that we are all ready for the exciting year ahead. Before closing, I would like to sincerely thank all those who make our school community the caring and vibrant centre of learning that it is. Firstly, to you the parents, thank you for your kindness and support and above all for entrusting your children to our care and to our vision of education. I would particularly like to thank our Library Team who not only ran our Junior School library with efficiency and order but also, at year end, packed every book into boxes (as our Library and Multipurpose room will be a classroom next year!), carefully catalogued each item and painstakingly worked to ensure that books will be available to each class next year – albeit in their classroom instead of in the Library! Our Gardening Team worked with Std. 4 and planted an amazing biodiversity hedge which will ensure the safety and longevity of our native wild life for decades to come. Another amazing team of Mums painted wonderful back-drops, made incredible costumes and face-painted hundreds of children for our Christmas and Summer plays; and our wonderful In-House Committee made endless cups of tea and coffee to celebrate First Communion and Confirmation and ran our Bar-B-Q on Tennis night. I also thank the Junior School staff team who are the heart of our school and who ensure that our school is a vibrant, lifeaffirming, and learning-filled community. And finally of course I thank our wonderful boys and girls – who are the life and very soul of our school and who are a joy to be around day in day out. I continually remind myself how blessed I am to work in such a collaborative, caring and happy school community. I wish you all a very happy Summertime – filled with memorable moments with your wonderful children.

GREENSCHOOLS

Gr

ls o o h c e e ns

This term has been jam-packed with Greenschool and gardening events. Std 4 did a super job planting their biodiversity hedgerow which is located just behind the Dome. This consists of all different kinds of trees including evergreens and whips. Quite recently we also had our Spring Clean on the School Campus. Each class was allocated a certain area of the school to clean and tidy and the school looked better than ever afterwards.

After a very successful term, the Greenschools Committee then had a very exciting end to the year. On 23rd May we received our 5th Greenflag for Biodiversity. And then on 30th May we could hardly believe it when we were awarded Tidy School Winners of 2018! What an achievement!

The Montessori class went to Wooly Wards Farm on 25th May. They were amazed by Chickens, Cows, Bulls, Goats, Lamas and Pigs. They got to hold rabbits, chicks and Llamas. The Thomas the Tank Engine Train brought them all around the farm and they also went on a pony ride. It was such a nice day and they ended with a lovely picnic at the farm.

All classes from Junior Infants to Std 6 took part in the Write a Book Competition again this year. This is one of our favourite events to take part in each year. Each student writes a book in English (and Std 6 also did an Irish book!) on any topic they wish. It was really great fun creating our own books. Ms. Byrne held an assembly in the Junior School Hall where all the authors got to read an extract from their winning book. The winners of the Write a Book Competition in each class were Jean McCluskey in Senior Infants, Luca Wejchert in Std 1, Jamie Lake in Std 2, Pearl Connolly in Std 3, Amber O’Donohoe in Std 4, Harry O’Leary in Std 5, Charlotte Finnegan Quirke and Laura Cullen in Std 6. This year for the Std 6 end of year production we did “The Wizard of Oz”. On the day of the show we were all very nervous but also buzzing with excitement. It was an extremely exciting night for everyone involved. The costumes and backdrop created by our amazing parents were fabulous. Everyone had a part to play – there were munchkins, mice, crows, owls, monkeys, emerald city girls and many more. All of our teachers spent hours making sure we all knew exactly what we were doing and it really showed on the night. No one forgot their lines or words to the songs although if they had, I’m sure it would have been fine. ter The Wizard of Oz made our Std 6 Final Farewell one to remember! repor

Each year for the last number of years, Std 4 and 5 go on their annual school trip to Carlingford Adventure Centre. It is always a great success and this year proved to be no different! It was an early start as the bus left St. Gerard’s at 7.30am. There was great excitement when they arrived at the Adventure Centre. The first activities were water based so everyone put on their wetsuits and got started. After a busy morning on the lake it was time for lunch, followed by an action packed afternoon on land. Come evening time, Std 4 boarded the bus to come back to St. Gerard’s while Std 5 prepared for their overnight stay with an exciting night walk. The next morning Std 5 went zip-lining before they left to head back to St. Gerard’s. Once again, the trip to Carlingford was a huge success and the children made some very fond memories of a very good trip!

This year’s annual Talent Show was postponed due to the snow but it was certainly worth the wait! On 14th March the hall, filled with parents and siblings, saw Std 4 and 5 perform their brilliant acts. The audience were entertained with singing, gymnastics, dancing and much more including all sorts of musical instruments. As usual, this special night could not have happened without the guiding hands of Ms. Carney, Ms. Olohan, Mrs. Murphy and Ms. Gleeson. During this sensational production, it was clear that the children had put a lot of time into practising and rehearsing. It was a memorable and enjoyable night for all involved.

Everyone had an absolutely fabulous day at Sports and Prize Day. We were all so excited - especially the new Std 6 Pupils and the younger classes as it was their very first Sports Day! The weather had its ups and downs – mainly up though! There was a delicious barbeque with mouth watering burgers and an ice-cream van which was my particular favourite on the day! Montessori, Junior and Senior Infants and Standard 1 kicked off the start line with their races and they all received a medal for taking part. Then there was Std 2 – Std 6. There were a number of different types of races but the most entertaining and fun to watch were definitely the sack race, three-legged race, egg and spoon, and partner obstacle. There was lots of falling and dropping but most importantly there was also a lot of laughter and fun! After the Junior School races ended we had time to relax, have some food and some fun with our friends. At 4.15pm we went to the Sports Hall for the Prize Giving Ceremony where everyone is credited for their diligence and hard work throughout the year. Std 6 were delighted with the awards they received. Special congratulations goes to Lily Curley, Henry Doyle and Ryan Murphy who were the Medal of Merit Winners for 2017/18. Well done to all in Std 6 and thank you to all the teachers and staff for giving up their time to make this truly fantastic day happen.

On April 20th the Standard 6 students made their Confirmation along with St. Kieran’s School in St. Fergal’s Church. There was so much effort put in to make it such a special day for everyone. Everybody worked exceptionally hard for the Enrolment Service, the Service of Light and of course the Confirmation itself. Our teachers did a great job preparing us for the day. During the Mass, beautiful songs were sung and lovely readings were read. After the Mass and receiving the sacrament of confirmation, everyone went back to the Junior School Hall for a delicious feast of finger food, cakes, teas and coffees. We would like to thank Ms. Rodgers, Ms. Maguire and Dr. Farrell for working extremely hard to prepare us for the day. We would also like to thank the In-House Committee for providing us with some scrumptious treats and a big thank you to our families for celebrating this very special day with us.

The long-awaited day had arrived. We had to meet at the airport at 5am. I got up at 3am! Everyone was very excited. We checked in our bags and headed through security and on to our gate and boarded the plane. Once we got to Italy and picked up our bags we took the bus to our hotel which took a couple of hours. We went to our rooms to get changed and then came back down for a table quiz. The skiing was great fun. Everyone got on well with their ski lessons and on the last day we had a great time on the slalom racing competition. We had different activities each night such as a trip on a skidoo, tobogganing, bowling and swimming. Each night for dinner we had a different Italian dish like pizza and pasta. We had a great time and everyone was very disappointed to be leaving Italy but we were also happy to be home to tell our parents all about the trip.

Family Tennis Evening

Tennis Evening Family Tennis Evening is played every year in our school. This year it was held on Monday 14th May and as always was a great night. There was a remarkable turnout from the Junior School classes this year with their parents and older siblings. The InHouse Committee provided us with an abundance of hotdogs, burgers, refreshments and tasty jellies. They always do a great job providing our refreshments with a warm smile! The Standard 1 and 2 final came down to the Brutons and the Costigans with Sean and Joey Costigan claiming the win. It was the turn of the McGoverns and Kellys in the Std 3 and 4 final with the McGoverns victorious in what was a very tight match! There were amazingly high standards in the Std 5 and 6 category with Nathan Lee and Josh Buckley competing in the final along with their Dads. It was a very close and exciting game with the Lees narrowly winning in the end in a great game of tennis. It has always been one of the best evenings of the year and one which we all look forward to annually. Sincere thanks as always to Julie for arranging the tennis evening and to all the other coaches who made the evening so enjoyable for everyone.

Everyone on the Gerard’s team played very well but we didn’t manage to clinch a win. The final was a very tight game between Michael’s A and Michael’s B. Michaels’s A just about managed to come out on top to win the tournament. Everyone had a great day and really enjoyed it!
