JUNIOR SCHOOL GAMES NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2015 HOCKEY On October 2nd we set off from school on a beautiful sunny day for our first ever away hockey match. We were all very excited on the bus to Castlepark School in Dalkey. We were split into groups so we all got to try different positions. Unfortunately we lost this time but can't wait for the next match. Grace Std. 2

Rugby was very eventful during the past month as we played in two blitz and one game. Two teams went over to Pres and came home with only one team losing against CBC. Gerard's played a blitz on home ground and we managed to beat Willow, Michael's and Pres but failed to defeat CBC . Willow Park came to us the next week. One team won in a 19-15 thriller but the other team gave everything but just didn't get the result! Shane Std.6

Hi, I am Sally. I came to St Gerard’s this year from Delgany NS. I’ve been playing hockey since 2 nd class. In Delgany I would only play once a week but I really like how in St. Gerard’s we play more. I found that extra training really improves our skills. What I like about St. Gerard’s is that all the girls play hockey. A few weeks ago we played our first match against Castlepark and we won. Last Friday we also took part in a hockey blitz in our school. There were 58 teams from all over Dublin taking part in this event. It was a great day out. Playing hockey has been very fun and I can’t wait for the rest of the hockey season. Sally Std. 6

RUGBY Nothing has ever made me feel so excited about getting out of my warm bed on a Saturday morning as a rugby match with my class mates. The happiness I feel when we win or when I score a try is fantastic. As of this moment we have only lost our first match. No team has beaten us after that. It makes me proud. Rugby is fun and I love it. Kristoffer Std. 3

ST. GERARD’S DAY This year on St. Gerard's Day, we climbed to the shoulder of the Sugarloaf. When it was time to go Std1 - Std6 lined up in the playground and waited to get on the bus. Once we were at the Sugarloaf we lined up behind our class teacher. Then we set up to the shoulder and down again. It took about 30 minutes to get up to the shoulder and down. When we were back at school we got crisps, Ribena and a chocolate bar. Later on at 7 o'clock we went to Mass in the sports hall. After mass we got to play on the Astro while Std.6 had a Ceile in the Junior School Hall. All parents went for the canteen for refreshments. At nine o'clock everyone went home. It was a great day out!! Ciara Std.4

CROSS COUNTRY St. Gerard’s Std 6 Cross Country Team left the school at around half ten. We were heading for Santry to run a 1000m race. We were nervous but a lot more excited. After we got off the bus and warmed ourselves up it was time for the girls’ race. They got a brilliant start although it was tough. The girls did amazing overall. Then it was time for our race. The beginning was tough like the girls race but we managed it. The further we ran, the harder it got but we all managed a sprint at the end. We were exhausted afterwards and went for a short walk. Then we headed home it was a brilliant day overall. Sean Std.6

SPORTS HERO 2015 was one of the best years of my life because I was reserve champion on a 5 year old pony in the Royal Dublin Horse Show. I was competing in the Side Saddle Competition. I was also National Pony Champion on my sixteen year old pony in Mullingar. It was a wonderful experience watching everyone cheering me on in my lap of honour, I was so delighted. Carragh Std.6

AIJS SOCCER We arrived at 8.30am in our football kit for the Aijs. There were two boys’ teams and a girls’ team. We warmed up and did some drills for the big day. It hit 9.00am and all teams got into position and with the blow of the whistle it had started, I was on the B division. We first played St. Andrews and won, Then we had to play Wicklow Montessori and won. Then came Conleth’s and we drew. It was very annoying! We had a break between the matches but when it came to Willow A’s we were quite nervous but with hard work we made it a 1-0 victory. Then it can to the semi finals. We played Willow C’s and that went into penalties and with great saves from Max we won. On the pitch beside us, the A’s were scoring their way to victory and we ended up playing them in the final! We did very well but when it came to golden goal they scored. But at the end of the day St. Gerard’s won!! Karl Std. 6
