Drew Lynford, a furniture designer and builder living in Philadelphia, chats with Stardust about working with wood, clients, and inspiration.


STARDUST: Has woodworking become your primary focus? Is this a recent development in your life? DREW: Yeah, I’m trying to start my own company and my own furniture building and repair business. I’m still taking classes at Philadelphia Furniture Workshop in Germantown and working at the Academy of Natural Sciences fixing and building furniture. I’m reaching out and getting my own clients.

I have a love/hate relationship with cherry.

STARDUST: How is it working with clients? Do they tell you exactly what they want and what they’re looking for?

DREW: I wish they told me exactly what they wanted. [Laughter.] It would make things so much easier. Usually I meet with them to get an idea of the style they’re looking

for. I hammer out as much details in terms of the dimensions, and I try to make it out of really nice hard wood so I can build with all my own lumber and design everything myself. Even the screws and the glue, all of it is researched to the point where I know exactly what I’m looking for to get the result I want. And the customers love it and know the piece will last for fifty to a hundred years. STARDUST: When it comes to wood selection, do they give you any ideas or do you already have in mind which types of wood you want to work with on the piece? DREW: I have a general idea. I usually stick to local salvage trees, like walnuts or cherry. STARDUST: I noticed you use walnut a lot in your pieces, and I was wondering what draws you to it. DREW: I love walnut. I don’t know why in particular. It’s very easy to work and I like the finish on it. There’s a multitude of finishes you can use on it and they all come out really good. STARDUST: What attributes do you consider when evaluating and selecting a piece of wood for a project? Are you looking at multiple pieces until you find the right one? DREW: I was trained in furniture design, so I look for specific defects in the wood, and some of them I’ll highlight, and then I’ll look for defects that I can’t use. Wood is just so unpredictable. You’re constantly just working with the wood and figuring out where you can stretch it and where you can’t work around it.

Sometimes you need to buy a little extra stock and be okay with leaving some wood and moving forward. STARDUST: Back to working with clients. Do they give you creative license or do you have to be completely faithful to the original plan? DREW: I try to guide the client into making a decision that works for them, so they’ll end up with a functional yet an artistic piece. There’s nothing I hate more than woodworking that isn’t functional. STARDUST: Right. Nice to look at, but not functional in any way. DREW: Yeah. I mean, wood is strong. It’ll last a lifetime if you know how to build with it.

STARDUST: If walnut is the easiest for you to work with, what is the most difficult? DREW: I have a love/hate relationship with cherry. It’s gorgeous when you find the right board, but sometimes you don’t get the tone you want and it’s just very difficult to work. It’s a very dense, hard wood, and you can burn it really easily or it’ll chip out. It’s tough on your tools, and you constantly have to re-sharpen. I just did a piece where the table top was made out of curly maple, and that was my first experience with it. It was extremely difficult, just because there were so many surprises from that board that made me grow and also made me want to throw that piece out the window. [Laughter.] And I almost did. But the result was great. STARDUST: And it probably makes you appreciate it more when you’re done, because you went through that frustration to get there. DREW: Yeah, it makes me appreciate quality craftsmanship. It’s tough and it’s frustrating, but you really do gain a sense of appreciation for it when you’re done. It’s very satisfying. STARDUST: Do you have any specific influences you use for inspiration? Drew: I really like Nakashima. I guess that’s like a cliché for woodworkers, but I dig his style. I also went to the

Wharton Esherick Museum last summer and I thought that was great. His whole house is like a piece of art. The floors, the walls, the staircase, the desks, pretty much everything was built by hand. It’s just wild. And I really like Chippendale, which is weird, because I used to hate that kind of fancy crap. But now that kind of craftsmanship just blows my mind. I couldn’t imagine how people put together furniture in the fifteen hundreds. STARDUST: What made you change your mind about it? DREW: Going through classes at night, realizing I can’t make any of that stuff. [Laughter.] And they’re five hundred years old, which kind of blows my mind. STARDUST: At this point, it seems as though you’re just following your own interests and seeing what works out. DREW: Yeah. It’s great to build stuff for yourself and your friends because they’ll

always appreciate it. But when you work with clients, you really have to achieve their vision and not yours. I’m finding that I have to pay attention to what the client wants more than what I want and to be able to take a backseat so I can meet their goals.
