RAKU - PLAY WITH FIRE Raku is a Japanese-inspired firing process that creates spectacular results very rapidly. Lots of smoke, fun, spontaneity and surprises! We will also explore alternative firing techniques such as sawdust and saggar and various decorating techniques including terra sigillata, propane torching, smoking, etc. The emphasis is on glazing and firing; therefore, some experience with clay construction methods is desirable, though not mandatory. Even if you hire someone, you still need to understand the basic concepts of website design. As an experienced Spruill instructor, artist and software designer, the instructor will walk you through the basics of website design for artists so you can create your own site. The first session will focus on basic design principles, viewing examples of artists' sites and organizing your artwork for Website presentation. THE ART OF PAPER QUILLING Quilling is the centuries-old process of rolling and shaping strips of paper, which are then adhered to a surface to create a larger design. The class will introduce you to basic quilling techniques and will also cover paper selection, quilling tools, glue selection, and design considerations. The instructor will guide you in applying your new quilling skills to create a "takeaway" piece with a seasonal theme. A $20 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the time of the workshop, gets you all the materials and tools you need for the class and to continue your new craft at home. Quilling is a detailed activity that requires patience and some degree of manual dexterity as well as good eyesight. Bring your magnifiers or an Opti-Visor if needed. ADULT OIL PAINTING CLASS Learn basic and advanced oil painting techniques. This class is designed for students of all levels. You can work from photos, a still life setup that will be provided, your own sketches, imagination, or personal objects that you bring to class. We will discuss your goals and what your subject matter will be, during the first class. Special attention will be provided to students that are new to oil painting. Students with experience can start painting immediately. Students will work at their own pace. The instructor will provide helpful suggestions about technique, materials, and answer questions along the way. CAPTURING LANDSCAPES WITH PASTELS NEW This course is an ideal introduction to pastel for artist working on artists working on other mediums as well as a comprehensive class of all level of pastel painters seeking to broaden their skills. It addresses the fundamentals of capturing the three-dimensional world of nature on a two-dimensional surface, using the flexible and forgiving medium of pastels. Topics will include composition, perspective, values, color harmony, materials and equipment, underpainting techniques, layering, working with photographs versus plan air painting, and pastel mark-making techniques. Students will use traditional soft pastels and pan pastels. The instructor will work with each student individually in a hands-on step-by-step fashion making sure that everyone is working comfortably at their own pace. DRAWING THE FIGURE FROM PHOTOS Drawing the figure from a live model has classically been the preferred method, but working from photo reference can be equally helpful-and a bit simpler for the average aspiring artist! This class will give students a great opportunity to develop and improve their figure drawing skills without having to pay any model fees to do so! BASIC BLACKSMITHING This structured class is project based, and covers all the basics you need to develop a foundation in blacksmithing. Topics include building and maintaining a forge fire, and tool skills such as forging tapers, twisting, splitting, punching, and riveting steel. As the class progresses, each of these skills will be applied to specific step-by-step projects including tool making, wall hooks, leaf finials, and more. Examples can be found as far back as ancient Egyptian artifacts. The name derives from the Native American bead-weaving tradition of using the stitch to decorate the handles of gourds used for Native American peyote ceremonies.
