SPRUILL ARTS SUMMER CAMP 2023

It’s that time of year again for us to welcome eager kids and teens to Spruill Center for the Arts for our fabulous summer camp! Our center bursts with energy each summer as our halls fill with new faces and creative minds.

Our 10-week camp will span from May 30th through August 4th, excluding Memorial Day and July 4th. From Monday to Friday, our campers will work with our experienced instructors to explore different creative techniques based on that week’s theme. At the end of each week, on Friday afternoon, our campers will show off their masterpieces in our Hallway Gallery.

Carpool morning drop-off is from 9:00 am – 9:30 am, and carpool pick-up is from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm We offer Before-care and After-care services as an additional option for those in need of a more flexible schedule. Check out www.spruillarts.org for more details.

ARTS CAMPS (Ages 5–10)

We have so many exciting weekly themes for our campers to choose from this year. In these Arts Camps, you will learn about the elements of art and design in addition to how to use and take care of art materials. You will start each day with one teacher in the morning, break for lunch and outdoor time, then have class with a different teacher in the afternoon. Our goal is for campers to have fun and to help spark their creativity and love for the arts.

*SUMMERWEEN – WEEK 6

Don’t be scared! All of the monsters in this camp are friendly. This week you will be focusing on all things spooky: haunted houses, ghosts, vampires, spiders, and more! There will even be an opportunity to dress up in costumes and trick-or-treat!

STEAM WEEK – WEEK 7

Did you know that NASA used techniques from the art of origami to design folding solar panels for space? This fun camp is an exploration of the integration of art with science, technology, engineering, and math to show how creative thinking leads to innovation.

UNDER THE SEA – WEEK 8

The deepest parts of earth’s oceans have never been seen by human eyes, and yet we use our imagination to guess what kinds of creatures must live there. This week, you will create a variety of real and imaginary sea creatures and seascapes. There is so much to see under the sea!

TOY LAND – WEEK 9

To infinity and beyond! Have you ever wanted to create your own toy? In this camp, you will become a toy creator by combining crafts and industrial design. Projects include making functional fidget spinners, puppets, kaleidoscopes, board games and more!

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE – WEEK 10

Do you love dinosaurs? In this camp, instructors will use stories, songs, and games to teach you all about the Jurassic period. By blending science and art, you will create beautiful artwork featuring ancient creatures, fauna, and landscapes while using a variety of different mediums. ROAR!

Invisible ink! Secret messages! Clues and surprises! Spend the week developing your skills of observation. Attention to detail is key when either drawing from life or solving one of the mini mysteries hidden throughout this camp. Can you find them all?

ART OF LATIN AMERICA – WEEK 3

This week, we will celebrate the diverse variety of Latin American artists in our community. Lessons will include learning how to incorporate color and pattern into 2D artwork and how to use paper mâché to make piñatas!

STORY TIME – WEEK 4

What is your favorite book? What do you like most about it? The characters? The plot? Or maybe the illustrations? This week, you will create art based on your favorite book characters. You will also learn about book making, illustration, and cover design.

RAINBOW LIGHT – WEEK 5

Do you know how a rainbow is made or where all of those colors come from? Well, in this camp you will find out! Learn the science behind refracted light and prisms as you make your own rainbow-inspired art!

There is so much to discover in this big beautiful universe. The stars have inspired artists and great thinkers for centuries. This week, you will learn about the planets in our solar system and what lies beyond! There might even be an alien sighting!

STUDIO ARTS (Ages 11–14)

Spruill has designed an awesome selection of Studio Arts Camps for our older campers, ages 11-14. Each session is led by professional teaching artists who will provide a chance to experiment and refine techniques in a specific art discipline. Studio Arts Camps are perfect for strengthening art skills and learning new skills to express creative ideas.

JEWELRY MAKING AND METALSMITHING – WEEK 3

Learn the basic techniques of jewelry fabrication and metalsmithing by making pieces such as bracelets, pendants, and earrings. You will learn techniques of soldering, cold-connections, wire-wrapping, and more! Step-by-step demonstrations and instructions will lay the foundation for you to learn piercing with the jeweler’s saw, finishing, and forming metal sheet and wire.

CERAMICS INTENSIVE (2 WEEK CAMP) – WEEKS 3 & 4

One of our most popular camps is back again! This two-week intensive camp will help you gain an understanding of ceramics as a dynamic and expressive art form. Explore wheel throwing techniques, hand building basics, and surface treatment. From raw clay to finished, glazed work, you’ll develop many skills to create a variety of ceramic work.

PAPERMAKING AND BOOK BINDING – WEEK 4

Be a completely hands-on artist and create your own sketchbook! In this camp, you will create a book from scratch. You’ll explore how to create your own paper from recycled materials, and then learn how to bind those sheets into a creative book. Make every inch of your art your own!

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (4 DAY CAMP) – WEEK 1

At a time when anyone with a smartphone can be called a “photographer,” this camp teaches skills to take smartphone photography to the next level. The focus will be on shaping this generation of photographers to stand out amongst an increasingly crowded field and to develop an extraordinary way of looking through the lens. Smartphone required to take this course.

STORYBOARDING AND COMIC ILLUSTRATION (4 DAY CAMP) – WEEK 1

In this camp, you will learn how to draw storyboards and create comics within the drawing program Procreate. Discover how to make exciting stories, draw characters and backgrounds and study dynamic action poses for more impactful scenes. Dive into the world of creative storytelling! All equipment will be provided by Spruill.

PRINTMAKING – WEEK 2

Discover ancient drawing techniques that we still use today with our printmaking course. Printmaking is the foundation of many loved industries and can exercise your natural artistic abilities. You will be able to create your own prints using a variety of special techniques, such as monoprinting, cyanotype, and relief printing.

PAINT MASTER – WEEK 2

Paint Master Camp is a seriously fun exploration of creative applications and uncommon ways to express yourself using a variety of paints. Are you brave enough to embrace the challenge of painting from life? In this studio arts camp, you will learn the basics of making realistic still life paintings with brushes and non-conventional tools.

SEWTASTIC: SUSTAINABLE QUILTS AND STUFFED ANIMALS – WEEK 3

Give your favorites a new life with our environmentally conscious course. Flex your sewing talents while getting the opportunity to upcycle your best fabrics. In this camp, campers will work with donated fabrics and personally donated clothing to make amazing quilt projects and cute stuffed animals.

INTRO TO PROCREATE – WEEK 5

This camp will introduce you to the world of Procreate. You will learn how to create custom brushes, special drawing tips, and more! This is a beginner-level camp, where you will learn the general functions of Procreate and how to utilize its secret tools. All equipment will be provided by Spruill.

TRADITIONAL MEDIA DRAWING – WEEK 5

Looking to get introduced to new media? Take a look at our drawing course. In this camp, you will get the opportunity to work with traditional drawing mediums like charcoal, markers, colored pencils, and much more to create beautiful drawings.

FILM PRODUCTION – WEEK 5

Lights! Camera! Action! A lot goes into making a film that tells a good story. This camp is a great introduction to the fundamentals of filmmaking. You’ll work with your team to write, direct, shoot, and edit your film. No experience is necessary, and who knows – maybe you’ll discover that filmmaking is the career for you! A laptop and camera will be provided.

ANIMAL PORTRAITS (4 DAY CAMP) – WEEK 6

Can’t get enough of your furry, feathery, or scaly friends? In this camp, you will learn to capture the likeness of animals through a watercolor medium. This is a great option for our pet lovers, but also poses a bit of a challenge for watercolor enthusiasts; tasking them to capture movement and texture.

SCULPTURE BASICS (4 DAY CAMP) – WEEK 6

Gain hands-on experience in developing a variety of sculptural work in this new studio arts camp. You will learn about historical and modern sculptures as you explore techniques, tools, and materials for hand-building in three dimensions. Projects will include the use of air-dry clay, plaster, paper mâché, cardboard, wire and more!

ARTBOTICS – WEEK 7

Engineer and code a Birdbrain Technologies’ Hummingbird Bit that moves, lights up, and challenges you to be inventive. Design and decorate your robot using art, boxes, and recycled materials. Learn how to program a controller with LED’s, Motors, Sensors, and MakeCode, to design and craft a moving robot.

CHARACTER DESIGN – WEEK 7

Who knows what actually goes into creating memorable and unique characters for comics, animation, or video games? Well in this camp, that’s exactly what you will learn! By understanding a character and the universe that they live in, you will be able to create detailed character studies, with key poses and expressions, just like the pros do!

WATERCOLOR – WEEK 8

Watercolor painting is noted by its translucent and subtly emotive artistic expression. This camp teaches you to use basic watercolor materials and tools to portray your own imagination and inspiration. You will choose color schemes, design compositions and apply techniques to create a variety of projects.

THE ART OF ENGINEERING – WEEK 8

Build 2D & 3D structures out of paper, chips and poster board. Discover and construct a range of movable designs using craft materials. Tinker with linkages, flanges, cams and paper engineering. Build bridges, roller coasters, mascots, moving toys, and more…

FASHION ILLUSTRATION – WEEK 9

Have fun exploring your unique design style as you learn the basics of fashion design and illustration! In this camp, you will learn to draw elongated fashion figures, illustrate your own signature clothing and accessories, and create unique illustrations that bring your fashion collection to life! This camp is a great companion to our Sewing for Fashion camp.

MAKING STOP MOTION VIDEOS – WEEK 9

You may already know about Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but did you also know that The Lego Movie was made with stop-motion animation? Use toys, clay, and other objects to create a short video using classic stop-motion techniques. You are encouraged to use your own cell phone to take and edit your stop motion videos, but you will also have access to Spruill’s lighting equipment, iPads, and editing software.

In this camp, you will learn how to create a pattern based on your body type, and the basics of how to uses a sewing machine to make your creations. Plan on leaving with some ready-to-wear fashion pieces at the end of the week, and have the knowledge to continue creating on your own!

PAINT MASTER (STILL LIVES) – WEEK 10

Paint Master Camp is a seriously fun exploration of creative applications and uncommon ways to express yourself using a variety of paints. RESIN ART – WEEK 10

Resin is a broad media that you can use to create virtually anything. Have you ever wanted to make your own jar or maybe a toy? Or maybe you want to encapsulate something to keep forever? Either way, resin is the way to go. In this camp, you will work with a variety of resin molds to introduce yourself to the medium and open the resin door to endless possibilities.

Become a triple threat by learning to sing, dance, and act! Talented professionals will guide students through various dance styles, singing classes, scene study and so much more as they learn various songs and scenes from a musical. Students will work together to create the themed showcase to be performed for family and friends at the end of the week.

ASPIRING ACTORS CAMP Learn to create characters and tell stories! This camp is designed to encourage self-confidence onstage and serves as an introduction to the fundamentals of acting technique. Classes for the week include improv, comedy, monologues, scene work, and acting games. Aspiring Actors Camp culminates in a themed showcase for friends and family to show off the students’ newfound talents!

ACTING INTENSIVE:

Students hone techniques to prepare them to tackle a role onstage. Students will work with professional actors to broaden their repertoire and sharpen their technique. Performance pieces will be rehearsed throughout the week and culminate in an exciting showcase for friends and family. All levels of experience welcome.

MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE

Become part of a company! This one-week intensive is the full experience. In addition to auditioning, rehearsing, and performing in their own full show, students will take in-depth classes in all aspects of musical theatre: dance technique & styles, voice & music, and acting. At the end of the week, students will put on a musical showcase in the Stage Door Theatre for the community! All levels of experience welcome.

ELEMENTS OF THEATRE (AGES 12-18)

This camp is for the students who love to know what goes on behind the scenes! In Elements of Theatre, students will learn all about what goes into the making of a theatrical production as we put up our summer play: Puffs or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Classes include scenic design, costuming, makeup, lighting, sound, and props. With guidance from our professional faculty, students will work on their own project throughout the week putting together all the technical aspects of their very own show.

Students interested in future leadership positions in technical theatre for Stage Door’s Performing Arts Academy and Sr Company are highly encouraged to participate in this camp.
