CERAMICS Note: Fees shown include mandatory Lab and/or Materials Fees, if any. RAKU - PLAY WITH FIRE Raku is a Japanese-inspired firing process that creates spectacular results very rapidly. Lots of smoke, fun, spontaneity and surprises! We will also explore alternative firing techniques such as sawdust and saggar and various decorating techniques including terra sigillata, propane torching, smoking, etc. The emphasis is on glazing and firing; therefore, some experience with clay construction methods is desirable, though not mandatory. DECORATIVE ARTS Note: Fees shown include mandatory Lab and/or Materials Fees, if any. PAPER QUILLING: BASICS AND BEYOND Quilling is the centuries-old process of rolling and shaping strips of paper, which are then used to create a larger design. Quilling has many uses for creating cards, gifts and artwork. In this course, you'll learn the fundamentals of quilling and then explore a variety of quilling techniques, with plenty of individual attention. We will work with both traditional and contemporary approaches to quilling, using different types of paper to create several projects. No previous experience with quilling is needed. A $35 MATERIALS FEE, PAYABLE DIRECTLY TO THE INSTRUCTOR AT THE FIRST CLASS, gets you all the tools and materials you need for the class and to continue your new craft at home. Working with 1/4" paper, we will focus on the following techniques used in more advanced designs: —How to transfer key design elements, such as pattern outlines and placement markers, to your quilling surface; also tips for finding and adapting suitable designs. —How to do on-edge quilling (quilling with a single, unrolled strip of paper). On-edge quilling is used to outline shapes and letters, and is also used as a fill technique in many contemporary designs. You will receive several patterns and choose one to outline and create as your in-class project. —How to mount your finished piece in a frame or shadowbox; also tips for adapting a design to a particular frame or mat size. You will receive a 5x7” shadowbox to mount your in-class project. The class will start with simple exercises and expand into finished drawings. DRAWING PET PORTRAITS AND OTHER ANIMALS This fun and exciting class is especially designed for those who want to draw a portrait of their furry family member! Pets are such an integral part of our lives, so why not learn how to capture that special relationship with a drawing in black and white or color? Students will provide the photo reference to work from of their favorite dog, cat or otherwise, while the instructor will demonstrate techniques ranging from animal fur, proportions, eyes, teeth, etc. Students will also be free to draw more exotic animals if they wish. PAN PASTEL: "A TRULY NEW ART MEDIUM" Pan pastels are a 21st century invention. In this one day workshop students will try and explore the many possibilities of this amazing medium and acquire a basic understanding and working knowledge of this exciting new medium. Pan pastels are really new and differenthe soft pastels on which they are based. Pan pastels do not create a dusty mess, are easy to handle, and have a consistency that almost feels creamy although they are a dry medium. PAINT A DISH WORKSHOP Create an everlasting work of art. This workshop provides the opportunity to paint with semi moist nontoxic under-glazes to create a watercolor-like-effect painting on your dish. First you will create a design on paper using traditional watercolors (watercolor instruction provided, as needed). Second you will transfer with instructor's assistance the outline of your design to a bisqued dish. Third, instructor will guide you through process of painting the dish using semi moist non-toxic under-glazes. The painted dishes will be glazed and fired in a ceramic kiln and ready to pick up in a few days. The final dish will be food safe and dishwasher safe. All materials included (with material fee).
