Handbuilding EXPLORING HANDBUILDING TECHNIQUES Recommended as a Student's first ceramics course, though more advanced students are also welcome. The thing about clay is, you can turn it into almost anything with just your hands and a few simple tools. We will explore the many techniques available to create, decorate and fire work that is "you". Functional to sculptural; the sublime to the ridiculous. CERAMICS – Raku RAKU - PLAY WITH FIRE Raku is a Japanese-inspired firing process that creates spectacular results very rapidly. Lots of smoke, fun, spontaneity and surprises! We will also explore alternative firing techniques such as sawdust and saggar and various decorating techniques including terra sigillata, propane torching, smoking, etc. The emphasis is on glazing and firing; therefore, some experience with clay construction methods is desirable, though not mandatory. INTRODUCTION TO PAPER QUILLING NEW Quilling is the centuries-old process of rolling and shaping strips of paper, which are then adhered to a surface to create a larger design. The class will introduce students to the following fundamental elements of quilling: o Paper selection and preparation o Cutting tools o Quilling tools o Glue selection o Basic quilling techniques o Basic gluing techniques o Design creation. The instructor will guide students in applying their new quilling skills to create a "takeaway" object that is appropriate for the season. For example, for a class offered in the fall or winter, we might focus on a design for a holiday card or ornament. All materials and tools are supplied with a $20 materials fee payable to the instructor at the time of the workshop. Quilling is a detailed activity that requires patience and some degree of manual dexterity as well as good eyesight. Bring your magnifiers or an Opti-Visor if needed. DRAWING THE FIGURE FROM PHOTOS Drawing the figure from a live model has classically been the preferred method, but working from photo reference can be equally helpful-and a bit simpler for the average aspiring artist! This class will give students a great opportunity to develop and improve their figure drawing skills without having to pay any model fees to do so! Students will be able to draw the figure nude or clothed, from photographic reference they provide. Reference can be from life, or from works of art including paintings, drawings, or sculpture. This class is designed for students of all levels. You can work from photos, a still life setup that will be provided, your own sketches, imagination, or personal objects that you bring to class. We will discuss your goals and what your subject matter will be, during the first class. Special attention will be provided to students that are new to oil painting. Students with experience can start painting immediately. Students will work at their own pace. The instructor will provide helpful suggestions about technique, materials, and answer questions along the way. You will: " learn how to use oil paints and mediums " how to create good composition " enhance depth and contrast with the use of color " learn how to interpret what you see " brush stroke and pallet knife techniques " mix colors effectively Realism, impressionism, and abstract ideas are welcome. You will become more confident with oil paints and your capabilities. This is a class for artistic freedom. Pen and ink....it sounds so permanent & maybe a little scary, but it doesn't have to be! There are so many wonderful ways to let this medium have it's way creating artistic wonders while it's presence adds emotion & intrigue to any drawing. Subtle style variations yields work which ranges from whimsical/clever illustrations to breathtaking and realistic drawings. We'll explore many of the methods for building shape, design, detail & value. There is a reason Rembrandt, Durer & others created ink drawings & working sketches every day. BLACKSMTHING BEYOND the BASICS Move beyond the basics of blacksmithing. Topics include joinery, toolmaking, heat treating, complex forging and composition. YOUNG REMBRANDTS: PASTEL WORKSHOP FOR AGES 6-12: ART HISTORY WITH THE MASTERS Your child will learn to use soft pastels as we explore art history and the works of the Masters. We'll be inspired by Van Gogh's Harvest at Le Crau and Monet's Regatta at Argenteail. We will draw a colorful goldfish bowl in the style of Henri Matisse. Finally, we will create a still life full of robust color reminiscent of Cezanne's paintings. No experience necessary. Wear an old shirt or smock to class each day.
