Implementing the right interventions for your child’s development is vital to ensuring they achieve the best possible outcomes. But with hundreds of different types of interventions available, how can you identify which ones you should do, and which ones you shouldn’t? New research from Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Institute offers the most comprehensive summary available of interventions that work and those that don’t, for children with cerebral palsy. A team led by Professor Iona Novak, Head of Research, Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Institute and the University of Sydney, has updated an earlier paper published in 2013, gathering and analysing all systematic reviews newly available between 2013 and 2019. After a search and review of more than 1500 articles, the team identified 182 different

interventions for cerebral palsy – 41 to prevent and 141 to manage. And among those interventions were 398 different outcomes that had been measured – things like quality of life, gross motor skills or sleep. The interventions were then graded on a scale of “Do it” through to “Don’t do it” by using the Evidence Alert Traffic Light Grading System, developed by Cerebral Palsy Alliance in 2012 to help parents, clients and clinicians understand evidence. “A key benefit of the paper is that it allows us to bring more evidenced-based practice interventions to the frontline and to our families.” Iona Novak

Jayden has been accessing CPA expertise since he was three years old. For his most recent NDIS plan, Jayden’s therapist worked with him and his family to identify key goals, one of which was learning how to tie his shoelaces. There might be a few things that are stopping Jayden from being able to tie his shoelaces – limited task knowledge, reduced dexterity, or perhaps some muscle weakness affecting his fine motor skills and motor planning. In order to tie his shoelaces, there are two interventions which might be applicable for Jayden: • Action Observation Training: this type of therapy involves the client observing a demonstration of an activity, and then performing that task to the best of their ability. • CO-OP: Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance is a client centred intervention, where a therapist supports and guides the child to discover their own strategies to achieve the goals. Using the paper, Jayden’s therapist can see the CO-OP intervention has been graded with a strong yellow light, with promising evidence for effectiveness. Studies have also shown this intervention can achieve the same level of results whether it is delivered at a high or low intensity, and that the intervention can also improve self-esteem. She can also see that the Action Observation intervention has been graded with a green light, indicating there is high-quality evidence for the intervention’s effectiveness.

Through our clinically-backed early childhood intervention programs, and experience leading one of the world’s largest early intervention clinical trials to improve movement and cognition, we give you science-backed hope.

After discussing the options with Jayden’s family in more detail, they decide to try a block of CO-OP at the lower intensity, conducted once a week over a ten week period. They also decide to add Action Observation intervention to supplement CO-OP over the same period of time.

Supporting babies and children with a range of neurological and physical disabilities to become their best self.

EXPO

Welcom e to the SYDNEY Source Kids Disability Expo special digital issue of our expo g uide!

We

are so disappointed that we are not able to host our Sydney Expo on September 19 and 20 this year as planned, we were looking forward to this event, as we know you were too. It has been a big year for everyone across the globe with a pandemic that has fundamentally changed the way most of us work and live. One thing we do know, is that our community of parents and carers of children with special needs, continue to need and search for products and services to help their child live their best life. These needs don’t go away during COVID, yet the opportunities for our community to search for the answers they need are limited. While we are not able to deliver our Sydney expo when we intended because of government regulations around events, we decided to put together this fantastic digital expo guide to help everyone until we are able to deliver our expo event (scheduled for April 2021). This guide features all of our sponsors and exhibitors with information about their products and services. It’s digital so you can click through to their site for more information with the click of a mouse and our exhibitors can then provide more information or answers to questions on their products and services. Don’t be shy, our exhibitors are incredible and happy to help in any way they can. We hope you enjoy this digital expo guide, we can’t wait to see you all in April and we hope you are all staying safe and well during these challenging times. Much love from the entire Source Kids team!

PERFORMANCE

ZONE

expect fun, m usic, dancing and lots of smiles At the sydney Performance zone

Our Performance Zone at our Sydney will feature some incredible performances, designed to entertain young and old ! We chat to Lah-Lah and Buzz, stars of ABC Kids who will be joining us in Sydney for two very special interactive musical workshops.

What do you love most about performing live? There’s nothing better than sharing music with people live. There’s a magical connection that happens when you are on stage. I love looking out into the audience and seeing all those smiling faces.

We’re so excited that we’ll get to see you in Sydney ! What are you looking forward to? For Mark and myself it’s really all about meeting the families. The expos we performed at last year were so much fun. Mums, Dads and kids all joined in and it was a wonderful family environment. This is our first Sydney Expo – what can the audience expect from you guys? Lots of music, singing and dancing. Our performance is really interactive and we keep the sound levels down so little ones with sensory sensibilities can enjoy the show.

How have you been keeping busy during the pandemic? Yes, we’ve been making lots of Youtube videos and doing Facebook live shows for families in lockdown. It’s a really challenging time for everyone but it’s also an opportunity to connect with families in regional areas that previously haven’t been able to attend live shows. We hope 2021 is a better year that 2020, do you have any big plans? Well hopefully we’ll be back on the road and touring with the whole band. We’re also looking at creating a new CD. Any final message for our audience? Really looking forward to seeing everyone in Sydney!

Our full list of performers will be released in the coming months, get excited for some entertainment on the stage in Sydney, can’t wait to see you there !

INFO

SPEAKERS

POD

Our Sydney Info Pod will be jam-packed with an incredible line up of speakers in April, we can’t wait! We chat to our Info Pod Partner Leap in! who will also be delivering a keynote presentation at the expo on NDIS Plan Management – all you need to know to get the best from your plan.

What is plan management? When you have your NDIS Plan meeting, you’ll be asked how you would like to manage your plan. You have three options. The NDIA can manage your plan for you. You can manage your plan yourself. Or, you can ask for plan management. If it suits your needs, you can also choose to use a combination of these options. Plan management gives you choice and control over how you use your NDIS budget but with support to manage your funds and pay your bills. Working with a plan manager is like having your own NDIS-funded bookkeeper who takes care of all your NDIS-related paperwork. Best of all, there’s no cost to you as the NDIS adds extra funds to your plan to cover the cost of plan management. What do you want people to know about Leap in!? Leap in! is Australia’s leading NDIS plan manager, supporting thousands of NDIS participants nation-wide. As a registered charity, Leap in! puts people before profit. This means offering much more than just fast payment of invoices. We can also provide you with connections to providers near you for the services you need. Plus, you get access to the award-winning Leap in! app which is the perfect tool to help you prepare for your NDIS Plan meetings and give you real-time tracking of your NDIS budgets. How do you choose plan management for your NDIS Plan? Getting plan management is easy – just ask the NDIS for it. This is usually done at an NDIS Plan or Plan Review meeting. It can also be done at any time, between plans. A Plan Review meeting is the ideal time to switch how your plan is managed. You can switch all or part of your funds to plan management. If you are in the middle of an existing plan and would like to change from being Agency or self managed, you’ll need to contact the NDIS and ask to change your plan management type.

A registered provider is an individual or a business that is registered with the NDIS to provide supports or services to NDIS participants. A non-registered provider is an individual or business that provides supports or services and is not registered with the NDIS. Do you have any tips for parents or carers of a child with a disability looking to navigate the NDIS? Take the time to set clear goals for your child / the child you care for such as what they want to learn, develop or achieve. For an NDIS Plan to be approved, the supports and services requested should be related to the child’s goals. We often hear that setting goals is one of the biggest challenges people face in navigating the NDIS. To help, we created a special section in the Leap in! app which has a comprehensive list of Goals and Goal Steps that can be filtered to suit any condition and life stage. What is the Leap in! Crew looking forward to about the upcoming Source Kids Expo in Sydney? The Source Kids Expo is always such a valuable opportunity for families and carers of children with a disability to find new products and services, hear from experts and advocates, and have fun. We’ve really enjoyed participating previous Source Kids expos. It means having the chance to catch up with our members, to connect with providers to hear what’s new and to meet families, answering questions and providing ideas on how to get the most out of NDIS plans.

Our full list of Info Pod speakers will be released in the coming months, get excited for some entertaining, empowering and informational presentations on the stage in Sydney, can’t wait to see you there!

Registered and non-registered providers: what’s the difference? The providers you can use depends on how you choose to manage your NDIS Plan. If you choose plan management, to self manage or a combination plan, you have the freedom to use any provider, registered or not. M e l b o u r n e D i sa b i l i t y Exp o Gu i d e 2020 2 9

It has been a challenging year for a lot of those in our communities and times such as the ones we are living in now, make us appreciate our loved ones more so than ever before.
