The World Barista Championships (8th to 10th November) Coffee is enjoyed by millions all over the world. With over 63 types and roasts of coffees to savour, there is a delicious selection of coffee drinks to choose from.

offers piping hot filter coffee as well as an array of specialty coffee drinks brewed on demand. thebestofzambia.com/blue-moon-cafe

The word ‘barista’ comes from the Italian for bartender. It describes a person who serves and prepares coffee drinks. The pursuit for the perfect cup of coffee led to the formation of the World Barista Championship (WBC), an international coffee competition. Founded by the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe and the Specialty Coffee Association of America, it focuses on promoting excellence in coffee, advancing the barista profession, and engaging a worldwide audience with an annual championship event. Each year, champions representing more than 50 nations, prepare four espressos, cappuccinos, and original signature drinks to exacting standards during a 15 minute performance set to music.

Each year, champions representing more than 50 nations, prepare four espressos, cappuccinos, and original signature drinks to exacting standards during a 15 minute performance set to music. WBC Certified Judges evaluate each performance on taste, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill, and overall presentation. The signature beverage allows baristas to stretch their imagination and the judges’ palates to incorporate their coffee knowledge into an expression of their individual tastes and experiences.

Zambia has not shied away from this challenge. Francis Njobvu was the first national barista champion and went on to compete in Japan in 2007 and Denmark in 2008. Syria Mwanza was the second champion who went on to compete in London in 2010. This year, baristas from all over Zambia are battling it out at Rhapsody’s Restaurant in Lusaka with the semi finals on the 8th and 9th of November (Tuesday 13: to 17:00, Wednesday 10:00 to 17:00). The finals are on the 10th of November from 11:00 to 14:00. The Zambian barista champion will go on to represent Zambia in the African Barista Challenge in Ethiopia (February 2012) and in the World Barista championship in Austria (June 2012). 16 baristas from different companies have confirmed their participation. — Travel and Leisure: EVENTS Kasanka’s giant bat migration (10th October to 30th December)

One of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles takes place every year in a remote corner of Zambia.

One of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles takes place every year in a remote corner of Zambia. The Kasanka National Park bat migration is four times the size of the great Wildebeest migration in Tanzania. For a few weeks a year an unimaginable number of about straw-coloured Fruit Bats gather in a small clump of trees in the national park. Bats are not easy to count, but researchers estimate the size of the colony to be somewhere between five and 10 million. Strawcoloured Fruit Bats are the second

12

largest bat species in Africa with a wingspan of 80 centimetres. During the day they are clumped together in the trees of the evergreen forest. At 18.00 sharp they fly out en masse in search of food. Witnessing the sky darkened by millions of bats is an awesome and unbeatable experience.

At 18.00 sharp they fly out en masse in search of food. Witnessing the sky darkened by millions of bats is an awesome and unbeatable experience. With roughly four times as many mammals as the famous Serengeti Wildebeest migration, the Kasanka bat migration is said to be the

largest mammal aggregation in the world. Imagine all these animals congregated in an area roughly the size of a football pitch, spending most of the day hanging upside down in tightly packed clusters on any branch or tree trunk strong enough to hold their weight. These giant bats are great fun to watch — always chattering, fidgeting and climbing over each other to find another position — either to fly off or to reposition for a pee without drenching the others. The bats are believed to migrate from all over Central and Southern Africa, flying to a small 2.5 acre area of Mushitu swamp forest in the heart of Kasanka National Park. A researcher collared some of the bats from the Kasanka colony with tiny satellite trackers

and discovered the bats fly as far as 3,500 kilometres into the Congolese rainforests. Kasanka National Park is Zambia’s first privately managed park. Without an abundant presence of ‘the big 5’ it is not a traditional safari destination but it has its own claims.

Kasanka National Park is Zambia’s first privately managed park. Without an abundant presence of ‘the big 5’ it is not a traditional safari destination but the park has its own claims. Apart from the bats, Kasanka is also known for Africa’s highest density

of Sitatunga. Anyone who has spent hours searching in wetland areas pestered by mosquitoes will enjoy observing this handsome swamp antelope in comfort from the 15 metre high Fibwe tree platform! Visitors to Kasanka are guaranteed excellent photo opportunities for bats, sitatunga and abundant birds. Bird watching is especially good at this time with migrants adding to the bird list. Visiting Kasanka during this early rainy season shows the park at its best. The trees are bright green and red, flowers are everywhere, and there are bright clear skies. The first bats usually arrive around 10th October and stay until Christmas.

The first bats usually arrive around 10th October and stay until Christmas. Guests are welcome to observe the bats from two public viewing areas and two platforms. Green season discounts from Taita Falcon Lodge

Taita Falcon Lodge in Livingstone is a definite must visit this time of year. Experience the extraordinary accommodation that this delightful lodge has to offer, perched on the very edge of the Batoka Gorge with superb views of the raging waters 200 metres below. Taita Falcon has launched its popular “green season” rates. Green season is Zambia is another way of describing the rainy season when all things turn green — ok, not literally! Taita Falcon’s green season started at the beginning of November and goes on right up to the end of March 2012. As the rainy season comes on, most people have the misguided belief that they should not visit the Victoria Falls. However, this is one of the best times of the year to visit! It’s the time when all the migratory birds return, the bush becomes a spectacular, lush and green forest, the Zambezi River starts rising and the Victoria Falls shows off its true splendour. Game viewing is still fantastic at this time as well.

— Travel and Leisure: NEWS Victoria Apartments get snappy! Victoria Apartments are excited to announce its new photographs which encapsulate the warm, welcoming and homely feel of these apartments. They recently had a professional photographer take artistic shots of the apartments which are set in pristine surroundings, in Zambia’s tourist capital, Livingstone. The photographer arrived in the late afternoon, all the way from Europe. She got straight to work after being inspired by her quick tour of the all encompassing Livingstone capital. The Victoria Apartments photographer was able to infuse local culture with a modern touch, sticking to the Victoria Apartments ethos of ‘family first’ and ‘home away from home’. With her creative eye, the photographer was able to blend in the warm earth tones experienced in nature, common to Livingstone’s local flora and fauna. She shot the pictures from artistic angles giving differing views of the apartments, inside and out. The pictures highlight the comfort, tranquillity and beauty a visitor experiences during their stay in any one of the apartments.

— Staff news and opinions Lessons from happy days at University It’s been an exciting year for the Best of Zambia team. Last month featured the article about our PR and Marketing Director, Sara Drawwater getting married in Mauritius. A little before that, one of the newest members to the team, Nambeye Katebe, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication! Nambeye interned for The Best of Zambia during her four years of study at the University of Zambia and officially joined the team in June 2011. In this month’s article, Nambeye shares how that whole experience was for her: “Graduating from the University was a real milestone for me. I have always been interested in media and fancied myself travelling the world and reporting all about it, (still hoping that this happens!)

Graduating from the University was a real milestone for me. I have always been interested in media and fancied myself travelling the world and reporting all about it, (still hoping that this happens!) Majoring in Mass Communication was an easy choice for me. The program was very interactive and I got to learn a bit of everything, from advertising, to public relations and print through to broadcast media. Mass Communication is a very comprehensive program and especially useful in today’s market as every company needs some form of media management. I was fortunate enough to get a full time job with the Best of Zambia immediately after my studies. Unfortunately, unemployment rates in Zambia are very high, and I have seen many of my friends, and some of my family, who have graduated with honours and waited for years afterwards without employment. This is an extremely disheartening situation and I am hopeful that the new Government will treat this matter as a priority.

38

I have walked away with many lessons during my time at University. Especially, the realisation that education will open up your mind to a world of possibilities but it won’t magically make life any easier.

I have walked away with many lessons during my time at University. Especially the realisation that education will open up your mind to a world of possibilities, but it won’t magically make life any easier. You have to be proactive and take the skills you have learned to build a better future for yourself. I have also learned that life after school is not easy as university life is sheltered. You know what to do the next day, and all that is expected of you is to study and pass your exams. Out in the real world you must learn to get things done on your own. Freedom comes with a price and that price is the responsibility over your own life. I have learned to value education but most importantly I have discovered that the truth of the matter is that education is not only taught in a classroom. For me every day is a lesson. Every new person I interact with, every situation I am faced with teaches me something. I am well aware that not every person has had the privileges that I have had — some people cannot afford to go to school and others are faced with serious learning difficulties. Once you learn that true education comes from a willingness to explore the world and glean from others, you will unlock the secret — all things are possible. Do not limit yourself because of your circumstances; use your skills and your talents to make your life fulfilling. I am extremely grateful to my family who have been supportive in all the years of my studies, my friends who took me under their wings and helped me find the balance between hard work and pleasure, my boyfriend who forced me to study all the time and my workmates who have welcomed me to a new environment and a new phase in my life.” The Best of Zambia is very pleased to have welcomed Nambeye on the team, in her role as Multi-media Journalist. There is so much media to manage (multiple social media channels, hundreds of clients and nearly 1,000 pages of web content on the website). Nambeye has adapted well to this fast paced environment. With our expansion plans she may just get her wish to travel the world! PR and Marketing Director, Sara Drawwater
