From the editor >> Welcome to the third issue of our magazine, the October 2011 issue. Wow, what a month September has been! The elections took centre stage and rightly so. With the change of party from Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD) to the Patriotic Front (PF) I am very proud that Zambia is pioneering the democratic process in Zambia. Read what Julia Brown, our Operations Director has to say about the elections on page 24. On top of this I and some members of the team spent time in Mauritius for my wedding! Read about that on page 23. I’ll be writing a blog about my thoughts on Mauritius tourism and what Zambia can learn from it. Round the corner are some exciting events! You won’t need reminding about Independence Day but there is also the Zambezi River Festival (page 6) and the Kasanka bat migration this October (page 8). And there is more ... Enjoy.

— Travel and Leisure: EVENTS Kasanka’s giant bat migration (10th October to 30th December)

One of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles takes place every year in a remote corner of Zambia.

One of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles takes place every year in a remote corner of Zambia. The Kasanka National Park bat migration is four times the size of the great Wildebeest migration in Tanzania. For a few weeks a year an unimaginable number of about eight million straw-coloured Fruit Bats gather in a small clump of trees in the national park. Bats are not easy to count, but researchers estimate the size of the colony to be somewhere between five and 10 million. Straw-coloured Fruit Bats

8

are the second largest bat species in Africa with a wingspan of 80 centimetres. During the day they are clumped together in the trees of the evergreen forest. At 18.00 sharp they fly out en masse in search of food. Witnessing the sky being darkened by millions of bats is an awesome and unbeatable experience.

At 18.00 sharp they fly out en masse in search of food. Witnessing the sky being darkened by millions of bats is an awesome and unbeatable experience. With roughly four times as many mammals as the famous Serengeti Wildebeest migration, the Kasanka

bat migration is said to be the largest mammal aggregation in the world. Imagine all these animals congregated in an area roughly the size of a football pitch, spending most of the day hanging upside down in tightly packed clusters on any branch or tree trunk strong enough to hold their weight. These giant bats are great fun to watch — always chattering, fidgeting and climbing over each other to find another position — either to fly off or to reposition for a pee without drenching the others. The bats are believed to migrate from all over Central and Southern Africa, flying to a small 2.5 acre area of Mushitu swamp forest in the heart of Kasanka National Park. A researcher collared some of the bats from the Kasanka

colony with tiny satellite trackers and discovered the bats fly as far as 3,500 kilometres into the Congolese rainforests. Kasanka National Park is Zambia’s first privately managed park. Without an abundant presence of ‘the big 5’ it is not a traditional safari destination but it has its own claims.

Kasanka National Park is Zambia’s first privately managed park. Without an abundant presence of ‘the big 5’ it is not a traditional safari destination but the park has its own claims. Apart from the bats, Kasanka is also known for Africa’s highest density

of Sitatunga. Anyone who has spent hours searching in wetland areas pestered by mosquitos will enjoy observing this handsome swamp antelope in comfort from the 15 metre high Fibwe tree platform. Visitors to Kasanka are guaranteed excellent photo opportunities for bats, sitatunga and abundant birds. Bird watching is especially good at this time with migrants adding to the bird list. Visiting Kasanka during this early rainy season shows the park at its best. The trees are bright green and red, flowers are everywhere, and there are bright clear skies. The first bats usually arrive around 10th October and stay until Christmas.

Guided bat walks in small groups are offered for those who want to witness the mind boggling flying in or out of the roost at close range. The roost itself is closed to the public in order to avoid disturbance. All income from Kasanka tourism goes towards conservation and community development.

— Travel and Leisure: NEWS Tiger fishing news from Barotse Tiger Camp

South African Airways flies to Ndola from

Barotse Tiger Camp kicked off their 2011 fishing season with a bang in mid April. The flood waters receded off the Barotse Flood Plains and produced some spectacular feeding frenzies as the Tiger fish hammered the shoals of bait fish entering the main channels. Much surface action was had and the Crease Fly was the main contributor to surface caught Tiger fish.

South African Airways (SAA) will fly directly from Johannesburg to Ndola from the 1st of October 2011. This will further strengthen its African route network.

From mid April to early June Barotse Tiger Camp landed 164 Tiger fish over ten pounds, the biggest being 18.5 pounds!

From mid April to early June Barotse Tiger Camp landed 164 Tiger fish over ten pounds, the biggest being 18.5 pounds! The biggest catch on fly to date this season was 17 pounds. Many trophy tigers on fly are being lost due to incorrect fishing techniques. The double haul stripping technique produces the best results for trophy Tigers, enabling the angler to effectively strip strike the Tiger fish. Always having a hand on the line increases their chance of hook up when hit between strips.

10

The most memorable fish so far this season was hooked right in front of Barotse Tiger Camp, late in the afternoon. This was on a black Clouser, after a phenomenally aggressive take, the Tiger fish +/19 pounds, stripped the client well into the backing. After a great aerobatic display (around seven jumps) the Tiger was brought close to the boat, only to take to the air once again in a last desperate bid to escape, and careered straight into the side of the boat, effectively dislodging the Clouser. It lay motionless next to the boat, obviously slightly stunned. Both guide and angler leaned over the gunwale with the guide attempting to net it. The moment the net touched the water, the magnificent fish came to life and with one powerful kick of its tail, disappeared down into the safety of the depths of The Mighty Zambezi. Welcome to the land of the Barotse Tigers!

— Travel and Leisure: NEWS Wilderness Safaris — it began with a single Land Rover and a very big dream This month Wilderness Safaris joins the Best of Zambia! They are one of the leading providers of top notch safari experiences in Zambia. When they shared their story, we decided to share it with you! More than 25 years ago a group of individuals fell in love with the remote and wild places in Africa. They realised that unless they acted soon, some of Africa’s — and the world’s — most unique areas would be under threat and lost to future generations. Their dream was to protect these places by enabling people to visit them and allow their communities to make a living at the same time. The realisation dawned that they too were part of this wild place, that as custodians of this planet they needed to do all they could to protect these places — that there are real choices we can all make to make a difference. Wilderness Safaris was established in 1983 by a group of individuals who had a dream — a dream to share some of the most remote wilderness areas on the African sub-continent with people from all over the world, in a way that lightly touched the environment but left a big imprint on the soul.

Wilderness Safaris was established in 1983 by a group of individuals who had a dream — a dream to share some of the most remote wilderness areas on the African sub-continent with people from all over the world, in a way that lightly touched the environment but left a big imprint on the soul. Today, 25 years later, Wilderness Safaris has grown to manage over 50 exclusive camps and lodges in six southern African countries and the Seychelles. But while they may have increased in size, their culture and values have remained the same. In the early 1980s, Botswana was a little-known safari destination. Photographic safaris were generally restricted to using the national parks, while hunting safari companies controlled large tracts of the Okavango Delta. Safaris usually began in Johannesburg, with guests being driven all the way through Botswana and Victoria Falls and back to Johannesburg.

12

It was at this time that two guides with an ardent desire to improve the way in which safaris were operated started Wilderness Safaris. They both had an intense and intrinsic love of the environment and believed fervently that time was ripe for change. The first step was to set up an operation based in Maun, Botswana, so as to maximise the time spent in the prime game viewing areas. Better Land Rovers were used and specialist safaris were introduced — the business began to grow. Like minded guides joined and Wilderness Safaris began to spread out into neighbouring countries. By the 1990s, they were a wellknown mobile camping safari company and had begun to develop a few permanent camps. Around this time, the government of Botswana reviewed the use of land in the Okavango and superb areas outside the national parks became available for tender. This single act changed the face of safaris in Botswana and allowed Wilderness Safaris to develop and grow in a meaningful way. Similar developments

took place in other countries — Malawi, Namibia and Zimbabwe all developed lodge and camp circuits which changed the emphasis of the business. An important development at this time was the introduction of meaningful community involvement in both ownership and operating of concessions.

An important development was the introduction of meaningful community involvement in both ownership and operating of concessions. Although this had already taken place at Rocktail Bay in South Africa, the model that was developed between Wilderness Safaris Namibia and the people of the Damaraland area was to set new standards for the industry. So successful has this project been that the area was declared a Conservancy by the Namibian government, and Damaraland Camp won the international “Tourism for Tomorrow” award in 2005. Today, the scope and variety of areas that Wilderness Safaris currently manages is beyond compare. Their aim is to operate in the best wilderness and wildlife areas in all countries in which they are present. Expansion of the group, most recently into Zambia, constantly provides opportunities to enter fantastic new locations. Their mobile camping safaris have also undergone much development in the last two years, the most important feature being that they are now able to operate largely in their own concession areas, allowing greater privacy and exclusivity than they had when the company first began.

In a sense, this has taken them back to their source, which has been pleasing for a group of people who take so much pride in where they have come from and seek to remain true to their origins. They believe the single most important achievement by Wilderness Safaris to date is to have built a sustainable business model that does not compromise its environmental principles and which, through jobs, training, skills, careers, adjusted horizons and hope, provides a realistic alternative to some of Africa’s challenges.

They believe the single most important achievement by Wilderness Safaris to date is to have built a sustainable business model that does not compromise its environmental principles and which, through jobs, training, skills, careers, adjusted horizons and hope, provides a realistic alternative to some of Africa’s challenges. The fact that they have been able to achieve success in their business while remaining environmentally responsible over the past 25 years is a superb plus. — Organisations and Development: News Mercy Flyers make a difference in Zambia

In 2007, colleagues and friends thought the Mercy Flyers team had taken leave of their senses as they headed off to Zambia from the UK with no discernible income but just the idea of doing something to meet the overwhelming medical need in Zambia. “We certainly didn’t know what we were doing to some extent, despite being from South Africa originally. We started a charity in our kitchen in Norwich with a dear group of friends who supported our venture in spite of their misgivings. Sometimes you do have to leap and then look…”

“We certainly didn’t know what we were doing to some extent, despite being from South Africa originally. We started a charity in our kitchen in Norwich with a dear group of friends who supported our venture in spite of their misgivings. Sometimes you do have to leap and then look…” Mercy Flyers was started in the UK in May 2006 and took nearly two years to register as a charity in Zambia. By being in Zambia, meeting people and finding out the specific needs of the people, the lives of the team have taken their individual turns. Craig Oranmore-Brown teamed up with Michael Breen a consultant gynaecologist with a gift for fistula surgery. They were given grant funding to do obstetric fistula surgery. Craig set up the programme of flying the team (mostly Michael and Craig) to various remote hospitals and bringing a lifeline of hope to women generally shunned by their communities. These women have

22

suffered unspeakably through prolonged obstructed labour without the facilities or infrastructure to get a Caesarian Section, usually a stillbirth days later, followed by the humiliating condition of urinary incontinence or in some cases, faeces as a fistula develops. This is surgery that really can give a woman her life back. Rae Oranmore-Brown is currently a general surgery registrar at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka. This is an unpaid position. She is also a post graduate student at the University of Zambia. Craig, one of a handful of consultant anaesthetists in the country, is an honorary (also unpaid) consultant in UTH Intensive Care Unit. He is one of the few doctors in the country with ICU training. He is also helping with the new post graduate training programme in anaesthesia. He champions anaesthesia, giving a voice to the anaesthetic clinical officers (technicians) who do most of the anaesthesia, particularly in the rural areas. Mercy Flyers consider it a privilege to work with other charities. They work closely with Africare in their gynaecology fistula work. This is a relationship they hope to continue and perhaps expand. Mercy Flyers partner with Flying Mission for access to aeroplanes. Craig has a commercial pilot’s licence and assists in flying duties. Mercy Flyers also partner with an eye charity International Vision Volunteers. This enabled them to do eye surgery in Zimba to provide anaesthetic services for paediatric eye surgery. New exciting possibilities include extending their work into general paediatric surgery to more rural areas.

The current life of the Mercy Flyers team could never be possible without the people who have faithfully supported them emotionally, spiritually and financially. The team have a sense of being members of a family who have decided to be part of providing a tiny piece of the solution to giving people a lifeline of hope.

about this through whatever surgical outreach is possible, basically whatever they get funding for. The team want to thank those who have opted in with them. They believe they may not change the world, but together you have made life a little more bearable for some of the most forgotten.

Most recently Mercy Flyers were in Zimba providing a paediatric anaesthesia service for the International Vision Volunteers doing eye surgery there. This enabled them to do surgery on a group of children.

The Mercy Flyers team serve Zambian people who, by virtue of their birth in a remote area in a developing country have almost no access to specialist health care. The purpose of Mercy Flyers is to do something

Hats off to Zambia — pioneering the democratic process in Africa!

Michael Sata is President of Zambia. Many have rejoiced at the news and many have received it with mixed feelings; some are outright horrified. But then politics do tend to engender the whole spectrum of emotions. Setting aside personalities, let’s reflect for a moment at what has just happened in Zambia and the background to it. For those of us who may not have the facts at our fingertips, Zambia gained independence from its colonial masters in 1964. It was a multi-party democratic election process and Kenneth Kaunda was voted in as President, with UNIP as the ruling party. Zambia became a one party state in 1972. In 1991, in keeping with the political climate of the day and in response to pressure from outside investors, it returned to a multi-party democracy. MMD rose to power, with Frederick Chiluba as President. In 2001, after Chiluba had enjoyed two terms of office as president, MMD retained power under the leadership of Levy Mwanawasa. After Mr Mwanawasa’s untimely death in 2008, Rupiah Banda was elected as President, a position he retained until last week. Now, after 20 years under MMD, Zambia has a new party in power, the Patriotic Front, with Michael Sata at the helm. Throughout these last 47 years we see a state evolving and maturing, a nation blossoming and growing,

despite hard knocks, despite major setbacks, and yes despite serious flaws.

Throughout these last 47 years we see a state evolving and maturing, a nation blossoming and growing, despite hard knocks, despite major setbacks, and yes despite serious flaws. Not perfect by any means. But evolving nevertheless. Two statesmen have graciously handed over power to another party - Kenneth Kaunda and now Rupiah Banda. I commend them for that. Michael Sata releases a white dove during his swearing in ceremony - a symbol of peace. I commend him for that. As I write this article, President Sata has announced his government, with Guy Scott as his Vice President. This makes Zambia, as far as I am aware, the first African country to have a white Vice President within a democratically-elected government. Again commendation is due. There are valid concerns about lack of representation within the Cabinet - too many Bembas and too many men. But then the Zambian democracy is still maturing. I pray that Zambia, the promising child, may mature into adulthood prosperous, principled and powerful. Article by, Operations Director, Julia Brown

Interesting tweets on the elections @Frank_Siwale Cool man we’ve shown the World that this is a true #Democratic state.#Zambia @gijaynextreme i love my country. May not always agree with everything that goes on but...#zambia @SkillsUK #Zambia continues to break boundaries...1st African Country with white Vice-President. #GuyScott @SirNige VP of Zambia is a white guy - Guy Scott don’t know many white VPs in Africa. Let’s see what happens to foreign investment in that country @brandoncurrie Does the election of Michael Sata reject Chinese investment in #Zambia? @hofrench Chinese mines raise wages in Zambia after Sata victory (CSM): http://bit.ly/oWoXdt @missbwalya I just wish I could say nicer things about gender representation in new Cabinet. *sigh* #Zambia @livilodge #ZNBC #Zambia For an historic and national event that coverage was simply dreadful, no excuses. You are visually and aurally challenged @emmab33 Can you transform a country in 90 days? Zambia’s new president #michaelsata thinks so...
