Welcome

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Center! We are thrilled to have you here to enjoy the exciting lineup of shows we have planned for the month of April. Get ready for incredible performances and activities sure to inspire and entertain you.

We are so honored to host chamber prodigies Bennewitz Quartet and Arsentiy Kharitonov and Ébène Quartet as they fill our halls with their stellar interpretations and outstanding range of classical pieces. Enchant yourself with the North American premiere of American Ballet Theatre’s Woolf Works, directed and choreographed by Wayne McGregor as he embraces technology through a newly imagined ballet triptych. GRAMMY®-winning trumpeter Chris Botti never fails to amaze with his glorious jazz music. For in-depth conversations, New York Times best-selling author Michael Pollan discusses the socio-cultural impact of food. Based on a timeless film gem, Beetlejuice will make your “Day-O” as it shakes up Segerstrom Hall! And for youthful theatre enthusiasts, The Boy Who Cried Wolf offers a less spooky musical alternative, adorned with a wonderful wintry set and a delightful cast of characters based on the famous children’s fable. Our resident company Pacific Symphony brings Michael Cavanaugh to perform The Music of Elton John; it will be a memorable night to rock out!

Thank you for your ongoing support! Enjoy the show!

Feel at home with Matt Doyle

Matt Doyle won a Tony® Award on the back of one of the most tongue-twisting songs in the Broadway repertoire. He makes his Center Cabaret Series debut with three performances in May, and perhaps he might demonstrate his patter skills.

Doyle is a man of many talents. On Broadway he has acted in The Book of Mormon, War Horse, and Spring Awakening, among others. As a songwriter, he has released two EPs and a full-length album. He created a web comic. And he’s also a frequent guest at cabaret venues including 54 Below and Joe’s Pub, often with one of his Broadway buddies and his band, The Whiskey 5. He loves to include stories about his family and friends in his shows. “Doyle is a master of storytelling, he is just so relaxed and personable,” says thefrontrowcenter.com. “It’s as if we are all in his home, sitting with him at his table enjoying his company.”

Doyle was cast in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company—a version that was a gender and sexual identity switch—and won his Tony in the role of Jaime. In the show, “Jaime” is engaged to be married and sings the very speedy “I’m Getting Married” in which his character panics about his upcoming nuptials. (Patti LuPone was also in the production and they became good friends.) Although directed by Marrianne Elliot, Sondheim was very involved and gave his blessing to the show. “He was able to come to the first preview [before he passed away],” says Doyle. “He was so generous, so kind and supportive.”

Last fall Doyle premiered in a limited run of a new musical in Birmingham, England: Sinatra the Musical with Doyle in the lead role. The reviews were raving. “Matt Doyle takes on the iconic role of Frank Sinatra and immediately wins the audience with

his smoldering looks and incredible voice,” says the Birmingham Mail

“More than doing justice to a lead role of such titanic proportions is Matt Doyle whose portrayal is endorsed by Tina Sinatra herself, youngest of the singer’s three children and part of the production team,” says the Warwickshire Review. “Doyle has a voice of silk, accomplished acting skills (he even has Sinatra’s mannerisms down pat).”

There’s no word yet if the show will be coming to Broadway, but maybe Doyle will treat Center audiences to a Sinatra song or two. You heard him here first.

Aloha in a pa’akai shaker

Most people think of salt as something to sprinkle on French fries, or to be avoided altogether. In The Pa’akai We Bring, audiences are introduced to the relationship Native Hawaiians have with salt—pa’akai. It’s considered a food, medicine, a sacrament, and a precious gift. The show, aimed at a multigenerational audience, comes to the Family Series in May.

This original production by Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) mixes ancient stories, hula, live music, original songs, and lots of audience participation as it follows a family with multiple generations of salt farmers on the island of Kaua’i. It’s a performance served up with lots of aloha.

Pa’akai means “solidified sea water” in the Hawai’ian language. “In Hawai’i we have a special relationship with pa’akai,” HTY artistic associate Moses Goods told Broadwayworld.com. “We live our lives surrounded by salt water,” says Goods. “We use salt to cleanse and purify, and we value salt as a treasured gift. Salt traditions are unique to every culture and we’d like to share a bit of ours with your family.” Originally from the island of Maui, Goods’ theatrical storytelling pieces are strongly rooted in Native Hawai’ian culture.

This production is inspired by real-life stories of the 26 Native Hawai’ian families who tend the Hanapēpē salt beds on Kaua’i. Goods shared that the show’s creative team spent time on Kaua’i learning from traditional salt harvesters before creating this project. The story is led by Native Hawaíians and seeks to honor the culture, language and traditions of this beautiful place.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth was founded in 1955, four years before Hawai’i achieved statehood. This

professional theater works on the philosophy that it can help audiences learn to experience other cultures which in turn expands their imaginations and enriches their lives.

All Family Series performances include one hour of free, fun activities for families to enjoy together before the show. The Center offers these enriching experiences to provide young people and their families with opportunities to play creatively, explore the themes and content of the performances and connect with other patrons at the Center. Pre-show activities have included puppet making, drum circles, conducting lessons and even a silent disco. Don’t miss out!

Seth Rudetsky and Lillias White: hang out with your new best friends

Seth Rudetsky knows all there is to know about Broadway. Lillias White has lived it all. Together, this up-close concert and conversation by these two stars will charm audiences with entertaining stories and show-stopping songs.

Center cabaret fans who have been thrilled by White in previous engagements will be delighted to experience once again the “one-ofa-kind performer who combines the sass of a classic blues mama with the skill of a Broadway star,” says The New York Times. Her Broadway experience takes her all over, from a Tony Award for her performance in The Life to appearances in Cats, Dreamgirls, Chicago, and Fela!

Most recently White starred on Broadway as Hermes in Hadestown, the first woman to take the role. White gets a thrill from creating a new role, and in this case, convincing the director to let her take on something that had previously always been considered a “male” part. She’s on stage and moving throughout the production. “You have to give 100% every time,” she told Cultural Attache, “because every night, every show, there’s someone who’s never seen it before.”

White’s stellar Broadway and television career will be front and center for the Center audience. “I love a good love song and a ballad,” she told LondonTheatre.co.uk. “I love taking regular songs and ‘Lilliasizing’ them, adding a Caribbean beat, a reggae beat. And a good Hoagy Carmichael song can never go wrong!”

It’s safe to say that Rudetsky is obsessed with

everything Broadway. He is an actor, musician, comedy writer, pianist (he has accompanied Pattu LuPone in concert), fundraiser, producer, and radio host, currently presenting Seth’s Big Fat Broadway on Sirius XM. What he doesn’t know about Broadway theater history and trivia would fit on the head of a pin. When asked by Broadway World how he can remember so much, he told them, “I think I just love Broadway and I have a giant space in my mind for my favorite tales.”

This won’t be the first time he has sat down with White. “She is, by far, one of my favorite Broadway stars,” he says. “I first saw her when she played Effie in the late ‘80s Broadway revival of Dreamgirls. I loved it!” He has seen her now in several different productions and was playing in the orchestra when White was in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. “She brought the house down in the second act,” he told Broadway World.

Rudetsky describes this engagement as a Q&A with laughter and a concert. White will sing songs you know, and probably a few unexpected tunes. Rudetsky will winkle out the essence of White and her talent. In the intimate space of Samueli Theater, it will be almost like having them in your living room.

Aladdin by the numbers

Aladdin is a thrilling musical that will carry you into a world of daring adventure, classic comedy, and timeless romance. Set in the fictional Arabian city of Agrabah, this is the story of a poor young man who is granted three wishes by a genie he has released from a lamp. It unleashes its magic here at the Center next month. But there is something you should know about Aladdin. Well, maybe a few things.

The costumes!

• All the costumes for Aladdin are custom made by hand. The fabrics and trim have been sourced from 13 countries around the world, including Tahiti and Morocco.

• Jasmine’s wedding dress weighs 12 pounds, due to all the beading.

• Speaking of beading, more than 2 million Swarovski crystals were used by the costume department. Every costume in the finale sparkles with them: Each one uses 8,644 crystals.

• During one performance, 102 costume changes take place in under one minute.

The sets!

• The set weighs the equivalent of four and a half double-decker buses—that’s more than 50 tons. That includes flying scenery, nearly 300 lights, automated effects, hydraulic lifts, and lots of silk and gold fabric.

• The show features 84 illusions and effects, including that magic carpet.

• Flying carpets are not easy to ride. Jade Ewen, who played Jasmine in the London production, says, “It’s a lot harder than you think. You’re sitting and the carpet is moving and your stomach is tensing… but you’ve got to sing and keep your voice smooth. But you get the hang of it.”

14 SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS

The music!

• The original 1992 film had songs by superstar composer Alan Menken and won an Oscar for Best Original Score. But not all of the songs he wrote for Aladdin actually made it into the film. While all the film’s original songs are in the musical, Menken suggested they also use the seven cut songs. Producers agreed, and they were added in. “I think that’s one of the keys to the success of the show,” he told Digital Spy.

• The tap-dancing musical number “Friend Like Me” is an homage to Busby Berkeley’s 1933 classic movie musical 42nd Street

Last but not least!

• The show has been seen by more than 15 million audience members worldwide.

• The critics love it. “Broadway magic,” says The Wall Street Journal. The New York Times calls it “fabulous and extravagant,” while NBC-TV says, “It’s exactly what you wish for!”

But we can’t tell you how the Flying Carpet works. Some things just have to remain a mystery.

MASTERING THE ART OF THE BEDROOM

95 YEARS OF SWEDISH EXCELLENCE

Since 1926, four generations of the Ljung family have aspired to produce the most comfortable and technologically advanced beds on the market.

As a privately-owned family business, our only responsibilities are to our customers, to the integrity of our product, and to our commitment to sustainable thought and practices.

Over the last 95 years our beds have been thoroughly vetted and tested – by the scientific community, but more importantly, by four generations of customers worldwide.

The results are clear. We have a technology that works and the history to prove it.

The next generation of dance is at the Center

Pas de Deux from Don Quixote. The school’s Pre-Professional students will perform, including new works by the school’s new artistic director, Susan Brooker.

You don’t have to be a member of the chapter to attend the event but be warned: Once you watch these dancers and experience the magic being created at the school, you’ll want to join immediately.

The Chapters of The Guilds of the Center raise money to benefit the Center and all its programming and community events—except one.

“The Pas de Deux Chapter is unique here in that it is specifically dedicated to raising funds to support the training of the students at the ABT Gillespie School at the Center,” says Cyja Kelly, former chairwoman of the chapter and current board member.

On Sunday, April 14, Pas de Deux presents An Evening of Dance. This fundraiser is not just another recital. The chapter will host members, donors, and guests with light refreshments and drinks, and ABT school leadership and students will mingle with guests and talk about their work. This will be followed by a special dance presentation.

Performances will include five ABT company dancers from New York: Anabel Katsnelson, Carlos Gonzalez, and Rachel Richardson will perform the Pas de Trois from Swan Lake, and Lea Fleytoux and Jarod Curley will perform the

The Pas de Deux Chapter was formed shortly after the school opened in 2015. “The chapter provides important support for students, including full and partial tuition assistance awards to many students,” says Constance Griffiths, the new chair of the chapter. “Chapter support also includes vital components that enhance the ABT School education, including master classes, talkbacks with guest dance artists, costumes, and other expenses not covered by tuition. This helps alleviate additional financial obligations to their families, so students can focus on their training.”

Without chapter assistance there would be talented students who could not afford to attend the prestigious school and train for professional ballet careers.

If you love dance, joining this Guilds chapter is an opportunity to take part in exclusive events and discussions that will expand your knowledge of the dance world. You’ll meet new friends who share your love of ballet and want to support the next generation of dance. Chapter meetings are held in alternate months, with significant social events planned around workshops and school performances.

New members are always welcome. To join or make a donation, scan the QR code below. To reserve your tickets for An Evening of Dance or for more information contact us at ocpasdedeux@gmail.com.
