Stripes are in fashion

IT’S GHOSTS GALORE when Beetlejuice and his dead friends visit Segerstrom Hall in Beetlejuice: The Musical next month.

Although based on the popular 1988 movie starring Michael Keaton and Geena Davis, this musical focuses on Lydia, daughter of widower Charles. Their wife and mother has recently passed away and Dad already has a new girlfriend and plans for the run-down house that he and Lydia have moved into. The couple who had previously lived there died in a freak accident and, unbeknownst to the buyer, are now ghosts who are trying to remain in the house but have a hard time being scary.

New York magazine calls the show “Rowdy, cheeky and gleefully irreverent,” while The Hollywood Reporter says, “A riotous, rambunctious spectacular production with huge laughs, full-throttle performances and a mischievous sense of fun.”

The show pays homage to the film, but it’s Lydia who makes Beetlejuice: The Musical appealing to a younger generation of theater goers. Lydia is a depressed goth girl who has a nihilistic outlook on life. Like her peers, she is socially aware, leaves her emotions exposed and believes she is misunderstood. She misses her mother terribly and wishes she could come back from the dead. Beetlejuice wants to return to the land of the living and quickly realizes Lydia can see his physical body. She could be his way back from the netherworld if he can just get her to say his name three times in a row.

“Updating itself for Gen Z,” says the Denver Post.

“Beetlejuice is a zany, old-school romp with charm and visual delight, re-creating movie spectacle while adding its own tricks.” Audiences will love the haunted house and special effects, the wigs and make-up, and the magic that makes one wonder what we just witnessed.

The show has been a huge hit, so don’t be surprised if the couple sitting next to you are wearing black-and-white striped suits and green hair. They’re just big fans of Beetlejuice. Or are they? You never know...

You are what you eat... says Michael Pollan

MICHAEL POLLAN CARES a lot about the food we eat and sums it up in seven words. “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” He follows that by suggesting we eat only foods that would be recognized in 1905. (He wrote a book about that.) He also says, “The whiter the bread, the sooner you’ll be dead.”

Pollan will be the featured author in the Center’s In Conversation series on April 29.

He has written books and articles about a broad range of thoughts and theories concerning food, agriculture, industrial farming, and other woes of our modern world. But farming is just one of his many interesting topics that cover a plenitude of subjects: American food supply; the war on drugs; why gardens weren’t always about pretty flowers; psychedelics; taxes on soda (he’s pro); pigs; and germs. That’s just an overview.

Pollan has produced nine books which collectively have earned countless awards and places on The New York Times best-sellers lists. He is most well-known for The Omnivore’s Dilemma. In this book, Pollan suggests that nature and the human food industry are at odds when it comes to feeding our country. Industrial agriculture can upset the ecology of our food sources, causing farmers to resort to more and more pesticides that in turn affect the ecosystem and the food that is grown on that land.

Food Rules began with his hunch that the wisdom of our great-grandparents might have more helpful things to say about how to eat well than listening to the government’s advice. He later expanded his rules to include additional ideas that help us eat more sensibly. Putting a vase of flowers on the table (it creates a relaxing environment and therefore better digestion), ordering the small portion when dining out, and being mindful of what you eat. Ultimately, preparing a meal doesn’t have to be complicated, and food is as much about pleasure and communion as it is about nutrition and health.

Pollan is the co-founder of the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics, and his most recent book is This is Your Mind on Plants. Pollen looks at three plant drugs— opium, caffeine, and mescaline—and why some cultures use them in an affirmatory way while many Western cultures go to great lengths— not very successfully—to outlaw and create taboos around them even though some of these have had positive socio-cultural impacts.

This will be a fascinating look at plants and food in a way that most of us don’t usually contemplate. You might just go home and toss out that loaf of white bread.

Czech out this quartet

THE BENNEWITZ QUARTET is a Czech ensemble considered one of the leading quartets among a younger generation of musicians. It is particularly known for the warmth, maturity and understanding it brings to its repertoire and for exceptionally fine playing. For this Center debut it brings a program of Haydn, Janacek, and two pieces by Schumann. For one of the Schumann works it will be joined by Russian pianist Arsentiy Kharitonov

The Bennewitz came to international attention when it won two leading chamber music competitions: the triennial Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and the Premio Paolo Borciani in Regio Emelia, Italy. The quartet is now celebrating 25 years together and have given concerts in major venues around the world.

Haydn is one of their favorite composers, and the program includes his String quartet Op. 33, No. 5. One of the quartet’s violinists, Štepan Ježek says, “We aim to show a certain part of Haydn’s development as a composer. Sometimes I have the feeling that Haydn might have been so eagerly working on establishing the rules of composing classical music as to be able to profit from their constant breaching.”

The Schumann pieces are for piano, and Arsentiy Kharitonov will perform with the ensemble. He is currently teaching at the

University of North Texas, but is originally from St. Petersburg. He was a first-prize winner in the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition as well as the Rachmaninov Competition, and soon started his concert career.

Kharitonov was basically a self-taught musician, and eventually had to break the bad habits he had developed. He says now that it taught him a lot. “I did not study piano repertoire in any methodical chronology, as most pianists do. I always played music that interested me the most.” He goes on to explain that he was playing Rachmaninoff’s first piano sonata when other students were playing his second. “While Bach was in the spotlight of other students, I worked on Shostakovich.” No wonder the New York Observer says,” His style is unlike any of his contemporaries and harkens back to earlier times,” and goes on to praise his “technical fireworks, sumptuous tone, broad dramatic range and elegant phrasing.”

Gramophone says, “The Bennewitz Quartet is downright wonderful.” Don’t take their word for it. We say it will be an astonishing and extraordinary concert. Buy your ticket now.

Woolf Works: the spirit of Virginia Woolf

VIRGINIA WOOLF HAS A PLACE in the pantheon of 20th century Western literature. Now, her books are the inspiration for a new ballet, Woolf Works, choreographed by Wayne McGregor, resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is presenting the North American premiere, danced by American Ballet Theatre. This is McGregor’s first full-length work originally created on The Royal Ballet, which gave the ballet its world premiere.

When it premiered in London, Woolf Works received critical acclaim and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production while McGregor was awarded the Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best Classical Choreography.

Each of the three acts is based on a different Woolf book: Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando, and The Waves, and brings to life the ideas that she espoused about artistic life. “McGregor mirrors

Woolf’s modernist rejection of neatly ordered narrative in favor of heightened startling perspectives,” says Broadwayworld.com.

“We boiled the novels down to their essence,” says Uzma Hameed, dramaturge for the project. “We amplified everything that needed to be there to convey the feeling in the most direct and immediate way.”

“She reinvented how you read a novel, but Woolf Works is not a literal description of Woolf’s writing,” says McGregor. “The idea was to choreograph and design the piece in the spirit of Woolf’s writing, in an unfolding stream of consciousness, rather than as a literal translation of the novels’ narratives.“

McGregor has fashioned something much more compelling than an adaptation,” says theartdesk.com, “a distillation of three of the novels, one per act, each with a different ethos and sound world.

Mrs. Dalloway is the inspiration for Act 1. The title character is musing about her younger days as she prepares for a party at her home. How does one reconcile what could have been with what one has? World War I veteran Septimus is also haunted by his past even as he has returned from the trenches and to his waiting wife. They each will make different decisions about their lives.

Act 2 is inspired by Orlando. “This is a romp through 300 years of history,” says McGregor. “Woolf was very interested in science fiction and it suited my own alien aesthetic.” Laser beams are part of the scenery. The book opens with the birth of this nobleman in Elizabethan England, which serves as inspiration for costumes that echo Elizabethan ruffs and corsets. This is a fastmoving celebration and the dancing is electric.

Act 3 is based not only on the novel The Waves, but also Woolf’s essays and letters. Her characters were based on people she knew, including herself. McGregor describes it as colliding with the story of her growing old. She had suffered from deep depression throughout her life, and at that point Woolf felt there was no hope of her mental health improving. A voice reads her suicide note written to her husband. “Act 3 … was one of the most moving pieces of dance I have ever experienced,” says a reviewer for the Edinburgh Music Review. “This left me in awe of [McGregor’s] genius.”

It’s no surprise that Woolf Works has had rave reviews. The Observer says Woolf Works is “a beauty… a compellingly moving experience,” while the Edinburgh Music Review praises the “ravishing lyrical expression, storytelling working with cutting-edge technology.” It then summed up the experience: “For an audience to see new work of this quality demonstrates that ballet is not just

...one of the most moving pieces of dance I have ever experienced”
—Edinburgh Music Review

about reviving and reinventing the classics, but that an art form can develop and progress without losing the magnificence of the past.”

You can only see the North American premiere of this extraordinary ballet at the Center next month. This is a rare opportunity to experience McGregor’s compelling work danced by one of the leading dance companies in the world.

How to teach students to move like fish

OVER THE YEARS, Segerstrom Center for the Arts has hosted numerous workshops to train teachers in how to best use the arts in their classrooms. At the intersection of two of the Center’s educator professional development offerings we met Gabriel Costa, a transitional kindergarten (TK) teacher at Frank Vessels Elementary School in Cypress.

Arts: Avenues to Learning, a partnership with California State University Fullerton (CSUF) and Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS), are offered by the Center’s education department to help teachers become well versed in using the arts in their classroom curriculum. Gabriel has taken part in both programs, and in his current teaching position is an “arts integration” success.

Arts: Avenues to Learning is a day-long workshop that was an impactful part of his studies. Students participate in a variety of hands-on sessions in dance, music, theater, and/or visual arts guided by Center professional teaching artists. The students learn strategies for arts integration and how to reinforce crosscurricular connections.

old, so we could encourage our students to loosen up,” says Gabriel. “It helps them relax and feel comfortable with their classmates and the activities.”

“This was an amazing program,” says Gabriel of the program, which started at the Center in 2012. “It highlighted diversity in the arts and the many ways the arts can help us in teaching other subjects. I learned so much from this.”

Gabriel recalls how the student teachers learned creative ways to boost the confidence of their students through the arts. “We had to learn how to be silly and goofy like an 8-year-

Gabriel graduated from CSUF with a combined master’s degree and teaching credential in 2020 and three years later was hired by Vessels for the 2023-2024 school year. In September 2023, his school asked him to attend the Center’s Year 3 DMIS professional development day. This is continuing support for DMIS schools, with teachers attending a one-day development session in the second and third years of the school’s DMIS program.

Vessels school leadership quickly noticed the

creativity and artistic strategies Gabriel brought to his classroom and invited him to assist with the after-school preparations and rehearsals for the school’s DMIS production. Vessels is producing Finding Nemo KIDS, a new offering based on the popular movie about a father fish’s search for his missing son.

Each year Segerstrom Center selects four Title 1 elementary schools for the DMIS program to create a sustainable musical theater program. The schools receive performance rights to their chosen musical, educational support materials and training for school faculty to lead the program. Over 17 weeks, students and teachers work with Center professional teaching artists at after-school sessions, learning, rehearsing, and performing scenes, songs and dance numbers as well as creating sets and costumes.

Through this process, students learn a wide spectrum of skills including creativity, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. They develop self-confidence and strengthen speaking and reading skills while learning musical theater techniques. The program aims to strengthen schools’ arts programming and develop partnerships among students, faculty, parents and the greater community as they work together.

Gabriel helps students with acting and singing, giving encouragement, and jumps in

anywhere else he is needed on the set. “I really enjoy the acting component and helping these ‘fishes’ practice how to move. We are now finetuning ‘fishy’ facial expressions and teaching the kids how to project their voices,” says Gabriel. He sees his involvement in the after-school program as an opportunity to pass along the theater spark to new students.

“I love the message of DMIS,” says Gabriel. “Everyone learns to work together. Whether the children are actors or working backstage, they all play an important part in making the show a success. They gain a sense of pride about their work and creativity.”

Gabriel looks forward to continuing his work with Vessels’ DMIS program. And in a few years, it will be his previous students working with Gabriel to learn how to construct a set and move like a fish.

Ébène Quartet: jazzing up the chamber ensemble

THE STRING QUARTET musicians raise their instruments and bows, ready to begin to play … a jazz standard. But didn’t this classical quartet just play Beethoven?

This is the Ébène Quartet, making its return to the Center Concert Series. The New York Times describes them as “a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band.”

For their Center concert, they will play Haydn, Bartók, and Schubert. A reviewer for Bachtrack had heard Ébène’s recordings of Haydn and Schubert, but how would it sound in real life?

“I needn’t have worried,” says Alexander Hall. “These players perform almost telepathically; without nods or gestures they will their individual voices into an immediate blend which stuns by way of its immaculate intonation.”

The ensemble is barely 25 years old and has been showered with prestigious prizes. Five years after it was formed it won the 2004 ARD Music Competition. The next year it won the Belmont Prize and two years after that was the prizewinner of the prestigious BorlettiBuitoni Trust. In 2019 it was honored as the first ensemble to receive the Frankfurt Music Prize. So, it’s not surprising that the ensemble is considered one of the leading quartets playing today.

Recently a documentary “shed light on some of the qualities that make the Ébène Quartet what it is: a brutally honest, musically high-minded, self-critical musical body always in search of perfection,” says Classicstoday.com.

It’s not unusual for musicians to be interested in other types of music besides their own. But it’s highly unusual for a classical string quartet to incorporate a completely different style into their work. The Ébène’s interest in jazz music started at university when hours of practicing made them look for the occasional distraction. Improvising

jazz and other genres of music did the trick and later became their trademark. They have even been known to play a Disney tune or two.

Classicstoday.com writes that many types of music have greatly improved over the last 100 years, but none so much as string quartets. And even with this embarrassment of riches, “The Ébène stands out as one of the supreme string quartets of our time, raising already high standards … especially in terms of subtlety and elegance.”

“What makes the Ébène Quartet truly special, besides the unbridled enthusiasm and the intensity with which they approach the classical repertoire, is their openness to other types of music that informs their interpretation of the canon,” says Bachtrack.

Enjoy the performance but do stay for the encore. You never know what “other types of music” they might play. Whatever it is, it will be stunning.

What is your legacy?

NO ONE IS IMMORTAL. But how many think about what their last bequests will be? Bequests demonstrate what was important to someone in their lifetime. Center supporter Bart Asner has thought about this and firmly believes that a planned gift is essential to the future success and sustainability of the Center.

“My wife, Elizabeth, and I say that if something happened to us, we would have a philanthropic element in our trust that would explain the charities we want our financial resources to go to. The Center is a big part of that.”

Asner has always had a passion for the arts. While growing up in New York City he frequently attended Broadway shows, ballets, and symphony concerts. “It really became part of my life,” he says. “Culture and the arts are so important to me personally.”

He moved to Los Angeles, and then to Orange County, where he began attending performances at the Center. “I was first approached to be a donor by a wonderful woman named Shirley, who said, ‘Hey, I know you’re a season ticket holder, would you ever consider being a donor?’ It was really that simple. And over the years, I participated as a donor at different levels.” He points out that this is not just something for the very wealthy. “It wasn’t like I was able to always make huge donations, but I was able to give what I gave, and I had no idea how amazing the Center would ultimately become.”

The Asners have been Broadway subscribers since shortly after the Center opened. Bart sits on the Center’s board of directors and the couple attends Candlelight Concert, held every December: Last year’s event raised more than $5.3 million for community engagement and education programming. “We love the fact that the Center is involved in education for the community. We want to make sure that kids are exposed to the arts.

“It’s not a pleasant thing to think about myself and the ones we love not being here, but we all need to be thinking about that for ourselves, for our families, and for the community organizations that we love. I have a tremendous sense of pride in the fact that I helped build the Center back in the beginning,” Asner says. “It’s about what we are doing for the community, and we want to make sure that there is a future full of the arts.”

The Center’s Legacy Society recognizes and honors individuals who have shared their intent to contribute a planned gift to the Center. If, like the Asners, you have included the Center in your estate plans, please let us know.

For more information regarding the Legacy Society or free estate planning resources, please visit our website at scfta.giftlegacy. com or contact Elizabeth Kurila, senior director, gift planning strategies, at (714) 942-6275 or ekurila@scfta.org.

The Legacy Society recognizes and honors individuals who have shared their intent to contribute a future or planned gift to the Center. Please let us know if you have included the Center in your estate plan and would like to be invited to this year’s Legacy Society dinner with a featured performance of Funny Girl Tickets to the performance are provided.
