THANKYOU,DEACONROMOLO!

ThisDecember,wewillsay farewelltoDeaconRomolo Leone,apastoralassociateat St.MaryStudentParishfor morethan20years.Hehas touchedmanypeopleoverthe years,presidingatweddings andbaptisms,assistingwith baptismpreparation,and helpingmany,manycouples inmarriagepreparation sessions.Hehasalsobeen thestaffsponsorfortheLGBT group.

Atage89,Romolohasmanagedtokeepupwithtwojobs.His parishofserviceisSt.JosephCatholicParishinDexter, wherehehasworkedsincehewasordainedaDiocesan Deacon30yearsago(Oct.3,1992).

ForDeaconRomolo,faithisprettysimple.“Idon’thaveto understandeverything,”hesays,“Ijusthavetotrustthat God’sgotus,andheisn’tdroppingus.”

ManypeopleknowRomoloastheformerPhiladelphiacop whonevermissesachancetosharehisstoryabouthowGod pursuedhimandledhimonatotallydifferentpath–from policeworktoministry,fromtoughguyveneerto compassionatelistener.Tellinghisstoryisthebestwayto reachpeople–whetherit’saboutthemiraclesthathave happenedinhislife,orthewayGodhassomehowalways providedforhislargefamily.

“Thisworkisaboutspeakingwhat’sinmyheart,”hesays.“I sharemystories–that’sallIgot.”

That’seasytodo,hesays,becauseGodhasalwaysbeenso goodtohimandhiswife,Lorraine,whowillcelebrate60years ofmarriageinFebruary.His“story”isaboutrealizingthatGod hadsomethingdifferentinmindforhismarriage,forhiswork, andforhislifelonghappiness.

“Iwasascore-cardCatholic,”hesays.“IknewaboutGod,but itwasaGodwhowasoutthere,withahammer.”

RaisedbyhisItalian-Americanparentsintheoften-roughcity streets,heattendedNortheastCatholicHighSchool,servedin theU.S.AirForceduringtheKoreanWar,thenbecamea Philadelphiapoliceofficer,evenexperiencingabulletflying toocloseoverhisheadoneday.HebegantonoticethatGod answeredhisprayerswhileheworked.Thenheattendeda

“Cursillo”retreatandthat’swhenhereally“mettheLord,” hesaid.

“Therewassomethingaboutthatcall.Ibegantogetoutof beingalegalisticCatholic,andIbecameaCatholicwho looksatthelawandspirit–whoasks,what’sthespiritof thelaw?Basically,ourfaithisthis:Godlovesusandwe loveGod.Wescrewupandthat’sokaybecausewe’re gonnabewithGod.Caseclosed.It’snotascore-card game.”

Inspiredbyhiswife’sdeepfaith,hebegantogrowmore involvedinsharingaboutGod’sgreatlove.Whenheheard abouttheWordofGodcommunityhereinAnnArbor,heleft hisjobwiththepoliceforcein1973andmovedwithhis familytobepartofit.

“PeoplesaidIwascrazy,butIdidn’tcare,”hesaid.Andit allworkedout.Hefoundworkhere,servingasamanager ofmaintenanceandhousekeepingatGlacierHillssenior livinghomeformorethan20years.Healsostartedhisown businessincarpentryandmaintenance.

WhentheysettledinDexter,heattendedSt.Joseph CatholicChurch.Hispastortheresuggestedhestudytobe adeacon,whichheinitiallyresisted.Threeyearsofstudy andtrainingisn’teasywithagrowingfamily.Butagain,with Lorraine’sencouragement,hetookonthetaskandwas laterabletoworkatbothparishes.

Lifewasnevereasy,headds,especiallylosinghisson, Joe,inanaccident.Eventhroughgriefandfinancial struggles,heandtheirfamily(withninechildren)always movedforwardwithGod’shelpandgrace.“Wealways knewGodwaswithus,”hesays.

Hisfamilynowincludesninegrandchildrenandonegreatgrandson.Hislifeandhisministrywork,headds,hasbeen ajoyandhasfilledhimwithloveandgratitude.

“WhenyoulistentotheLordandyousayyestowhatthe Lordwantsyoutodo,theSpiritgrantsyousomuch happiness,happinessyoumightnotevenseeatfirst,”he says.“AllIcansayisthankyou,Lord.I’mjustfilledwith gratitude.”

Onbehalfoftheparishandallthosehehastouched throughtheyears,wealsosay,“Thankyou,Deacon Romolo,andmayGodblessyourretirementyears!”

Mymotherwasaworrier.Shewouldoften worryaboutourmeals,thecleanlinessofthe house,andofcourse,aboutthe whereaboutsofeachofherchildren.Ioften teasedheraboutthisandprayedshecould “chillout”abitmore.

I’mnotquitelikeher,butIdoworryifthere willbeenoughmoneytopayalltheparish bills.Perhapsmanyofyoufeelthesame aboutpayingyourhouseholdbills.Whenthe angelappearedtobothMaryandJoseph, thefirstwordswere“donotbeafraid,Godis withyou.”Iamalwaysdrawntothesewords becausetheyaresoconsoling.Godiswith us,donotbeafraid,Godwillprovide.Ijust needtotakethesewordstoheart.

AswepreparetocelebrateAdventand Christmas,Icontinuetofindmyselfgrateful andhappy.Itfeelslikeabustlingparish aroundhereagain,andit’ssogoodtosee peopleandfamiliesback.Iloveit–eventhe chaosofourFamilyFaithSundays!

Iwantedtoshareafewotherthingsgoing on:Wehave55teensinourConfirmation programandmorethan50U-Mstudentsare servingascatechists.Wewillonceagain provideChristmasgiftstoareaorganizations throughourAdventGivingTree.Wealso continuetosponsorarefugeefamilyfrom Hondurasandithasbeenajoytoseethem makingasafeandhappytransitiontotheir newliveshere.

Wehavewonderfulstudenteventsand opportunitiesforprayer,worshipand educationhere.it’snowonderIoftenIfind myselfonaSundayhappyandinaweofall thepeoplehere.Wearedefinitelyan eclectic,diverse,welcoming,andvibrant parish.

Forallyouhavedonetosupportour mission,wethankyou.It’sbeenabusyfall hereatourparish,butwearelooking forwardtothebeautyofAdventand Christmas.Aswethinkaboutthewonderof theIncarnation,that’salwaysourgoalhere–tobringChristintotheworld.Together,we rememberthewordsoftheangel–“Donot beafraid.”

The19thAnnotation:PrayingasSt.Ignatiussuggested

Thispastsummer,Fr.BobbyKarle wonderedwhatmighthappenifwe offeredtoleadagroupofpeople throughTheSpiritualExercisesinthe formofthe19thAnnotation(aversion thatwouldextendforalmostayearin person’sdailylife,ratherthana concentrated30-dayretreatformat).

Whathappenedwasanoverwhelming response!Fr.Bobbywasableto assembleateamoftrainedSpiritual Companionswhoaremeetingwiththe participants,andtheteamagreedona formatbasedonthebook,“TheIgnatian Adventure,”byKevinO’Brien,S.J.

“TherereallyseemstobeathirstforthiskindofIgnatianprayeropportunity,” hesaid.“It’sbeenreallyablessingtoseethecommitmentthatpeopleare making.”

Twelvepeopleareparticipatingintheretreat,committingtointensiveprayer eachday,talkingwithacompanionregularlyandjoininginafewgroup meetingstoshareabouttheexperience.Thegroupbeganmeetingin OctoberandwillcontinuethroughMay.

ConfirmationRetreat

InOctober,theparishwelcomed57teensforaday-longretreattoprepare fortheirConfirmationinApril.Asaservicecomponent,thegroupcreated blanketstodonatetothe“FleeceandThankYou”organization,which distributesthecolorfulblanketstohospitalizedchildren.

“Forme,ithasbeenwonderfultomeetandworkwiththeyoungpeopleof ourparish,andtoseehowmanyofthemhavesuchclearandprofound answersabouttheloveofGod,”saidElisaAlvarez,thenewTeen ConfirmationCoordinator.“Itshouldfilluswithhopeandjoy.”

WithhelpfromFr.Jim,andKarenFoster,FamilyMinistryCoordinator,the programalsodependsonthe13UofMstudentswhoserveascatechists. “Theyarekey,”Elisasays,“becausethankstotheirpassionforserviceand Christianauthenticity,theyareundoubtedlyanexampletofollowofhowto betruefollowersofJesusinthepresent.”

ParishionerpublishesnewIgnatianbook

LongtimeparishionerJimManneyhaspublishedanewbook:“What MattersMostandWhy,LivingtheSpiritualityofSt.IgnatiusofLoyola.” (NewWorldLibrary).

Jim,theauthorofmanybooksbasedonIgnatianSpirituality,has created365daysofreflectionsthathelptoanswerthepressing questionsaboutsatisfactioninourworkandrelationships.Eachday offersathoughtorquotefromaJesuit,aspiritualwriter,orSt.Ignatius himself,plusareflectionfordeeperthought.AresidentofAnnArbor, JimManneyhasalsoco-ledaSmallChurchCommunityonIgnatian SpiritualityatSt.Maryforthepastseveralyears.

Rememberingalloursaints

TheHispanic/LatinoMinistry,directedbyRosaLuz Postigo,hostedaparish-widecelebrationofDiadelos Muertos,orDayoftheDead.Withthebeautifulaltar insidethechurch,andintheatrium,theHispanic communitysharedtheirtraditionsforthisdayinmany countries:Mexico,Guatemala,Honduras,Ecuador,Peru, andothers.RosaLuzexplainedthatallthesecountries historicallyreceivedevangelizationfromSpainand mergedCatholictraditions(connectingtoAllSaintsand AllSoulsDay)withthePre-Hispanictraditions.

“Thecelebrationsaredesignedtokeepthemeaningof deathandeternallifetohelpeveryoneintheparish honorandrememberthosewehavelovedandlost,”she said.Thecelebrationalsoincludedagatheringon October30,completewithsweettreats,pandelos Muertos.Afterthat,thegroupbeganplanningforanother importantfeastinDecember:thenovenaandDayofOur LadyofGuadalupe.

PreparingstudentsinSpanish

TheH/LcommunityalsoparticipatedthisFallinSCCgroups(SmallChurchCommunitiestostudytheSunday readings),aswellaspreparing9studentsinSpanishforFirstCommunion.Thisministryalsohas8studentsinpreconfirmationclasses,plus12intheteen.Confirmationprogram.RosaLuzisalsoguidingtwoadultsinSpanish throughtheRCIAprocessthisyear.

Hearingmoreclearlyatmass

WiththehelpofmaintenancedirectorKrisKolevar,the parishwasabletoassistpeoplewithhearinglimitationsat Massesandothereventsinthechurch.Krisresearchedand helpedinstallournewAssistiveListeningSystem(ALS),which parishionerswereabletouseinlateJuly.Thesystemiseasy touseandallowspeopletodownloadanappontheir phonesandusetheirownearbudsduringMass.Thosewho don’thaveaccesstoaphonecanborrowadevicefromthe parishoffice.Kriswasalsoavailabletohelppeoplesetup

sometrainingtime,sothey’dbefamiliarwithhowtousethe system.

Oneparishionerwrotetotellusthatthenewsystemwas “transformative”forhim,sinceheoftenmissedalotofwhat wasbeingsaidatMass.“Theregularchurchsoundsystem madeeverythingsoundkindofsmearedtome,”hesaid. “TheALSsoundwassomuchclearer.Itwasamazing.”This parishionerespeciallywantedtothankthegenerousdonor whocontributedtothecostofthesystembuthaswishedto remainanonymous.

Alumnispotlight

DanDaly,S.J.,haspublisheda booktohelppeople rediscoverthegospelsin somenewandsurprising ways.Called“Jesusandthe BarbecuedFishBreakfast,” thebookispublishedby Twenty-ThirdPublications.

Thestoriesaretoldinthe Ignatiantradition,saysFr. Daly.“Iinvitethereadersto imaginethesceneswithme. Notingconnectionswithother storiesandreflectingonthe meaningisaformofIgnatian meditation.”

Fr.Dalyis“aproudgraduate” ofU-M,andhealsohelped withmasseshereatSt.Mary’s duringhistimeoncampus from1993to1997. Hehasservedasan accountingprofessoratRegis UniversityandBostonCollege and,morerecently,as provincetreasurerforJesuits USACentralandSouthern Province.Heenjoyspresiding andpreachingatparishesand universities,directingretreats, andleadingdaysofreflection.

Withalifelongaffinityfor Gospelstories,Danfrequently usesIgnatianImaginationto bringGospelstoriestolifefor himselfandothers.

What’snewinCampusMinistry?

ThursdaynightsarebustlingagainthisyearwithweeklyIg.nitegatherings. TheeveningsbeginwithMassat5:10p.m.,followedbyalightdinneranda talk.VariousthemeshaveincludedToolsforLivingaVirtuousLife,Catholic FaithandCommunity,plus“WhatisaJesuitParish?”

Otherstudentinitiativesincludeanewpro-lifestudentministry,whichmeets weekly.Thegrouphasmadebabyblankets,organizedababyregistryfora womanexperiencinghomelessness,andorganizedagrouptoattendthe MarchforLifeinJanuary.

StudentOutreach:Theparishhashostedmanyactivities,frominformal “CoffeeChats”toafootballwatchparty,andmeetingotherstudentsouton campuswithcidermilldonutsontheDiag.

FaithSharing:Manyotherundergradsarestrengtheningtheirfaithand makingnewfriendsaspartofour“Connect”groups.Withbothamen’sand women’sgroup,studentsaremeetingweeklytodiscussandshareabout theirfaithlives.Theyalsosetasidetimetopraytogetherandofcourse,get toknoweachotherandhavefuntogether.TheFallRetreatalsodrewnearly 60studentswithstudenttalks,prayerandactivitiesdesignedtofostera deeperencounterwithGod.

StaffUpdates

ConstanceHeskiaisournewofficemanager/communicationsdirector. Constance,whojoinedthestaffinMay,wasbornandraisedinFrance.She haslivedmorethan10yearsinMexico,soshespeaksSpanishfluently.She movedtotheUnitedStatesin2017becauseherhusbandhadaprofessional opportunity.Constanceisthemotherof5boys:ajuniorandafreshmanat HuronHighSchool,a7thgraderatTappanMiddleSchool,andtwin2nd gradersatStFrancis.Sheenjoystravelingwithherfamily,workingout, readingandcooking.

TravisDantzerisreplacingRyanMiglioreasmusicdirector.Travishasbeenactive intheparishsince2016.Asanundergradstudent,heparticipatedinthree AlternativeSpringBreaktrips,attendedretreatsandremains“theonlytwo-time timeSMSPRootBeerPongchampion.”Travisstartedplayingpianoforliturgiesin middleschool.HisfirstmusicministryworkatStMarywasthroughtheIg.nitemass hissophomoreyearandhehasbeentheaccompanistforthe2pmSpanishMass since2017.HeisnowaPhDCandidateinIntelligentSystemsEngineeringatthe UniversityofMichigan.HisresearchthroughtheDigitalWaterLabisfocusedon creatingsmartwatersystems.

ElisaAlvarez-MartinezisthecoordinatorofTeenConfirmation.Witha backgroundinbothartandCatholicdoctrineandtheology,Elisabrings organizationandcreativitytoherroleinworkingwiththisyear’sConfirmation group.Shehasmorethannineyearsofexperienceinleadingretreatsand programsfortheHispaniccommunity,includingtherecentBeBoldretreats. “I’mapersonwhobelievesintheimportanceofbuildingastrongcommunity andcreatingequalopportunitiesforall,thushelpingtobringaboutrealchange intheworld,”shesaid.

MaribelRosas-PalmaisthenewcoordinatorofHispanic/LatinoSacramental Preparation,helpingourSpanishspeakingchildrentoprepareforFirstCommunion andFirstReconciliation.Sheandherfamilyhavebeenparishionerssince2012and MaribelhasbeenactiveintheHispanic/Latinocommunity,servingasareaderatthe SpanishMass,andasatranslatorandinterpreter.Shehasalsobeenavolunteerfor StrangersNoLonger,helpingtosupportimmigrantwomen.“Creatingrelationships betweenmulticulturalparishionershasbeenanimportantgoalforourchurch,”said. Hernewroleinsacramentalpreparationwillhelpfamiliesandchildrenlearnthe faithwithinthecontextoftheirownculture.

Wealsowanttospeciallythankourpreviousstaffmembers,RyanMigliore,andMonicaOlide,whoare movingontonewopportunitiesandfamilyobligations.Bothwillremainconnectedtotheparish.

FaithDoingJustice

Astheweatherturnscold,theneedsofthecommunitybecomegreater,especiallythoseexperiencinghomelessnessor financialstruggles.Thepastcoupleofmonthshavebeenjam-packedfortheparish’sFaithDoingJusticeMinistry,ledby Fr.BobbyKarle,S.J.

InNovember,wehostedtherotatingMen’sOvernightShelterforaweek.NewmanHallwastransformedintoawarm spaceforupto25mentogatherforaneveningsnackandspaceforsleeping.

Thankyoutothe55volunteerswhoservedduringthesevennightsofhospitality,makingourguestsfeelwelcomed,safe andfed.Ourvolunteershadthistosayabouttheexperience:

•“Itwasagoodreminderthatthemenwesharedalittlebitoftimewithareapproximatelythesameasus;just regularpeople.”

•“BeingattheshelteropensyourmindandhearttoadeeperawarenessofGod…andhelpsustoseewhatweall haveincommon.”

OnDecember3,parishionersheadedoutfortheFeastDayofService,givingtheirtimeandtalentsatseveralarea agencies,andalsoinFlint.Fr.Bobbyhelpedtoorganize90parishionerswhoservedat10sitesthroughoutthearea.The FeastDayofServiceisanannualeventdesignedtohonorourpatron,Mary,bysayingyestoGod’scallforjusticeand mercy.Participantscelebratedatamorningmass,sharedlunch,thenheadedouttoserve.

AlsoinDecember,theparishcollected,organized,anddeliveredhundredsofgiftsaspartoftheAdventGivingTree project.Ourverygenerousparishionersandstudentsdonatedgiftsthatweredeliveredtochildren,familiesandfriendsin needat12organizations.

Thelightshinesinthedarkness.

(John1:5)“WhatareyourNewYear’s resolutions?”Thisquestionmaymake youcringebecause,yes,it’sthattime ofyearagain!Atthesametime,New Year’sresolutionscanbeexciting becausetheyemphasizehowweare standingonthecuspofanew beginning.2022isover,andnowwe canstartafresh.Today’sGospel readingisaboutnewbeginningstoo. Butthesenewbeginningsarenot resolutionsthatwemustaccomplish. Instead,thefocusisonwhatJesus wantstoaccomplishforus.Heis readytoshinehislightintonewareas ofdarknessinourhearts.AsMessiah andRedeemer,heisreadytohelpus overcomenewareasofsinandbring usintoanewfreedomfrom oppression.Thisisthe“powerto becomechildrenofGod”thatJesus givestoeveryonewhoacceptshim (John1:12).It’sheavenlypower,the divinegracetohelpusdowhatwe couldneverdoonhumanenergy alone.It’sthepowertoobey,the gracetoforgive,andtheinspirationto serve.Thatpoweristhere,waitingfor you,simplybecauseGodlovesyou.

Youdon’thavetoearnit;youjust havetoacceptitandlearnhowto cooperatewithit.Godisonyourside! Hewantstomakeyouholy!ThisNew Year’sEve,takesometimetolisten forGod’svoice.Tellhim,“Lord,I dedicatethisyeartoyou.Givemea focusfor2023.”Hemaybringa Scriptureversetomind,orhemay impressaspecificwordonyourheart, like“grace,”“boldness,”“patience,”or “peace.”Writethatwordorthatverse someplacewhereyoucanfindit,and revisititoverthecomingmonths.As youwalkthroughtheyear,seehow thiswordappliestoyourlife.And whenyoucometoNewYear’sEve nextyear,lookbackandseehowyou havegrownandhowthatonewordor versehasopenedyourhearttothe Lordmore.Thenrejoicebecauseyou aretakingonJesus’imageeven more—allbecauseofhispowerat workinyou!“Jesus,Iwelcomeyour workinmethiscomingyear.Iwant thisyeartobeatimeofgrowthinmy journeywithyou.”

ANNUALreport 2021-2022FISCALYEARINREVIEW

St.MaryoperatesonfiscalyearofJuly1throughJune30.Weendedthe2021-2022fiscalyearwithnetincomeof $112,468,howeverthatdidinclude$11,881fromemployeeretentioncreditsthatwewereeligibleforduetothe pandemic.

Revenue(notincludingtheretentioncredits)was$100,588lowerthanbudgetandoverallexpenseswere$201,175less thanbudget.DonationstoSundayofferingandtheannualfundwerehigherthanbudgetedwhileothersourcesofrevenue werelowerthanbudgeted.Whilethemajorityofsavingsinexpensescanbeattributedtolowerstaffcosts,wealso experiencedsavingsinprogrammingcostsaswewerenotfullyopenforagoodportionoftheyearduetoCOVID-19.We didspendsomeofthesesavingsonreplacingtheoven/stoveinthekitcheninNewmanHallandalsoreplacingmoreofour computerssoonerthanscheduled.

Wearesoappreciativetohavehadtwofiscalyearsinarowwithapositivenetincome(2020-2021netincomewithout thePPPloanforgivenesswas$128,662).WewereagaingratefulandhumbledbythefactthatdonationstoSunday offeringandtheannualfundremainedstrongduringthepandemic.Welookforwardtoseeingwhathappensinthe20222023fiscalyear.

Wearealreadyenjoyingofferingmoreprogrammingasitfeelslikeweareestablishinganew“normal”asstudentsand parishionersreturntoSt.Mary.Thankyou!
