STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

“We become what we receive”

Dear St. Mary Student Parish Community,

As we enter into this new academic year, our Welcome Team, Peer Ministry Interns, Campus Missionary Disciples, staff, and countless volunteers have served as the face of Christ and the loving presence of the Lord for the members of the Class of 2027, transfer students, graduate students, and many others, who we have welcomed into our community. Through their reless efforts, we have been able to witness the growth and building up of the body of Christ here at St. Mary, centered around the celebra on of the Eucharist, where we seek to recognize Christ’s presence in one another as we gather for Mass.

Pope Francis explains how, “the Eucharist is God’s response to the deepest hunger of the human heart, the hunger for authen c life because in the Eucharist Christ himself is truly in our midst to nourish, console and sustain us on our journey.” We are now 3 months into the Year of Parish Revival of the Na onal Eucharis c Revival, which is, “a three-year ini ave sponsored by the Bishops of the United States to inspire and prepare the People of God to be formed, healed, converted, united, and sent out to a hur ng and hungry world through a renewed encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist –the source and summit of our Catholic faith.”

With regards to the Eucharist, Pope Francis emphasizes that, “the love we celebrate in this sacrament cannot be kept to ourselves but demands to be shared with all.” The Holy Father notes that, “we cannot truly understand or live the meaning of the Eucharist if our hearts are closed to our

brothers and sisters, especially those who are poor, suffering, weary or may have gone astray in life.” For when we receive the body and blood, soul and divinity of Our Lord in the Eucharist, the Pope describes how, “We become what we receive a living Eucharist…[the] body of Christ,” we become, “the real and loving presence of the Lord,” in our world.

Our newly-formed Liturgy, Worship, and Outreach team, composed of lay and Jesuit staff members from St. Mary has sought to ensure that our vibrant liturgies are welcoming to all, through ideas like introducing ourselves at the start of Mass and expanding to all our Masses the Spanish Mass tradi on of celebra ng monthly birthdays. We have also expanded our offerings for Adora on of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and will soon be announcing some talks here at the parish on the Eucharis c Revival. These efforts as well have helped us to strengthen and build up the body of Christ here at St. Mary.

As we are all members of the body of Christ, we are each called to build up the body of Christ in our own way, through ongoing forma on in the faith; through ac vely giving of our me, talent, and treasure; and through our service to those most in need in our community. Given that we are gathered as one in the body of Christ, we are also called to seek reconcilia on with those with whom we are estranged, to build bridges with those who may not see the world as we do, and to be enriched by the variety of Catholic cultures and tradions of those who have found a home here at St. Mary. May the Lord in the Eucharist inspire us to build up the body of Christ!

St. Mary Student Parish is a welcoming, Inclusive, caring, and diverse Catholic community, uni ng residents and students.

We are Christ-centered with the Eucharist as the source of holiness in our vibrant liturgical life.

Inspired by Igna an spirituality, we live a faith that does jus ce, reaching out to the marginalized. As an apostolic parish, we are commi ed to ongoing forma on of Chris an witness, discipleship, and leadership.
