STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

HISTORY OF HISPANIC/LATINO MINISTRY AT ST MARY STUDENT PARISH BY ROSA LUZ POSTIGO, HISPANIC MINISTRY COORDINATOR On the occasion of the centenary of our Parish of Saint Mary Student parish, we want to share with you the history of the crea on of the Hispanic Ministry that has been serving our community in Spanish for almost 25 years.

out to our community. Later, other fathers learned Spanish (Father Dan Reim S.J. even went to Bolivia for a while to improve his Spanish). At that me the pastor was Father Tom McClain, who was the first Jesuit pastor (2005-2009) of St. Mary.

This is an interview with one of the founders of the Hispanic community of our parish: Leo Brito, parishioner and leader from Ecuador, South America.

R.L. Who were the first Hispanic leaders?

Rosa Luz: Leo, how did the Hispanic community begin in St Mary´s and when was the first mass celebrated in Spanish? Who were the founders? Leo: In 1999, a group of Hispanic students from the University of Michigan and resident parishioners of St. Mary had the desire to hear the mass in their na ve language and under the auspices of Father Cecilio Reyna, they began the Hispanic Ministry and St Mary celebrated a mass in Spanish for them with their help. Then, the Spanish-speaking community in the Washtenaw area learned that Mass was being celebrated in Spanish and began a ending. At that me, the pastor was Father Tom Firestone before the Jesuit priests came to Ann Arbor. The first years there was only Spanish mass during the school year. When Father Cecilio le , we had to bring in priests from Detroit to celebrate the mass, Father Tom Florek S.J. came frequently, Father Tim Nelson also traveled from Flint to celebrate mass in Spanish. A er 2 years, we had a town hall with Father Tom Firestone and representa ves from other parishes to decide the future of the Hispanic Ministry not only at St Mary’s but throughout Washtenaw County. At that mee ng it was decided that the ministry at St. Mary should con nue throughout the year, including the summer. At first we only had the leadership group (about 6 people) and a dozen worshipers.

L.B.: Among the early leaders of the Hispanic community were: Leo Brito (Ecuador), Gloriana Echandi (from Costa Rica), Ana Montero (PhD student from Spain), Tania JustavinoBuendía, from Panama), Dr. Silvia Pedraza (Cuban, professor at the University of Michigan), Luis Vázquez (student, from Puerto Rico), Mercedes Rubio (student) and Bob Balicki who joined us a few years later and has been an altar server and coordinator un l today. R.L. What me was the mass celebrated in Spanish and who was the first coordinator of the Hispanic Ministry? L.B.: At first the Spanish mass was at 1:30 pm and a er a few years we changed it to 2 pm. The first Hispanic ministry coordinator and staff at St Mary was Sue Waters. And when Father Ben Hawley S.J. was the pastor in 2010, the service and support to the Hispanic community was expanded, especially to immigrants, with Leonor Kromis and later Amy Ketner as coordinator of the Hispanic Ministry, both worked relessly helping many Spanish-speaking families and that work con nues un l the present day.

R.L. When did the Jesuits arrive at Saint Mary and who was its first Jesuit pastor? L.B. Shortly a er, Jesuits arrived at the Parish, Father Dennis Glasgow S.J., who knew Italian, learned Spanish and somemes confused Italian with Spanish, was really trying to reach

SCC GROUPS BEGIN THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 5TH. A great way to enrich your prayer life during Lent is to join one of our Small Church Communi es (SCCs)! SCC groups will meet for seven weeks to discuss faith, God’s presence in our world, as well as the meaning of the Sunday scripture readings. We have groups to fit most schedules, as well as special interests, including a Spanish speaking group, an Igna an Spirituality topic, and a group studying “Just Faith” social jus ce issues. Here’s what one group member had to say about the SCC experience: “The Holy Spirit was clearly present in our discussions, bringing great richness to our sharing, bringing each person’s uniqueness to our group. This brought far greater insight to the weekly Scripture passages that we reviewed, making the readings at the Sunday liturgy more powerful and meaningful.”

Igna an Focus on Prayer One of the SCCs will be a five-part series of guided discussions on prayer. The sessions will address how we can become more transparent in our conversa ons with God. In our prayer prac ce do we filter certain topics in our conversa on with God? What is it that we tell God? Igna an Spirituality is at the heart of these sessions reminding us that God’s love is uncondi onal. Each session is based on chapters from the book “Praying the Truth” by William Barry, SJ. E a MacDonagh-Dumler will lead the in-person sessions beginning on Wednesday, Feb 21 with the topics of “Prayer as Rela onship” and “Prayer and Friendship”. Addi onal topics from the book will be discussed on the following Wednesday evenings: Feb 28, March 6, March 13, and March 20, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. If you decide to register for this Lenten SCC group, you will need to purchase a copy of the book: Praying the Truth by William A. Barry.

Faith and Racial Jus ce SCC Parishioners Lisa Hirsch and Karen Thomas will co-facilitate a special topic SCC based on materials from the JustFaith organiza on. Called Faith and Racial Jus ce: Changing Systems and Structures, this is the 3rd series in the JustFaith program. The group will meet for nine sessions to help people formulate their own Chris an-rooted responses to racism in their churches, workplaces, and communi es. The JustFaith group will meet in-person on Thursdays from 7-9pm on the following dates. February 15 and 22 March 7, 14, and 21 April 4, 11, 18, and 25 Par cipants will be asked to read materials and watch videos between sessions. The parish is contribu ng to part of the fee, but par cipants are asked to cover the book purchases (@$40). For more informa on, contact lisahirsch38@gmail.com or karenbthomas2@gmail.com. Job’s cry of hopelessness stands in marked contrast to the hope of those who put their trust in Jesus, who “heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds”. Such are the blessings of the good news.

PLEASE THANK OUR SPONSORS!

Jesus manifests the powerful, healing love of God by curing the leper who was forced to live under severe restric ons by Jewish legisla on. He turned to Jesus in his need and was filled with joy. We are called to imitate the healing and compassionate Jesus.
