CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
VOLUNTEERING AT THE WARMING CENTER CHANGED MY LIFE BY SILVANA GRAF, VOLUNTEER AT DAYTIME WARMING CENTER I will not give money to beggars on the street. I’m usually in midated by their presence. I fear that cash given directly to them might go to feed addic ons, and I’m not helping in a meaningful way. This may not always be true, but I prefer to give fruit or nuts to people asking for money. Addi onally, I give cash donaons to reputable ins tu ons that show their finances with transparency and responsibly help the poor with what they truly need: a job (if they can keep one), clothes, shelter, nutri on, mental health services, warmth, love, and respect.
Homelessness can seem overwhelming, but you can make a difference for a few individuals on a given day, which might mean the world to someone! I guarantee you will never be the same; you will hold our shared humanity in your heart forever.
Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, the Warming Center has been able to serve 80 to 100 people experiencing homelessness each day throughout the month of January.
The Warming Center at St. Mary’s gave me a new opportunity. In a safe space for the unhoused individuals and me, I can look them in the eye, serve meals to them, and exchange smiles like equal human beings. Each person has a story of how they became homeless, but it’s not my business to judge. I’m there to support them in that moment, providing nourishment with love and respect. I’m not afraid of them anymore. They have become whole perfect beings to me. When you let love guide you instead of your cri cal thinking, you see the beau ful, unique beings they are. I’ve been collec ng warm clothing and shoes for them because I no ced some were ge ng wet in the rain. An intense cold was coming, and they were unprepared. We some mes have such an excess of everything in our homes, and we have no clue about the basic needs of others right in our backyard. Being originally from Peru, I never imagined that in the United States of America, the most powerful country on Earth, there was no adequate safety net for a mentally ill person, someone suffering from severe addic ons or just going through a rough patch in their life. I thought those were third-world problems. I realize that homelessness has many causes and is a complex issue, but I invite everyone to volunteer to help our fellow human beings who need our support. They won’t take more than they need because they must haul it with them. They need to travel light. Have you ever thought about that? I learned it from James, who was trying clothes on in the dona ons room. I tried convincing him to take more things, but he refused and explained. What an eye-opener that was! It’s a good spiritual prac ce to get in the shoes of an unhoused person and think in detail what a day of that person’s life is like. We can learn a lot from them by volunteering at the Warming Center. I promise they will help you keep things in perspec ve in your own life.

SCC GROUPS BEGIN THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 5TH. Lent will be upon us soon (Ash Wednesday is Feb. 14) and it’s me to think about how you might enrich your prayer life and spend extra me with God’s Word. Joining one of our Small Church Communi es can help! SCC groups will meet for seven weeks to discuss faith, God’s presence in our world, as well as the meaning of the Sunday scripture readings. We have groups to fit most schedules, as well as special interests, including a Spanish speaking group, an Ignaan Spirituality topic, or “Just Faith” social jus ce issues. Here’s what one group member had to say about the SCC experience: “The Holy Spirit was clearly present in our discussions, bringing great richness to our sharing, bringing each person’s uniqueness to our group. This brought far greater insight to the weekly Scripture passages that we reviewed, making the readings at the Sunday liturgy more powerful and meaningful.”
Igna an SCC Lent 2024: Focusing on Prayer This Lent, join a five-part series of guided discussions on prayer. The sessions will address how we can become more transparent in our conversa ons with God. In our prayer prac ce do we filter certain topics in our conversa on with God? What is it that we tell God? Igna an Spirituality is at the heart of these sessions reminding us that God’s love is uncondi onal. Each session is based on chapters from the book “Praying the Truth” by William Barry, SJ. E a MacDonagh-Dumler will lead the in-person sessions beginning on Wednesday, Feb 21 with the topics of “Prayer as Rela onship” and “Prayer and Friendship”. Addi onal topics from the book will be discussed on the following Wednesday evenings: Feb 28, March 6, March 13, and March 20, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. If you decide to register for this Lenten SCC group, you will need to purchase a copy of the book: Praying the Truth by William A. Barry.

Job’s cry of hopelessness stands in marked contrast to the hope of those who put their trust in Jesus, who “heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds”. Such are the blessings of the good news.
