STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

“HOW AM I USING MY GIFTS HERE IN GOD’S KINGDOM? “ By Julia Novotny, Faith Doing Jus ce Coordinator With Advent upon us, we find ourselves in a season of hope, prepara on for the Lord’s second coming, and an cipa on as we look forward to celebra ng the birth of our Lord. This season reminds us not only of the Lord’s promise of salva on, but also of our role to prepare the way of the Lord. Through bapsm, we are incorporated into the Body of Christ, and so become one with Christ, one with another, and share in His mission “to save and heal the world”1. As part of this, God is constantly extending an invita on to respond to this call to be co-creators with Christ and to serve as His hands and feet in the world. Through our par cipa on in God’s work, and through the gi of the Holy Spirit, we bear witness to the inbreaking of the kingdom in the here and now while sharing with others the hope and love of Christ that God desires all to know. In a world laden with violence and injus ce, we need these glimpses of the Kingdom to sustain us in our work and draw us closer to the God who saves and makes all things new.

Since beginning my role as the Faith Doing Jus ce Coordinator, it has brought me so much joy, hope, and inspira on to witness these glimpses in our own parish community. Through your incredible support of our Faith Doing Jus ce programs and the generous sharing of your me, talent, and treasure, I see regularly how our parish community is responding, in an ongoing way, to the needs of the world and Christ’s call to be the Body of Christ and con nue His mission here on Earth. Through all our opportuni es to serve, I’ve seen the genius of God’s plan to build up the Body of Christ by equipping each of its members with diverse gi s for this mission. Whether your gi s be more behind the scenes, helping to coordinate the logis cs of our programs, or you are energized by opportuni es of encounter and connec on, these individual gi s allow us to collec vely contribute to Christ’s mission. We need them all!

workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifesta on of the Spirit is given for some benefit…As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ” (NABRE, 1 Corinthians 12: 4-7;12). As we journey through Advent and undergo our prepara on for the coming of our Lord, I invite us all to reflect on the ways that we are responding to God’s call in our own lives to be the Body of Christ and con nue His mission. While Advent is an especially beau ful me to reflect on this ques on, our prepara on for the Lord is ongoing in the Chris an life, un l He comes again. 1.What gi s has the Spirit given me as a member of Christ’s body? 2.How am I using these to spread hope and love in the world and bear witness to the reali es of God’s Kingdom? 3.What opportuni es are there for me to use these gi s more fully for the building up of the Body and to grow deeper in rela onship with God this Advent season? May God bless you as you prepare for His coming. 1
