STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

"Embracing Mexico's Day of the Dead" By Constance Heskia, Communica ons/Stewarship Director I lived in Mexico for several years, and during that me, I was fortunate to experience the unique and beau ful tradi on of the Day of the Dead, or "Día de los Muertos." This tradi on never ceased to amaze me, offering a huge contrast to the way we honor our loved ones in my na ve France.

Ini ally I didn’t understand the concept of an “ofrenda” when the daycare asked us to bring one for the altar in memory of a great Mexican singer (see first picture). I remember asking some Mexican friends what I was supposed to bring and more informa on about this tradi on. While I never personally set up my own altar, as it's not a part of my cultural heritage, I always loved to see the beau ful altars and ofrendas lovingly created by others. Altars are me culously decorated with marigold flowers, candles, sugar skulls, objects that remind the deceased and photographs. During many years, I used to bring my kids to a small cemetery close to my house, it was an amazing experience: The tombs were lovingly adorned with beau ful flowers, mak‐ ing the cemeteries a truly enchan ng atmosphere (see pic‐ ture) . The cemeteries came alive with people singing, danc‐ ing, and sharing stories. Some people were even bringing food to share with their loved ones. I realized that each one told a unique and touching story. In France, our observance of All Saints' Day is far more solemn and lacks the joy of the Mexican celebra on.

In downtown Puebla too, you felt the day of dead atmosphere: the streets were adorned with marigolds, sugar skulls, and colorful papel picado banners. The air was filled with the aro‐ ma of tradi onal Mexican food, tamales, tacos and churros. We used to eat “Pan de Muertos”, a deligh ul and typical

treat of the celebra on. The vibrant, joyous atmosphere of this Mexican celebra on had not only le a las ng impression but also confirmed my place within the heart of Mexico, a place I called home for many years.

We are to love the Lord with our whole heart and our neighbor as ourselves. By thus fulfilling these two great commandments, we hope to become models of faith and imitators of the Lord who gave himself totally for our sakes.

PLEASE THANK OUR SPONSORS!

The prophet denounces those priests who in their pride have turned away from the Law, causing others to go astray. Jesus, too, is cri cal of those religious leaders who fail to prac ce what they preach. All, rather, are called to greatness through humility and service, by sharing their lives with others.

THIS BULLETIN IS FURNISHED TO THE PARISH WITHOUT CHARGE. The adver sements that appear completely defray all publishing costs with which the church would otherwise be burdened. Please patronize these sponsors as a thank you for their kind generosity.
