SERVICE IMMERSION TRIP IN GUATEMALA

During the second week of May, a group of eleven SMSP parishioners and I traveled to Guatemala City to par cipate in a week-long service immersion trip with Interna onal Samaritan. IntSam was founded by a Jesuit priest and high school students in the early 1990s and has projects in garbage dump communi es Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Ethiopia, and soon to be Kenya and Tanzania

We spent most of our me based at the Family Life Center near the city garbage dump which operates as the IntSam Guatemala office and home base for the Paso a Paso scholarship program. The holis c program supports over 120 teenagers (scholars) who a end high school and navigate the challenges of living in a community where the majority of people live below the poverty line of $2.15 per day. Throughout the week, we accompanied the scholars by listening to their struggles and perseverance. One a ernoon we visited the home of one of the scholars named Abner and his mother. They rent a small apartment with no windows and an outdoor shared space with their neighbors where they wash their clothes and cook. It is hard to imagine living in such bleak circumstances, and yet their warmth and hope were infec ous. Abner spoke of his apprecia on for Interna onal Samaritan which is helping him further his educa on in order to further support his family.

Our main project was pain ng the Family Life Center, a large warehouse building with cinder block walls. A er three days pain ng the walls and a large sec on of the floor, we concluded with a ceremony where the 100+ scholars, IntSam staff, and SMSP group painted handprints on the walls with our names. We had lots of fun pain ng alongside the IntSam staff and young scholars and were able to make the space a much warmer and welcoming place for their community. We also spent me in the Francisco Coll school, an elementary school started and supported by Interna onal Samaritan. I celebrated a mass for the students and teachers at the school on our first day there and throughout the week we had the opportunity to teach English, help the teachers, and play with the children.

On Saturday and Sunday, two groups of scholars joined us for excursion days in An gua and Guatemala City. We par cipated in a coffee tour, visited the beau ful Guatemalan markets, a ended mass at the Cathedral, and had lunch on the roo op

of a tall building in the center of Guatemala City. While riding the elevator to the roo op restaurant, one of the scholars told me “me da miedo” (it makes me scared) and said it was her first me on an elevator. Our ou ngs with the scholars were unique opportuni es for all of us to experience new customs and places in the beau ful country of Guatemala.

Although our contribu ons were likely minimal, given the great need there, what happened during our week in Guatemala was grace-filled and heart transforming. In some small way, we were able to bring new light and life into the IntSam Guatemala community as they navigate the hardships of extreme poverty and con nue to emerge from the compounding difficulty of the pandemic. I am very grateful to have spent a week with such a wonderful group from SMSP represen ng the diversity of our parish: four undergrads, four Grad/YPs, four resident parishioners (three of whom were na ve Spanish speakers). It was “one step along the way” of furthering the important work of IntSam as they seek to provide greater access to educa on, employment, and well-being in communi es that are o en forgo en, marginalized, and suffer most from the climate crisis.

I hope SMSP can con nue to partner with IntSam through ongoing educa on and dialogue, the IntSam Global 5k in the Fall, and future service immersion trips through the LEARN, SERVE, GROW Partnership Curriculum.

“LEARN, SERVE, GROW PARTNERSHIP CURRICULUM: Internaonal Samaritan wants to help cul vate a heart of service in all of our partners. That’s why, beginning in 2020, we’re asking all of our partners to join us for Learn, Serve, Grow, an approach dedicated to taking service and partnership to new heights. The program includes LEARN, a way for partners to learn in-depth about garbage dump communi es and extreme poverty – and help our scholars learn as well; SERVE, our maintained core of service both abroad and from home; and GROW, where we ask students to take all they have learned and act as advocates for communi es facing extreme poverty worldwide, helping us reach even more individuals and communi es who need aid.”
