MAY 14, 2023 MAY 21, 2023 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER STUDENT PARISH CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

ASIAN PACIFIC HERITAGE

I am grateful to have met so many of you during our Parish Meet & Greet over the weekend of April 22-23. As I prepare to take on this new role of pastor, I was greatly encouraged to witness your deep apprecia on for and wholehearted dedica on to our community.

We are so incredibly blessed to have a parish that represents in so many ways the catholicity or universality of the Church, from a wide range of backgrounds, generaons, and experiences. Soon a er my ordina on, I completed a thesis on ethnic Catholic college student communi es, which looked at the important role that ethnic culture plays for many young adult Catholics today in their understanding and prac ce of the faith.

As our na on celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I thought it would be fi ng to share some reflec ons on how my own cultural heritage has impacted my faith journey.

When I shared with my mother that I would be the new pastor at St. Mary, her first ques on was about whether the parish would welcome having an “Oriental,” as she put it, as pastor.

My mother grew up during World War II and her grandfather was incarcerated throughout the war in five different U.S. Department of Jus ce camps across the Western U.S. While I never met my great-grandfather, the stories I heard about the humilia on and embarrassment my family experienced in those dark days had a profound impact on me. Like many Japanese Americans, these challenging experiences galvanized my family to demonstrate beyond a doubt that we were just as American as anyone else. In fact, some of my earliest memories of my paternal grandmother are of her singing patrio c songs like Ba le Hymn of the Republic.

Many years later, as a Jesuit scholas c, I was assigned to Creighton University to serve as its first Coordinator of Asian/ Pacific Islander Ini a ves and spent a summer as an intern at the Japanese American Na onal Museum in Los Angeles. I was asked to accompany families who came to revisit the

painful memories of immigra on and war- me incarcera on and to help the docents, most of whom had been children in the camps, to reflect on their experiences in leading tours. Nearby was the only Japanese Catholic chapel in the U.S., where I a ended Mass in Japanese, even though I could not speak nor understand almost any of it. It was there that a Korean woman challenged me to learn Japanese, since she had been forced to do so during the Japanese occupa on of Korea.

My forma on director at the me, a Filipino American Jesuit, encouraged me to study Japanese and so I spent the next summer a ending a private language school and living with Jesuit scholas cs in Tokyo. It was there that I met a fellow Jesuit scholas c who had grown up just 15 minutes away from my family’s ancestral village in Yamaguchi. At the end of my me in Japan, I felt that God had granted me the grace to integrate the Japanese American, Catholic, and Jesuit aspects of my iden ty as a child of God. Soon a er returning to the U.S., I was asked to help with Japanese Masses in the Bay Area. I recall how at the first outdoor Mass we celebrated during the pandemic, the 90 year-old matriarch of the community shed tears as I gave her communion saying, “Kirisuto no on-karada.”

God certainly found a way to make use of my Japanese heritage as a Catholic priest.

St. Mary Student Parish is a welcoming, Inclusive, caring, and diverse Catholic community, uni ng residents and students.

We are Christ-centered with the Eucharist as the source of holiness in our vibrant liturgical life.

Inspired by Igna an spirituality, we live a faith that does jus ce, reaching out to the marginalized.

Racism and the Catholic Church: ‘The injus ce of racism is an a ack on human life.’

Think you’re pro-life? Don’t forget about the need to stand against racism.

That’s right. Racism is a life issue.

Our U.S. Catholic bishops have reminded us of this mandate to help heal the sin of racism in our world. The injus ces of racist policies dispropor onately affect people of color and other minori es who have the greatest numbers in jail, and in poverty, and with the least access to health care, healthy environments, healthy diets, quality educa on and affordable housing.

“As bishops, we unequivocally state that racism is a life issue. Accordingly, we will not cease to speak forcefully against and work toward ending racism.” (From Open Wide our Hearts, The Enduring Call to Love, A Pastoral Le er against Racism 2018, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops)

The bishops also state:

“Overcoming racism is a demand of jus ce… Racism is a moral problem that requires a moral remedy a transforma on of the human heart that impels us to act. The power of this type of transforma on will be a strong catalyst in elimina ng those injus ces that impinge on human dignity.”

Our faith calls us to stand in solidarity with our neighbors and all of crea on – to demonstrate, in the words of Pope John Paul II, “a firm and persevering determina on to commit oneself to the common good.” Pope Francis tells us that means relying on Catholic Social Teaching principles, including policies that consider how decisions impact the poor, and protect the oppressed.

Above all, Catholics believe in the Dignity of the Human Person (a key teaching of CST). It’s about the right to an abun-

dant life: the right to reach the full poten al of who and what God created each person to be and do.

As a parish group, we want to encourage our fellow Catholics to value the importance of being truly and completely “pro-life.”
