STUDENT PARISH

MARCH 26, 2023 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR, REV. JAMES GARTLAND, S.J.

March 23, 2023

Dear Parishioners of St. Mary Student Parish:

With mixed emo ons, I have some news to share with all of you. I have received a new mission from the Society of Jesus, and will become the Chief Mission and Iden ty Officer for the Cristo Rey Network. I will be leaving St. Mary Student Parish this July.

About a year ago, I began conversa ons with my Provincial regarding my future. Since I was ordained a priest 30 years ago, I have had a variety of missions where I was “in charge”. I thought it was me to have someone younger take the lead. Having a bout with prostate cancer and celebra ng my 65th birthday also gave me reason to pause and pray about the new chapter that awaits.

As you know, my first assignment as a priest was to conduct a feasibility study for the Jesuits on whether we could serve the low income immigrant community in Chicago. I wrote a report and recommended we start a new high school in Chicago, and the first Cristo Rey School came to life. Going back to work now for the na onal network that now includes almost 40 schools feels like a bookend to what began long ago. My job will be to help the schools develop and strengthen their Catholic iden ty, help schools be accountable to our mission, and help the spiritual forma on of the na onal staff. I have always been passionate about educa onal equity and the right to quality educa on for all.

Leaving St. Mary’s a er 5 years will be extremely difficult for me. I have loved you, and loved walking with you. I am deeply grateful for your love and encouragement. You have deepened my faith. It has been a privilege to come to know you. It’s also been so much fun. I will deeply miss you. Thank you for your faith, love, and kindness.

The Provincial, with Bishop Boyea’s approval, has named Fr. Kyle Shinseki, S.J. the next Pastor of St. Mary Student Parish effec ve July 1, 2023. Some of you also remember Dan Dixon, S.J. who spent some months working here several years ago. Dan will be ordained a priest in June, and his first assignment will be here beginning July 1 st . I am thrilled that Frs. Kyle, Bobby, Pat, and Dan will be serving the people of this wonderful parish. You will be in good hands.

I plan on con nuing to give St. Mary Student Parish and all of you my all for the next few months. We will con nue to walk together with Jesus deepening our companionship. Be assured of my prayers and love for all of you.

With gra tude and affec on,

My name is Ella Engquist, and I am a Junior studying sociology here at Michigan. I am conduc ng a pilot study for SOC 310 (Sociological Research Methods) that also serves as preliminary research for my senior honors thesis about the importance of Catholic confession.

As a lifelong Catholic myself, I am curious about others’ encounters with confession, and want to understand them from an embodied perspec ve. Within the next 2-3 weeks, I am hoping to speak with 8 to 10 Catholic students interested in discussing their perspec ves on and experiences with reconcilia on. These interviews last 30-45 minutes (though more extensive meframes are more than welcome!) and are semi-structured. Our conversa on will simply be a space to talk about confession freely, and explore your experiences with the sacrament in whatever way you see fit! All data will be kept anonymous and confiden al.

If you have ques ons about my research, or are interested in parcipa ng, contact: ellengq@umich.edu

Posture,PoetryandPrayer

Monday, March 27 @ 6:00-7:15pm in Donnelly Hall | Co-led by Fr. Bobby & Fr Piaras

As we approach Holy Week, this is an invita on to consider how we might best be present to God. Using some gentle yoga - in your chair if you prefer - we will take me to a end to posture, receive insight from some poetry and reflect on how we pray.

We hope that this will help us to listen and to be present to Jesus as Holy Week recalls the depth of his a en on to us and his profound sharing in our lives - even with their hesita ons, pains and ques ons.
