CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Family Faith: Building up the Body of Christ

Family Faith Forma on begins today and I'm so excited to share that we have 134 families (and 209 children) registered for the Family Faith, Hispanic/La no Sacramental Prep, and Teen Confirma on programs and we have 55 undergrad, grad, and young professionals who have answered God's call to serve as catechists this year.

As families begin their faith journeys, I'd like to introduce the theme for Family Faith this year: Building up the Body of Christ in our Homes and in the Community We will focus on equipping parents to fulfill their roles as the primary educa‐tors of their children's Catholic faith forma on. Resources will be provided to the parents to teach their children to love and know Jesus through prayer, service, and love of neighbor within the family home and in the community. Crea ng friendships and building community among parents and fam‐ilies is also an objec ve. In order to promote further family conversa on at home, a common thread will be provided between what the children are learning with their catechists in the classrooms and what the parents are learning in the parent presenta ons.

Our first session is Building up the Body of Christ through Service We will explore ways of incorpora ng service within the family unit, in our local community, as well as in far off places. We will learn about "disinterested service", which is choosing to serve for the good of another rather than for one's own self interest. This message of disinterested service was also echoed by Saint Paul in his le er to the Philippians (Phil 2:1-11) - "Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vain‐glory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but [also] everyone for those of others." As a great example of pu ng this theme into ac on, a guest panel of resident pa‐rishioners and students will reflect on their recent outreach trip to a Guatemalan garbage dump community and share ways to help those in need.

Our next session will focus on Building up the Body of Christ through Prayer Fr. Dan will convey the importance of family

prayer, give sugges ons of different types of prayer, and pro‐vide examples of various ways to pray.

Building up the Body of Christ through Celebra on will bring us into the Advent season and will provide different ways to incorporate the liturgical seasons and celebra ons into fami‐ly life.

Building up the Body of Christ with Love in the Home will teach us how to create loving and peaceful family environ‐ments at home by learning what resonates with spouses and with children.

We will be Building up the Body of Christ by Providing Love and Security with our new safe environment program called Circle of Grace. Parents will learn how to have conversa ons with their children to let them know that God's love is always with them and that each of them is unique and special and should be respected and treated as such. Children will be empowered to ac vely par cipate in a safe environment.

Building up the Body of Christ through Receiving and Living the Sacraments will round out our year. Understanding the importance of the Sacraments is key to receiving God's grace and to growing your faith and the faith of your children.

The catechists and the Faith Forma on Team look forward to growing our faith and building up the Body of Christ in your homes, in the community, and at Saint Mary Student Parish.

SAFE HAVEN SUNDAY : EQUIPPING THE FAMILY, SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN

Today is “Safe Haven Sunday.” With the Catholic Church throughout the U.S., as part of Respect Life Month, we acknowledge that families today face a challenge to protect children and young adults from explicit images and videos on the Internet that distort our understanding of human sexuality.

What follows are five sugges ons from Ryan Foley in his ar cle, “Raising Children in a Pornographic World.” You can read the whole ar cle here: t.ly/N96FG

1.Parents, teach your children the true meaning of human sexuality and educate them in chas ty.

First and foremost, parents must emphasize the beauty and sacredness of the body and sexuality, and the truth that we are made for las ng love. We are each made in God's image and therefore called to love, for "God is love" (1 Jn 4:8).

2. Be aware of the widespread availability of pornography and the fact that many children are exposed to it at young ages.

The average age of first exposure to pornography is eleven.2 Over a quarter of children see pornography before beginning puberty, a percentage that has increased over past genera ons.3 By the age of eighteen, over 90 percent of boys and 60 percent of girls will have accessed pornography online at least once.4

With each new genera on now growing up with the Internet, being exposed to pornography is no longer the excep on but the norm. Some children are exposed to pornography inadvertently when online. Others are exposed because of natural curiosi es about human sexuality. The younger children are, the more of an effect it can have on their young brains. Study a er study shows that young people who seek out and consume online pornography are more likely to have "recrea onal" a tudes about sex. 5Moreover, researchers have also found there is a significant correla on between frequent porn use and feelings of loneliness and major depression.6 Children and teens who view pornography in effect receive an educa on about sexuality from what they are viewing.

3. If you struggle with pornography use, seek your own healing to be a good example and witness of chaste love for your children.

4. Be vigilant about what technology you allow in your home, and establish clear boundaries by installing filtering so ware and educa ng your children about technology use.

5. Cul vate loving, trus ng rela onships with your children so they feel comfortable approaching you with ques ons about sexuality or sexual images they may have inadvertently seen.
