STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

I can’t believe October is already here. It feels like I just arrived in July, excited to meet you all. While I have spent almost all of my life either a ending school or teaching, how ironic that I have felt like a new student, eager to learn from you all about what it means to be a priest. And while I am not rushing to say goodbye to September, the gorgeous weather, and the excitement of new beginnings, I feel sure that October will be just as blessed, in its own ways.

Speaking of blessings, I am honored to help lead the Faith Forma on team at St. Mary. Helping all our parishioners grow in faith is a priority for us, from our programs serving families with children and young adults, led capably by Karen Foster (Family Faith Forma on), Maribel Rosas (Hispanic/La no sacramental prep), and Elisa Alvarez (Teen Confirma on). In addi on to being an Igna an Spirituality guru, Rita Zyber directs our RCIA program and provides excellent materials and support for our Small Church Communi es. Julia Novotny leads our Faith Doing Jusce efforts, where she is excited to partner with energe c student and resident parishioners who are commi ed to serving and advoca ng for the most vulnerable people among us. Julie Mussio con nues to accompany dozens of couples annually through marriage prepara on while also organizing our liturgical volunteers. Last but certainly not least, Bailey Burke is one of our two campus missionary disciples who has a heart full of zeal to help evangelize our undergraduate students through retreats and various forma on and social events, not only here at St. Mary but all throughout campus.

Though these programs may seem disparate due to their diverse popula ons we serve, we are all united in the desire to help others grow in their rela onship with God such that, as one parish community, we might do our part to accompany others as God leads us into a hope-filled future. That’s why our theme for this year is Building the Body of Christ. This image of the Church

as the mys cal Body of Christ is as old as the Church itself, dang back to the le ers of St. Paul, who reminds us that “though many by the Spirit we are all bap zed into one body” (1 Cor 12:12-13).

As Catholics we are convinced that every human life is sacred: a gi from God that is necessary for the mys cal body of Christ, the Church, to flourish. That’s why, with Catholic Churches across the United States, this October we are proud to celebrate Respect Life Month. As Laura Durocher, a senior here and president of Michigan Catholics, put it so aptly in her weekly newsle er, to respect life is “to understand that regardless of whether or not you are elderly, poor, disabled, imprisoned, homeless, a migrant, a child conceived in difficult circumstances, or someone who has experienced abor on, your life is a gi .”

Each week this month in the bulle n we will highlight a par cular group or cause that we can support with our prayers, me, and resources in our collec ve effort to respect life. This week we are highligh ng the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, called by Pope Francis on September 24th, with a one page bulle n insert. Consider taking the me to read it over and pray about how the Spirit may be calling you individually, and us as Church together, to respond.

Over the next few weeks, look also for reflec ons from our Faith Forma on team members about how they are witnessing the Holy Spirit building up the Body of Christ in St. Mary in various ways. We all believe strongly that the Spirit is present here, seeking to build us up as one community of faith, that God’s will might be done not only within the walls of 331 Thompson St. but also in all parts of our lives.

Wishing each of you and your families many blessings as we journey into October together as Church.
