With honor and delight, the Olympia Symphony Orchestra introduces its new Music Director, Alexandra Arrieche. Her world-class experiences and skills garnered her a spot amongst the top four candidates who came to Olympia for live auditions. Alex’s authentic yearnings for collaboration, blended with her zest for music in life, are irresistible and earned her the position. She will be a gem for this community. “We are proud of the search committee,” says Executive Director Jennifer Hermann. The team of 14 included four board members, six musicians elected by the orchestra, and four active community members. “We wanted a person not just for the orchestra, but for our community,”

emphasizes Fortunately,Jennifer.thefeelings are mutual. When Alex first saw a photograph of the symphony, she had the feeling everyone was friendly. “I feel in love,” she smiles. “My nature is collaboration,” reflects Alex, who mentors youth and connects with musicians in varied genres including pop. She finds ways to integrate music with food, fun, and education. “Music can change lives and should be for everybody,” says Alex. The pandemic demanded people increase their creativity and flexibility. This is truly reflected in the upcoming ’22-’23 season. For example, with the renovations of the Washington Center underway until early November, the fall concert conducted by Alex will be held at the Kenneth Minniert Center for the Arts at SPSCC on October 16. It’s a smaller venue, so selected seats will be added within the orchestra. A few lucky people will be able to purchase a seat to get a new perspective. The rest of the audience will get views from a special camera focused on Alex conducting. The orchestra will be playing excerpts from the upcoming season, and Alex will be talking with the audience and giving clues. It will be an exciting evening. The new season will feature guest artists whose music selections will be known ahead of time. However, the full program won’t be revealed until the concert begins. For sure, the season will be packed with the unexpected. It’s a new chapter and the Olympia Symphony Orchestra invites you to dream with them. Get your tickets to this invigorating season. October 16 (SPSCC), November 13, December 23, February 4 and 5, March 19, April 23, and the Season Preview May 23-24, all at the Washington Center.

Olympia’s HARLEQUIN PRODUCTIONS kicks off the fall season with a musical award winner, starting out with Fun Home which is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes. When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. TACOMA ARTS LIVE regional theater will present an evening with Lyle Lovett. Two of America’s most prolific songwriters of any generation — Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt — return to Tacoma to share their unique blend of musical artistry. Both performers deliver songs that speak to your core with lyrics filled with equal parts joy and pain.

community fall 2022 15SHOWCASE MAGAZINE We all need a bit of laughter and this fall the WASHINGTON CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS hosts ten comedians in a comedy face-off in the hugely popular Seattle International Comedy Competition. The judges decide who moves on based on the audience responses. This is an epic skirmish of punch lines and comedic timing on their mainstage and there is no telling what to expect. Finally, Tacoma’s treasure, the TACOMA LITTLE THEATER , brings us Murder on theOrientExpress. Board the exotic and mysterious Orient Express as it takes off into the opulence and grandeur of the 1930s. Join Poirot as he battles the clock to figure out “whodunit” in this sleek, stylish, and surprisingly comedic murder mystery. A new chapter in the rich history of St. Martin’s University has begun. “We move forward to remain relevant and use tradition to guide us,” says Jennifer Bonds-Raacke, PhD, who is the 11th president and first woman to serve in this position. Experiencing Catholic schooling throughout her life, Dr. Bonds-Raacke found that the charisms of the Benedictine order resonated deeply with her personal and professional values. One value is listening. Dr. Bonds-Raacke is launching a listening tour to hear from faculty, students, staff, and constituency groups. “Everyone on campus is important,” she says. Her grandfather, who played a pivotal role in her life, instilled the importance of hearing all voices. “I saw the way people respected him, and not because of his job,” she recalls. His education ended at sixth grade. He listened with heart. The Benedictine value of justice rings clearly for Dr. Bonds-Raacke who wants to ensure the 400+ people who work at the university have fair and competitive wages. She wants to see a comprehensive pay plan that benchmarks both locally and nationally. There is power in investing in people. Hospitality, also a value, is offering warmth, acceptance, and joy in welcoming others. Dr. Bonds-Raacke talks about getting to know incoming freshman with ice cream and music at her home. She will be engaging with all of her new St. Martin’s community and feels it is her extended family.

Her husband, Dr. John Raacke, has joined with her on this adventure. Together they decided to make this area their home along with their daughters, Callie, who is in college and Brooke, who will be attending Timberline High School. Doc, their chihuahua, is also part of the family. “We look forward to giving back our time and talents,” she says.

It’s a fabulous place to do holiday shopping and be totally local.

The highly curated event packs in artisan crafters, fabric innovators, guitar makers and so much more.

Fans will be thrilled to know that the All-Freaking Night Horror Fest is back this October. You’ll also be able to Deck the Malls in early December.

Treat yourself to an adventure in time and place when you visit the Olympia Capitol Theater, home of the Olympia Film Society (OFM). Admire the exterior of the building first and notice the renovations on the marquee. Look high at the stain glass windows. Then come inside where local art surrounds you. Definitely get a bag of the fresh popcorn with real butter, and then make your way to your seat for the movie, concert or other festivity. The theater has been in continuous operation since 1924. The space is for community involvement and social networking, along with amazing entertainment. “The little gem is a work horse,” says Executive Director Audrey Henley. You might think OFM has a season laid out, but it doesn’t. “We have fresh content full of movies, bands and concerts,” she says. There are first-run independent and classic films along with second-run movies. “It’s always a surprise,” adds Audrey. Many are tied with a questionand-answer session after the show, perhaps with the cinematographer or someone involved in an aspect of the OFM,movie.anon-profit organization, owns the 10,000 square-foot historic building. The cadre of volunteers is essential to its longevity and operations. Tax dollars do not support the theater; instead, revenue comes from ticket sales, grants, and donations. Volunteers learn actual skills including being trained to run the audio, managing the floor and marketing. They also get great benefits like a no-cost membership. Plus, it’s fun to meet others and get in on the action.

Opening on October 6, 2022, TheAnimationAcademy is a traveling exhibition from Stage Nine Entertainment Inc. and focuses on the unique world of animation. Display cases house iconic 3-D models, collectibles from the industry, and films that have made history. A six-foot spinning zoetrope shows such classics as TheSimpsons, Felix and Gumby. Areas of the exhibit are dedicated to the various styles of animation, from the beginnings of American classic cartoon characters to Saturday morning cartoons, prime time TV cartoons and stop-motion animation. Visitors will learn the basic theories of animation movements and study aspects of animation features and shorts, from 2-D peg board animation to 3-D stop motion, claymation, model work and computer generated imagery (CGI). Interactive stations explain the drawing, painting and layout of traditional animation, and there’s also a station for listening to sound effects in a traditional cartoon.

TheAnimationAcademy invites the public to share in the wizardry that goes into animated movies and television, from concept to launch. It’s an opportunity to help educate the next generation of animators, with unprecedented access to archival examples and information about the top animation studios. The exhibition will be at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma from October 6 through January 12, 2023. In November, the museum will also open the exhibition Fine Lines, displaying cartoons from the museum’s collection; the annual Model Train Festival opens in December. When Carrie Stalder, owner of Manic Meatballs, made the decision to open her own restaurant in early 2020, she knew it was going to be a tough go for the first few years. But who could have imagined then what the next two years would bring? Other less brave people may have thrown in the towel when pandemic issues were taking out seasoned restaurants, but not Stalder. “It was by far the hardest year of my life, but it was so worth it,” she said.

Through thoughtful and consistent implementation, Manic Meatballs has been expanding with the help of two food trucks lovingly known as Margo and Miles (as in miles to go), plus operations at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup. According to Stalder, “I really love the growth opportunities and understand if you do something well, you can keep prices low and be Staldersuccessful.”believes fun revolves around food and that shows throughout her restaurant. From framed lyrics of her favorite songs hanging on the walls, to a cute kids’ Viking-style play ship and Leah (the store’s Shield Maiden mascot), the restaurant is designed to emanate positive vibes. MORE THAN

cuisine fall 2022 26 SHOWCASE MAGAZINE Craft beers are, by their very nature, defined as beer crafted by small, independent brewers using varied brewing techniques with creativity and enthusiasm. This certainly sums up the team at Half Lion Brewing Company located in Sumner, where they brew interesting beer, hard cider and delicious aromatic Halfseltzers.Lion Brewing Company brews easy-drinking craft beer and sells it in rugged and comfortable locations from their tasting room at the brewing site and at their full bar and restaurant in Kent, which serves up crafted food to complement their craft beers. Plus, their draft and canned products are sold in a variety of retail locations including Tundra Taqueria at the SEATAC airport. The tasting room in Sumner is constructed of recycled lumber, old saw blades and shipping containers — real, hardworking materials that complement the ‘real beer’ Half Lion brews and sells. According to Brand Manager Adam Shay, “the décor plays tribute to our grandfather’s career in the lumber industry.”

With the addition of Lead Brewer Jay Delong last year, Half Lion is now brewing more styles of beer and improving on the recipes designed years earlier on the lower slopes of Crystal Mountain. It is here that the name Half Lion was derived. Teasing a gullible friend that Tonka, a wonderfully large Great Dane, was actually half-lion, the name stuck with Shay and his cousins, owners Katie and Jason Nelson, when it came time to name their new business venture. Selling hazy IPAs, blonde ales, pilsners, and a calendar of seasonal draft-only releases, the cousins again pay homage to their grandfather through their Albert’s Amber Ale. “It’s an malt-forwardeasy-drinking,amber ale — just like he loved to drink,” said Shay. “The Rugged Luxury of Real Beer” is their motto, and through attention to the brewing process, wonderful locations to enjoy their creations from and fun programs like the Half Lion Mug Club, Half Lion Brewing may soon become your favorite hangout because, at the end of the day, it’s all about community, friends, and family.

The Year of Self-Expression

With bohemian decor being more popular than ever, teak, bamboo, and unfinished wood have become staples in homes everywhere. These more natural finishes offer a tinge of warmth without being overbearing or stale. Patterned wood, either on floors or doors, is another great option to achieve an inviting feel.

This fall, designers are chomping at the bit to incorporate an influx of new ideas in the home—whether that is an eye-catching bathtub with a mid-century silhouette or a bold and brooding accent wall with brushed gold hardware. This year it’s all about taking comfortable risks and shifting from a “designed to sell” mindset to one that is more “designed to love.” Here are five home decor trends to embrace this fall.

Additionally, honey-toned furniture and lighting fixtures add a hint of mid-century modern appeal.

UsingTEXTUREmultiple textures at once is another easy trend to incorporate into your home. Think rattan, fluted detailing, zellige tile, intricate fabrics, and baskets. All of these design choices add eye-catching intrigue while emphasizing a sense of variation, depth, and character.

CURVED SILHOUETTES

Curved silhouettes encourage touch and direct visual flow in the home. Try to incorporate gentle, sloping shapes with sleek furniture or fixtures. Play with curved silhouettes in arches within doorways and accent walls, along with mirrors, lighting, and other decor pieces.AN

Creating a space that is entirely your own is one of the biggest trends of 2022. Instead of reaching for bland, themed novelties, try incorporating various vintage trinkets, art, and wall hangings that are bound together by era, color, or shape. This ensures a carefully curated space that teeters on maximalism without forgoing order.

According to Ryan Betz, OlyFed VP of Marketing and PR, “We recently made the decision to lower interest rates for our First-Time Homebuyer Program. In fact, the interest rates for our First-Time Buyer program are a full point below our conventional mortgage rates to help more people qualify for a home purchase.”

33SHOWCASE MAGAZINE home & garden fall 2022 In recent months, interest rates have been raised by the Federal Reserve to tame inflation by cooling down spending. Couple these higher interest rates with rising home prices and lower inventory overall and the stage is set for a difficult home-buying experience for anyone. But this difficulty will be especially tough for first-time homebuyers or low-income homebuyers. OlyFed wants to help. With a mutual bank structure, it uses its growth and profits to better their surrounding community. One of their biggest priorities is helping local people become homeowners. Through two new programs, OlyFed is helping local people overcome the challenges of a difficult buying market.

In addition, OlyFed provides an Affordable Home Loan Program for households earning 80% or less of median income in Thurston ($72,160) and Mason County ($53,840). This program currently offers an interest rate well below 3%, reduced PMI premiums, and a small down payment with all but $1000 allowed to come from assistance programs. At OlyFed, you’re more than the balance of your bank account. By mixing amazing customer service, trusted lending solutions and competitive savings rates with 21st century digital and mobile banking technology, OlyFed serves up a one-of-a-kind, values-driven approach to local banking. Buying and selling homes can be stressful at any point in your life. But as a senior wanting to transition into a more user-friendly environment, the task can seem insurmountable. According to Jim Kenoyer, a recent client of Team RED leader Kathryn Kleber, “We had lived in our multi-level home with a steep driveway and lots of stairs for over 27 years and we knew we needed to make a change. The thought of dealing with the accumulation of things from that many years was intimidating.”

Having met Kathryn through a networking opportunity, Candy Kenoyer knew that Team RED Realtors©, an acronym for Resourceful, Experienced & Dedicated, approached the real estate process differently. “We were attracted to how much she helps,” said Candy. Candy has spent the last 22 years running her own embroidery business. Their new home needed to be one level and have a sewing room for Candy to practice her craft. Jim, who also still works as a driving instructor following a career in law enforcement, needed to have his own office as well. Team RED used their full-service concierge experience to help the Kenoyers find their new home in the Oakbrook area of Lakewood and negotiate the necessary updates and repairs. Then the team stepped in and helped prepare their home in University Place for sale. “We project-managed their packing, move, and disposal of unwanted items. When we had the UP house empty, we did the most cost-effective improvements to get them a fast and successful sale,” Kathryn said recently. “We were amazed at her connections and contacts. The contractors Kathryn works with were absolutely fantastic,” said Jim. “Always responsive and right there whenever we had questions or wanted to make a further change.”

The Kenoyers now enjoy time sipping coffee and taking in the view from their beautiful new deck with their miniature poodle, Tinkerbell, on their Kathrynlap.and her team offer a complimentary consultation to help clients create a plan based on their full-service project management real estate approach. PNW Shop Celebrates Grand Reopening

Following a short three-month closure for renovations, the Pacific Northwest Shop on Proctor in North Tacoma held its re-opening event on Saturday, May 21. Originally created in 1978 by Ann and Bill Evans, the shop is now owned and operated by their son Matt Evans and Cédric Poisson. With the help of Matt’s younger brother, Paul Evans, owner of Proctor Handyman and Home Renovations, the goal was to lighten and expand the space. Some of the changes included the installment of new luxury vinyl wood flooring that replaced the tile and carpet. Several sectional walls were removed to create a more open space. A window and door that had been sealed over have now been reopened and resurfaced to let light in. Neon lighting was removed, the space was painted throughout, and the lighting was redesigned. “People love it … so many visitors have asked about the color of blue we used. Someone wanted to know what the flooring was,” said Matt. “Bringing the light into the space really worked well because the most popular word used to describe the new store is ‘Airy’.”

From local wines to fun Big Foot t-shirts, and locally made pottery to volcanic ash glasswork, Pacific Northwest Shop hosts a large collection of specialty foods, decorative items, jewelry, books, bath and body products and North Coast Indian designs.

When you visit the new store, you will find many of the same brands and products carried by the store for years like Huckleberry jams and syrups, or candies from Chuker Cherries, Almond Roca, or Seattle Chocolate. But you will also find their latest discoveries from local artists and vendors. According to Matt, “We are always, always looking for new products.” Whether the owners are visiting local street fairs or meeting people that come into the store, new vendors and artists are a priority for the business.

Tapping into her newly-learned finish work skills, Wojnar decorated the space herself. “I wanted the shop to have a woodsy feel to reflect the charm of Packwood and the original Packwood Mercantile that burned down many, many years ago, so I painted the shop dark green and used schoolhouse lighting,” said Wojnar. She used old photo prints of Packwood to cover the walls in the shop’s bathroom and incorporated vintage items, each with their own story as display pieces.

Once the renovation of the parsonage was completed in November 2021, Wojnar knew she needed to make some choices. “I wanted something to do by myself. At the time I felt lost, but I knew I wanted to use my degree.”

Sometimes, life has a way of altering our plans and putting us on a new path. For Gemma Wojnar, owner of the new Packwood Mercantile, two seemingly bleak events opened the door for her new venture. First, Wojnar was finishing college in spring 2020 and working in the bar industry. We all know how that went; she was soon out of work, along with much of the workforce who made up the retail industry. But that unemployment was a blessing, because it was always her goal to branch out of the beverage industry and use her degree from Oregon State University in business and marketing in a way that was meaningful to her. The change in employment sent her to Packwood, Washington, where she worked with her romantic partner Jake Howard to renovate a church property he had recently purchased. “I learned a lot, especially about small finish work,” said Wojnar. Then, catalyst number two occurred. The cabin that Howard and their dog, Deacon, were living in had a

Wojnar felt she couldn’t survive just on vintage, so she created a hybrid store selling high-end gifts with a Pacific Northwest style.
