find film, music and art at the olympia film society

Treat yourself to an adventure in time and place when you visit the Olympia Capitol Theater, home of the Olympia Film Society (OFM). Admire the exterior of the building first and notice the renovations on the marquee. Look high at the stain glass windows. Then come inside where local art surrounds you. Definitely get a bag of the fresh popcorn with real butter, and then make your way to your seat for the movie, concert or other festivity.

The theater has been in continuous operation since 1924. The space is for community involvement and social networking, along with amazing entertainment. “The little gem is a work horse,” says Executive Director Audrey Henley. You might think OFM has a season laid out, but it doesn’t. “We have fresh content full of movies, bands and concerts,” she says. There are first-run independent and classic films along with second-run movies. “It’s always a surprise,” adds Audrey. Many are tied with a questionand-answer session after the show, perhaps with the cinematographer or someone involved in an aspect of the movie.

OFM, a non-profit organization, owns the 10,000 square-foot historic building. The cadre of volunteers is essential to its longevity and operations. Tax dollars do not support the theater; instead, revenue comes from ticket sales, grants, and donations. Volunteers learn actual skills including being trained to run the audio, managing the floor and marketing. They also get great benefits like a no-cost membership. Plus, it’s fun to meet others and get in on the action. Fans will be thrilled to know that the All-Freaking Night Horror Fest is back this October. You’ll also be able to Deck the Malls in early December. “I treasure this event,” says Audrey. The highly curated event packs in artisan crafters, fabric innovators, guitar makers and so much more. It’s a fabulous place to do holiday shopping and be totally local.

The OFM absolutely believes in the importance of art for everyone. It’s part of the richness of Olympia. Check the website for upcoming events. Please come downtown, enjoy a show, and see what you love and perhaps have been missing.
