PUBLISHED WORKS | April Tetraktys Paulo Bastos The tetraktys (from the ancient greek τετρακτύς) is a Pythagorean representation of the triangular figure, called "equilateral triangle". For Pythagoreans, the numbers maintained a direct link with Matter, considering, for example, the number "one" as a point, "two" as a

line, "three" a surface and "four" a solid. Assuming that 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10, the number "ten" was seen as a kind of set of four elements, the "foundation" of things in the world. The number "ten", according to the Pythagoreans, would correspond to a tetraktys.

sou já do que fui Paulo Bastos This piece is based on the unifying theme of identity from an individual perspective, the self-identity. sou já do que fui is an autobiographical work since it consciously brings up the sounds and main traits of my music over the past few years.

Fire Marcus Tristan Fire was commissioned by Greenpeace for a promotional concert to be performed by Ron Spigelman and the London Parechi Players in April 1991. It was commissioned alongside three other pieces based on the elements by three other composers and performed continuously like a suite. This piece was later arranged for a fuller orchestra and performed by the St. Petersburg State Symphont Orchestra Klassika in February 2003 under the baton of their Chief Guest Conductor Roman Leontiev. The music is almost unrelentingly fierce and literally "burns the ears" to quote one of the original reviews. There is a gentler episode to evoke the calm after the fire has swept through the landscape, but the fire is set to return...
