organised post-graduate research, but valuable work concerning Pacific history has been done by individual scholars especially for the history of the Maoris. The best library in the Dominion is the Parliamentary Library in Wellington and the Hocken Collection concerning New Zealand history is very valuable. There are no special means for the publication of the results of research. Research scholarships are awarded both in Australia and New Zealand and students of colonial history are often successful in obtaining them. They proceed as a rule to continue their studies in London, Oxford or Cambridge. The study of history in SOUTH AFRICA is more closely specialised than in the other dominions. In the Afrikaansspeaking University of Stellenbosch attention is largely concentr창t ed on South African history and the history of Holland and Western Europe. Students who undertake research mostly proceed to continue their work at Amsterdam, Leyden, Berlin or Ghent and their monographs are usually written in Dutch. Some valuable work has been done concerning the history of South African tribes and their contact with Europeans. In the other South African universities (Cape Town, Witwatersrand and the federal University of South Africa) English history, European history and South African history fill about equal parts in the curricula. There is naturally less study of colonial history in general than of that of South Africa. There is little specially organised training, in research in the subject, but students of promise after some preliminary work usually proceed with research scholarships to continue their historical training in Oxford, London or Cambridge. In some cases students have gone to the universities of the United States of America. The best library of the Union is the Public Library at Cape Town, which contains valuable collections relating to the history of the Sub-continent. The Public Archives are well organised both at Cape Town and in Pretoria and afford ample materials for study especially in relation to dealings with native races. There are certain publications both in English
