in London are mainly carried on in the unpublished archives in the Public Record Office which are described elsewhere, but they also work in the MSS. collections of the British Museum which include extremely important materials for the study. Besides the great collection of printed books in the Brisith Museum, the students make much use of the specialised Library of the Royal Empire Society (formerly known as the Royal Colonial Institute). This is very comprehensive and includes the series of official papers, legislative proceedings, law reports, etc., of the colonies and Dominions that are sometimes not to be found in the Library of the British Museum. There is an unique collection of newspapers from all over the Empire that is carefully kept up to date, and after a period of six months is handed over to the British Museum for preservation. The Library of the Royal Empire Society is exhaustively catalogued in published volumes, and this affords an indispensable conspectus of modern works on colonial subjects The Library of the Colonial Office also contains a large specialist collection with certain unique items, but is it not open to the public. Students can, however, obtain permission to consult books in the library for the purpose of their researches for good cause shewn. There is comparatively little research in Colonial history in the newer English universities, but MANCHESTER has in the past made some valuable contributions, and BRISTOL, which posses important collections for the history of the Empire in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, has usually a few students engaged in research among them. English scholars interested in Colonial history suffer from a great disability in that they have no co-ordinated means for the publication of the results of their researches. There is no learned periodical in Great Britain specially devoted to the subject and corresponding to the Revue d'Histoire Coloniale in France. Articles and documents are occasionally published in the English Historical Review, the Transactions of the Royal Historical Society and the Geographical Journal, but they have to contend for space with contributions from
