a direct influence upon political events in the United Kingdom. Candidates for Honours in History, who are able to confine their studies solely to historical subjectes, are in certain universities, however, able to devote more specialised attention to Colonial and Indian history, and this is notably the case in the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge and London. In the Honour School of Modern History at OXFORD the history of England which is taken by all candidates, includes the " History of British India and of British Colonies and Dependencies ". The " History of English Colonies and Dependencies " is in addition chosen by some candidates for special study, and those, who aim at obtaining First or Second Class Honours, must also take one from a list of " Special Subjects ", which have to be intensively studied in collections of original authorities. The list includes at present the following subjects among several others that have no colonial bearing : " British India, 1773-1805 ", " The American Revolution and the Formation of the Federal Constitution, 17601788 ", and " British Colonial Policy, 1830-1860 ". In the Honour School of Philosophy, Politics and Economics all candidates are required to take " British Political and Constitutional History " which is interpreted as meaning the history of the British Empire as a whole. Among the " Further Subjects ", from which every candidate must take one, is included " The Political Structure of the British Empire " which comprises the constitutional and juridical status as parts of the British Empire of the Dominions and India, and requires a knowledge of the development since 1887 of the constitutional relations between Great Britain, the selfgoverning Dominions and India. In CAMBRIDGE Colonial History enters into the course of study of undergraduates reading for the Triposes in History and in Economics and Politics. In Part I of the Historical Tripos it is studied in connection with thĂŠ papers in the Modern Constitutional History of England and the Economic History of England, both of which papers are compulsory for all candidates.
