It has been said about those who have served our country, “We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.” We do know the veterans shown below as they are employed by our city and continue to serve you every day as they keep North Ogden a great place to live. Officer Mata enlisted in the military in June 2015 and proudly served through June 2020. Enlisting in the Marines, known for their rigorous training and demanding service, speaks to his desire to face challenges headon. His most notable memory was training alongside the Filipino Marines. The harsh weather conditions and physically demanding tasks tested his endurance and resilience and made him appreciate the simple comforts of home even more. His time, training, and experience as a Marine disciplined and humbled him in ways he could never have imagined. Carrying heavy packs, weapons, and survival gear during grueling hikes through deserts, mountains, and jungles gave him a deep sense of gratitude for safety and security, which is often taken for granted. Transitioning into a career as a North Ogden City police officer is commendable, and his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents is deeply appreciated.
From a very young age, Lieutenant Hindes knew that he wanted to enlist and serve in the Air Force due to his family’s strong military background. His father, his three brothers, and his daughter have served our country. He enlisted in 1992 and proudly served until 1996, during the period following Desert Storm and before the War in Afghanistan. While his orders for deployment to Saudi Arabia were canceled, his willingness to serve during a time of uncertainty speaks to his character. Lieutenant Hindes was a military police officer and transitioned to a civilian officer, serving a total of 31 years as of today. His military background paved a strong foundation for his career as a public servant, where his exceptional compassion and dedication to helping those who have been victimized continually shines through. His efforts to ensure the safety of our residents have played a significant role in making North Ogden a great place to live. Employee Military Spotlights continued on pg. 10

Reaffirming Family Values and Expectations Start by reiterating your family's core values and expectations. Emphasize the importance of making wise choices that align with these values. Encourage them to have a plan for difficult situations and assure them that it is acceptable to say "no" to peer pressures.
Reconnecting with Each Child Individually The holiday season is an ideal time to reconnect with each child individually. Set aside dedicated time for heart-to-heart conversations. Create a safe, judgment-free space for them to express their thoughts, concerns, and experiences. EMPLOYEE MILITARY SPOTLIGHTS BY KATIE GERARD
Officer Bergstrom enlisted in the military at the age of 17, instilling in him values like discipline, respect, and a deep love for his country. His decision to join the military was influenced by his family’s legacy and President John F. Kennedy’s famous quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” His dedication to our country’s values and desire to serve are commendable. One of the most significant aspects of his military service is the strong bonds and friendships he’s formed and kept with people from diverse backgrounds. His admiration for the officers from the NYPD and Port Authority Police who responded heroically during the 9/11 attacks inspired him to continue to serve in his role as a North Ogden City police officer. He has found similarities between his military service and his current role; both careers have high standards and professionalism for the people he serves. We admire you, Officer Bergstrom, and thank you for your continued service to our country and our community.

Officer Averett fulfilled his childhood dream of serving his country when he enlisted in the Marines in 2006, right out of high school. With their reputation of being the hardest, he wanted to prove to himself that he could accomplish anything he set his mind to. His ability to challenge and push himself is a testament to his determination and dedication not only in his military career, but daily as he serves our community. His memory of training with Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and his UFC crew on the beach in San Diego was a once-in-alifetime opportunity and a moment that he’ll never forget. Officer Averett not only provides a sense of security to our community but is an indispensable leader in a variety of situations and makes a significant impact on those around him.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, Detective Ungard enlisted in the military and served a full career before retiring in 2014. During his military career, he held a vital role as an F-16 Crew Chief and later as the Lead Crew Chief on the Air Combat Command Single Ship F-16 Demonstration Team. His deployments to the Middle East and South Korea proved his dedication to his country and the sacrifices he was willing to make. The camaraderie he developed with his crew will never be matched again and is something he misses to this day. Prior to retirement, he attended the WSU Police Academy and served as a parttime officer during the last two years of his Air Force Career. Since 2021, Detective Ungard has been a valuable member of our community, and his experience gained during his military service has undoubtedly made him an asset to our city.

She is on the Yearbook staff and also serves on our HOPE Squad. Lucy enjoys playing tennis, basketball, and the piano. She has dreams of attending BYU and possibly going into social work or teaching. Most importantly, Lucy is kind, caring, helpful, always smiling, and very friendly. She has a positive attitude and shares that with others around her. efore the pioneers settled into the area that is Weber County, this land belonged to the Shoshone. The Northwestern Band of Shoshone, mistakenly called the Weber Ute, were nomadic peoples that followed their food source. They camped near water sources, foraged, and followed the herds to hunt. When the pioneers entered the area there were both peaceful and violent interactions. We know of these interactions mostly through the perspective of the pioneers. Shoshone history is oral. Passed down through repetitive story telling from the elder members of the tribe to the younger members of the tribe. Chief Little Soldier led a small band, roughly 400 people at its height, of Shoshone throughout Weber County. His band camped within the walls of Bingham’s Fort during the harsh winter of 1854-1855. Their destitute state was due to the landscape change caused by settlers. The plants, grasses, and animals they could freely forage, and hunt had become scarce or disappeared. Relations between the Shoshone and the Bingham Fort settlers were peaceful, which was unusual since most of 1853 had been spent building forts on the order of Brigham Young due to Indian and settler fighting in the central part of the Utah Territory.

Little Soldier was known to enter pioneer homes and sit himself down for dinner. He knew he was always welcome and would not begin eating until he could give the blessing. He was baptized into the Mormon faith by George Washington Hill, whom he considered a dear friend. On one such visit to George Washington Hill’s home, he found his daughter and grandson ill with a whooping cough. He gathered his oil and laid hands on the child. The baby’s color returned to his, he began breathing at a normal rate and his cough subsided. Little Soldier left the home to seek out George in Salt Lake City. They returned to the home together to find the child peacefully sleeping and learned that he had not coughed and slept through the night. The child was Louis Moench, future president of Weber Academy. One encounter with Little Soldier was between Ellen Moore Wilson, daughter of early settler David Moore. Ellen and her infant son were sick. Chief Little Soldier often came to visit, and upon walking into the home, he could tell they were afflicted with measles from the odor. Chief Little Soldier quickly left to forage herbs. On his return he steeped them into a tea and gave it

to Ellen to drink. The next morning Ellen and her son were covered in measles. His remedy quickly spread to the other settlers. He freely shared his knowledge of herbal remedies and medicines with the settlers. Chief Little Soldier served his people for 44 years. He is buried in an unknown location in the Ogden City Cemetery. Upon his death, his family and surviving wife scattered across Utah and up to Idaho. A branch of his family settled in the Layton area, and others can be found living with the Goshute Tribe. His wife, after his death, is found on the Shoshone-Bannock Indian Census roll living in on the Idaho reservation.

Saluting Our Service Members: Military Spotlight An Ardent Patriot By Cindy Jones
Monte Palmer was raised in an ardently patriotic family. His dad, who passed away when Monte was six years old, served in the Arizona National Guard from the late 1920’s until after WWII. Two of Monte’s brothers, who acted as his mentors and guardians throughout his youth, served during the Vietnam War, with one brother deploying to Vietnam. “We were raised with great patriotism, and the stories that were told around the table made me feel responsible and proud to serve my country.” Several years after serving an LDS mission in the Philippines, Monte joined the Utah National Guard in 1979. After completing basic training in Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Monte served in the Utah National Guard (UTNG) as an Enlisted Medic and advanced to the rank of Staff Sergeant, or E6.

From there, Monte attended Officer Candidate School at Camp Williams. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1983 in the US Army Corps of Engineers and served in the UTNG, building roads, airstrips, and buildings around Camp Williams and other state building sites. He
moved up the ranks to First Lieutenant and eventually to Colonel, commanding several units in the UTNG 1457th Engineering Battalion. Monte has served on nine active-duty deployments starting in 1990. During one of his deployments to Iraq, Monte’s convoy came under attack. His vehicle was hit by a rocket propelled grenade (RPG). Two of his comrades were killed, and Monte still carries pieces of metal in his back to this day from a suicide bomber attack. Years later Monte incurred another severe injury on a subsequent deployment in Afghanistan, when a helicopter he was riding in was hit by another RPG. The hard landing gave him a traumatic brain injury and moved some of the existing shrapnel nearer to his spine. Monte was awarded two purple hearts for his injuries and says he is humbled every day by the men who have lost so much more during their lives in service. Shortly after the first Gulf War, Monte transferred from the Army Corps of Engineers to the Military Intelligence Branch and served in the UTNG 300th Military Intelligence Brigade. He commanded several units during his time in this role.

After 9/11, Monte was mobilized to the Pentagon as a Military Intelligence Officer and assigned to the US Army Crisis Action Team, or CAT. Much of Monte’s service in this role is classified, but in general the CAT’s focus was problem-solving for urgent issues around the world—from military needs to natural disasters. After working with the CAT for several years, Monte was asked to assume the role of Assistant Director of the Foreign Intelligence Watch, or FIW, made up of members from each military branch as well as CIA, FBI, and Interpol. The FIW used resources at hand to locate terrorists around the world and eliminate potential threats globally. Like many veterans, Monte suffers from both physical injuries as well as PTSD from events that happened during his 34 years of service. He believes in the importance of speaking about those struggles and encourages fellow veterans to “know when it’s time to ask for help.” Monte retired in 2013 but is still strong in his convictions to his country and is humbled and honored to have worked with the professionals he served over his career.

Make sure someone stays in the kitchen when you are cooking so you can keep an eye on the food, keep an eye on lit candles, and keep children at least three feet away from the hot stove.
4. Avoid Posting your Travel Plans to Social Media
Try to keep your travel plans off of social media. Some criminals look on social websites to see when people are going to be gone for long periods of time and use that information to plan a break-in to your home.

Instead of the usual assortment of pies, this November we’re sharing two non-traditional Thanksgiving desserts that have brought joy and lasting memories to the Spelts family.
Caramel Apples by Melissa Spelts
I have fond memories of Thanksgivings with the Spelts side of the family and the smell of yummy food coming from the kitchen. We are very blessed with good cooks in our family. Our cute niece had the brilliant idea to make caramel apples and sell them. Seriously, such a smart idea. First of all, who can resist that cute face? Second of all, the cousin “peer pressure” is real. If one person buys one, everyone else will want one! They turned out great! This recipe is simple and super fun for the whole family to make. 10 Granny Smith Apples (the green ones) 3 Werther’s Original Soft Caramels (10.8 oz bags) 6 Tbsp. heavy whipping cream Sticks (wooden ones are best) Step 1: Wash apples really well, making sure the wax is off the apples. Dry well, remove the stems and add the sticks. Place them on parchment paper ready for the caramel. Step 2: In separate bowls or paper plates put your smashed Oreo cookies, Heath bars, mini M&Ms, Reese’s pieces, melted chocolate and white chocolate, etc. Step 3: In a microwave safe bowl, place your unwrapped caramels and heavy whipping cream. Microwave for 30 second intervals stirring in between. Step 4: Once caramel is ready, dip apples in and spoon caramel all over the apple until it is evenly covered. Hold it over your bowl of caramel until excess caramel comes off. Then roll in your candy bar bits, crushed Oreo, and/or M&M’s. Drizzle chocolate all over the apple. Step 5: Place in fridge and let caramel cool. Step 6: EAT! Yum!

Molasses Sugar Cookies by Chelsea Schulze
1 ½ cups shortening 2 eggs 2 cups sugar ½ cup molasses 4 tsp. soda 4 cup flour 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. ginger 2 tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. salt Melt shortening over low heat. Let cool. Add sugar, molasses, and egg. Beat well. Sift dry ingredients together. Add to 1st mixture. Mix well. Chill. Form into 1-inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool and enjoy!
