Mayor's Message AMERICA: A NATION THAT OVERCOMES “We didn’t crumble after 9/11. We didn’t falter after the Boston Marathon. But we’re America. Americans will never, ever stand down. We endure. We overcome. We own the finish line.” —Vice President Joe Biden

R

ecently I visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York. It was a deeply emotional experience as I remembered all the feelings of that day-a day that none of us will ever forget. Above all, my visit made me proud to be an American: proud of the selfless rescue workers who died after running into the burning buildings while others rushed out, proud that we even built the Twin Towers to begin with (they were absolute architectural and engineering marvels), and proud that we have now rebuilt an even taller “World Trade Center One,” to show without question that, as Vice President Biden said above, “We endure. We overcome. We own the finish line.” Indeed, we do. Through challenging chapters in our nation’s history we have not only survived—but thrived. And we will continue to do so, despite today’s partisan political turmoil and difficult challenges in our future. Consider: with only 4% of the world’s population, we have created the world’s greatest economy generating 22% of the world’s GDP, earned more Nobel prizes than the next five highest countries combined, and won three times as many Olympic medals as any other single country. America created the first modern representative democracy whose principles have spread around the world and improved the lives and liberty of billions. America created a capitalistic and innovative society that spawned so many of the inventions that enrich our lives today, including: the automobile, the plane, the transistor, rocketry/space travel, the personal computer, the video, the telegraph, the telephone, radio,

the Tesla induction motor, the internet hardware, the television, the washing machine, the refrigerator, the microwave, air conditioning, the calculator, the USB, the supercomputer, the microprocessor, and literally thousands more. Our scientists created mass production and the assembly line, discovered and harnessed electricity, and invented the oil well and played key roles in unlocking the power of oil to move humanity. We consistently lead the world in charitable giving, international aid, and the number of missionaries, doctors, and humanitarian workers we send around the world.

World Bank, and International Monetary Fund—creating the conditions in which international trade and cooperation have flourished, while no further world wars have been fought. I could go on, but suffice it to say, that despite our national faults and sins, there is no nation that has done more to improve the human condition than the United States of America. I am proud to be an American, and wish everyone in North Ogden a wonderful Independence Day! May God Bless the USA!

Grand Marshal of the Cherry Days Parade About Wayne Elwell

Wayne was born in Ogden, Utah on July 2, 1941 to Don and Bobie Elwell. He is the second of four children and was raised in Preston, Idaho where he learned from his father the importance of community service. Don and Wayne both served on their respective city councils at the same time for a number of years. Wayne served a Mission in Chile for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Wayne married Lois McAfee in 1982 and moved from Arizona to raise their family in North Ogden. They have lived in North Ogden for 34 years. Together they have 5 children, 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way.

civic minded citizens who gave of their time and talent to serve their city as well. Far too many people to mention, each of them leaving a lasting friendship and memory for Wayne. It was tradition to see him running around on the 4th with his “Wayne’s World” hat on so people knew who he was. Wayne was truly in his element when he was serving the citizens of North Ogden and the community that he loves so much. Wayne was one of the longest serving City Councilmembers in North Ogden history. He was instrumental in expanding and improving Cherry Days and in making that celebration what it is today. And he has left a lasting mark on North Ogden City from his many years of community service and involvement. We salute Wayne Elwell and his wonderful wife Lois this Cherry Days and thank them for all they have done for North Ogden City. A BIG THANK YOU to Shane & Jenn West, Team DevilDog Realty who are the sponsor for the Grand Marshal Dinner.

Wayne graduated from the University Of Utah with a BS in Pharmacy. Locally he has worked as a pharmacist at Washburn Pharmacy, Harmons Pharmacy, Wangsgard’s Pharmacy, and Stop N’ Shop Pharmacy; Wayne retired in the fall of 2013 after a long and productive career. In 1986 Wayne was asked to be the Cherry Days Chairman which was the beginning to his community service in North Ogden. He did a phenomenal job and played a big role in helping re-invigorate and improve the Cherry Days celebration. He introduced the concept of a Cherry Days booklet for all homes in the city, and helped publish this booklet for many years. He was given the opportunity of working with many of the citizens, and because of this great experience he chose to run for City Council. Wayne served four consecutive terms on the North Ogden City Council resulting in sixteen years of service from 1987 to 2003. He served under Mayor’s Dursteller, Warnick, and Harrop. During his time on the Council Wayne served on many committees and boards. Some of his favorite experiences were planning and developing the Bicentennial Park and Lee’s Market area, the Barker subdivision and park, and the original North View Senior Center (now the North Ogden City Offices). After working at his own job, Wayne would often stop by the construction site in the evenings and on days off to volunteer his own time to help clean up and work on the project. Wayne’s fondest memories of the city have to be of Cherry Days. He was great at utilizing people and businesses from North Ogden and getting local donations to keep this celebration going. He had the opportunity of working with many dedicated,

Thank you Wayne for 31 years of community service with our city and the Cherry Days festival. You have left a lasting mark on North Ogden City! North Ogden Cherry Days | 2017 |

2016 Miss North Ogden Winners Navy Humphreys

I could not be more grateful for the year I have had to serve as Miss North Ogden. One of the best decisions I have ever made was to participate in the Miss America Organization through the Miss North Ogden Scholarship Program, which represents everything I aspire to be. I have loved serving our city and working alongside our great Mayor, Brent Taylor. some of my favorite memories were turning on the Christmas Lights with Santa Claus, the summer parades, and our awesome Comcast Cares Day of Service where we were able to come together and work on our community as a whole. This year I was able to work on my platform "Stem from your Comfort Zone, which focuses on empowering women in STEM related careers. STEM stands for Science Technology, Engineering, and Math. As a woman pursuing an engineering degree, I am very passionate about this cause. I have had the opportunity to be a STEM Fair judge, a PAL camp mathematics teacher, a host for family math night , and a SheTech mentor. My goal has been to invite our younger generation, and future STEM professionals, to get excited about these subjects. I hope that I have inspired them to find their passion and integrate it with their dream career. I have loved every second of the hours I spent working with young women and children of all ages. I am so thankful for my year as Miss North Ogden and all the opportunities it has presented Miss North Ogden 2106 me to achieve in my dreams and be successful in the future. I could not have done it with without the incredible support of my family or my brilliant director, Hannah Goodrich. I will never forget my experiences ad will carry on to serve the community and platform that I love, far beyond the crown. I am humbled by the support and blessings I have received and the Miss North Ogden Scholarship Program will forever be a part of my life!

Samantha Gambles My year as Miss North Ogden's Outstanding Teen has been such a memorable experience. I have learned to be a leader and a strong, confident young woman. I have loved sharing my platform "Heads Up! Helmet Safety Awareness" with many schools and throughout the community. I believe that my platform has changed many lives for the better and I have learned so much from it. I'm very grateful for everyone that supported me through this life changing experience. I'm especially grateful for my director, Hannah Goodrich. She has encouraged me to be my best self and has taugth me that with confidence I can achieve anything. I'm also so very grateful for my mom. She has been with me through all the tears, laughs and dress shopping. I'm so thankful for all the love and support from our community. I've loved having the opportunity to represent North Ogden city as the first Miss North Ogden's Outstanding Teen!

Children's Safety Keeping Children Safe During Cherry Days Once again, North Ogden residents and businesses are getting ready for Utah’s GREATEST Fourth of July celebration known as Cherry Days! During this exciting time, fun-filled activities will be available from sunrise to sundown for all to enjoy. From a 5K Fun Run/Walk and Kiwanis Breakfast to parades, festivals in the park, shows, and a grand finale with concert and fireworks, there is sure to be enough fun for everyone. Each year, however, safety concerns regarding children continue to arise. According to the North Ogden Police Department, the two greatest safety concerns they encounter are: 1) Lost children, and 2) Children running into the road. Parents and guardians can play a vital role in keeping their children safe by following these simple steps:

 LOST CHILDREN: a. Have children wear a name tag with a contact’s cell phone number. b. Make sure that children know their parents’ names, phone number, and home address. c. Take a picture of your child before the parade begins, showing their clothes or costume. d. Choose a designated meeting spot, in case of separation during an emergency.

 CHILDREN RUNNING INTO THE ROAD: a. Instruct children to stay off the road during the parade. Candy and other treats will be handed out by walkers along the parade route, instead of thrown from floats.
