Welcome

It is always such a treat to reflect on a school year in its entirety, and I thank the school community for such a wonderful and positive year at Repton Prep.

It has been a pleasure to get to know everyone and I am already looking forward to all that the future holds. The pupils continue to inspire with their boundless energy, never-ending enthusiasm, and their commitment to such a wide range of lessons, activities and trips; they relish the breadth of the programme at Repton Prep and thrive on the variety available to them.

Every term, we celebrate the rich tapestry of events in the curriculum and beyond, which are evidenced in the forthcoming pages, highlighting the array of opportunities across school life. The pupils enjoy working together, having fun and sharing their experiences; I thank them for making Repton Prep the exciting and vibrant place that it is.

We wish our leavers the very best of luck for the future and it has been such a privilege to get to know them during their time with us at the Prep. As I mentioned on Speech Day, they are honest, open, communicative, engaged and engaging; willing to discuss issues, raise problems, have fun, and interact in a mature fashion. They also care hugely about the world and are willing to stand up for what they believe; what an inspiration!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this edition of the Preptonian, which is a wonderful compilation of a successful school year; I hope you enjoy reading it.

Anglesey

60 children and staff embarked on an unforgettable expedition to Anglesey in June, staying at Anglesey Outdoors; camping beneath the starlit sky, we enjoyed our final days of Prep School together.

Thrilling activities such as coasteering and sea kayaking pushed us out of our comfort zones, revealing hidden depths of bravery. Scaling towering rock faces and conquering Snowdon’s summit showcased the breathtaking beauty of the Welsh countryside, leaving memories to last a lifetime. Expert instructors from Anglesey Adventures guided us, imparting valuable skills and knowledge about the environment, offering the opportunity for personal growth, boundary-pushing, and adventure.

Many thanks to the staff for their commitment to the trip, which ensured an extraordinary experience for each of us. We will forever cherish memories of camping, coasteering, sea kayaking and climbing. A fitting end to our time at Repton Prep.

Coronation

We had a wonderful morning in school to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III before the bank holiday weekend in May.

We held a formal service for the whole school in the Sports Hall, led by Mrs Harding, where the Pre-Prep serenaded us with their Crown Pageant whilst the Orchestra played the last movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony with aplomb. We discussed the ceremony at Westminster Abbey as it was a historic moment in the life of our nation; a time to reflect on our history, celebrate who we are, and look to our future. The Year 8 members of Chamber Choir performed Lift Thine Eyes from Mendelssohn’s Elijah with great sensitivity, after which the prayers were read beautifully by Year 8 pupils, and we finished with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem.

Our Coronation Fête was a huge success with lovely stalls for the pupils to enjoy, alongside an impressive tea party in the Dining Room; pupils had made some fantastic cake designs which we all enjoyed! The buildings looked resplendent, decked out with flags and bunting and it was a wonderful celebration which highlighted the strength of community spirit at Repton Prep.

Performances and Events

Pre-Prep Speech Day

Pre-Prep Speech Day is such a special day, where we get to celebrate the school year together. The children sang songs from musicals to entertain a packed Pre-Prep hall and we heard a poem from Year Two, reminiscing about their time in Pre-Prep, and House Ties were awarded to them as they move into the Prep. By the end of the afternoon, there was not a dry eye in the house as we ended the year wishing our Year Twos well as they move on to the next stage of their educational journey.

Concerts and Musical Assemblies

Throughout the year, Pre-Prep showcased their performance talents, whether performing a poem, singing or playing a musical instrument. We are incredibly proud of all our children who, at such a young age, are able to give fantastic performances to large audiences, whether individually or as part of a year group or the Pre-Prep Choir.

20 THE PREPTONIAN 2023 PRE-PREP

Christmas Productions

Pre-Prep had an exciting final two weeks of the Michaelmas term, rehearsing and then performing their Christmas productions. Nursery and Reception, alongside Years One and Two, were amazing, performing with confidence and enthusiasm!

YEAR 5–6

PSHE Lessons

Year 5 and 6 have had a busy and varied year in PSHE lessons. Topics have included learning the invaluable skills of First Aid (Year 6), for example, how to deal with an unresponsive breathing casualty by putting them in the recovery position; exploring changes that happen during puberty and discussing the qualities we believe make up a happy, loving family. Year 5 made ‘family pizzas’ and added our essential qualities as toppings such as; kindness, respect, nurture and happiness.

YEAR 5–8

YEAR 5–8

Eco Club Trip

To learn more about the importance of re-wilding and biodiversity, the Eco Club went on a field trip to Theo B’s family farm. The farm is involved in the National Forest Scheme called Changing landscapes, their aim is to establish new woodland and create a diverse habitat for wildlife. Pupils were able to identify numerous trees they had planted from Black Alder and Silver Birch to Rowan and Oak to name a few. It wasn’t just trees, amongst the other projects such as digging ponds and rebuilding an old stone wall, they saw an enormous bug hotel, a barn owl, bat boxes and a perch for the raptors. Many thanks to the Birkin family for this opportunity.

History

History at Repton Prep continues to take pupils on a fascinating journey from our earliest civilisations to modern times. It has been wonderful to introduce pupils to topics as varied as Ancient Greece, Tudor England and Samurai Japan!

This academic year, Repton Senior launched the ‘BroganRose Prize’ for all schools in the Repton Family – a wonderful idea and one that was well earned by Theo B for his thorough essay on the influenza outbreak of 1557.

Particular mention should also go to Rose d S for her entry into the Historical Association’s creative writing challenge, and to Harry B for securing a place in the final of the Townsend Warner competition.

YEAR 3

Exploring Ancient Worlds

The pupils in Year 3 enjoyed a truly exceptional experience as they embarked on a journey back in time to explore Ancient Worlds. Special visitors transported the pupils to Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. On our Ancient Egyptian day, Year 3 were whisked away to the mystical land of pharaohs and pyramids. The children were captivated as they learned about mummification and the fascinating rituals surrounding death in ancient Egyptian culture. They explored burial customs and gained a deeper understanding of this enigmatic civilization.

On Ancient Greece day, they delved into the rich tapestry of Greek mythology, discovering captivating stories of gods and goddesses.

YEAR 3

The children actively participated in discussions and reenactments and had the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities during their own Ancient Greek Olympics. The air was filled with excitement and cheers as the pupils engaged in friendly challenges, experiencing a taste of the ancient sporting traditions. These immersive learning experiences in Year 3 provided an extraordinary opportunity for the pupils to engage with the past. They gained valuable insights into different aspects of these ancient worlds. This memorable day will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression, fostering a love for history and encouraging further exploration of the fascinating stories that have shaped our world.

Trip to Creswell Crags

Pupils enjoyed another successful trip to Creswell Crags for Year 3 to kickstart our year of learning. The children always enjoy the caving experience and the chance to build their own shelters. Rebuilding the skeletons of the cave animals always grants us the first opportunity to practise our perseverance.

THE PREPTONIAN 2023 32 PREP

YEAR 3

Trip to Darwin House

Year 3 took a step back in time when visiting Darwin House this Summer. An accredited museum that was once the family house of doctor, inventor, and published poet Erasmus Darwin, it is a unique place in Georgian history. Year 3 got stuck in to making their own fossils based on the 140-million-yearold ammonites and dinosaur coprolite the collection boasts, while learning about the start of natural selection Erasmus had begun to unravel. The children then got a chance to learn about the history of the house,

investigating some of the Georgian kitchen objects that Erasmus’ staff would have used. They even got to dress up in worker’s clothes and pretend to be Erasmus! A lovely and educational morning spent in Lichfield. ‘Learning about Erasmus Darwin and all his inventions was really interesting. I got to share all my knowledge on fossils and impress the leader. We even got to take home our own fossils! It was such a fun morning out.’

YEAR 3

World War II

The Year 3 pupils embarked on a captivating journey through the pages of history, reliving the events and experiences of World War II. This special day allowed the children to step into the shoes of evacuees, respond to air raid sirens, learn the Lindy Hop, and culminated in a joyous VE celebration tea party with friends and family. The day was filled with laughter, learning and unforgettable moments. Through role-playing and storytelling, pupils immersed themselves in the emotions, challenges, and practicalities faced by children during wartime. The children were introduced to the vibrant and lively dance style of the Lindy Hop, popular during the 1940s. With enthusiastic energy, they learned

the rhythmic steps and embraced the spirit of the era. The pinnacle of the day arrived with a VE (Victory in Europe) celebration tea party, where the pupils and their families came together to commemorate the end of World War II. The children proudly showcased their knowledge, creativity and experiences from the day. This immersive learning experience ignited a passion for history, instilled a sense of empathy and created lasting memories for the Year 3 pupils. The combination of educational activities, fun, and celebration not only deepened their understanding of World War II but also provided them with valuable life lessons and a greater appreciation for the significance of historical events.

YEAR 4

Ecosystems and Animals

As part of our Year 4 Geography and Science enrichment programme, children visited Twycross Zoo. The visit aimed to enhance the students’ understanding of wildlife, conservation and natural habitats. During the visit, the children had the opportunity to engage in an interactive experience, where they observed and learned about various species from around the world. By closely observing the animals in their habitats, they were able to gain valuable insights into their behaviours, needs, and adaptations. This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of the natural world but also nurtured their sense of wonder and appreciation for the diverse wildlife on our planet.

YEAR 4

Be Kind

Year 4 students showcased their creativity in promoting the theme of kindness through a variety of engaging displays. 4H crafted captivating kindness fortune tellers, while 4B filled buckets with acts of kindness and 4O went above and beyond by spreading kindness throughout the world.

Moreover, the students actively took part in educational workshops that focused on the Amazon Rainforest. This immersive learning experience allowed them to delve into the rich biodiversity of this unique ecosystem. Through engaging discussions, they explored the fragile balance between nature and human activities and the pressing need for environmental conservation. Throughout the trip, the children were encouraged to reflect on the current threats faced by our environment and the implications for wildlife. They fostered a sense of responsibility for protecting and preserving the natural habitats of our planet’s diverse species.

YEAR 4

Trip to Open Centre

Year 4 students went on an informative trip to the Open Centre in Derby, where they had the amazing chance to explore different places of worship. A highlight was their visit to the Gudwara, during which they were treated to a delicious meal. This experience allowed the students to learn about Sikh traditions and enjoy the warm hospitality of the community.

YEAR 4

Moving and Growing

Year 4 students began their “Moving and Growing” topic with a fun activity. They traced their bodies and drew their own interpretations of what their skeletons might look like. The results were varied and imaginative, reflecting the unique ideas of each student. This activity marked the beginning of an exciting exploration into the human body and its’ functions.

YEAR 5

Trip to ThinkTank

Year 5 went to Thinktank, the Birmingham Science Museum, where they enjoyed the hands on exhibitions in the Science Garden and the ‘Our World Gallery’, as well as taking part in a forensic investigators workshop and watching a Chemistry show.

YEAR 5

The Woods

The woods are a popular place where the children really enjoy playing all year round. It is always good to see them being used in lesson time too; here are some Year 5’s being creative in the woods during a Wellbeing Wednesday session.

YEAR 5 Outward Bound

Being new to Repton Prep, ‘OB’ was an unknown quantity – as indeed were the three forms of my shiny new year group. Were Reptonians the kind of pupils who would throw themselves at a challenge or was the comfort zone just too comfy to step out of? Year 5 ultimately did themselves proud, with every activity embraced and savoured by all. In fact, the throwing themselves at challenges turned out to be as much literal as metaphorical.

A climbing wall arose on Lakeside to greet us on a warm and sunny morning with 5NC the first to scale it. Before you could say carabiner, the whole form had scuttled up the first two climbs and were eyeing up more challenging ones.

At times, ascents were punctuated by splashes and cheers as another 5LJ canoeist ended up sans boat and enjoying a dip in the lake – some on more than one occasion!

No doubt the freshly-bathed regarded 5RA enviously, as they quickly mastered the art of lighting camp fires and the sweet scent of toasting marshmallows wafted through the air. As if the climbing wall was not enough, ropes and ladders were assembled in the trees and anyone driving along Bumpy Way may have done a double take as Year 5’s swung like conkers or scuttled like spiders up their threads.

We ended with some competitive team-building activities although, by this point, teams were well and truly built and cheering each other on. The commitment to the challenges was excellent, with new strategies quickly attempted where one had not appeared to work.

‘OB’ allowed every member of Year 5 to show their best and they really did, as individuals, forms and a year group. It served as a useful reference point for the challenges of school life and, from now on, Year 5 would be able to accomplish anything.

YEAR 6

Trip to Cranedale

Year 6 visited the Cranedale Centre in North Yorkshire in the Summer Term for a two-night residential trip to carry out field work to support their Science and Geography curriculums. They enjoyed spotting birds such as puffins, gulls and cormorants, observing a large seal colony on the beach, studying ecosystems of rock pools and rivers, and scrutinising cliff and cave formations, as well as having lots of fun together as a year group.

YEAR 6

Forensic Science Challenge

We had a great day completing the Repton Prep Challenge all about forensic science. Pupils had to work out which suspect had attempted to poison Mrs Harding’s kitten (a fictional brief of course!) through a series of exciting challenges in our labs.

YEAR 6

Whitemoor Lakes

Year 6 returned to Whitemoor Lakes in Staffordshire again for their Outward Bound residential trip in September. It was a fabulous experience to bring the year group together at the start of the academic year, and they enjoyed all sorts of activities including high ropes, zip wires, raft building and an assault course.

PREP 37 THE PREPTONIAN 2023

YEAR 7

Black Country Living Museum

Year 7 experienced 300 years of history recreated in the shops, houses, mines and industrial workshops of the Black Country Living Museum.

YEAR 7

Trip to Mount Cook

Mount Cook Adventure Centre was the destination for the Year 7 Outward Bound trip. There were lots of activities on the itinerary: indoor climbing, archery tag, orienteering, land carts, team building and problem-solving challenges, high ropes and campfires. With several new additions to the year group, it was a great couple of days for everyone to bond and get to know each other better.

YEAR 8

Trip to London

Year 8 pupils spent the day in London enriching their Art learning at the Tate Britain and engaging with politics, as part of the PSHE curriculum. They also enjoyed meeting our local MP, Heather Wheeler, who gave our pupils an insightful and open Q&A session prior to their tour and workshops in the Palace of Westminster.

YEAR 7

Trip to National Space Centre

Year 7 took a Science trip to the National Space Centre where they took part in a rocket challenge workshop, visited the Rocket Tower, walked through the solar system and enjoyed the galleries and exhibitions.

YEAR 8 New Common Room

Year 8 have really enjoyed having their very own Common Room to use during morning breaktimes this year – they have had more independence in their own space with tea and hot chocolatemaking facilities and a chance to chat and relax with their friends.

39 THE PREPTONIAN 2023 PREP

Boarding

With the most extensive activity programme to date, numerous themed events and plenty of laughter echoing around the houses, boarding at Repton Prep has never been as fun-filled and actionpacked as it has been this year!

The introduction of an additional Flexi-Boarding house allowed even more pupils to experience how fun boarding can be, and all have been treated to numerous activities and exciting themed events. Alongside our annual and ever-popular Halloween ‘Spooktacular’, Christmas Feast and Beach Party, this year saw our first Glow Disco, Repton-Fest Music Festival and Christmas Miscellany, all of which afforded boarding pupils the opportunity to showcase their talents and party in style!

40 THE PREPTONIAN 2023 FEATURE

Weekend trips to venues such as Alton Towers, Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey and Cliff Lakes Aqua Park proved to be highlights for many. Midweek Junior and Senior Trips to Soft Play and Escape Rooms respectively were also welcome additions to the calendar and helped to promote house unity and teamwork amongst all.

Yet another tremendous year was had by all with numerous essential values instilled. Lifelong (and in some cases international) friendships were cemented, endless fond memories were made, and more compelling evidence supplied to prove that once and for all, boarders of course have more fun!

41 THE PREPTONIAN 2023 FEATURE

World Book Day 2023

World Book Day is one of most anticipated days in the school calendar and this year Repton Prep was once again abuzz with excitement as we celebrated our joy of reading. We were very impressed with the effort children made, both with taking part in activities and devising their costumes - we were host to some very interesting-looking characters!

Activities around school included Hide and Seek Stones, Guess the Shelfie, Masked Readers and Escape the Library. Mrs Sloane led a wonderful assembly which included a staff film about why we enjoy reading and explored literature of the world. There were some inspirational quotations read by pupils, followed by different individuals sharing their favourite title and genre of books. We finished with a great play Call the doctors delivered by Year 8 pupils which we all hugely enjoyed.

Throughout the day our visiting author, B.B. Taylor, ran workshops for all pupils in Years 3 to 8. We had heaps of fun creating characters, plots and asking questions. It was so inspiring for our budding writers to hear about the writing and publishing process from a real-life author. Many pupils, and even a few teachers, also tried their hand at impersonating zombies!

A Year in the Life of the Library

This year has been another happy and lively one in our Library. Book loans rise year on year and, most importantly, the Library continues to offer a welcoming environment which supports all our pupils in both their academic growth and their wellbeing.

Our regular activities such as flash fiction writing and weekly book clubs remain popular and we have added some new ones, including blind date with a book and graphic novel writing. New and sometimes unexpected passions have emerged – knitting and axolotls amongst them! We have read together, we have laughed together and we have supported each other.

One again we tried our hand at flash fiction writing, with thirty-eight children entering Derby Book Festival’s competition on the theme of light. We had many brilliant submissions and were delighted that Eisha C from Year 8 was highly commended for her entry.

Our big new initiative this year was launching our ‘Library Challenges’. The challenges were flexible and allowed the children to unleash their creativity by writing, drawing, making, talking or performing to showcase what they had read. In total, 105 challenges were completed by 53 pupils with highlights including posters, scrapbook pages and even a lavender bag!

It all culminated in a wonderful end of year Mad Hatter’s tea party where we celebrated the achievements of those who had completed three challenges, as well as the contribution of our amazing student librarians.

Fireflies

They’re swarming around me, dodging, ducking, bobbing, weaving an elaborate pattern. Their luminous bulbs light up the night sky, a beautiful sight, a symphony accompanied by their chirrups. Fireflies, a million little pieces, all merged together, working as an orchestra might work in harmony.

Concerts with Repton School

We were delighted to be invited to perform at some concerts with Senior School this year.

Darcy P (harp) and Phoenix Z (violin) performed as a duo and as soloists at the concert in Derby Cathedral in October. Darcy also performed at the Chatsworth concert, also in October, along with our Brass Quartet, comprising of Aaron A-K, Benjamin L, Percy M and Julius L. The Prep Brass Quartet went on to feature in the Onyx Brass Concert in the Beldam Hall in November, having earlier enjoyed a masterclass presented by this eminent brass ensemble. Some of our pianists

hugely appreciated being asked to participate in the two Steinway recitals (Anoushka H, Eleanor H, Amelie L, Phoenix Z, Darcy P, Betsy W and Callista R). The Repton Christmas Musical Celebration is always a highlight for our Concert band and in 2022 it featured our Orchestra too. Party in the Paddock was our final joint venture for this academic year, always a wonderful celebration of music in a relaxed setting.

A Concert at St Wystan’s Church

We enjoyed presenting two concerts at St Wystan’s this year, a lunchtime performance in November and an evening performance in June. In November, amidst some wonderful solos and chamber music, our Chamber Choir shared their lovely repertoire which had been prepared for the St Saviour’s Harvest and Remembrance services, along with carols which were to be performed at the St Saviour’s Carol Service and the school Carol Service at the end of Michaelmas term.

The Summer Concert at St Wystan’s was an exceptionally special one this year as several former Repton Prep students and their families attended for Mrs Bloor’s final concert. With such warmth and support being so truly evident the concert set off on a very special note. The programme was as follows, with each performance moving seamlessly from one item to the next, such is the diligence, organisation and confidence of our brilliant young musicians. Every piece of music was a delight to listen to, accompany or conduct - many will not forget Mrs Bloor’s excitement in the Beethoven somehow resulting in her baton flying off in the direction of the second violins! Again, the children displayed innate professionalism in how they managed to retain their focus.

This evening summed up the musicians of Repton Prepwholly committed, hardworking, enthusiastic, confident and reliable children with whom it has been an absolute privilege to work.

End of Year Events

The last week of the summer term was an exceptionally busy one for the Music Department.

Our ABRSM exams took place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Our Summer Serenade is a delightful outdoor concert in the Quad, featuring both younger and more experienced musicians. This was presented on the Tuesday, late afternoon and we thoroughly enjoyed performances by the Year 3 and 4 choir, the Prepton Players, the Flute Quartet, the Concert Band, Brass Ensembles, Romeo C and his wonderful Erhu, the Musical Theatre Choir and soloists, a harp and violin duo plus the Year 8 String Quartet.

On the following day we joined senior musicians at Party in the Paddock - a great opportunity for some of our orchestra members, jazz band members and flautists to perform alongside their older peers. The Chamber Choir also performed - singing and dancing The Twist! - plus they gave a moving performance of You Raise Me Up with senior singers.

Our Speech Day Concert on the final morning of the academic year is always the annual musical highlight, a showcase of our ensemble and choral achievement. All of our larger ensembles and choirs enthusiastically entertained a large and hugely appreciative audience:

We welcomed Mr Walker (Director of Music at Repton School) to adjudicate. The festival has become a lovely way for our singers to showcase their pieces and Miss Winter was especially impressed by the beautiful singing throughout, all delivered with control and poise. Many congratulations to all but especially to Darcy P, Junior Singer of the Year and Ella-Mae R, Senior Singer of the Year.

MUSIC House Showcase

The boarding community, Chamber Choir, their friends and families joined with the members of the parish church of St Saviour’s for a candlelit service on 4th December. Repertoire for the school Carol Service was performed alongside some hearty singing from the congregation - always a most special start to the festive season.

The School Carol Service took place in Repton School Chapel on Friday 9th December. Benjamin L heralded the start of the service with his sublime solo of Once in Royal David’s City. Fine choral singing was demonstrated by all choirs - Years 3 and 4 Choir, the Boys’ Choir, the Girls’ Choir (accompanied by Darcy P on the harp) and the Chamber Choir. Fine congregational carols were enhanced by the fabulous Willcocks brass arrangements. We welcomed composer/arranger Douglas Coombes to the serviceDouglas had most kindly and generously composed This Christmas Story for the School, a beautiful carol which we sang at both services. Benjamin again most deservedly sang the solo in our final choral offering sung by the Chamber Choir, O Holy Night, with Julius L (trumpet) and Aaron A-K (French horn) adding to the splendour of this performance.

MUSIC

All children in the Prep School were fully immersed in their rehearsals for the House Showcase throughout the termour theme this year was British No 1’s! It is always a super event when every child performs on stage. Houses chose the following songs:

Alexander

Westlife’s You Raise Me Up Mountbatten

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody

Tedder

Wham’s Wake Me Up before you Go Go Wavell

One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful

All houses gave their utmost, working with imagination plus notable drive and energy. It was especially impressive to have pupil pianists accompanying the Houses and all House instrumentalists worked incredibly hard to confidently secure their parts. A huge well done to Tedder House for retaining their title as winners of House Showcase!

Young Musician of the Year

Lent term performances featured five recital evenings - Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Piano and Strings. We had two categories for each instrumental group - Years 3-5 and Years 6-8. Highly Commended performances were selected and acknowledged at our House Showcase/Young Musician of the Year final event at Pears School on

Thursday 23rd March. Finalists from each age and instrumental category were also selected to perform at this final. We welcomed Repton’s former Director of Music, John Bowley, back to the village to adjudicate. Many congratulations to all who performed, especially the Junior winner, Alana P and the Senior winner, Darcy P.

Drama Round-Up

It has been a busy year in the Drama department at Repton Prep. We have had many fantastic performances from Years 1 to 8 take place on the stage in our Theatre.

It has been wonderful to see so many pupils take part in productions throughout the year, as part of the tech team, backstage team and performance cast. We had Years 1 and 2 kick off our performance schedule with their wonderful Christmas production. All of the costumes looked fantastic, with acting and singing talent fully on show. Since Michaelmas, we have had a range of performances from Years 3 to 8 presented to us, demonstrating the brilliant theatrical talent that Repton Prep has to offer!

DRAMA

Our Boarders’ Play A Roald Dahl Medley

The Boarders’ play was rehearsed during boarding activity time and open to all who wished to be a part of it, from Years 3 to 8. The theme was A Roald Dahl Medley and the pupils sang, danced to and acted out famous scenes from his many works. The pupils performed to parents, all boarding pupils (including flexi boarders), and Repton Al Barsha pupils. The final performance was focused and student-led, providing a very entertaining evening for their packed audiences. Well done to all involved, both on-stage and off-stage.

YEARS 3–4

A Christmas Pudding for the Chimney Sweep

Pupils in Years 3 and 4 took to the stage in Michaelmas to perform A Christmas Pudding for the Chimney Sweep, a traditional Victorian Christmas tale. It was brilliant to see all pupils in costumes, with plenty of mop caps and top hats in full view. All pupils performed with confidence and focus, singing a selection of songs and acting in a variety of characters. Students learnt their lines diligently for this performance, ensuring that no prompts were needed and that the final piece was slick. Well done to all who performed!

YEARS 3–4 Do You Remember?

Students took to the stage again at the end of the summer term to perform a small drama piece. This was a wonderful performance reflecting on ‘firsts’ at school. We had scenes depicting pupils learning to tell the time, getting ready for their first day of school and taking part in their first Sports Day! Year 4 confidently acted out their parts, creating some entertaining and reflective moments throughout. Year 3 performed a brilliant dance to Rock Around the Clock and took part in singing a selection of songs. All pupils performed with focus and a real sense of team spirit, changing their own set between scenes, and working together to organise props. A big well done to all!

Drama Awards to Repton

Congratulations to Harriet B, Lucy H, Natasha H, Heidi I-O, Amelie L, Alfie S, Millie-Jean W, Eva W-S (Scholarships) and Isobel E, Freddie F, Lydia M, Sienna M, Ella Mae R, Amelia T and Benjamin L (Exhibitions), on their Drama awards to Repton School.

All of the pupils above worked incredibly hard towards their Drama Awards, committing fully to rehearsals for their final pieces. The standard of each performance was particularly high, with each students’ creativity and imagination shining through. We wish you all the best of luck at Repton and hope to see you on stage in the 400 Hall very soon!

Year 5 and 6 Showcase

Fairytale Characters on Trial

Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in our showcase: Fairytale Characters on Trial. This saw a selection of students perform a range of monologues and duologues from well-known fairytale characters, presenting some interesting twists on classic roles!

All pupils committed to rehearsals brilliantly, working together as an ensemble to bring the piece to life. The controlled characters presented in the monologues were engaging and highly entertaining for the audience.

The final performance was fantastic, with our group ensembles using a range of physical theatre techniques to link the scenes together. Our ensembles worked hard to engage the audience, using the downstage space to present their dialogue and movement. It was impressive to see how these pupils worked together as a team, supporting each other during rehearsals to ensure their unison movements were slick and well-timed.

It was also wonderful to see a group of Year 5 and 6 pupils support on sound, lighting, props and costume. Our tech team followed cues seamlessly from the balcony providing some brilliant music and lighting effects in each transition. Our backstage team worked hard to organise costumes for pupils behind the set, as well as ensuring all our cast had the props they needed. The final performance was a great example of collaborative effort, and congratulations go to all students who were involved.

Year 7 and 8 Production

The Lion King

Our Year 7 and 8 production this year was The Lion King. The play was cast in the Michaelmas term and rehearsals for the show began fully after Christmas.

Collaboration was key in making this show a success. All pupils pulled together to help with singing, learning lines, practising dance routines and moving Pride Rock! The costume, make-up, props and set all worked together to bring the Pridelands to life for our packed audiences.

Our pupils showcased their talents throughout the musical. From the monochrome zebras to Simba herself, the entire cast was fully committed to the roles they played. The determination in each student during rehearsals to ensure that this show was a success was inspirational. The pupils challenged and pushed themselves out of their comfort zones throughout

the production, and the final result was impressive, polished and collaborative. The teamwork displayed both onstage and backstage was fantastic, and a selection of show songs could be heard around school in the run-up to the production and even afterwards! This demonstrates how much a community was brought together during this show, with almost 70 pupils involved.

A massive well done to all pupils involved in the production; the final performances were extremely slick, and this is due to the dedication, hard work, and resilience of both our cast and crew. All pupils should be very proud of the final piece that they created.

ART Photography Competition

2023

The annual photography project held this year invited students from all years to participate, with the theme centred around light and shadow. The response was exceptional, with an impressive collection of over 200 entries submitted for the competition. The judging process was rigorous, involving a panel of more than 10 judges who carefully evaluated each photograph.

After much deliberation, the top three winners were announced. Jasper H emerged as the first-place winner with his captivating piece titled “Friendship First.” His photograph beautifully portrayed two hands, skilfully capturing the interplay of light and shadow. The image conveyed a profound message of connection and friendship, earning Jasper the well-deserved recognition.

Securing the second-place position was Sophia T, whose entry showcased a creative composition featuring a chess piece and its accompanying shadow.

Taking the third-place spot was Lucy H-F, whose photograph depicted a patterned lamp. The image portrayed an intriguing interplay of light and shadow, transforming an everyday object into a visually captivating composition.

Congratulations to all the participants who submitted their outstanding photographs for the competition. The Photography Project not only showed the creative talent of the students but also provided an opportunity for them to explore the concept of light and shadow in artistic ways. The dedication and effort put into each entry were commendable, making the judging process challenging for the panel. Well done to everyone involved in making this event a resounding success.

In May, our school celebrated Creative Week, a vibrant event filled with artistic inspiration. We invited two talented artists to join us, enriching both our Prep and Pre-Prep students’ creative journey. Darcy Turner mesmerised us with his aweinspiring large rolled paper sculptures, which now grace the art studio’s ceiling and the building’s entrance, capturing everyone’s attention. Meanwhile, our PrePrep students delved into the world of felt-making with artist Heidi Street Ward, crafting delightful jungle and mini-beast themed banners that will brighten our hallways. Additionally, they collaboratively created a magnificent mural inspired by the book ‘The Dot’ written by Peter H. Reynolds, showcasing their interpretation and imagination. Creative Week truly ignited the artistic spirit within our school community, leaving a lasting impact.

HOUSE EVENTS

Celebrating a Year of House Events

The House system at Repton Prep plays a vital role in fostering a sense of belonging and team spirit within our school, and this year was no exception.

The year commenced with House Captain hustings, where students had the opportunity to showcase their leadership potential and enthusiasm for their respective Houses. Our passionate candidates delivered inspiring speeches and after careful consideration, the House Captains were selected, ready to lead their Houses towards victory.

Following these elections, Houses chose their respective House Charity for the year. Our school community came together to select four remarkable causes: UNICEF, Derbyshire Mind, Centrepoint, and Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. These charities resonated deeply with our students, and they eagerly embraced the opportunity to contribute to both our local community and those in need afar.

Throughout the year, our pupils engaged in a diverse range of House events that not only developed their academic skills but also emphasised the importance of teamwork, effective communication, and resilience. From the Spelling Bee and intense Maths Challenge to the Geography competition, strategic chess battles, and captivating science challenges, students demonstrated their intellectual prowess whilst proudly representing their Houses.

For those with an artistic flair, a number of creative events awaited them. One notable highlight was the inaugural “Play in a Day” event, where students showcased their creativity by devising short performances based on fairy tale morals. Moreover, the House Photography competition allowed our budding photographers to explore the theme of light and shadow, resulting in a breathtaking display of unique interpretations.

Music enthusiasts took centre stage during the Lent term House Music Showcase, where our talented houses performed an array of “Best of British” hits led by their very own pupil pianists. The students’ passion and enthusiasm for music filled the air, creating an unforgettable experience for all.

Sportsmanship and healthy competition also thrived within our House system, with a variety of sporting events held during Games and P.E lessons. Hockey, football, netball, cricket, and swimming were just a few of the sports in which our pupils showcased their athleticism and determination. However, the highly anticipated Tug of War event stole the spotlight, as it had been postponed multiple times due to poor weather. When the day finally arrived, the pupils’ excitement was evident as each House gave it their all, cheering and supporting their peers throughout.

Undoubtedly, the House fundraising events added a compassionate touch to our year. From the Santa Fun Run and Christmas card design competition, to bake sales and nonuniform days, our students went above and beyond to contribute to the fundraising efforts. The incredible amount raised reflected not only their generosity but also their unwavering dedication to making a positive impact on the world.

This year saw our first ever House Day in which pupils were invited to design logos for their respective Houses. Through a collaborative process with a graphic designer, these logos came to life, and the new vibrant banners were proudly displayed during our exhilarating Sports Days. The sight of students waving their new House banners, cheering on their peers, was a true testament to the unity and pride that our House system instils.

Congratulations to Mountbatten, the deserving winners of the House Cup this academic year. We must acknowledge that every single participant in our House system has contributed to its success, bringing us closer as a community.

Who will be victorious next year?

Greenpower Racing

The past year has been an exhilarating and rewarding journey for the Greenpower Racing Team at Repton Prep.

Pupils from Year 7 and 8 have dedicated their time and efforts to weekly activities, where they learned invaluable skills in maintaining and developing our very own racing cars FR5 and FR7. Their unwavering commitment and teamwork culminated in impressive achievements, including an unforgettable experience at Goodwood and a well-deserved podium finish at Blyton Park.

In April, the team eagerly participated in their first race at the prestigious Goodwood circuit. This event served as a true test of their knowledge, skills, and ability to work as a cohesive unit. Despite encountering a few technical issues during the racing, the team remained undeterred and demonstrated exceptional teamwork and resilience. The hurdles faced during the Goodwood race provided valuable lessons for the team. Rather than being disheartened, they viewed the setbacks as opportunities for growth and development.

Their hard work and perseverance paid off when they competed at Blyton Park in early July. In the F24 category, the team’s efforts were rewarded with an incredible third-place finish. This achievement stands as a testament to their commitment, teamwork, and the remarkable progress they made throughout the year.

The success of the Greenpower Racing Team extends far beyond the racetrack. The project not only provided an opportunity for students to explore their interest in engineering and mechanics but also fostered essential life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. The camaraderie developed within the team is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared goals. We now look forward to the second half of the racing season, where hopefully the team will make it into the International Final at Goodwood in October.

Boys’ Football

With two final-four appearances in National competitions, this was a fantastic year of football for the boys.

The U12s reached the ESFA semi-final of the Small Schools’ Cup for the first time in our history and lost to the eventual winners, Ovingham, but produced some stellar performances en route.

The U13As reached the fourth round (last 16) of the ISFA Cup and went all the way to the semi-final of the ISFA Trophy – again both were hitherto unchartered territory.

The Repton Football League was a huge success once again with some fiercely competitive Wednesday afternoon tournaments in the Walled Garden, alongside an abundance of fixtures for our B-E squads.

The U11s were within one point of qualifying for the ISFA National Finals after they finished runners up in the Midlands regional round and, with half the squad coming from Year 5, the signs are promising moving forward.

The Under 9s progressed well and finished the campaign with a stunning performance at Derby High to ensure that the future is looking strong with a rich seam of talent evident.

However, more importantly was the fact so many pupils represented the school with pride and commitment whilst developing valuable teamwork and resilience skills. A huge thank you to the ground staff, catering team, domestic team, office staff and everyone else who made sure everything ran smoothly this season.

Girls’ Football

This was the third year that Girls’ Football was part of the curriculum and the strides made have been seismic.

For the third consecutive season our U13 Girls’ Team won the Midlands regional ISFA competition to reach St. George’s Park for the National Finals. There were some impressive performances en route and they also reached the semifinal of the Sisters in Sport Plate. The strength and depth across Year 7 and 8 was clear to see as we would often field four to five teams on a Wednesday playing against other schools’ 1st Teams and competing well, with a further 13 wins for our B-F teams.

The Year 6s reached the semi-finals of the regional ISFA competition and enjoyed an unbeaten campaign, whilst there were some real standout moments from the rest of our Year 5 and Year 6 fixtures.

There were festivals for our U9/10/11/13 teams where we welcomed a host of schools such as Fairfield, Loughborough High, Solihull, Terra Nova, Wolverhampton Grammar, Warwick, Twycross, Dixie Junior and RGS Worcester.

Every girl from Year 3 to Year 8 had the opportunity to play football this year and they represented the school with real style. The standard across all the girls has risen markedly and shows the benefits of regular football opportunities allied to those transferable hockey skills from the first term.

Boys’ Hockey

The boys have had another excellent year with their hockey.

They have consistently brought lots of energy to the pitch, and a real eagerness to prove themselves. In lessons they have demonstrated focus and no fear of trying new skills. I have been impressed with the passion they have shown, and it is encouraging to see so many of the boys looking to improve, but also aid the development of their peers, experimenting and challenging one another.

The Year 3 and 4 cohort had a particularly successful year, playing superbly in a number of friendly matches and a tournament. Overall, the boys enjoyed success in the IAPS National Quarter Finals, the In2 Regional competitions, were IAPS Plate winners and qualified for the Independent Schools Cup Quarter Finals. Well done to all involved!

Girls’ Hockey

It has been a true joy teaching the Girls’ Hockey this year.

From Year 2 through to Year 8, it is wonderful to see so many of them working diligently in both the technical and tactical components of the game. The Year 2 cohort have certainly impressed, picking up new skills quickly but also demonstrating strong values, such as determination, resilience, and an upbeat spirit. This stems through all the teams and the girls’ hard work has led to a number of successes this year, such as the IAPS National Quarter Finals, the In2 Regional Finals and Independent Schools Cup Quarter Finals, among many others.

There has been a wonderful sense of enthusiasm in the younger years, which continued all the way through to Year 8, who played some fantastic and mature hockey that they should be proud of; I thank them for encouraging and inspiring the years below, particularly throughout activity time.

Netball

Throughout the Lent term, the girls from Year 3 to Year 8 displayed their passion and talent for netball as they participated in 100 fixtures against other schools, including some intra school fixtures at the U9 level.

The girls approached each game with competitive spirit and a strong sense of sportspersonship, showcasing their skills and abilities. It was delightful to witness the technical development across the year groups, with the girls demonstrating their progress and growth as netballers as they move through the school. Their commitment to improving their performance was evident in every fixture, creating a positive and inspiring environment for all involved. In training, the sessions were marked by the dedication and hard work of all the girls in their pursuit of skill development. Training sessions focused on various aspects of the game, including passing accuracy, receiving, shooting, defending, intercepting and controlling the ball under pressure. The players displayed great determination and a willingness to push themselves beyond their comfort zones to become more proficient in these fundamental areas of skill. Along with the honing of the core ball skills it was fantastic to see the application of set plays in competitive matches develop and open up play, showcasing a growing tactical awareness in the more senior year groups.

As always, the IAPS national competitions provided an exciting opportunity for the girls to compete against schools outside of their regular playing circuit. The U13 squad travelled to Sedbergh and participated in a superb round-robin competition. Despite a strong performance, they narrowly missed out on national qualification by just one goal. The U12 squad journeyed to Ipswich for a full day of netball, where they performed admirably. In a highly competitive group, they finished in third place, securing a spot in the plate quarter finals. Although they were eventually knocked out in a tightly contested game, they can be proud of their efforts. The U11 squad competed in the High 5s competition at Rugby and had a great day, enjoying the experience and playing well. The fine margins between qualification and elimination were evident once again. Overall, the IAPS national competitions provided valuable experiences for the girls, allowing them to test their skills against different opponents.

Well done to all the girls who represented the school on the netball court this year! You were a credit to the school, playing with a smile and great enjoyment even on the coldest of days!

SPORT Cricket

The final term saw cricket take centre stage at Repton Prep.

Across Years 3 to 8 there were over 200 scheduled cricket fixtures. Although the first few weeks of summer term saw games cancelled or postponed due to weather, fixtures were soon in full flow.

The 2023 Summer Term was the first time Repton Prep played with mixed gender teams across all age groups, with the exception of some competitions. This allowed students greater opportunity to perform and participate in games and festivals which they may not have done before.

The Year 3 and 4 pupils showed great determination and enthusiasm for cricket this year, developing their overall skill and understanding of the game. For a lot of pupils, this was their first experience participating in cricket training and games, getting a taste of what is to come in the future.

For pupils in Year 5 and 6, they were able to further develop their love for the game with many participating in hardball for the first time. Though some were tentative at first, they soon developed their confidence and applied this well to different games and festivals.

Finally, the Year 7 and 8 pupils began to develop a greater understanding and passion for cricket. It was incredible to see the hard work and effort which every pupil put into games and training in order to improve. Throughout this time, it was clear to see how every pupil enjoyed their participation, playing with smiles on their faces. A highlight was the U13 Girls reaching the IAPS National Quarter Final and finishing as Indoor County Champions.

Congratulations to all those who participated in fixtures this year. Keep up the hard work ready for next season and hope for sunny weather.

Tennis at Repton Prep School continues to thrive and develop, with the girls’ team demonstrating great enthusiasm, cooperation, and skill in their numerous inter school fixtures.

The players have shown significant improvement across all abilities, resulting in a pleasing standard of tennis being produced. Over thirty girls who selected tennis in the summer term represented the school regularly, displaying their passion and enjoyment for tennis.

A highlight of the tennis season was the National IAPS two-day tennis competition held on Sunday 18th and Monday 19th June. The National IAPS Tennis Competition brought together prep schools from across the country, providing a platform for talented young tennis players to showcase their skills. Repton Prep entered three pairs into the tournament: Jasmine M and Frankie C, Eleanor H and Skye B, and Eisha C and Shola A. The girls participated in singles and doubles matches over the course of four games, displaying exceptional sportsmanship, teamwork, grit and determination.

Throughout the competition, all three pairs demonstrated their talent on the courts. They consistently showcased their abilities, combining strategic play with technical ability. The highlight of the competition was the outstanding performance of Eisha and Shola, who progressed to the final. The match against Taunton was closely contested and went down to the final doubles game as a decider. Their exceptional teamwork and determination paid off as they emerged victorious, clinching the title of IAPS National U13 Champions. The longest match of the weekend also belonged to the Repton Prep pairing of Skye and Eleanor who battled their way into 6th place; a super effort.

The challenging course spanned open and muddy fields, testing the athletes’ endurance and resilience. IAPS Triathlon at Monkton Prep - Sunday, 21st May

On Sunday 21st May, the Repton Prep Squad travelled to Monkton Prep to participate in the IAPS Triathlon. For many of the squad members, it was their first experience in a threediscipline event, making it an exciting and challenging endeavour.

The triathlon began with the swim leg, which proved to be a test of endurance and technique.

After completing the swim, the athletes transitioned into the bike leg, which presented a unique set of obstacles on a hilly grass course. The undulating terrain required not only physical strength but also exceptional bike-handling abilities.

The Repton Prep Squad showcased their determination and resilience as they pedalled their way through the challenging course. Despite the steep inclines and uneven surfaces, the athletes remained focused and determined to deliver their best performances.

The final leg of the triathlon was the run, which proved to be the most demanding segment of the event. Following the swim and bike legs, the athletes were already fatigued, yet they pushed themselves to their limits. The tough running course demanded mental fortitude and physical stamina, as the girls and boys faced fatigue and muscle soreness.

It proved to be an exceptional day of sport in which the Repton Prep Squad demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and camaraderie throughout. Each athlete pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones, showcasing their determination and resilient attitude. For many squad members, this was their first exposure to a multi-discipline event, and their performances were commendable. Sports Tour

1st and 2nd Team Hockey and Football Tour to Amsterdam – July 2023

On a bright July morning, 47 enthusiastic pupils from Year 7 and Year 8 assembled at Birmingham Airport and the anticipation was palpable as we embarked on our longawaited Hockey and Football Tour to Amsterdam. On arrival at our hotel, we settled into our new surroundings and ate dinner at a local restaurant. The day culminated in an exciting quiz night followed by an early night to recharge for the adventures ahead.

Our second day was packed with activities. We began with football coaching at FC Amsterdam, a thrilling experience as our pupils worked closely with one of the club’s coaches. Afterwards, we ventured to the iconic Johan Cruiff Arena for an awe-inspiring tour and some souvenir shopping. The time spent in the souvenir shop was testament to the excitement and eagerness of our group. Many football shirts were purchased and the staff wondered at one point if the pupils would have any money left! We suddenly became a branded Ajax Football squad! It was a fantastic start to our tour.

The next day saw us transform into tourists in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. We embarked on a leisurely boat trip along the UNESCO-listed canals, absorbing the historic surroundings, quaint narrow buildings, and iconic low bridges. Our exploration also included the canal view of the Maritime Museum and the Anne Frank House, providing a rich cultural experience. Following this, we eagerly participated in our first football matches against VV Spirit. All four games were closely contested, and it was a pleasure to share the post-match tea with our hospitable hosts.

Our next part of the tour took us to Kampong Hockey Club, where both staff and pupils were astounded by the warm welcome and excellent facilities. To our delight, we had the opportunity to watch the Dutch international U16/18 squad as they prepared for the European Championships in Spain. After our training session and a bit of shopping at the local hockey store, we headed to VMHC Cartouche for our hockey fixtures. Once again, our hosts were so welcoming, and we played in some exhilarating matches. The boys first team finished on a very close, nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out!

Our final day in Amsterdam coincided with the largest storm to hit the Netherlands in decades. Undeterred, we, the “Brits abroad,” proceeded with our beach day plans. Fortunately, the storm passed through, allowing us to enjoy a somewhat windy but ultimately enjoyable day at the beach. Despite the challenging weather, everyone had a great time.

In conclusion, a huge thank you to all the dedicated staff members who generously contributed their time to make this tour a resounding success. Also, to the pupils, for their endless energy and enthusiasm which made this tour an unforgettable experience and a fantastic end to the school year. We couldn’t have asked for a better sports tour venue - Amsterdam, with its mix of sports, culture, and adventure, proved to be an ideal destination for our hockey and football tour. Here’s to many more successful tours in the future!

Sue Bloor

In her fifteen years at Repton Prep, Sue has led the Music Department and all the extra-curricular music and ensembles with great passion and dedication. She has inspired countless young musicians both to continue with instruments and take up new ones and seen those pupils through from their first lessons in Pre-Prep to being accomplished musicians, regularly achieving Grade 5-8 ABRSM levels by Year 8. Sue worked tirelessly for those pupils and provided the very best opportunities for them to grow their talents. From the annual cycle of concerts that were always exceptional quality (no one will forget this year’s Speech Day concert for a long time) to the trips she has led, such as Ypres, every performance and concert she has put on has been a memorable highlight of the year. The House Music event each Lent term is always a wonderful occasion, and Sue has always taken this challenge on enthusiastically, both with our Young Musician of the Year competition and the House Music competition itself, which Tedder have naturally had more than their fair share of wins in over the years! There have been a number of national celebrations and ceremonies in her time at the Prep too, and Sue has always risen to the challenge and ensured that the children are front and centre, learning the skills to perform on their own for a variety of occasions, from Remembrance Day to the Coronation, always setting the appropriate tone.

Sue has managed a large team of Visiting Music Teachers and she has always led and organised them well, ensuring that few lessons are missed and the teachers are well informed of any important updates each day. Sue leaves the Music Department a thriving hub of the School for the new Director of Music to pick up the baton. She will be hugely missed by all, both professionally and personally, but we are delighted that she will be staying on to teach some peripatetic music lessons next year alongside new projects. We wish her all the best in all that she turns her hand to from here.

Craig Bowles

Craig joined Repton Prep in September 2021 and quickly set about making the Design and Technology workshop his own, creating dedicated spaces for his projects and reworking the curriculum. In his short time at the School he made a big impression on pupils and introduced them to the skills needed to take an idea from design stage to fruition. He supported two cohorts of pupils through their Design and Technology Scholarship assessments both

Grace McGee

Grace joined Repton Prep in September 2021 as Head of Classics as well as moving on site to the main building to be part of the boarding team. She will be remembered by all as a warm and caring character who was passionate about bringing Latin to life and inspiring future generations to take up Classics in its many forms. Her quirky personality ensured that the pupils immediately warmed to her lessons and many took up opportunities for extra-curricular Latin and Greek as a result. She developed the Latin curriculum to be inclusive for all and believed that the Classics were for everyone to enjoy, especially the stories of the classical Romans and Greeks, which often entertained the pupils! She also taught History and PSHE and her wide general knowledge base always inspired pupils to aim high in their academia.

Matthew Duigan

Matt had a great impact upon the young people of Repton Prep throughout his time here. The pupils thrived on his kind-hearted and patient manner, and it was clear that he genuinely valued them. For the PE Department, Matt was superb with the teams he oversaw, making each player feel like the next star of the future. Continuously positive, encouraging and fully immersed in the matches, his postgame reports were always a joy to listen to. Matt was a great help pastorally in form for 5RA and it is evident that he was a highly liked member of the School. A few comments made by the pupils include:

‘Makes you laugh and friendly; Amazing at singing songs with me; Always willing

to Repton and other senior schools to great success. Not only will he be missed by pupils for his skills and support in the D&T workshop but he also supported two Year 8 forms pastorally, led Sports teams on a Wednesday afternoon and was pivotal in re-starting the Greenpower racing team after a covid-induced hiatus. We wish him all the best in his next endeavours.

In the evenings she was an integral part of the boarding team and the pupils enjoyed many fun evenings and weekends in her charge. She was always willing to go the extra mile and support anyone that needed it. Alongside her teaching, Grace will also be remembered for her impressive singing performances that we were treated to occasionally, including a memorable solo in House Music, and her love of knitting, which inspired a number of pupils to take up knitting and crocheting. Knitting rapidly became a popular break time pursuit for many! Grace joins Shrewsbury school in September and we wish her all the best for this exciting new chapter.

to help; Always available to talk to and he will listen. He was a great friend to me in boarding; Always smiling.’ Being a member of the boarding team meant Matt was fully involved with the boarding community. This was an area that he thoroughly enjoyed, but most importantly allowed him to express his theatrical side, playing the role of Little Red Riding Hood in the Boarders’ production when a pupil was unable to do so. This demonstrated Matt’s selflessness and willingness to help when needed. It has been a pleasure working with him; he has many wonderful attributes that will take him far in life. We wish him all the best for the future.

THE PREPTONIAN 2023 91 STAFF LEAVERS

Adam Southorn

Dashing, debonair, laid back, cricket lover and all-round good chap, Adam has been a valuable asset to the school. His two-year stint at Repton Prep as a Resident Graduate Assistant saw him reach the self-proclaimed dizzy heights of ‘lead grad’ this year and that sums Adam up a treat – he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

He’s always got a glint in his eye at the thought of a wind up or practical joke and no one in the PE Department was safe. Mind you, he was often the recipient and took it with good humour and a smile.

Adam made a lasting impact as he took on the Physical Literacy programme and made it his own. He is a strong advocate for inclusivity and opportunities for all and was the coach for our U13 C Football team this year with the perfect approach.

Aderyn Rigney

Aderyn joined the school in September 2015 and quickly established herself as an essential member of the PE Department. Throughout her time at Repton Prep, she demonstrated dedication, passion, and a natural affinity for teaching PE to the pupils in her care. Her love for the subject was evident in the way she engaged with the pupils and imparted her expertise and enthusiasm on the games field and in the pool.

Aderyn displayed a particular passion for netball and took a proactive role in developing the sport within the School. She became the Head of Netball not long after she joined and organised our first ever Netball Tour to Malta. Sadly the pandemic took hold, and we were unable to travel. With her exceptional coaching skills and friendly demeanour Aderyn was a well-liked figure among both pupils and staff. She had a special ability to connect with the girls, fostering a positive and supportive environment on the courts. We wish Aderyn and her family all the best in their new adventure.

Nothing was a problem for Adam and he was a terrific photographer as well as a huge source of amusement on many away day journeys where he multi-tasked as warm up man, assistant manager, photographer, and physiotherapist whilst we travelled the Midlands and beyond in various football fixtures.

I’ll also miss his weekly summer report on his performance for Warwick Cricket Club although I’ll need to check www. playcricket.com to see if his averages really are that good!

‘Adam has developed hugely in his planning, time keeping and teaching over the past two years and I wish him every success as he moves on to pastures new to begin his teaching journey.

Alice Boston

Alice joined Repton Prep in September 2022 and from the very beginning, she stood out as a humble and hardworking individual. Her quiet demeanour and her unassuming nature made a lasting impression on those she encountered, earning the respect of both staff and pupils alike. Alice displayed from the start an innate ability to connect with the pupils, to understand their needs, and to tailor her approach accordingly. She possesses the rare talent of imparting knowledge in a way that made learning enjoyable and engaging for the pupils; teaching just comes naturally to Alice. We wish her well at university next year and hope to see her on the sidelines supporting pupils once again in the not too distant future. Best of luck Alice!

THE PREPTONIAN 2023 92 STAFF LEAVERS

Molly Dickins

Molly joined us with a degree in Modern Languages as a Graduate Assistant in September 2022 and immediately impressed with her enthusiasm, professionalism and ability in the classroom. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Molly readily agreed to take on classes of pupils new to French and taught these groups alongside supporting other classes. Needless to say, the pupils made excellent progress under Molly’s tutelage and came up with some outstanding results at the end of the year, having had a great deal of fun along the way too.

As well as proving invaluable to MFL teaching, Molly offered huge support in other areas too, assisting with 6AG, helping out with boarding duties (particularly in Nightingale), accompanying pupils on numerous trips and

fixtures and last – but by no means least –taking on innumerable cover lessons, always with good grace and never a complaint! I do believe that at one stage Molly led the cover charts by quite a margin, something for which all colleagues at The Prep are eternally grateful! It is unusual for a graduate assistant to take on so much responsibility in the classroom but Molly was very much an exception, viewed by all who had the pleasure to work alongside her as a very safe pair of hands with a maturity which very much belied her age.

Molly leaves us to undertake a PGCE qualification at The University of London where I am sure she will continue to impress. Here, and in her future career, we wish her the very best of luck.

Rob Spalton

Rob joined the Music Department at Repton in 2014, initially as Head of Brass covering both Senior and Prep. Rob’s enthusiasm for teaching and innate love of his trumpet playing was clear from the start and his passion for inspiring future generations of brass players pervaded throughout his time with us.

In time Rob moved to the Prep as a teacher of class Music in addition to his trumpet and cornet teaching which he continued at Prep. Rob’s lessons were always full of life, Year 7’s study of the rise of pop music springing to mind as children were heard eagerly mastering their chord progressions on the piano and with Year 8 Rob developed a most well-structured Music Tech course, film music being just one ever popular module. Rob also introduced an allclass brass course to Year 4 which offered group tuition in cornet or pBone. Rob was always a huge support to me, particularly in relation to developing technology within our departmental administration - he was especially passionate about recording performances and sharing these with parents whenever possible, this interest later being extended to helping children in his classes to record their own compositions.

Rob’s vision and commitment to ensemble coaching helped to initiate the rise of several ensembles, notably a high profile Brass Quartet, a most promising newly formed Brass Quintet, the continuation of our successful Concert Band and the immediately popular and, new for this academic year, Prepton Players.

Rob was always incredibly keen for our young musicians to perform beyond school and he set up a link at Derby Royal Hospital where our brass players entertained patients, visitors and staff as the Christmas season approached. He also engineered other fabulous performing opportunities including a memorable workshop at Prep followed by a concert in Lichfield Cathedral with the internationally acclaimed trumpeter, Mike Lovatt.

I know that two of the most special memories which Rob and I share are of taking a Brass Ensemble to the Menin Gate Ypres on two occasions to perform at the Last Post Ceremony. Our second visit was when we commemorated the end of the First World War. To perform at such a moving and significant occasion with our wonderful young musicians who played so beautifully, doing so with great sensitivity and poise, is one of those moments which none of those present will ever forget.

You have been great fun and a privilege to work with Rob, thank you.
