CHARITIES REPORT summer 2021

As lockdown restrictions have continued to ease, it has been exciting that many fundraising events have been able to resume and new and imaginative challenges have finally been able to get underway. Indeed, these charitable endeavours by the Radley community, including boys in all year groups, parents and staff, have increased in number, ambition, and innovation over the year. There is also a growing sense amongst the boys of how their fundraising and volunteering can impact on communities and the wider society. There have been many highlights during the Summer Term 2021 which include: Sports Centre Duty Manager, David Ralston, cycling 500 miles as part of the Alzheimer’s Society Cycle for Dementia campaign; Hamish R, March T, Max H and Edward M with a sell-out sale of ‘Radley trackies’ raising funds for The Ruth Strauss Foundation and the Batten Disease Family Association; Kai and Lily-May P-C undertaking a two mile three legged walk round Radley to raise money for the British Asian Trust’s Covid 19 Appeal, and Sam Pullen-Campbell and the SERV team who, in conjunction with St James the Great Church, continue to collect generous food donations from the College community and deliver them to the Abingdon Foodbank.

E-Social played an epic 24 hour football match for the Footsteps Foundation earlier this term; Johnny E and George T took on the challenge of rowing a tub double from Radley to Henley and back , also for the Footsteps Foundation. The generosity of the whole College community was in evidence before Leave Away, when 102 bikes were donated to Oxford Hub’s Ready Set Go Challenge and a 20Twenty staff cricket match took place for The Ruth Strauss Foundation. Radley Cricket is also fundraising for ‘Cricket Builds Hope’; George B and Seb C supported the Sea Cadets by rowing from Radley to Barnes Bridge; Becky Burns and the G Social 6.2s, along with a number of Sub Tutors, walked 40 km from Radley to Henley to raise money for Refuge; Nithin S organised fundraising for Save The Children India as part of the Warden’s Music Concert, and finally, eleven different chosen charities were supported by the Social’s Fete Stalls on the last day of term. Overall, a magnificent sum of over £140,000 has been raised for many important charitable causes since the start of the academic year. In addition, time has been given for volunteering and community help which has been particularly appreciated during these difficult times.

“Ms Burns’ Social Prayers enlightened G Social to the intensified issue of domestic violence during lockdown. From then on we felt inspired to set ourselves a challenge that we could use to raise money for the amazing work being done by Refuge.”
