CHARITIES REPORT michaelmas term 2021

It’s been fantastic that many postponed fundraising events have been able to take place this term. These have been undertaken in many tried and tested ways, whilst also embracing new and imaginative challenges. However, these remain very difficult times for many charities who give vital help and support to others, and this has been greatly appreciated amongst the boys when reviewing how their fundraising and volunteering has impacted on these communities and the wider society. Highlights during the Michaelmas Term 2021 include: Sam Pullen-Campbell and the SERV team who continue to regularly collect generous food donations and deliver them to the Abingdon Foodbank; several 6.2s and staff growing some spectacular moustaches and other facial hair for Movember, a further collection of bikes for the Oxford Hub, a substantial collection of sports equipment for Oxfordshire Youth with the cricket items going to Asylum Welcome, H Social holding a Hymnathon in Chapel for Dementia UK, the annual Poppy Appeal collection in aid of The Royal British Legion, a prize draw and charity staff quiz night for Luke’s Fund (Ronald McDonald House Charities) and a charity golf day for Maggie’s Centres. A number of Radleians played in a 24-hour tennis marathon at the National Tennis Centre in aid of Bright Ideas for Tennis and Radley College residents supported the newly formed Oxfordshire Afghan Aid (OAA) project by donating hundreds of useful items to support refugees arriving at Brize Norton as a result of the crisis in Afghanistan.

More recently, a Badminthon challenge has taken place in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, as well as a second hand uniform sale raising funds for Oxfordshire Youth and our annual Christmas Jumper day for Shelter. Finally, various marathons and fell running events have also been completed by a number of staff and students for hospices, centres supporting children and young adults with special needs and disabilities and mental health charities. Taken as a whole, over £40,000 has been raised for many important charitable causes since the start of the academic year thanks to the generosity of so many people. Much time has also been given by boys, staff and parents volunteering and providing community help which has been particularly appreciated during these difficult times. Coming soon … the collection of gardening equipment for Young Person’s Supported Accommodation / Oxfordshire Youth, a Radley team beginning their running training for the Oxford Town and Gown raising funds for Muscular Dystrophy, a Watt bike event and cake sale for Headway Oxfordshire, a shoe cleaning machine raising funds for Bullying UK and Radley hoodies and Radley pint glasses for sale, both of which will raise funds for charities close to the hearts of the boys involved.

“I have loved working to collect sports equipment, as I hope it can give many the opportunity to pursue sports that they enjoy. The experience has also given me understanding of how collective efforts towards something can make a real difference.”
