CHARITIES REPORT lent 2021

2021 continues to be a difficult time for so many, and charities, especially smaller ones, are also finding this period extremely challenging with huge financial pressures. However, despite most of the Lent Term being Virtual Radley 2, boys, parents, staff and the whole Radley community continue to come together to fundraise and volunteer for causes close to our hearts. There have been many highlights including: Lucas W baking for doctors and nurses in hospitals; Will L, Alex A and friends cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats fundraising for laptops for local schools; Sam Townsend and Harry Lyons not only running a marathon but also organising RCBC’s charity challenge to raise over £15,000 for Young Minds; two recent ORs, Archie Barrow and Tom Sweetnam, procuring an outstanding 3,000 England football kits for a charity, Kit4Kenya, that they set up whilst at Radley, and Sam Pullen-Campbell and the SERV team who, in conjunction with St James The Great Church, regularly collected generous food donations and delivered them to the Abingdon Foodbank.

Radley Football supported #Challenge45 to help raise funds for Sobell House; Radley Sports and Peter Bennett, along with Will M, George O and Edward P got us motivated to support and fundraise for @OxfordHub in the Ready Set Go Challenge (pictured on front cover); the second ‘Art for the Heart’ online art auction was launched, supported by both the Sewell Centre Gallery and the Zuleika Gallery to raise money for Maggie’s Oxford; Suzie Naylor and Dora C performed brilliantly in the Community Action Zoom Concert for Vale House, and Cassandra Russell ran at least two miles and did over 101 sit ups each day in February to raise funds for the NHS. There have also been many other acts of kindness and generosity, such as boys gardening for others and helping elderly relatives and neighbours. Overall, aside from the volunteering and community help, a magnificent sum of over £51,000 has been raised for many important charitable causes since the start of the academic year.

R A D LE Y

“The Ready Set Go Campaign raises money to help children and families in Blackbird Leys, Oxford, access everything they need to be able to cycle. This includes a bike, helmet, lock, lights, high viz and tuition where needed. It costs a total of £100 per person to receive this whole package and Radley College’s help means we can reach more children and families. It is so important for everyone to be able to access cycling as it has such a positive impact on physical and mental wellbeing. Thank you so much to everyone who has been involved so far!”
