The Learning Zone at Dell Quay is visited by many children from both the local area and around the country, learning about the geography, history and wildlife of Chichester Harbour. St Paul’s C of E Primary from Addlestone in Surrey was made special by being the largest single school group that the Learning Zone team has ever hosted. One hundred and twenty children visited East Head and West Wittering beach. The school’s lead teacher, Jeanette McHugh said “We got everything we hoped for from the day and more, the children learned such a lot in a wonderful place and we’ll certainly be back.” One of the children commented, “This is the best trip ever!”

Postcode Publications Emsworth launches new Website The Emsworth Business Association is delighted to announce the launch of its new website – www.emsworth.org.uk After several months of evaluating a number of high quality proposals from members of the EBA the committee commissioned Oyster Marketing & Design to design and maintain a new website. The decision was reached based on a mix of cost, sustainability, support, ease of use as well as vision and The committee felt ultimately that Oyster were best placed to deliver these objectives. Oyster have also agreed to sit on the committee when required so that the links with the Association and the website are that much stronger. This is a really exciting development for Emsworth and not just the businesses within it, as the intention is to ensure a very strong community feel running through the website, encompassing as many parts of #EmsworthLife as possible. It will allow the EBA to go to a new level of being more proactive when it comes to communicating with both its members and the public. “The committee have worked on the website for almost a year and we are

delighted with the results. Oyster really understood from the beginning our desire to make this very much a community based website and I think they have succeeded. PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED Brave (or Foolish?) Ticketing Move! WemsFest has made either a brave or foolish move in order to increase audiences for its 3rd arts festival. Tickets for all but 3 of the 35 events have been priced at just £5.00 until 31 August when they revert to their full price which can be as much as £12.50 each. Artistic Director Mark Ringwood explained the reason behind this decision which is seen by many as a bold move given that the festival relies entirely on box-office income: There are fundamental reasons: 1. Fundamentally we wanted to make the 30+ events as financially accessible to as many people as possible. 2. If we sell a substantial amount more tickets in August through this discounted scheme it increases the opportunity for ‘word of mouth’ marketing which we hope will raise the awareness of WemsFest even more. 3. Advance sales at this vastly discounted price will give us an indication as to the potential overall popularity of the programme and enable us to plan accordingly.

Arun & Chichester Air Enthusiasts Society (Air Aces) announce an autumn feast for aviation enthusiasts Capt Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown, the subject of the recent BBC documentary, ‘Britain’s Greatest Pilot’, has just confirmed that he will give his final lecture to Air Aces on Monday 22nd September at the Chichester Park Hotel, Westhampnett Road, Chichester, 7.00 for 7.30 pm. Admission for members is £3, nonmembers £5 and under 16s FREE. Capt Brown, now 96 years old, received a standing ovation from the audience of over 100 at his last talk to the society, who were completely in awe of the man, what he had experienced in aviation and the last war, and how he held them spellbound for two fascinating hours. His final talk will be entitled ‘The Struggle to Break the Sound Barrier’. Earlier in September, renowned Harrier Test Pilot, John Farley will tell the amazing story of his journey from an engineering apprentice to Hawker Siddeley’s Chief Test Pilot at Dunsfold, and his role in convincing

governments around the world that the Harrier was the aircraft to buy. ‘From Apprentice to Chief Harrier Test Pilot’ is on Monday 8th September. Of great local interest will be the 27th October talk, entitled ‘Westhampnett at War’ presented by Mark Hillier. Mark will be talking about the major role that Westhampnett, now Goodwood Aerodrome, played during World War II. As well as being home to a remarkable array of aircraft types, from Spitfires to Barracudas, Typhoons to Avengers, Westhampnett hosted squadrons of pilots from six allied nations as well as from Great Britain. Air ACES is an aviation talk society, providing its members with regular talks, given by experts in many different fields related to the world of aviation. These talks cover subjects such as test flying, piloting iconic aircraft, RAF, aviation industry, air displays and many other related topics. Hello, it’s me Giggles, the out and abouter reporter for The Cat and Rabbit Rescue, Sidlesham Kittens galore down here and we are bursting at the seams. I have been looking through the windows on tippy paws and there are mums with babies everywhere. Even some poor little kitties without mummies that are being hand fed every few hours by my busy, busy staff. We have had 220 kittens here so far this year and they are still pouring in, along with so many unwanted and abandoned cats. I know my readers are responsible caring families who would never dream of letting their animals breed, causing this huge problem. If you need help with getting your cat spayed, give us a ring and using local vets it will cost you £10, as CRRC picks up the rest of the bill. Spaying your cat is so important! Oh and one more thing I thought you would like to know….. I have a new best friend .His name is Caellum and he's very much like my old friend Lenny Long Legs who sadly died a few months ago if you remember. Say hello to Brody. Brody is a 4 year old black and white male who has been with us since January 2014 after being found as a stray in Leigh Park. He is such an affectionate boy and enjoys lots of fuss, although he will be quick to tell you once he’s had enough. He also has a very unique, squeaky meow that he uses to greet fellow cats and humans alike making him even more special. Brody is desperate to find his forever home and is just waiting for the perfect, understanding owner that he deserves to come and adopt him. Tesco providing a Community Room Liz Jones the community champion for Tesco Havant Extra tells us that a Community Space will be provided following the store’s major refit currently underway - open 26th August 2014. Tesco hope to complete the work by the end of August, to include community space which is free for any group or club in the area to use. The room will have tea and coffee machines and free tea coffee sugar and milk.

Tesco will provide 4 laptops for club uses with free wi-fi. I’m getting married – do I need a pre-nup? Pre-nups are big news at the moment. A Wheel Challenge

Havant Mill and its water-wheel

A piece of local history was created in February 1987 when this static replica mill wheel was lowered into place in the preserved remains of the mill race alongside the new office development, Langstone Gate. The four metre high, 1.5 tonne wooden wheel is sited on land belonging to the Highways Agency. It was made by apprentices at The Unicorn Centre in Portsmouth. The last 27 years have taken their toll, and the future of the wheel is now at risk. The axle on which the wheel rests has rotted,

causing the wheel to list precariously. Plans are being made with kind permission of Seaward Properties the owners of Langstone Gate, for the wheel to be removed and laid down on adjoining land. The Wheel will then be dismantled to enable installation of a new axle hopefully to be crafted by HAMESH - the Havant town centre Men’s Shed supported by Postcode Publications who will meet all costs associated with this community project.

Volunteers with the Havant Cemeteries Project spent a sunny summer’s day giving New Lane cemetery a fantastic spruce up. The garden around the holocaust memorial was weeded, trimmed and more gravel was added to act as mulch. Ivy and other weeds were removed from the flint walls to prevent their roots from damaging the walls. The wildlife was also enjoying the summer weather. We saw many butterflies including gate keeper, meadow brown and red admiral. Robins and gold finches were

flitting around and the meadow was abuzz with the sound of grass hoppers and crickets. The Conservation Volunteers time supporting the project is coming to an end shortly. However, all the good work will be continued by the volunteers who have formed their own community group, Friends of Havant Cemeteries. At The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre we’re really proud of our Research Room. It’s a great resource for the people of Havant; and for the wider community too. Visitors come to find out more about the area’s history and even to research their own family background. The Research Room is a valued aspect of The Spring’s facilities, and is highly regarded locally. So it’s with great surprise and considerable disappointment that we’ve discovered that around 100 books have gone missing from our Research Room. We find it hard to believe that anyone could have deliberately taken them; but perhaps people have absent-mindedly put a book

into their bag and taken it home by accident. If you find you do have a book that belongs to the Research Room, we’re holding an ‘amnesty’ whereby you can bring the book in anonymously and put it in a box in the museum. We would very much like to recover all our missing books! At the same time we’d like to invite anyone who has a book or document of interest that they no longer need, to come in and donate it to The Spring’s collection. Streets will not be paved with litter Havant’s campaign to clean up the borough’s streets gathered pace this week with more than 500 people now being fined for dropping litter since the campaign was launched in May. Havant Borough Council decided that a different approach to littering was needed for those residents and visitors who persistently dropped rubbish, flicked fag butts or left behind their dogs mess. There is no excuse for littering, if you drop litter you will be issued with a FPN. No warnings will be given. There are over 2,000 public bins across the borough for residents to dispose of their rubbish correctly – not having a bin nearby is not a reason to drop litter.” Those who believe they will get away with it are reminded: • There will be no warnings, you will be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for dropping litter, cigarette ends or chewing up. Also for not cleaning up after your dog • That you can use bins without ashtrays,

extinguish the cigarette first, then place it in the bin • No bin doesn’t mean no fine – not having a bin to hand is not an excuse for littering • Placing a cigarette end down a drain is still an offence which will result in a Fixed Penalty Notice • Placing rubbish in a stream is an offence and will result in a Fixed Penalty Notice • Failing to give your name and address is an offence under the Environment Protection Act 1990 Section 88 (8B) We want you to tell us where there are problem areas for littering and dog fouling, so that we can step up enforcement activity. Around 100 villagers in Westbourne, near Emsworth, turned to pedal and foot power for their annual Family Fun Ride and Stride. The event, organised by environmental group Greening Westbourne, is designed to encourage residents to walk or ride for short journeys. It's a joint event with the local 20's Plenty campaign, which wants to see 20mph limits on residential roads as a safety measure. Food and Wine Interesting and Humorous Wine Facts (or not!). By Jonathan Rogers from The Solent Wine Experience To get us in a jolly summer mood I have researched and compiled a few wine facts, some interesting, some not, some humorous, some unbelievable, to get you excited. Have you ever wondered where the word wine comes from? No, neither have I, but I researched it and found that the origins of the word are lost. There are similar words from all the ancient languages (Greek oinos, Hebrew yayin, Latin vinum) and it probably grew out of ‘win’, a word from a now forgotten Mediterranean language meaning ‘root’. When was wine invented? We know it’s been around for thousands of years but the first recognizable wine made from grapes was produced in Bronze Age Georgia and Iran (c 6000BC). However, rice wine was already being made in China. Labels were not around though and these were first put on wine bottles in the early 1700s, but it wasn’t until the 1860s that suitable glues were developed to hold them on the bottles. You may just beat the record! Wine critics are plentiful, both on TV and in newspapers and magazines. The writer I most admire for his personality and his sheer passion about wine is Oz Clarke. He has been writing wine for a long time now and I remember watching him when I was younger on the Food and Drink programme thinking I would like to do that. But the very first wine critic was Roman historian Pliny the Elder. He rated a wine from 121 B.C. as a vintage “of the highest excellence” and he wrote about it in The History of the Roman Empire around 70 A.D. The wine though was 200 years old at the time. Lovely! Reduced Sugar Banana Cake I enjoy eating cake but I find many cakes sold in shops are overly sweet with a much higher sugar content than is really necessary. I have created this banana cake recipe to make a healthy version of a naughty ‘treat’. Rather than using processed white flour I have used whole wheat flour, oats, oat bran and wheat germ instead. You will be pleasantly surprised at how light this cake will taste but with the extra fibre from the different dry ingredients, along with the walnuts and seeds that have been added. I am sure this recipe will be one you will want to cut out and keep. For more information about cookery courses available with Kathy please go to: www.foodfiendexp.com Ingredients 100 g butter, salted 2/3 cup brown sugar ½ cup whole wheat flour ½ cup wheat germ ½ cup oats ½ cup oat bran 2 eggs 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp of mixed spice ½ tsp of cinnamon 3 super ripe almost black, bananas 50 g walnuts 1 to 2 tbsp of sunflower and pumpkin seeds How to make: 1. Cream the butter and the sugar together till fluffy. Photo 2. Add the beaten eggs and mix lightly. 3. In a bowl, mix thoroughly, the whole wheat flour and other dry ingredients, the baking soda, baking powder. 4. Mash the bananas and add lemon juice and mix. Stir into the sugar and egg mixture. Photo 5. Now add the flour mixture to the banana mixture and mix thoroughly. 6. Chop walnuts and add to the batter. 7. Line loaf tin with grease proof paper, pour the batter into it and sprinkle seeds on top. 8. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 30-35 minutes, till a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy

Mash the bananas, add lemon juice and mix

Chop walnuts and add to the batter

Pour the batter into lined loaf tin and sprinkle seeds on top

Bake for 35 mins or until inserted skewer comes out clean

Local Companies look after our coastline! WW1 commemoration and teambuilding day

Two Havant based companies, Lockheed Martin UK and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals spent two days undertaking environmental tasks on Hayling Island and Langstone Harbour. The first session took place on a sunny day in the Wildflower Meadow at the top of Hayling Island. In conjunction with The Hayling Coastal Conservation Group, a volunteer-led environmental task force, Pfizer employees spent the morning cutting & sacking wild docks, thistles & ragwort. Tony Craig, a Pfizer employee who lives locally, said: “It’s great to be involved in such a fantastic local project that really benefits the environment and the communities who enjoy spending time here”. Lockheed Martin UK, a large employer based in Havant spent their session supporting Friends of Langstone Harbour, a Conservation Group which promotes interest in Langstone Harbour, working for its maintenance & improvement for local people and wildlife. Bob Kramer,Vice President and Group Managing Director of Lockheed Martin UK – Integrated Systems said, “As a major employer in the area, Lockheed Martin UK has an important role to play in the local community. Our employees are encouraged to volunteer their time and expertise to help with local

projects, and we were delighted to be able to work with the Friends of Langstone Harbour to collect 18 bags of litter from Budds Farm beach on Saturday. I know the team found this a very rewarding and worthwhile activity and we really hope the area can be enjoyed by many people throughout the summer”. Community First HEH facilitated the events and Janet Duggan,Volunteer Service Co-ordinator, said “it was fantastic to see local business professionals giving their time to support the local community.Volunteer support from the business sector is vital in supporting local groups, who themselves struggle to find volunteers. Service children and their friends from across Portsmouth and East Hampshire joined forces for a WW1 commemoration day at Fort Purbrook. Around 200 youngsters took part in the day – designed to commemorate those lost in WW1 and develop team building skills. One of the activities, run by Barratt Homes, involved teams racing against the clock to wrap one of its students in newspaper – something community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick said had tested the students’ organisational skills – as well as providing plenty of laughs. “We were pleased to be involved in such a great WW1 commemoration event and think that the children really enjoyed the team building element of the day,’’ he said.

Bridging the gap HISC Get Racing Club succeeds at building racing confidence for members

The new HISC Get Racing Club has been hugely successful in bridging the gap between the experienced, core group of HISC racing members and those standing on the shore wishing to get into racing for the first time. Launched at the start of this season the club relies on experienced member volunteers to assist those members keen to have a go at racing by offering tips, skills and coaching as well as putting on a series of informal races on selected Saturday’s. June saw another two highly successful Get Racing Club events with a good number and mix of boats attending including RS 200’s, RS Qubas, Lasers and RS Visions. Both weekends saw sunshine and good winds which enabled the participants to build their confidence and develop their racing skills in a fun and friendly, learning environment. The volunteer mentors, all hugely experienced racing members, focused on key themes including getting to the start line in time and the use of outhauls, downhauls and kicking straps; a real improvement was seen amongst the Get Racing Club participants in terms of their race starts and sailing skills by the end of the sessions.

Mentoring tips and advice progressed at the most recent event, to working on helming skills to achieve a more efficient line through the water and moving around the boat more dynamically in response to wind changes to keep the boat speed consistent. The racing last weekend was fun and relaxed with several capsizes due to the shifty and gusty wind conditions; the 200’s dominated the day and were the overall winners. Special thanks go to the HISC Mentors Andy and Karen Partington, Nick and Kate Peters, Jude, Steve Storey, Graham Williamson and Mark Pollington who gave up their time and teaching skills to put on the most recent HISC Get Racing Club events. Lions give over three thousand children a Day of Fun It takes a little imagination to picture three thousand youngsters all in one place, all having the time of their lives. Nevertheless the Lions Clubs of Hampshire and Dorset achieve that once every year at Paulton’s Park. Throughout the region, individual Lions clubs sponsor children and transport them there, usually by the coach load. One little girl said “I was so excited I couldn‘t sleep at all last night”. During the journey one could feel the excitement and anticipation. In our coach we started them all singing. That was loud enough and there were only fifty of them. Arriving at the Car Park this number increased sixty fold, all having to queue to get in and be given tickets which allowed them Freedom to do whatever they wanted all day long. Many of the younger ones headed immediately to Peppa Pig’s World. This fantasy could hold them in wonderment for hours and for some did just that. The more adventurous were off to the fair ground rides. There were helterskelters, rides which spun them around, others more sedately sat on a Merry go Round horse and listened to the fairground music as they rode. They could even have a free ride on a train to see all that the park had to offer before they chose where to start At the far end of the park were the go carts racing around a track with all becoming racing drivers and adopting the name Hamilton. If they wanted even greater scaremongering there was the drop or perhaps the switch back. There were some rides which the adults thought even more

sick making but the young people enjoyed and laughed all the while. At long last hunger took over and in groups they would retire to be given a packed lunch. No sooner was that down than they were off again but by now the sun was taking its toll so the Water Flume and log rides attracted as the water cooled them a bit. Less energy but also fun was watching or feeding the seals and then perhaps a Splash in the paddling pool. The choices seemed endless. It was interesting to watch the decrease in energy from the first adventure to the cry “All back on the Bus”. Rounding them up was an art on its own but the reward in seeing so many smiling faces and hearing the exchange of all the things they had done and would remember for many a year, was a wonderful reward for the organisers

A carvery with a difference! - a Three Course Lunch and a Tea Dance afterwards! Sinah Warren's Hotel Sunday Carvery is worth a visit if only for the relaxed surroundings and quality of service. Priced at £11.95 the lunch offers excellent value. The menu gave us a choice of four starters or a visit to the salad bar. I selected the Mackerel Rillette, my colleague Rustic Liver Pate and our two female companions both elected to visit the Salad Bar. All very good food and nicely presented as well. The visit to the Buffet followed with a choice of Roast Beef, Turkey or Honey Baked Gammon with of course a selection of Vegetables,Yorkshire pudding etc. Menu choices included Oven Baked Haddock and Three Cheese Tart. A choice of five desserts were available but most of us elected to stay with just Ice-cream or a Trio of Mousses, but I went for the traditional Apple Pie and Custard. A comprehensive range of wines and beers are always available.

I must add that our waiter Lukasz from Poland: who has worked at Sinah Warren for two years, was extremely attentive, knowledgable and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for him. This venue is really stylish and what I liked was the totally relaxed atmosphere it generated - very good service and of course the option to spend a hour or so afterwards in the Pavillion for a dance or two! I did speak to a number of patrons who said the same thing "nice surroundings and excellent value" and some I spoke to came most Sundays. Sinah Warren Hotel is indeed unique - it has a very rural feel with extensive frontage to Langstone Harbour. This location contributes hugely towards the total ambience. So if you want to try a Sunday Lunch with a difference book yourself a table at Sinah Warren and take your dancing shoes with you!

Horizon Leisure Centres held its second annual swimming gala at Waterlooville Leisure Centre on Saturday 19 July. The gala, which is for Horizon Swim School participants, saw over 80 swimmers from level 4 and above show the progression they have made from attending their

lessons at both Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres in a variety of front crawl and back-stroke races. The gala was provided free of charge and the Centre was packed with parents, grandparents and guardians cheering on their children. Each child who finished in the top three places took to the winners rostrum and received a medal and every child went home with a swimming bag full of goodies. Swim School Manager, Debbie Yabsley said ‘The gala is a chance for the participants of the swim school to showcase their ability in a fun, competitive environment supported by family and friends‘ Parent, Caroline Aylott, added ‘My daughter Alyson took part in the swimming gala at the weekend and had a wonderful time. It really did boost her confidence to swim in front of crowd and perform so well. As a P.E teacher myself I understand the amount of organisation that goes into creating an event like the gala, I would like to say thank you for organising it and thank you to all the staff that helped out on the day.You all did a fantastic job and made one little girl very happy! Horizon Swim School provides over 250 swimming lessons weekly at the Centres, attended by over 2000 children of all ages and abilities. Chief Executive Howard Broad, who was given the honour of being official race-starter said “It’s always

great to see a plan come together. Congratulations to Debbie and her team of volunteers who worked so hard to organize the event which was a huge success. Members of the local Fibromyalgia support group and their families and friends enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon recently when they held a “Cake Bake -off” to raise funds to help find a cure for fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that causes various symptoms including widespread muscularskeletal pain and stiffness throughout the body. The judges had a difficult task, tasting lots of delicious home-made cakes but a winner and two runners up were finally chosen and then the cakes were enjoyed by everyone. A raffle was also held and the

total raised in the afternoon was over £200. The organisers, Gill and Karen worked very hard to ensure the afternoon went well and were “really overwhelmed” with the generosity of everyone who went along. The local Fibromyalgia Support group welcomes new members to their friendly lunch-time monthly meetings at The Red Lion pub in Horndean. What’s on What is the WEA? When I mention the WEA people often ask what the letters WEA actually stand for. The official mission statement explains that the logo WEA represents: “The Workers’ Educational Association (WEA), which is Britain’s major adult education organization, is a national charity recognised and supported by central and local government. It is committed to equality of opportunity and lifelong learning.” The Havant WEA runs a full programme of Courses and Day Schools on subjects ranging from Art Appreciation and Literature to History and Film Studies presented by professional lecturers who are experts in their field. The WEA also runs centres such as the Omega Centre in Portsmouth where, in conjunction with the City Council, adults with special needs are given a wide range of opportunities from literacy lessons, musical stimulation, drama and art to boost confidence, aid learning development and motor skills. At the annual presentation in the Omega Centre in July this year, it was heartening to see how so many adults benefiting from their special education as they confidently entertained a large audience with singing, extracts from Shakespeare, poetry and music. 'DEALER'S CHOICE' The award-winning Bench Theatre will stage Patrick Marber's brilliant play, 'Dealer's Choice' in September at The Spring. It was originally seen at the National Theatre in 1995 and transferred into the West End in the same year. Patrick Marber is best known for 'Closer', subsequently filmed with Julia Roberts. The Bench presented the play in 2009. Five men gather in restaurant, late on a Sunday night, for an all-night poker game. The ritual of this weekly event is disturbed by the arrival of a professional gambler determined to collect an overdue debt. This is a play about compulsive gambling and how those held in its grip deal with the demons that drive them. Friendships and family ties are all put at risk. 'Dealer's Choice' is both comic and savage - and written with a pitch-perfect ear for the language of the desperate and the forever hopeful. The play does contain strong language. To celebrate the occasion current owners', Paul & Mike Lillywhite and staff held an open day with many of the interesting vehicles they are involved with on display including the famous ‘’Old Yeller II ‘‘, which has returned from its classic racing in America and Australia especially for this event – yes it is the original not a copy! Built in 1959 as a 6.5 litre Buickengine one-off special at Hollywood Motors by owners Max and Ina Balchowsky and driven by Dan Gurney, Carroll Shelby and Bob Bondurant as well as many legendary drivers of the time and, of course, builder/owner Max. The old part of the garage at the front of the current premises was set up as an old workshop showing how it used to be with many tools, equipment, artefacts and pictures on display from their collection much of which is original from the early days of the garage. The modern workshops were also open to see the vast array of equipment and technology that keep today’s modern cars on the road, with live demonstrations running throughout the day. Emsworth and District continues support of local swim club what we can to support many local HSWC is a team of dedicated young swimmers, aged between 9 and 17. They often travel to compete in top level regional and national competitions and it requires them to train regularly. The Club's recent training camp took place in the pool at the prestigious Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London on 19th July. This session follows on from the successful trip during May, which allows the children to develop their skills in the pool. The Swim Club is a not-for-profit organisation which relies heavily on generous donations from local business for the club’s continuation and their needs for travel was met by Emsworth and District. The company, who has been looking after the travelling needs of the local people of West Sussex and Hampshire for more than 37 years, kindly donated the use of a coach to the team of 17 youngsters. The company is a regular supporter of HWSC and this is the third time Emsworth and District has provided travel. Caren Austin-Lea, Director at Emsworth and District Motor Services said: “When we heard about HWSC’s need for a coach for their training camp, we were keen to get involved. We do

Cystic FibrosIS Shouting louder, party or no party! Now that the Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s 50th Anniversary Year has only 5 more months to run, it is time to take stock, and report progress. When the Trust announced that it was holding a No Party Campaign, the local Portsmouth & Isle of Wight Branch (which covers Havant) understood completely, as everyone knew all too well that many precious lives are still lost, despite great advances in treatment and life expectancy. The Trust thought it appropriate that there should be no celebration, until all young people with cystic fibrosis can celebrate their 40th birthdays.You can read about this at: www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk The Branch, however, had already started to organise a Vintage Tea Party, to mark this special year. We carried on: there was no choice! It duly took place at the Tithe Barn, Ditcham, gifted to us for the day, in our gloriously sunny midsummer. Because cystic fibrosis is rare (and so there are few of us) 50 supporters and friends , gleaned from the Southampton borders to Chichester, including a large contingent from all parts of Havant, got together , to provide tea and entertainment for two hundred. We raised £5000, thanks

to team work between the old and the young. Local people involved included Horndean’s 23 year old vocalist/actress Becki Short who sang vintage songs, and introduced the other performers: Rebecca (13) playing guitar,Verity (10) playing the harp, seven ‘Nightingales’ who also sing in the Renaissance Choir, Emsworth,’ Quinzhee’ a Waterlooville band, and Anna Jo, a songwriter from West Sussex, who sang her haunting newly recorded ‘‘Breathe With Me’’. Local firms kindly provided raffle and auction prizes for the event, and will be thanked on our page, www.facebook.com/CFPortsmouth.Vintage car owners also brought their beautiful vehicles to add to the fun and vintage atmosphere. Meanwhile, the past months have brought us publicity in the local press and fantastic support from individuals and from the Hayling Island Sailing Club, the Seacourt Tennis Club, the Golf Club, Zizzi in Port Solent and Alliott Wingham in Fareham; and others! On the wider front, there has been encouraging news about a new drug which

may help the majority of CF patients, and the Trust has campaigned hard for changes to procedures in allocating organs, as sometimes a lung transplant is the only option for very sick young people. There is also a new book out by Tim Wotton, a one-time Hampshire hockey player, who is now 43, works hard, still plays sport, and cares for his beloved wife and

son. It chronicles his daily struggle to combat cystic fibrosis, balancing the demands of this cruel disease, with appreciation of all that is good in life: One of the lucky ones, so far, and an encouraging story for young parents. So yes, let’s not celebrate 50 years, until everyone has a similar tale to tell.

Motiv8 Havant is running the National Citizen Service (NCS) for young people age 16 & 17 for 4 weeks from 21 July to 15 August. NCS offers a residential activity week, a range of opportunities to build confidence, learn new skills, meet new people and take part in a project to improve the local community. And to just have fun with new friends! The Motiv8 NCS group includes young people from across the Havant borough as well as those who already are involved with Motiv8, from attending Motiv8 youth clubs to seeking advice about career choices at Motiv8 drop-ins. Part of the attraction to join the NCS programme comes from young people seeing the opportunity to travel away from home for the first time in their lives and take part in an activity-filled

week at Avon Tyrell Activity Centre in the New Forest. This leads on to three weeks of activity in their local community. Many of the group have strong opinions about their local area and see this as a chance to be heard, influence change and support local group. The fact that, for the older ones, this is a recognised achievement that can be a valuable addition to their CVs, makes NCS even more appealing.

There’s an interesting backstory as to how the Cops ‘n Coffee store in Greywell Precinct came about and it involves the glamourous world of American police, a seeming far cry from the quiet streets of Leigh Park. In something of a cliché, the town police department of Claire, Michigan were unhappy to learn that their local doughnut shop, which could trace its existence in one form or another to 1896 was to close. So dismayed were the nine strong department, that they bought it. What they didn’t see was what a huge success they had on their hands. So much so that they now have stores in other US locations, and even sell their coffee online. Back in England, Sergeant Garry Smith of Havant police was looking for ways to engage with the people of Leigh Park in an informal setting on a low budget. Previous incarnations had included a community office in the library, but this hadn’t been a massive success as, according to Sergeant Smith, people just wanted to use the library services, and a police post was perceived to be somewhat extraneous. But when he visited the Policing for the Ages event at Gunwharf Quays in 2013 he met some delegates representing the Cops and Doughnuts chain, and an idea was born. Now celebrating its six month anniversary, Cops n Coffee has become an integral part of the furniture in the revival that the Greywell Precinct is currently enjoying. To celebrate they ran a children’s treasure hunt with the help of ten local businesses, and Sergeant Smith fully acknowledges that without them and other partners, Cops ‘n Coffee would struggle to survive. “We’ve had so much help and support from the local community and traders. From the free use of the shop front from the landlords, to Tesco who supply the coffee. Kenwood gave us a coffee machine, and Asda help with sweet treats, and have also provided volunteers to help man the shop through their own community volunteer scheme.

Not to mention we were assisted from the outset both in financial terms, and help at events by local firm, Big World Impact.” And Cops ‘n Coffee has gone from strength to strength, “initially we only opened every other Saturday,” Sgt. Smith explains. “But due to such a good response from everyone, we are now open every Tuesday and Saturday. BEN BROOKS Ben Brooks of Warren Park is a call centre agent by day. By night he is a radio DJ and singer songwriter who is just starting to be noticed by those in the know. His song, The Girl Who Cried Wolf was recently discovered by a BBC Radio Solent producer on the BBC Introducing website; here musicians upload their songs in the hope of being noticed. If you’re lucky you’ll get a call from the BBC, and all being well you’ll get played on the radio. Of course this tale of overnight success has been many years in the making. Ben has been plying his trade in smoky pubs and clubs for a decade now with his band, The Skies, and more recently as a solo artist. He’s twice played the Victorious festival, performing on the Acoustic Stage in 2012 and the Busker Stage in 2013. And in September he will be supporting successful singer-songwriter Wilfy Williams, who featured in a profile in Edition 14 of this paper, on his homecoming gig to promote his new album. Not content to rest on his laurels, Ben recently started to present a show to

the past, such as Solange who grew up in Paris. She and her family had German soldiers billeted on them, and she remembers how considerate they were, always taking their boots off so as not to wake her family. “Unlike the French troops,” she adds with a twinkle in her eye. And what she has to say on war is perhaps a timely reminder to the present generation. “War is terrible. It just gets people killed. I don’t believe in war, but Hitler had to be stopped . . . It left me empty inside for many years.” Which is why this new DVD is such a valuable resource, and a genuine community effort. I’m not altogether sure that the Duchess of Richmond, and Major General Douglas Graham of 50th Infantry Division, have ever been compared before; but they do share an unusual link. On the eve of Waterloo, the duchess organised a grand ball in Brussels, attended by the great and the good. And whether Gen. Graham was aware of the similarity or not, he decided that the best way for his officers to become acquainted before D-Day was to hold a dance. And as the officers and men under his command performed the task of taking Gold Beach admirably, he may well have been onto something. This is just one tale told by the participants of Wemfests’ excellent DVD, This Was Our D-Day; produced by Millstream Productions of Emsworth, with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. It tells the tales of local residents’ memories of D-Day, starting with the buildup, and right into the thick of the action. Pagan Lord is the latest offering from the prolific writer, Bernard Cornwell, best known for his Sharpe series. It follows Lord Uthred a Saxon earl, dispossessed by his wicked uncle of his inheritance, the great fortification of Bebbanburg, better known nowadays as Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. Regular readers will have seen Uthred grow from a young Christian nobleman, kidnapped at the behest of his aforementioned uncle by raiding Vikings. However Uthred soon amasses a reputation as a formidable warrior, and is adopted by his captors, taking on their ways and throwing over the Christian God for the more capricious pantheon of the Danes. And even when he eventually ends up in the Christian court of Alfred the Great, he still holds to the old gods, much to the disgust of the king and the multitude of priests with which he surrounds himself. However, by the time of Pagan Lord, Alfred is dead, and Uthred angers his successor Edward by accidently killing an abbot with whom he was arguing. Forced by these circumstances to flee with few men, Uthred finally decides that it is time to assault Bebbanburg, and with his tiny crew that is exactly what he does. The writing is raw, and Cornwell handles his hero with a panache garnered over decades of tuning his craft, and even though this series is now on its seventh outing, it still feels fresh and original. And I’ve always had a particular fondness for the Warrior Chronicles. Hayling Island is mentioned in the foreword to each book as an interesting example of Saxon attitudes to spelling – and its many alternatives. Also Havant was used as a location in one of the earlier books of the series, so he gets my vote for that! The Pagan Lord is out in paperback now.

HAVANT’S HEROES Everybody knows that the Great War ended in November 1918. We are taught this in school, and it is a well-known fact. So I was as surprised as the students of Havant Sixth Form College were, when they found a soldier on the town’s war memorial, who had died in May 1920, when they were researching it for an extra-curricular humanities project. The soldier, Major Sir Frederick Fitzwygram was a member of the Fitzwygram family, who sold the land on which Leigh Park is built to Portsmouth City Council, and is included on the memorial because he was still a serving soldier when he died before the official end of WWI on 31 August 1921. So the guns did indeed fall silent in November 1918 in response to the Armistice; however it took a further three years for the official end of the war. The film itself follows three names from the memorial; Major Fitzwygram, Archibald Paxton and Ernest Deadman, because all three had female relatives who worked in Langstone Towers hospital, and the students felt that this was an interesting coincidence. The background behind the film is also of interest. Students were discussing a news story with Steve Murray, Curriculum Director of the Arts, at Havant College, which reported that a developer wished to

Many of them mentioned that they had never particularly noticed the monument, despite it being opposite a favoured coffee shop, and so the decision was made to research some of the names, and make a film. They managed to secure funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and commissioned Daniel Mustey of Emsworth based Millstream Productions to produce the project, and the resulting film is quite

Rustle, Bustle & Squeak First Havant Girl Guides visited Stone’s Allotments in New Lane, to learn all about how produce is grown for their Rustle, Bustle & Squeak nature badge. Trustee Jim McNaught-Davis welcomed leader Lizzie Chisnell and the group and gave them a tour of the grounds, with the help of individual allotment holders. First Havant was formed in 1916, and it is one of the oldest Girl Guide troops in the country; and indeed, the world. And the girls certainly lived up to their history, asking informed questions and showing genuine interest in the different types of produce. I asked some of them what they had learned about, and Guide Emma told me about all the different types of vegetables they had seen. Her friend Abby, added, “We saw some purple potatoes, and a runner bean that I first thought was a potato.” I then asked if anything had surprised them and Lauren replied, “I was surprised that some flowers turn into fruit and vegetables, I didn’t know they did that.” The Guides ended their tour by being shown to a small test patch where they saw some bee friendly plants which the allotment holders want to encourage. Mr

simply remarkable. The production values are of the highest quality, and the presenter, student Holly Patrick is a natural in front of the camera. She brings a warmth and empathy, that is entirely unforced without being condescending, and I predict that this is not the last time we will hear of her. The film is well researched, and the viewer is completely immersed in the various threads of the story, and it comes to a neat conclusion and crucially leaves you wanting more. McNaught-Davis went on to explain how important bees are and their vital role in the ecosystem, then led them to an area which is being set aside for the project. There, Mr McNaught-Davis explained how they were removing the weeds in order to give the bee friendly plants the best chance. “First the weeds are allowed to grow until they totally overrun the plot. Then we cover them in dark plastic sheeting, which stops them from seeding, so they die off. Then we can dig the plot over and plant the flowers we want.” Hopefully this visit will have encouraged some of the Guides to take a further interest in gardening and growing vegetables, and everyone at Postcode Publications wishes them all the best in their efforts to win their badge.

In memory of the many individuals that were involved in the First World War, artist Ian Banfield is creating work based on photographs that many young men and women had taken prior to making their departure. The project will run for the next four years and will culminate with an exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the signing of the armistice. The work seeks to remember all of those involved and welcomes applications from all ranks, sexes and countries. SCHEME FACES CLOSURE

A popular scheme faces closure by Christmas, unless funding can be found to continue. The Junior PCSO Scheme takes twenty-four pupils from Havant schools Front Lawn Academy and Warren Park Juniors, and gives them a taste of police life, while carrying out valuable community activities. The scheme coordinator, PCSO Jake Kibblewhite is appealing for funds or help in kind from local businesses to ensure the continuation of the project. “Havant Borough Council has been very supportive from the beginning, but the funding they gave us runs out in December, and that would probably be the end for us. We also couldn’t have got to this stage without the help of Asda in Havant, who have helped out with volunteers and the use of their mini bus. I also want to thank Brilens Printing of Portsmouth, who produced a great uniform based on the childrens’ designs, at a substantial discount.”

Jake Biggs of Portsmouth Water Sports Centre agrees it would be a shame for the scheme to end, and so offered the group a 50% discount on a raft building exercise. “It’s a pleasure to help in any way we can. It’s a great opportunity for young people and we wanted to do our bit in recognition of their community service.” I asked Junior PCSO Olivia what she had gained from the project and what she had enjoyed about it. “They showed us how they take fingerprints when people are arrested and how to I.D. them. And we also packed bags at Asda and organised a litter pick with the whole school taking part. The Havant branch of Cancer Research UK held a thank you barbeque for staff and volunteers, and their friends and family, at the home of volunteer, Chris Sharpe. Mr Sharpe welcomed visitors to his Bedhampton garden, and produced an excellent spread that everyone agreed was delicious. A spokesperson for Havant Cancer Research UK, said that they wanted to

Walking Football arrives in Emsworth! Havant Borough Council, together with the Havant Sport and Physical Activity Alliance are supporting new fun, walking football sessions in Emsworth. The football sessions are aimed at those who have probably not played for quite a time but would relish the chance to play again. It could also appeal to those who would just like to get fitter in an outside environment, meet new people and have fun.

The aim of walking football is to help people to continue an active lifestyle, especially those who may have suffered injuries to continue playing the game. The sessions are intended to help players with

their balance and co-ordination and encourage individuals to come along and socialise with other likeminded people. There is no need to pre-book, simply just bring yourself, a drink and a pair of trainers. Walking Football is a new concept on the traditional game that the Football Association has supported with the launch just three months ago, of a Walking Football Scheme. Walking Football is designed primarily for those aged 50+ who wish to play football in a format that enables them to do so. The rules used are similar to those for five a-side football, with one key difference - no running! The sessions are held every Tuesday at Emsworth Recreation Ground, Horndean Road, PO10 7PT from 5-6pm, and are open to all residents of Havant Borough. The first session is free, after which there is a joining fee of £10.00 and a £3 match fee. Our intrepid sports correspondent Tim Randall returned to his football roots at Emsworth ‘Common’ to report on this new element of the game.

When I arrived at the Recreation Ground the pitch had been already been set up by the organisers Innovations Fitness and a warm welcome was provided by ‘Topsy’ Turner. In no time there were enough takers for two five aside teams. After a fun warm-up session and a quick résumé of the rules we were playing. Each team had one lady in the line-up. The banter was fun silky skills soon flowed back. In what seemed like no time at all (but actually 1 hour later) the final whistle sounded. I was exhausted a feeling that seemed to be shared by all. After the session organiser Topsy Turner said ‘It is very encouraging that so many have turned up this evening. The signs are that interest is already growing’. Emsworth resident Graham Wilson told me ‘I came to the first session last week. It’s

great fun and I enjoy the fact that it is really competitive, just as I remember from when I used to play. I would say to anyone thinking about it – come and give it a go!’ Sabina Jerram, one the ladies participating, gave the match a topical air as she is from Germany and had shared in a lot of the evenings good humoured banter. She said: “That was fun and my first ever game of football. I’ll be back.” It was clear that everyone had found it strenuous and enjoyable. I turned for home feeling tired but exhilarated and reflecting on how much I had enjoyed the thrill of playing football again. I will be back for more. Sailing - Their Future in Their Own Hands In any sport there are many routes for beginners to get started. In terms of sailboat racing Hayling Island Sailing Club is world-famous for the range of opportunities it provides for those wanting to learn to sail, and develop racing skills. The sailing club has an open to all philosophy, with RYA courses for children, youths and adults, private tuition, specialist coaching and mentoring. For those new to the sport HISC also has a fleet of 30 well maintained dinghies to help getting started. For children living on Hayling Island aged 10 to 16 runs with no other means of getting on the water, there is the HISC Thursday Evening Club. Launched by long time Club Trustee and expert sailor Mike Baker in 2005, it gives Hayling Island school children the chance to try sailing. Run by volunteers, access costs just £2 per session. Over its 10 year life the scheme has already introduced over 300 children to sailing. From the outset Mike Baker enrolled the assistance and experience of Olympic Gold Medalist, Mike McIntyre. Many other top sailors and coaches have also provided input. The Thursday group runs from May to October. Weekly turnouts average some

40 children. Each child enters a training scheme to build their confidence and skill set. As well as providing the opportunity for the children to sample sailing for the first time, the Thursday Club can also have a significant effect on the personal development of some of the children, helping them expand their circle of friends or improve their school work. Longer term the children are encouraged to develop dinghy racing skills. A few have already gone on to compete at a national and international level. Mike Baker recently told ‘Yachts & Yachting’ a leading National yachting magazine: ‘The children start sailing from nothing, some haven’t been on the water until they join us. I find it tremendously rewarding seeing them grow in confidence and improve their behavioural skills. After just a fortnight they have a respect for the water and they change, becoming a different sort of person. I also notice that children with Down’s syndrome go from being very quiet and introverted till suddenly they come out of their shell and offer to help. It’s quite amazing.’ Brothers Jake and Ben Todd started sailing through the Thursday club. Jake, aged

16, has featured in earlier reports in Postcode Publications. Jake became a national champion in the RS Feva Youth Class, finished second at the world championship, and is now in the RYA 29er national youth squad, while Ben, 14, is the national RS Feva youth squad. Both boys joined the Thursday Club after hearing about it through school; mother Geraldine reflected: ‘I’d see a load of children just hanging around at the park and stuff and I didn’t want my boys to do that. We went down to Thursday Club and it felt like everybody else was born with a boat on their back, we didn’t even know the basics, but everyone was so friendly and the boys really loved it. ‘They’re now in national squads and travel all over the country, all over Europe, and they’ve learnt so many skills. When I thank the coaches, it’s because they’ve brought them on to be such nice boys, they’ve given them confidence and they even study better, and I’m sure it’s because of the sailing and the discipline it involves, and the nice people they hang around with and the places they’ve visited. It’s been an incredible journey for them.’ She says the boys do paper rounds and

Jake works in a chip shop after school to help fund his sailing: ‘He crams in loads but he knows if he keeps working, he’ll get results - sailing has taught him that. It’s taught him to keep his head down and keep going and for parents that’s brilliant’. Jake, who was about 10 years old when he first started Thursday Club, describes Mike Baker as a “legend”: ‘I went once and wanted to go again, then started racing and got addicted. I’ve got such a big friendship group from it and travelled all over as well. I wouldn’t be the same person I am now without sailing.’ Mum Geraldine’s comments about the positive effect the boys’ sailing development process has had on their educational studies should not surprise parents. The development processes in sporting and educational talent fields are very similar. Consequently the processes work well together when a child is highly motivated and committed to success in both fields. Experienced coaches and school teachers understand and can help a determined child achieve success in both areas at the same time.

Tim Randall’s Sports Round-up Football Havant & Waterlooville FC Hawks Manager Lee Bradbury has shuffled the pack after the disappointment of missing out on the play-offs at the end of last season. Out go Scott Bevan, Nigel Atangana, Jake Newton, Sahr Kabbi, Christian Nanette, and Dennis Oli. In come Ryan Young (goalkeeper), Josh Huggins (full back), Harry Medway (leftback/central defender), Brian Dutton (midfield) and forwards Bradley Bubb, JJ Hooper and Shamir Mullings. Bradbury has looked to strengthen an already impressive defence and pose a greater threat in attack in a bid for promotion to the Conference Premier League. Portsmouth Footbal Club The Division Two side has signed two of Hawks players from last seasons team. Talented French midfielder Nigel Atangana has already impressed in Pompey’s pre season fixtures and can be expected to prove a shrewd signing for the Blues in the coming campaign. Also now with Pompey is goalkeeper Scott Bevan. Manager Andy Awford has appointed Bevan as their new goalkeeping coach.

Tennis Following Andy Murray ‘s sudden exit from Wimbledon amid speculation that he had made a serious error in appointing Amelie Mauresmo to his coaching team, I can confirm that Amelie has been in Miami at Andy’s training camp and has fully integrated into Andy’s coaching team as predicted in this column immediately prior to Wimbledon. Andy has been working hard with Amelie and the rest of the team on improvements to his game and in preparation for the American hard court season which culminates in the American Open, the final 2014 Grand Slam event. Rugby Pre-season training has started at Havant RFC. The senior squad has been in the gym for conditioning sessions and onto the pitch to work on skills, team organisation and match fitness. The first few sessions have been very positive with the squad pushing themselves hard. With 3 men’s sides this coming season the pressure is on the players to put in the work to get on the first XV team sheet for the opening league game on September 6th. There are a number of gaps in the first XV team list on the Club’s website leading to speculation

Tim Randall Reports about new arrivals for the campaign ahead. Their opening league game at home to Chobham on September 6th. Ladies Rugby England Women are in France attempting to win the Ladies Rugby World Cup Final for the first time since 1994. Although they reached the finals in 2002, 2006 and 2010, they met New Zealand on each occasion and lost. The draw for this year’s World Cup in France means that they are expected to meet New Zealand again in the final. England Ladies star player Maggie Alphonsi told the BBC recently that she is very confident that the England team is determined not to suffer the pain of defeat in the finals in France and they are ready in this tournament to win the World Cup for a second time. England’s chances of winning the World Cup may have increased as Ireland Women have beaten New Zealand in the

preliminary round and may not qualify for the next stage. England meanwhile had comfortable wins over Samoa and Spain. World Cup Football Speaking recently, after carrying the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton on its way to Glasgow, Bryan Robson, the former England captain said that you need world class players to compete in major international competitions and that England has not got nearly enough in the present squad. There is a crop of young players doing well in the Premier League, some of whom played in the World Cup Final in Brazil. Producing promising young English players with the necessary technical skills rests with those Football League and Premier League Clubs with Academies that are capable of developing talented English youngsters with the necessary determination and work ethic to succeed at the highest level.

Hawks Prepare for Take Off for the 2014 – 15 Season After just losing out on the play-offs last season (on goal difference) Hawks Manager Lee Bradbury has acted quickly to fine-tune his squad for the new season. The defence was watertight last season and the only change has been at right-back. Jake Newton has left the club and been replaced by Josh Huggins. Josh is an exciting attacking full-back. He notched up a number of goals for his Club last season and has looked very impressive in preseason. Last years player of the season Nigel Atangana has moved into the professional game with Portsmouth FC (undisclosed fee), where he has already impressed Pompey boss Andy Awford. Replacing the talented Frenchman will be difficult, but

Bradbury has moved fast to find a different type of midfield player. Brian Dutton is a tall imposing ‘midfield general’ who is strong both in the air and on the ground. The Hawks midfield has players with pace and good technical ability and together with club favourite Perry Ryan, Dutton will add bite in the middle of the park. Very occasionally a club like Hawks gets the opportunity to sign real proven talent and new Hawks goalkeeper Ryan Young fits into that catagory. Ryan played 367 matches for AFC Telford in the Conference North and was ever present in their Championship winning side last season. He and his family have re-located to his native Isle of Wight and Lee Bradbury pulled off a major coup in signing him. He will be

assisted by teenage protégé Charlie Searle (18) who gained experience from five first team appearances last season. The major change to the Hawks is the strike force. Two of last seasons fans favourites have been transferred to National Conference Clubs - Sahr Kabba (Lincoln City) and Christian Nanetti (Dover Athletic) while Dennis Oli has moved to Conference South new boys Hemel Hempstead. Once more Lee Bradbury’s scouting network has worked overtime and to secure a couple of potential stars in Bradley Bubb and JJ Hooper. Bradley, is a proven talent at this level with a superb CV in fulltime football. He is a well built powerful striker, quick and very determined. JJ Hooper (20 years old) is a more speculative

purchase. He spent his formative years at Premiership side Newcastle United’s Academy. He then joined Northampton Town in Division Two but only played a handful of matches. Last season he played ten games on loan in the Conference South, scoring an impressive six goals. Finding a third striker has proved problematic. Hawks scouts scoured the Europe market for suitable players. A couple of players appeared in pre-season but fell short of the required ability. In Hawks pre-season match against a strong Crystal Palace side (0 – 0) however, trialist Shamir Mullings created a good impression and has now signed for the club. Shamir played previously for Southend FC, Thamesmead (loan) and Bromley

Sailing -Team 3,2,1 Olympic Campaign News in from Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre is that their fundraising evening at Hayling Island Sailing Club in April raised an amazing £17,000. The girls said “This year we need to raise £33,000 on top of the money that we receive from UK Sport and the National Lottery UK, to cover all of our basic travel and equipment costs. Gregory runner-up as new breed shine at English Amateur Golf Championship By: Laurence Warren-West

This 2014 English amateur golf championship was staged at Saunton Golf Club, at Braunton in Devon, from 28 July to 2 August, and was contested by 288 of the country’s finest amateur golfers. The tournament marked a great week for the 19 year old trio of local golfers Scott Gregory, Corhampton Golf Club, Billy McKenzie, Rowlands Castle GC, both former South Downs College students and former classmates and Jamie Mist, Hayling Island GC. Gregory and Mist are currently studying at University in America. The format of the championship was a 36 hole qualifier with the top 64 players progressing to the knockout match play stage. Out of the local talent on display it was McKenzie who led the way in the stoke play, with an opening round of 71 on the tougher of the two courses leaving him in an overall tie for 8th. Gregory (74) and Mist (75) did not find it quite so easy but remained in contention. After the second qualifying round it was still McKenzie that was the star man with a +1 total after a second round 73 leaving him in an overall tie for 17th, ahead of Gregory and Mist who were +3 and +4 respectively after both shooting second rounds of 71, qualifying all three for the knockout stage. All three players progressed through the round of 64, reaching the final 32. This However was the end of the competition

for McKenzie as he lost on the last hole of his match whereas Gregory and Mist progressed to the last 16. Their campaigns did not end there either, with Gregory’s match going the entire distance for the third time in a row, this time winning on the second play-off hole. Similarly to his two previous matches Mist was able to get the job done before the final hole with a 3&1 win over Goodwood’s Toby Tree. This would be Mist’s final win before losing on the last hole in his quarter final match. For Gregory the winning run continued in similar fashion to before with yet another match going the entire distance with the same winning result. By that point he had played more golf than anybody else in the competition. The semi-final seemed as good a time as any for Gregory to win a match early with a convincing 3&2 win over Jack Cardy from Ipswich Golf Club. The win set up a final against Huddersfield’s Nick Marsh who had qualified for the knockout stage in second place. The final was contested over 36 holes and was closely fought with both players leading at various points but it was ultimately decided on the 35th hole with Gregory unfortunately losing 2&1. The three local players were able to draw many positives from the week as they all achieved above expectations and will now look to build on their performances in the closing stage of the season.

one shot back from the lead, with an opening round of 67. McKenzie and Sawford did not fare so well however and both shot 74. The afternoon qualifying round was a different tale for both McKenzie and Robson with McKenzie shooting 68 to bring him back to level par but Robson only managing a 71, leaving him on four under par, narrowly missing out on first place via count-back. Sawford unfortunately was not able to emulate the golf of McKenzie and thus failed to finish inside the top 16 and progress to the knock-out stage. The last 16 produced a matchup between two friends; Mckenzie and Hayling Island’s Ben Wall. Mckenzie came out on top, birdying six of the last nine holes to come back from behind. On the other hand Robson was not so fortunate, losing on the third extra hole after coming back from behind to force a stalemate against The Armys’s Hayden Reay. McKenzie’s championship came to a halt in the quarter finals with a narrow loss to number one seed and eventual champion Martin Young of Brockenhurst Golf, claiming his second title in four years.

Havant Hockey Club Plans Bounce Back to National League Hockey Following the relegation of Havant’s Hockey Club’s 1st XI men’s team from the English Hockey League at the end of last season after 26 years in the League, the Club’s has had a major shake up of its Men’s and Ladies 1st XI’s. Men’s 1st XI Merijin Van Willigen, the Men's1st XI coach for the past 5 years has resigned to take up the position as coach to Reading Hockey Club’s Ladies team. Willigen’s position at Havant has been filled by 2nd XI Coach, Ady Adams. Adams joined HHC a few seasons ago and worked successfully with the Men's 2nd XI as well as supporting Willigen with the 1st XI. Adams 2nd XI won last seasons Surrey Division 1 Championship and the Hampshire Cup and he was also voted HHC's coach of the 2013/14 season. It was therefore no surprise that Adams was given the vacant position of Men's 1st XI coach. Speaking to Adams about his plans for restoring the Club to the EHL, he told me “I want to put the smile back on the faces of our players. Last season we didn’t score enough goals and had to try to stop other teams playing. This season I want us to play it our way in our style with assertive hockey and more goals, particularly from short corners. We are looking to strengthen the team and Club President Chris Pickett is working very hard to bring in the players we need. A goal scorer is a priority and hopefully we will make a significant signing within the next ten 10 days. Others teams in our league are equally keen to regain a place in the EHL and are strengthening their own teams. Recently Old Georgonians have signed England International James Tindall from Surbiton HC. This is the calibre of player we would like to have at this Club” Ladies 1st XI The Club has also announced changes to key positions on and off the pitch in Ladies Section. Last season Havant Ladies 1st XI achieved a very creditable 6th place in League South Division 1 and the majority of the players have stayed at the club for the coming season. The team has a new manager, Richard Cook, and a new experienced coach, Mark Robinson. Mark said “I am delighted to join a club as prestigious as Havant and look forward to carrying on the progress achieved last season. I am pleased that we have retained the majority of the squad, itself an excellent mix of youth and experience, and look forward to the challenges ahead. Pre-season is just around the corner, and with a challenging set of fixtures already confirmed it is now down to the entire group to put itself in the best possible position before our first league game against Woking on the
