Our not-for-profit policy of attracting Corporate Support from major employers together with advertising sales revenue, has provided funds for Community Projects in the postcode districts which we serve. Funding has started rolling-out to organisations for their community projects. To date these include: • Equipment for The Squirrels breakfast club for preschool children; • Books for the pre-school children reading project initiated by Hampshire County Council; • Lighting for The Bridge Centre on Hayling Island.

NEW VISION FOR EMSWORTH CENTRE Community First HEH is seeking your views on how we can improve the Emsworth Centre in South St, Emsworth We are running a first stage of consultation which includes an open event on 17th December between 4pm and 8pm and a short questionnaire for people to share their views. This is available on line at www.cfheh.org.uk or can be picked up at various venues in and around Emsworth. The consultation will run until 10th January but we will continue to collect ideas and suggestions on an on-going basis. Residents and visitors are welcome to pop into the Emsworth Centre any time we’re open and share your views and ideas with us. The centre, run by Community First has been a valuable part of the community for many years providing a base for meals on wheels and a friendly home for lunch club and many clubs and activities. More recently we’ve been hiring it out at weekends to provide a local market. The time has come to have a good look at our services and rethink how we can make the best use of the building for the

benefit of everyone and develop new and exciting services for the current and future generations. We want everyone to benefit from new services and need your help and views about our plans, to make sure it is what you want to see in your town. NEW SOCIAL CLUB AT HAVANT GARDEN CENTRE Havant Garden Centre has become host to the latest Brendoncare club giving those with green fingers the chance to meet up and socialise surrounded by plants, peat and pergolas. The Brendoncare club meets every Thursday from 10.30 to 12.30 at Havant Garden Centre in Bartons Road, and gives older people in the local community the opportunity to meet up with others and enjoy a drink and a chat. Brendoncare’s Head of Clubs, Edwin Ingleton said: “Our clubs have proved very popular across the South and we have a range of different types of club to give people choice. We are delighted that Havant Garden Centre has provided us with this fabulous venue and we are also excited about the prospect of having a ‘Brendoncare Club Allotment’ as well as monthly talks from the Garden Centre.” Also running in the Havant area is the ‘Silent World and Friends Club’ which meets at Bedhampton Social Hall every other Wednesday between 2 and 4 pm. The club provides an opportunity for people who are hard of hearing and is open to anyone wanting to make new friends and enjoy a variety of activities. For more information on

Postcode Publications February 17 is D-Day for D-Day!

A near six-figure sum, which could bring jobs and visitors to the Borough, has been applied for by the Emsworth-based arts organisation WemsFest. If successful the funding from Heritage Lottery will enable a number of projects to take place which will highlight the relatively unknown but major contributions which communities in the Borough made towards the success of the D-Day invasion. Artistic Director Mark Ringwood points out that months of voluntary work has gone into developing a number of projects under the 'D-Day Emsworth & Havant' umbrella which are both historical and intergenerational. Heritage Lottery funding is designed to preserve our history for the enjoyment of current and future generations. "One of our projects is for secondary school students to engage with those who were alive at the time and capture their memories on a specially made DVD which will be made publicly available. Very few people now living in the Borough are aware of the activity which went on in 1944. The mock invasions, landing craft, and Mulberry harbour constructions on Hayling Island, the miles of camouflage netting made in Emsworth mills, and the thousands of

overseas troops camped and billeted in the Borough all made a massive impact on the residents of that time. A specially commissioned play, written by local playwrights Julian Sluggett and Lucy Flannery looks at how the invasion plans affected 3 very different Emsworth families is scheduled for six performances. Thanks to a small grant already received from Hampshire County Council the Borough's libraries are the scene for 'Memories are Made of This' which will be collages compiled by copies of residents artefacts from 1944, along with creative writing pieces, and turned into six separate exhibitions. Emsworth Community Centre will also host an exhibition of memorabilia and the town centre will be dressed to resemble life as it was in 1944. An ancillary programme of concerts and talks has also been prepared over a two week period which encompasses D-Day on Friday 6 June and is expected to attract thousands of visitors from the UK and overseas." The funding bid is evaluated on 17 February and a decision will be known shortly afterwards.

PEPPA PIG Says ‘HURRAH FOR READING!’ Helping Under 5s Read Regularly At Home

Would your child like to meet Peppa Pig? This Spring, Hampshire County Council’s Services for Young Children, in conjunction with Action for Children Children’s Centres and your local library, are working together to develop an exciting, reading project called HURRAH (Helping Under 5s Read Regularly At Home). So, why not join in, get the chance to meet Peppa Pig and help your child’s enjoy reading by developing a love of books? The project will be launched on Thursday 24 April at 10:00 a.m. at Mill Hill Children’s Centre and 1:00 pm at Sharps Copse Children’s Centre.

Come along to this free stories and rhymes session and find out more! If you can’t make either of these sessions, then simply contact your local Action for Children Children’s Centre or Library. Every child who joins in will be

issued with a special ‘HURRAH’ reading passport. Every time you borrow and share a book with your child, your child will receive a stamp in their reading passport. If you get your reading passport stamped six times, you will be invited to join us for a celebration at Waterlooville Library where you will receive a certificate and also meet Peppa Pig. So, come along, choose a book to share with your child, go home, turn off the television, snuggle up and enjoy the story together! There are so many benefits to reading with your young children: • Sharing picture and storybooks with babies and young children gives them an excellent start on the journey to being able to read • It helps them learn new words and form sentences • Sharing a story at bedtime is a chance for you and your child to relax and enjoy a special moment together

It helps them learn which way up a book is held and the direction to turn the pages • It helps them build listening skills and increases their attention span • Hearing and reading lots of stories helps children write their own stories when they are old enough. • And best of all, it’s fun and never too early to start! Reading is really important and it’s never too early to start! A first step is to share books and enjoy stories with your children when they are young. This can involve the whole family including dads and grandparents. By laying the foundations of sharing books and reading early, you will give your child a head start at school and help spark a life long love of reading and learning. Postcode Publications have generously provided funding to support this project and the reading development of the young children in our community.

Havant Cemeteries Project the plants to enhance the areas around the Holocaust Memorial. Other funders of the project are Asda, Waitrose and the Bedhampton Charitable Trust; along with Havant Borough Council as project partners. Since the project began in June 2012, many volunteers have been collecting information about the wildlife, and researching into the history of the cemeteries, such as who was buried there and why. Volunteers have also taken photographs, written poems and created water colour paintings. All of this work and information has been put together to form this exhibition. Please follow the story, history, poems and paintings created by this dedicated group to find out more about the project and the cemeteries themselves, starting from the right hand wall. From August 2014 this project will continue solely by volunteers who will look after the wildlife and biodiversity at New Lane and Dissenters’ cemeteries.

Havant Cemeteries Project – Until Friday 28th February at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre This exhibition displays the work of a group of volunteers who have worked towards enhancing the wildlife and appearances of Cemeteries in Havant. It all started with a group of residents, local to Havant Cemetery, who were interested in enhancing the cemetery for wildlife and visitors. They approached Havant Borough Council with their idea, who then asked The Conservation Volunteers to become involved. As a result, the idea of a 2 year project to involve volunteers in discovering and enhancing the natural and social history at New Lane, Dissenters and Warblington cemeteries was created. With funding from the National Lottery through The Heritage Lottery Fund the Conservation Volunteers have been able to set up the project, recruit & train volunteers and to purchase items such as

GRANTS TO VOLUNTARY GROUPS Community First HEH in partnership with Havant Borough Council’s Community Team has secured a grant to fund small local groups. Grants up to £500 will be awarded to voluntary groups, as voted for by local residents. Residents are invited to attend four Market Place events that will take place across the Borough. At the events members of the public will be given the opportunity to meet the local groups before making their vote. The events will be held at: Emsworth Community Centre on Wednesday 5th March 4pm-6pm Hayling Island United Reformed Church Wednesday 12th March 4pm-6pm Leigh Park Community Centre Monday 17th March 3pm-5pm Springwood Community Centre Thursday 20th March 3pm-5pm The application process is now open and will run until Friday 21st February 2014. Forms and help with applications are available from Community First HEH. A total of £21,000 is available and has been secured by Community First HEH and Havant Borough Council’s Community Team from Hampshire County Council’s ‘Have your Say’ fund. Visitors to Chichester Harbour this year, whether by land or water, will find themselves presented with improved information. New ‘visitor information panels’ are being put up at key launch sites around the harbour. As well as a useful harbour map, the panels feature key regulations people should be aware of before going afloat. In addition those visiting by land are reminded how to look after the footpaths and wildlife. QR and NFC links give quick access to a mobile version of the Conservancy website. Siún Cranny, Director of Chichester Harbour Conservancy

said, ‘these bright panels are replacing our rather dowdy old byelaws boards. The panels will present key reminders to sailors and a website link will access to the byelaws, tide tables and Local Notices to Mariners. We hope the panels will help us to communicate with many more visitors and harbour users – and that information is easily available for everyone.’ Pieter Montyn, Chairman of the Conservancy added, ‘As we celebrate 50 years of being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, these new visitor information panels will explain how to enjoy the area and protect it – we need everyone to understand and help’. The first set of panels has gone up at West Wittering, Itchenor and Dell Quay. A further 20 will be installed during 2014. The panels have been generously supported by The Friends of Chichester Harbour.

He soon received lots of requests for his coaching and by the end of summer 2009 decided to become a full-time Sailing Instructor. He is now about to start his 5th season in April. Melvyn’s teaches people new to the sport to sail their own boats and gives them the confidence to sail, whatever the strength of wind or weather conditions, and to enjoy sailing in Chichester Harbour. Melvyn told me “My home town was Derby so I learnt to sail the hard way, on a small inland gravel pit, racing little boats, which is probably why I enjoy teaching and coaching other people. I took to sailing instantly. From day one sailing has been in my blood. It’s a sport which can really captivate people and I always wanted to live and work by the sea, so over the

years I got ever closer and now live in Emsworth. Melvyn now a fully qualified Royal Yachting Association Senior Sailing Instructor and Racing Coach offers his services to members of any of the Sailing Clubs within Chichester Harbour. The Mumpreneur’s Networking Club hosed a business networking event for entrepreneurial women as guests of Caroline Lucas at the Houses of Parliament. 70 attendees from across the country took part in this amazing event as part of the Clubs 10,000 visits celebrations! The networkers were a mixture of Sussex members, Caroline’s constituents and those who had travelled from farther afield. HEALTH & WELL-BEING Give Your Heart a Valentine's Gift Perhaps it is a coincidence that the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has declared February as “National Heart Month”. Everyone is familiar with the term “heart attack” but many do not recognise the symptoms and delay taking action. This delay may result in death or avoidable damage to the heart. As a pharmacist I sometimes encounter an individual who has recently had or is going to have a heart attack. They usually present with what they convince themselves is indigestion or they have sent a worried spouse to the pharmacy to tell me about “a pain that goes down the arm”. A heart attack can show symptoms from the incapacitating (“a metal band tightening around the chest”) to discomfort, similar to indigestion. Other symptoms include dizziness and nausea. Usually the symptoms will be made worse by exercise such as walking up stairs. I find it hard to understand why people are so reluctant to act when their life is at risk.

Oddly men seem to be the major culprits and you have to pity their poor wives (widows?) If you suspect you or someone else is having a heart attack call an ambulance immediately. Early treatment not only saves lives but also means that more heart muscle can be saved. Any damage to heart muscle is irreversible and is caused by a lack of oxygen supply. People often ask if they should take Aspirin at the time of the attack for its action in preventing blood clots. This does have a beneficial effect but only take them if they are near to hand – don't go wandering around the house looking for them as this can cause an extra strain on the heart. If you have a companion let them look but they must not leave you for any length of time. If you want to lessen your chances of having a heart attack 1. Stop smoking 2. Maintain a healthy weight

3. Engage in at least moderate exercise on a weekly basis 4. Reduce your alcohol consumption if you drink more than the recommended safe limits. (21 units per week for men and 14 units for women) 5. Follow a healthy diet 6. Have your blood pressure regularly checked

Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF), based on Hayling Island, has joined other leading medical research charities across the UK to support a new campaign to raise awareness to the importance of sharing data from medical records with medical researchers. The campaign coincides with a leaflet drop by NHS England to all 22 million households in England to explain the changes to how data from health records is collected from GP surgeries; these patient records held by the NHS are an invaluable resource for scientists. With careful controls to protect individuals’ privacy, by removing any personal contact details, researchers are able to use the information from the records to make discoveries that improve the prevention and treatment of disease. Dr Eleanor Kennedy Research Manager at DRWF explained: “This is a powerful new initiative that showcases the uniqueness of the NHS. Access to patient data like this could accelerate new

medicines and treatments getting to market and this, in turn, could have an enormous and lasting impact on the health of the nation.“ DRWF is a major global force in diabetes research; the foundation has funded more than £8.4m of vital diabetes research since it was established in the UK. The charity is currently funding 24 researchers across the country, the DRWF Islet Isolation Facility at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology & Metabolism (OCDEM) at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford as well as contributing to a number of collaborative international funding initiatives.” “Currently, the NHS is writing to everyone in England to ensure they're happy for their information to be used in this way and giving them the option to opt out. Tai Chi Chuan – more than just a sequence What is it? How is it practiced? What is it for? Essentially, Tai Chi is an ancient philosophy or art broadly based on natural forces of Yin and Yang. The “Chuan” meaning “to transmit”. So, in essence, Tai Chi Chuan is the physical act of learning about Tai Chi. Tai Chi has come to be known as people moving in slow sequences, often in parks. These sequences are usually called “The Form” or “Forms”. This is really where the story begins; the movements and sequences only tell a small part of what could be happening. There are many aspects often missed when simply copying these often pleasing sequences. Aspects of practice: Form,

There are exercises to loosen and free the tension from the body, breathing and focused routines to enable releasing of inner stresses, partner-work to show resistance within, changing reflexes and methods of increasing concentration enhancing self-awareness. The Forms are mainly to aid the understanding of the aspects mentioned above rather than an end in themselves. Emma Bailey - pictured right - from Leigh Park is chosen to spread the word about type one diabetes in Parliament Emma Bailey, aged 10 from Leigh Park has been selected by a global charity to speak about life with type one diabetes at a major House of Commons event this spring. JDRF, the type one diabetes charity, has chosen Emma, who attends Bosmere Junior School, to attend Type 1 Parliament, which takes place on 11 March, 2014 and is kindly supported by Platinum sponsors Lilly. She will be one of sixty children and adults who live with the condition and have been selected from across the country to represent their constituencies. Type one diabetes is a chronic and challenging condition. The exact cause is unknown, but it is not linked to lifestyle or diet. A child diagnosed with it at the age of five faces up to 19,000 insulin injections and 50,000 finger prick tests by the time they are 18. The condition affects 400,000 people in the UK – equivalent to more than 600 people in every constituency – and incidence is growing rapidly, particularly in those under five years old. Helen Bailey is Emma’s mum. She said: ‘Emma’s diagnosis when she was 3 years old was a very difficult time for the family. It means they can’t always be carefree like other children can.” But Helen Bailey added: “It was very

exciting to hear that Emma had been chosen to represent all those in our area living with the condition at Type 1 Parliament. Going to the House of Commons and talking to MPs will be a wonderful experience for them.” Karen Addington, Chief Executive of JDRF, said: “Type one diabetes doesn’t have to hold you back in life. But it is a very challenging condition to live with. The Government must respond to increasing rates of type one diabetes in the UK by investing more in research to treat, prevent and cure the condition.That’s why we’re taking our message to Westminster in March.”

Food and Wine Wine of the Month Languedoc Roussillon – The latest ‘New World’? Jonathan Rogers of The Solent Wine Experience looks at this amazing region.

The wines of the Languedoc Roussillon region in the south of France have become some of the most exciting wines to be produced for some time. I say ‘become’, but in reality they have been around for a good few years now but they seem to get better and better. Forty years ago this region was producing huge amounts of mediocre wine with no real potential and certainly no major export markets. The French government had had enough by the late 70’s and began to throw subsidies to the growers to encourage them to plant new grape varieties, reduce yields and generally start producing better wines. They introduced their ‘Vins de Pays’ scheme which helped winemakers who were intent on upping their game in terms of producing quality wines, although there were still quite a few producers who had no intention of changing their ways. Those who did, created a new generation of winemakers and in turn produced a new generation of quality wines. The early 90’s began to see an influx of Australian winemakers moving to the region realising its potential. This was at a time when Australia was a major success in its branding, exports and off course, its wine. One major player in Australia moved to create a brand typical of the region. Hardy’s purchased Domaine de la Baume in 1990 and this certainly encouraged local producers to take note in their region and to start producing wines the world would take note of. Hardy’s have since sold the Domaine but local producers continue to create a leading force in the ‘brand’ Languedoc Roussillon. Majestic Wine have recently opened in Havant and have a good varied selection of wines from this region. Here are three to get you started.

A healthy start to the new year with Vegetable Biryani We all start the New Year with good intentions and I am going to help in that quest with my first recipe for 2014. I also decided that as a family we would try to eat a couple of ‘vegetarian’ meals a week. These tend to be lower in fat and higher in fibre and less calorific. Not only that, they are also cheaper because vegetables, beans, pulses and nuts do not cost as much as meat and have many more nutritional and health benefits. I hope you will enjoy this wholesome and tasty family meal. Ingredients 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 small cauliflower, broken into small florets 1 medium size Butternut Squash 1 large onion, sliced 1litre hot vegetable stock 3 tbsp Biryani powder mixed to a paste with water to make curry paste Large pinch of saffron strands 2 tsp mustard seeds (black or white) 500g Basmati rice soaked in boiling water 140g trimmed green beans, halved 2 lemons, juice only a handful of fresh coriander leaves 50g packet roasted cashew nuts Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 220C/gas 7/fan 200C. Pour the oil into a large roasting tin or large casserole dish in the oven for a couple of minutes to heat through. 2. Pour boiling water on Basmati until just covered and leave to soak. 3. Prepare vegetables and add all the vegetables to the tin, except the beans and onions, stirring to coat them in the hot oil: Season with salt and pepper and return to the oven for 15 minutes until beginning to brown. 4. Stir together the stock and saffron. 5. Fry onions in small amount of oil until golden brown and add mustard seeds and fry until they start popping. Add the Curry paste and finally add the stock, stir well to mix. 6. Mix the rice and green beans with the vegetables in the tin, then pour over the stock mixture. Lower the oven to 190C/gas 5/fan 190C. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed. 7. Toast the cashew nuts in a frying pan until golden brown. 8. Stir in the lemon juice and check the seasoning, then scatter over the coriander and cashew nuts. Enjoy. Volunteers work hard in Havant cemeteries

Portsmouth Hispanic Society

Despite the winter weather volunteers have been hard at work in New Lane, Dissenters and Warblington cemeteries helping to conserve them for the benefit of wildlife and people. During our December conservation session 9 volunteers cleared brambles before they engulfed headstones in Dissenters cemetery, cleared ivy, cut back elder and planted a box hedge around the holocaust memorial in New Lane cemetery. There is a fine balance between preventing plants such as bramble and ivy from swamping the cemetery and providing shelter and food for wildlife. We always work with this in mind and ensure that we do leave patches for wildlife. During our January conservation session 7 volunteers braved heavy showers and hail to care for a young hedge row and young trees. The hedge row and trees have been planted in the natural burial ground at Warblington cemetery and will provide valuable habitat for wildlife whilst making the area a pleasant place for people to visit. Whilst the plants are young they are

Last year, we participated in a 2 day antismoking workshop. We worked with 2 ladies from the smoke free Hampshire and Isle of Wight organisation studying the facts and effects of smoking. While we were there we looked in depth at the ingredients that cause many deaths each year. We also learnt how to help people resist the temptation which we took on board to continue to raise awareness in our school. The 20 influential pupils who participated were elected by their own peers after filling out a survey. Once we had completed the course we ran assemblies to raise awareness throughout the school. Rowlands Castle Painting Society Rowlands Castle Painting Society are holding their annual Art Exhibition and Sale on the 15th and 16th March 2014. The Society always puts on a very good show of work and is indeed a treat for everyone to come along and enjoy seeing original works of art that cover a wide range of subjects including local scenes from around the area. The paintings are for sale and are very reasonably priced considering the work and time put in. There will be an opportunity to meet with some of the artists, who are more than happy to answer any questions. The exhibition takes place in the Parish Hall, Links Lane ,Rowlands Castle. It can be viewed on both days from 10am - 4pm. There is also a tombola and a chance for visitors to vote for their favourite painting. Ayckbourn at the Station Theatre The ingenious comic thriller ‘Communicating Doors’ by Alan Ayckbourn premièred in 1994, is playing from 22nd to 29th March. MERIDIAN SUPPORTS RAINBOW The Meridian Centre was happy to support and help raise funds for the Rainbow centre located in Fareham. Our team all acknowledge the hard work that the Rainbow team do to inspire and support patients and their families with Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, MS and Parkinson’s disease through a system of learning called Conductive Education. Money was raised mainly through donations when visiting Santa Claus at our Christmas grotto, and the numerous regular players of the Street Piano located in the Meridian central mall. Centre Manager Rob Fryer said “it was good to give something back to our local community at Christmas time. All donations from visitors to Santa’s Grotto were passed on to the Rainbow Centre. I would like to say a big personal thank you to all our customers who visited the grotto over Christmas, and hope they enjoy the long lasting happy memory from the photo they received on the day. Our team here at the Meridian Centre will continue to support this worthwhile charity throughout 2014.

The lucky Year 5 pupils at Mill Rythe Junior School have experienced another amazing Tudor Day. The whole year group went back over five hundred years into the Tudor era and dressed up in wonderful costumes to really get into character. The children took part in a variety of Tudor activities and later on performed to their parents to show their work and fabulous Tudor dancing. One of the highlights of the day was a Tudor banquet with different types of food and drink. “I really liked the Tudor banquet because I got to try new foods,’ commented Sophie Vinell, a Year 5 pupil. The School hall was an excellent venue for such a fantastic event, it was decorated with Tudor shields that the children had designed and made themselves. A favourite part of the day for many children was showing off their work to their parents, and entertaining them with songs and dances. Leigh Park Cops’n’Coffee overjoyed with her win! Charlie Darwin aged 17 from Leigh Park is the proud winner of a brand new bike thanks to Leigh Park Police and Big World Impact. Big World Impact are working closely with the Leigh Park Police team who are soon to work with local communities in the area to deliver an enriched programme for young people, aged primarily between 9 and 19 years old. The programme will consist of sport/outdoor activities and arts/cultural events and will aid the personal and social development of these young people.

Charlie met with Lloyd Shepherd from Big World Impact at the opening of the Cops’n’Coffee shop in the Greywell Shopping centre. Lloyd said “We are very happy with the amount of people who attended Cops & Coffee, a great success and a special well done to Charlie on winning the bike, just by filling in a simple questionnaire on what she would like to see in Leigh Park for young people. We look forward to meeting with other young people and working together with them soon”.

Charlie won the bike after her questionnaire was entered in to a draw which she won as well as a gift card donated by ASDA for her to buy accessories for the bike. Havant Academy News Havant Academy Students on the UP! Students, staff and parents at Havant Academy deserve huge congratulations as a result of the recent publication of GCSE performance tables. These GCSE tables show how Havant Academy is the most improved school in the area: • Havant Academy’s GCSE results saw a 13% increase in 5 A*-C including English and Maths, which has outperformed all local secondary schools in the area; • The Government has introduced a new measure for schools and this is the Value Added best 8 qualifications including English and Maths. When taking this into account; • Havant Academy is the second highest performing school in the Havant, Portsmouth and Gosport areas;

• 100% of high attaining students who attend Havant Academy achieved 5 A*-C including English and Maths, resulting us in being in joint first place; • Students who joined Havant Academy in Yr7 that were low attaining, gained 5 A*-C including English and Maths, placing Havant Academy in joint second position; • Earlier this term, the Department of Education visited Havant Academy. EBP Ultimate Challenge Winners 2013 – Havant Academy Earlier this year, five students from Havant Academy took part in the prestigious IBM/EBP website challenge. It was the first time Havant Academy had entered the competition, but it did not faze them as their hard work and dedication saw them excel with their project winning the challenge!

Three of the team accepted the award on behalf of the website challenge team. The evening was a great success and the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They are currently getting prepared to defend their title in the IBM Website challenge 2014.

Harry Potter week – December 2013 In the build-up to Christmas, Havant Academy’s Year 7s enjoyed a magical Harry Potter week. The Year 7 students explored potions and wand-making as part of the Harry Potter theme, with each student put into one of the four Hogwarts houses as they collected house points over the week. The week was a cross-curricular success, with students and teachers embracing the competitive spirit with enthusiasm and outstanding teamwork. The week ended with an exciting trip to the Harry Potter Studios.

EBP later informed the Academy that the team, consisting of; Owain Cotter, Jade Davis, Tiegan Powell, Amy Redsull, and Blake Squire, had also won the Ultimate Challenge winners’ trophy 2013. The EBP praised the exceptional project and website produced by the Havant Academy team.

The final event of the week was an awards evening, where house cups, medals were sponsored by local business.

To accept the award, the victorious students, staff and family members attended the black-tie awards dinner held at the Marriott Hotel. Owain Cotter, Jade Davis and Amy Redsull receive the EBP award on behalf of the victorious Havant Academy team.

In addition, we also program our regular Havant Comedy Club which is compered by award-winning compere Joe Wells. Joe is the recent Portsmouth News Guide Awards Best Comedy Winner 2013. Alex Horne is here with ‘Lies’. He describes himself as a comedian, writer, gambler, birdwatcher, potential neologist and father. Alex appears on Thursday 27 February at 8pm. Mitch Benn is the comedy musical satirist from BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’. Interestingly this show is entitled: ‘Mitch Benn is the 37th Beatle’. Mitch has a lifelong obsession with Liverpool’s most famous sons. Mitch is here on Friday 11 April at 8pm. And then of course we have booked the legend that is Lee Nelson. Pat and Bob - Winners of the Summer Painting Competition Rowlands castle painting society ended the year 2013 with a Christmas party organised by one of our members Sally Williams and her team of helpers which included Pat and Ian Hoper, John Richards and Elizabeth Taylor. There was a holiday painting competition which was jointly won by Bob Payne and Pat Hoper, a card competition won by Gary Miller and a new competition which was a photo of one of the many painting outings won by Maureen Aldous. This popular painting society now looks forward to the 2014 programme where there is so much to offer with professional artists visiting to give demonstrations, life groups and workshops, we also go out to different locations painting and sketching through the summer.

Hayling Billy Heritage Project Green to go! A partnership comprising local volunteers, Havant Borough Council and Hampshire County Council have secured a £88,900 Heritage Lottery Fund grant to deliver the Hayling Billy Heritage Project. The project will convey the heritage of the Hayling Billy railway on the Island. The project will enable improvements and conservation work to take place along the route and provide exciting learning and volunteering opportunities for local people. Participants will have the chance to develop skills and volunteer time through the establishment of a ‘Friends of the Billy Line’ group who will be supported to undertake volunteer roles and work in partnership with the conservation volunteers on neighbouring sites. To help guide people around the site and allow them explore the heritage of the railway information board, trail leaflets, digital material via a new website, including

photos, historical information, will help create a engaging and interesting place to go for visitors. Councillor Yvonne Weeks said “The benefits for the local community will be a heritage project for generations to come, a focus for community volunteers to work on together to create a lasting legacy for local people and visitors. Local Boy meets Middlesbrough Hero’s By: Joshua Lucas

Fourteen-year-old Callum Lucas from Havant has had his wish of meeting the Middlesbrough FC squad granted by the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Callum who suffers from a rare gastrointestinal disease called eosinophilic entrocolitis (EGID), has been ill from birth and has spent his life in and out of hospital for upsetting and painful treatments. Despite this he has soldiered though in the attempt to live a normal life. A life long Boro fan, Callum remembers

first being taken to a game at the age of six by his father, a serving solider. Unfortunately it was not a ‘dream’ start for Callum as they narrowly lost to Wigan Athletic 3-2. However this defeat didn’t put him off and he followed in his father’s footsteps of supporting his home-town club. Callum’s mother, Michelle got in touch with the Starlight Children’s Foundation who then acted quickly in contacting the North East football club and getting it set up.

Callum, along with his parents Michelle and Steven, elder brother Joshua, aged 16 and younger sister Alexandra-Grace, aged 12 were invited up to Middlesbrough’s training facility at Rockliffe Park where Callum and his family were greeted by the clubs press officer Graham Bell, who took them down to where the players were training, this surprised Callum as to start off with the players were playing handball before splitting up into smaller groups to as they practised passing, defending and their first touches, Callum also got himself involved by passing the ball back to one of the players during training. After the players had finished training they made their way over to Callum and his family to greet them. After they had met the players, 7 of them, including Callum’s favourite George Friend posed for a photo with Callum and his Brother Joshua, afterwards Callum had this to say “It was amazing especially meeting Jonathan Woodgate seeing as he played in the first game I went to.” But Callum’s fun wasn’t over yet as Middlesbrough FC invited him to the match

against Bolton the following day, putting Callum and his family up in one of the top boxes to watch the match from. This proved a fun and exciting day for Callum and his family as he was invited down to pitch side along with his brother and dad to watch the teams warm up, where he had photos taken with several of the players and watched the teams walk out before kick-off. When asked about the experience Callum had this to say, “It was brilliant I love football and I love Middlesbrough so getting to stand there at the riverside was something special.” Luckily for Callum the game proved exciting with Middlesbrough dominant throughout the majority of the match eventually coming out 1-0 winners after a 81st minute penalty on a day that saw the début of the first foreign manager in the clubs illustrious history, Aitor Karanka. The day didn’t end at the full-time whistle for Callum though as he was able to get a shirt signed by new manger Aitor Karanka and man of the match Ben Gibson, who paid the family a special visit in their box after the match.

Havant Cricket Club Situated in the north-east corner of Havant Park, is the Sports Club Pavilion, the headquarters of both Havant Hockey and Cricket Clubs. At weekends all year round The Pavilion, also known as the Clubhouse, is in regular use by either club, depending upon the season. Rebuilt in the 1960s, the Clubhouse has been the headquarters for the two sports for well over a century. The building itself is administered by the Havant Sports Club, a committee made up of members from the two constituent clubs. The Committee is hoping to rent out the Pavilion on midweek winter evenings for such clubs as Bridge, Chess, Scrabble or indeed any group who might wish to meet on a regular basis. The facilities include a well-stocked bar and a kitchen, from which hot food can be served. Members of the Sports Club would staff these facilities. The clubhouse is very adaptable and there are plenty of tables and ample seating for up to seventy.

It has also been suggested that the Clubhouse could be used as the venue for a quiz league that might meet weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending upon the interest shown. In fact it was originally formed in 1822. The club has records going back well over a century including a game in the late 19th century between ourselves and Portsmouth CC in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle took part. Since the beginning of competitive cricket in the mid-1970s the club has played a leading part in the prestigious Southern League, winning the Championship 12 times; the last in 2011. As a public park, the ground is highly regarded nationally and the club regularly reach the later stages of the National Cup.

Women’s Olympic Sailing Hayling Island’s 19-year-old Eilidh McIntyre has joined forces with Sophie Weguelin to campaign to win gold in the Rio Olympics 2016. Eilidh’s father Mike McIntyre won Olympic gold in 1988, in the Star Class. The Girls have formed ‘Team 3,2,1’ (3 Sails, 2 Girls and 1 Dream) as a means of fundraising to help finance their expensive 2-3 year campaign for gold in the Women’s Olympic 470 Class. ‘Team 3,2,1’ has already arranged a fundraiser on Saturday, 12 April at Hayling Island Sailing Club. It will be a Black tie affair, with guest speakers, an auction, a three course meal and a chance to be part of their journey! Eilidh said on the Yachting World Blog “The light wind wasn't usually something we tend to favour, but it's not been a struggle this week. We've done a lot of training before the regatta and we felt pretty confident going in. It's just nice to know that we've got good pace, which is always helpful, and it's nice to know that we're able to handle ourselves in tight situations." The pair are European bronze medallists, have previously won the EUROSAF Champions Cup title in Kiel, but this marks their first World Cup victory since teaming up last January. In the latest ISAF World Rankings released on 3 February, Sophie and Eilidh have moved up two places to be ranked world number 1 in their Class for the first time! The ISAF World Cup 2014 action moves back to Europe now and the next event in the series is in Palma, Majorca at the end of March. The members of Denmead Bowling Club are opening the door to non members to visit the Club and have a go at playing bowls. The Club is in the King George V Playing Fields, Ashling Park Road, Denmead (the hedged in area behind the large car park) Although many members play at a reasonably high level, it is recognised that not everybody wishes to play at that level. For that reason social bowling and friendship is very much part of Clubs ethos and enjoyed by all members. Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club at Crystal Palace 2014 Training Camp

The Havant & Waterlooville Swimming Club squad held a training camp at the prestigious Crystal Palace long course training facility over the weekend 24 – 25 January. The youngsters used the opportunity as part of their long term development training and crucial preparation for the county championships in March. The county championships this year will be held over three weekends. The initial weekend, for relay and long distance events, will be on the 1/2 March at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth in the full sized 50 metre long course pool. The following weekend, 8/9 March, the Championships move to the Havant & Waterlooville Leisure Centre Pool in Waterberry Drive, Waterlooville, for the age group events. The third weekend, 15/16 March, back at the Mountbatten Centre, is for the County Youth County Championships, age 14 years and over. The two-day Crystal Palace training camp provided the Havant & Waterlooville squad with14 hours of pool and dry side training sessions, an educational classroom session and on Saturday evening after training a fun but serious team building session . The training camp was a major opportunity for the squad to work intensively with Senior Club Coach Graham Pople on many aspects of their swimming techniques. For many of the younger swimmers it was a first opportunity to train independently away from their parents and

families. The swimmers completed 10k each day in the long course pool and hundreds of exhausting sit ups, squat thrusts and pressups in the gym. Classroom sessions featured revealing footage from the Club’s new underwater camera, of the swimmers pool training sessions. Many key technical issues were highlighted and a DVD of world class swimmers a comparison of techniques! The prime goal for the weekends training was to help fast swimming and for some, hopefully, winning medals at the forthcoming county championships and qualifying for regional and national championships later the year. It gave swimmers the opportunity in different waters, in a long course pool to see where they were on key qualifying and medalling times. Crystal Palace has always provided superb support, balanced meals and almost exclusive use of the quality facilities. After comfort food for the journey home with birthday cake supplied by the Huggins family (happy birthday Rory) the exhausted team boarded the coach supplied so generously by the Emsworth Coach Company - in conjunction with Postcode Publications - sore but better athletes for the experience. Needless to say the journey home was infinitely quieter than the outward journey to the 2014 Crystal Palace training camp.

A Hawkeye Report from Ian Radcliffe and Tim Randall What an exciting time for Hawks fans! After a slow start to the campaign everything is now taking off. After a masterly 4 -1 winning performance on 4 February in the QuarterFinals of the FA Trophy against strong Skrill Premier Opponents Aldershot Town, Hawks eagerly await the two leg semi final showdown with local rivals Gosport Borough for a place in the Cup Final at Wembley. Manager Lee Bradbury said “We [still] have two difficult games with Gosport to negotiate.” He added that he never went to Wembley as a player but going as a Manager would be great. He is aware that for everyone at the Club and the supporters it would be a day out to remember. On a salutary note, the club did reach the Semi-finals of the FAT once before only to be denied a trip to the final. So come on Hawks lets do it this time and with some style! The Semi-Final dates are Saturday 15 February at Westleigh Park with the return a week later on 22 February at Gosport’s Privett Park ground. Both matches kick off at 3.00 pm. There was a large crowd for the match in spite of the downpour and high winds and was reminiscent of the FA Cup game against the now Premiership club Swansea City that coincidently also ended in a 4 – 1 victory for the Hawks. As if all that was not enough, Hawks also face a home Semi-final match in the Hampshire Senior Cup against AFC Portchester of the Wessex Premier League, to be played on a date to be agreed in the

w/c 3 March. The other side of this Semifinal draw is Gosport Borough v Basingstoke Town. The best news of all coming out of the Club is that manager Lee Bradbury has just signed a contract extension, keeping him at the Club until May 2016. It is important, with so much going on, to keep in mind the effect that the inclement weather is having on the Hawks in the League. Due to the incessant rain they have played only two league matches in 2014. The log jam has inevitably dropped them down the Conference South table but Hawks are still well placed to contend for a play-off place with six - eight games in hand on most opponents. It will however be a testing time. The team faces playing three times a week for most of the remainder of the season and the resilience of the squad and the management skills of Lee Bradbury and his staff will be tested to the full. On this front, with the club earning a sizable addition in revenue from their FAT cup exploits, Scott Donnelly, has been added to the squad from Farnborough. Donnelly is currently amongst the top scorers in the Conference South charts and will be a useful addition to bolster the Clubs goal scoring options. Havant Borough Council is urging residents to sign up and show their support for Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 23rd March, 2pm. Setting off from Staunton Country Park there are three distances to choose from one, three and six Miles (different start times depending on distance). A BANK HOLIDAY CHALLENGE TO REMEMBER Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance are calling upon supporters to sign up for an epic endurance challenge around the coastal path of the Isle of Wight on August Bank Holiday (23rd – 24th August) this year. New for 2014, and set to become a classic in the UK’s endurance calendar, the Isle of Wight Challenge is for those who want a tough but rewarding challenge and who appreciate spectacular scenery and a great sense of camaraderie. Participants can choose between the full island loop of 100km, or the 56km ‘half’ Island challenge, taking in areas of outstanding natural beauty with spectacular coastlines, dramatic white cliffs and sandy beaches. Most will walk it at their own pace, some will jog bits of it, and a few will even run the full distance ultramarathon style. Ellie Staley and her cousin Bethany Rimington Staley have a very personal reason for deciding to take on the Isle of Wight Challenge. Ellie’s sister Evey was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by HIOWAA the night that she died on 24th August 2012. Evey was ten years old when the car she was travelling in with her parents was hit by a driver who was two and a half times over the drink drive limit. Thanks to HIOWAA, Evey’s family had the opportunity to say good bye to her, something that they are eternally grateful for. John Perry, Chief Executive of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance commented ‘With our close connections with The Isle of Wight, we are hoping that this challenge will appeal to our supporters both from the

Island and further afield. At nearly 6,000m, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the six day trek is not for the faint hearted. However, anyone who is reasonably fit should be able to make the ascent, and what better way to start the New Year than with a resolution to achieve a personal goal and help save lives at the same time? For Matthew Davis from Upton, Near Andover, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an opportunity to celebrate the life of his daughter Lily, who was conveyed to Southampton General Hospital by HIOWAA in 2102. ‘We are eternally grateful to the Air Ambulance for everything that they did for Lily. She would have been three years old on 1st January 2015, and we see the Kilimanjaro trek as a great way to

celebrate her life and raise funds and awareness for HIOWAA’, commented her mother, Felicity Davis. Mr Davis will be joined by Lily’s uncle, Doug Evans. The trek will be led by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Community Fundraiser, James King, who will be there to spur participants on when the going gets tough, and to offer training and fundraising tips throughout 2014. James commented ‘We have had an amazing response to our Kilimanjaro call to action and this will be an important fundraising opportunity for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance in 2015. We need more people to take up the challenge, and to make it their New Year’s resolution to ‘Reach New Heights and Help Save Lives’. Postcode Publications Victoria Edwards – Cornwall Badge The 16th January 2014 saw Scouts, leaders, friends and family gathered at the Spinnaker Tower to see Victoria Edwards receive the Cornwall Scout Badge, the highest honour which can be bestowed upon a Scout. But then again Victoria is no ordinary 14 year old girl! 3½ years ago Victoria suffered a stroke, an affliction associated with older folk and not a then 11 year old girl! Left partially paralysed (she is unable to use her left arm) and partially sighted in both eyes Victoria spent the following 5½ months in hospital and a further period of time in rehabilitation. Victoria has also been diagnosed as suffering from a brain tumour. But despite all this Victoria has faced these challenges with immense courage, and with great support from her parents, overcame the barriers which her disabilities presented to lead a full and active life. The evening was planned with Victoria knowing that she would be receiving an award but with no idea of which award. She was interviewed by Adam Jolley, County Scout Commissioner for Hampshire, who asked Victoria what she liked about Scouting, her reply … “I enjoy camping, being outdoors and being with friends” and on the current thorny camping issue of “Muddy or Sunny” Victoria felt that “camping is nice in the sun but it wouldn’t be fun without it being muddy!” Adam outlined how Victoria had achieved her Gold Chief Scouts award

The Cornwell Scout Badge The Cornwell Scout Badge is awarded in respect of pre-eminently high character and devotion to duty, together with great courage and endurance. It is restricted to Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and Scout Network Members. Both the bronze badge and the cloth emblem of the same design may be worn. John 'Jack' Travers Cornwell, a Scout in the St. Mary’s Mission Group, Manor Park, London, entered the Royal Navy in 1915. It was wartime and training was brief, but Jack, helped by his days in Scouting, was able to adapt quickly. On 31 May 1916 while serving in HMS Chester, Jack was struck by a shell splinter. Grievously wounded, he stayed at his post awaiting orders until he was relieved at the end of the battle. On reaching port, Jack was transferred to a hospital in Grimsby and three days later he died a national hero. For gallantry he was given both the Victoria Cross and the highest Scouting award, the Bronze Cross. To commemorate the courage shown by Jack, The Scout Association created ‘The Cornwell Scout Badge’ in his memory. In 2013 there were 4 awards of the Cornwall Badge. TWENTIETH SHOP OPENS IN TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY YEAR The Rowans Hospice is opening its twentieth charity shop at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth on Wednesday 22nd January, in the Hospice’s 20th Anniversary year. The Rowans Hospice Trading Company was formed prior to the opening of The Rowans Hospice to support fund-raising for a local hospice. It has grown from just one shop in Fratton Road to 20 shops located throughout the Hospice’s area of care, with a further two more planned to open in 2014. The shop in Gunwharf Quays will be a unique boutique, specialising in vintage and upcycled clothing and goods and it is the only charity shop located at the shopping centre. This has been made possible through a ‘Charity of the Year’ partnership with Land Securities who manage the site. Sean Sweeney MBE, Centre Manager at Gunwharf Quays, comments: “We’re delighted to welcome The Rowans Hospice store to Gunwharf Quays. As our charity partner we want to support the vital work of the hospice in any way we can. This is an exciting new concept charity shop that will give people the chance to pick up unique vintage and upcycled items while raising

funds for the local service provided by The Rowans Hospice.” Anne Yendell, Director of Finance & Operations at The Rowans Hospice, said: “We are very excited to be opening our twentieth shop at Gunwharf Quays; this is an excellent location for us and will give The Rowans Hospice exposure to a wider audience. The British Earthquake And Tsunami Support foundation, which was set up after the devastating tsunami hit South East Asia on Boxing Day 2004 by members of the congregation at St John’s Church in Southbourne, has been working hard to help an orphanage in Aceh as well as two others in Medan, Indonesia. In this edition, we speak to some of the local sponsors living in the PO9&PO11 area, who tell us their story of their visit to Indonesia. These are sponsors who are currently supporting some of the children living at the orphanage in Medan and Aceh: Elaine Hooper, from Southbourne (left) said "I went to visit the orphans and children in Indonesia in 2011. I was so struck by their thankfulness for BEATS and the genuine appreciation for the support the children and young people receive. I was overwhelmed with how little they have and their willingness to give to us. Most of the orphans live in poverty but are far happier than most families here in the UK. Their attitude to education and respect for their school uniform is quite humbling. I would encourage anyone to think about sponsoring a young person or teacher as it has changed my outlook on how much we have and how little they have. Listening to their stories of survival from the disaster they faced is quite incredible; clinging to life

and losing so much, yet still full of hope and willingness to give to others. Going out to Indonesia has made me much more aware of the wonderful work that BEATS are doing. It is not just about our giving to the children but it is also about building relationships, showing our love to them by spending time with them and taking personal messages to them from their sponsors. The children and families welcomed us warmly with thanks and gratitude for the support we give. Meeting my sponsored child was a wonderful experience. I felt welcomed and embraced immediately by his whole family. I feel privileged to have been able to meet him and be welcomed into his home." Geoff and Janice Collett (right), who live in PO10, sponsor Hema, a young lad who is living at YACAN Children's Home, Medan, Indonesia and who is a victim of the 2005 Nias Island earthquake. Geoff visited Indonesia in 2008 with Sarah Page, the charity's Chairperson. In his usual dry sense of humour, Geoff says, "A trip to Indonesia leaves a lasting impression, if nothing else of the climate. The constant high temperatures day and night, together with the high humidity, make it a challenge to Westerners. A thunderstorm with torrential downpour is something to be welcomed; it is an excuse to run into the street with very little on, enjoy the drop in temperature and luxuriate in the rain. The

downpour does have a negative side, in that it makes the frogs croak even louder! At night, when the noise of the traffic has dropped a few decibels, the frogs are a constant background noise; but, if you go with the flow, it could lull you off to sleep, as long as the necessary air conditioning is not too noisy!" 27 year old Chris Johnson from Southbourne (pictured above) went out to Indonesia in 2012 to provide educational support to the YASAH orphanage, which looks after more than 100 children. He stayed out there for three months where he taught English and kept a diary of his time out there. An extract of which is as follows: “I arrived at the YASAH orphanage, which translates as "Streams of living water and grace foundation”, after a very long flight. The orphanage was home to over 100 children who were sleeping in girls’ and boys’ dorm rooms on bunk beds. I was given a room to myself, which I felt extremely grateful for. Something which struck me about this place, was that despite there being more than 100 children, there are no toys whatsoever here. They have a few footballs but the children make do with what they can find – I have even seen them playing with rocks and sticks. In spite of this, you

rarely see a sad, upset or bored child and it caused me to make a stark comparison to the privileges I had in my own country. When I was brought into the school, I was introduced to several classes of children and I would be teaching a range of ages, from 9-16. As with every class there are a range of abilities in them, but sometimes the ability gap seems huge. In one of the classes it was particularly noticeable. There was one child who managed to learn the numbers 1-999 in a single lesson. On the next desk however there was another child, who, after 3 lessons can barely say 1-10. It just goes to show that it really is possible to make a difference, no matter how big or small, and those children really appreciated being taught first hand and enjoyed the learning processes. Despite the trial and tribulations, I really enjoyed the teaching. It does make me smile when I teach them one thing and they next day they are using it in conversation with me. There is one girl, Bella, who I am determined to get up to a near perfect level of English before I go. Her English is already pretty good so it won't be that hard!”

On the 22nd January “Off the Level” Theatre Company came to Warblington School to perform to our Year 7 and 8 students. The aim of the production was to highlight that we use our rail crossings many times a day and rarely think of the dangers. The play highlighted the repercussions of making split-second decisions to take a risk and focused on the fatalities of two young people in the Hampshire area. From their

A group of our students were asked to help film a documentary for TV, shown on Meridian Television on 5th February. “Recently we met with Ian Carter to talk about safety at railway crossings. Ian decided to race under the gates at a crossing near his home and this action caused him to injure himself as he collided with the crossing gates.

He realised that his actions were dangerous and he applied to Fixers (a charity which gives young people the chance to share a safety message) to campaign for funding to make a video to raise awareness around railway safety. I really enjoyed listening to Ian because it made me think about the dangers of jumping the gates at the crossing.”

HAVANT’S OWN CREMATORIUM ‘THE OAKS’ OPENS Providing a state of the art facility, minimising environmental impact and providing a high standard of service were the key drivers for the Southern Co-operative’s new Crematorium which is now open situated off Bartons Road in Havant. Designed by Stuart Bone of PWP Architects Ltd, the building appears to rise out of the 8.5 acre landscape, with oak cladding and flint work to the walls and is topped with a green Sedum roof which also gives precious ‘green’ habitat for local flora and fauna. Bereaved families can choose music from an almost infinite library via the Wesley media service or a digital organ or piano for more traditional services.Visual life tributes of video, photos and music can also be played on large multimedia screens. Family and friends in the UK or anywhere abroad who can’t make the funeral can still view the service via a securely transmitted web cast. All of these audio visual services can also be recorded. The Oaks can accommodate up to 200 people for a funeral, with seating for 86 in the service hall, which has views through 6 metre high windows, from floor to ceiling, over a private planted courtyard and onto the ancient woodland beyond. With two cremators capable of accommodating 1.1metre wide coffins and up to 286kg in weight, funerals of larger people now no longer have to travel outside of the local area to complete their funeral which up until now has been the case. Funeral services last up to 45 minutes 15 minutes longer than the local area has also been used to. Roddy added: “We accommodate traditional religious or secular funeral services here for any culture and ethnicity as well as any other alternative forms of farewell, making it a celebration of a life well lived, rather than the death that has just occurred”

Westbourne’s new Oak Villagers have celebrated the planting of a new tree by their parish hall, to replace a much-loved beech that had to be cut down after standing for hundreds of years. The new tree, a red oak, was planted by Rev Frank Wright, rector of St John's parish church in Westbourne, and Peter Couzens, a member of the congregation, in a ceremony attended by church members last Sunday. Mr Couzens donated the tree in memory of his late wife Christine. Mr Wright said: "We were all sad when the huge old beech tree reached the end of its life and became unstable, and had to be cut down. The new one is a lovely way to remember Christine, who is very much missed too. We planted the new tree in the hope that when people in the village pass it, they'll think about the hope of renewal that God gives each of us."
