SUMMER 2012 In just a few weeks, kids will be out of school for the summer. Some will take trips, some will attend summer school or hang out with their friends, and some will go to summer camp. Summer camp is all about great memories, fun and friends. But a summer camp experience offers far more than that. Children lucky enough to attend summer camp are in for a real treat. Research suggests a good summer camp not only teaches new skills and attitudes but provides a fun, safe, and relaxed environment to develop self-confidence, independence, and leadership. Summer camps also help diminish the summer learning loss that effects every child. Summer learning loss is the loss in academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer vacation. The loss in learning varies across grade level, subject matter, and family income. A common finding across numerous studies is that on average, students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning of summer, on the same test. Summer loss for all students is estimated to be equal to about 1 month. In response to this unfortunate occurrence, PP&R SUN Community Schools have added Love-to-Learn camps to our summer programming. All of our summer classes and activities have some learning hidden in the day to day activities. Our goal has always been to keep kids thinking and staying active and focused during the longest out of school time of the year. However, a Love-to-Learn camp goes beyond the general overall hidden learning components. It has learning objectives and a written curriculum developed to age appropriate standards. The fun ties into the learning, rather then the learning tying into the fun. Love-to-Learn camps focus on everything from theatre and digital photography to 3-D animation and environmental studies. Loveto-Learn camps are identified by an apple in the course title. Search for the apple when choosing your summer camps and put an end to the summer brain drain!

Never Trust A Penguin by Michael Wehrli Peggy and Zach are having the strangest day of their lives! Thinking they are late for school Peggy and Zach come bursting into the classroom to find… no one there. After several tense minutes alone, they have a series of strange and hilarious encounters with many weird characters. A paranoid janitor, an insane health inspector, Sappy the safety clown, a detective that sounds like he’s from the 1940s, a girl that believes she’s a pixie, and a penguin, are just some of the weird and funny characters that Peggy and Zach meet on the craziest day at school ever. This hysterical comedy gives young actors a chance to play wonderfully outrageous roles.

The Kid Who Ran For President “Hi! My name is Judson Moon. I’m 12 years old and I’m running for President of the YOU-nited States.” So begins this fast-paced, funny, and surprising play, based on the book by Dan Gutman, of a boy’s run for the White House in the year 2000. This ensemble play features many hilarious characters. Judson is pushed into the election and before he knows it, he is a serious Third Party candidate who really makes waves! “Grown-ups have had the last one thousand years to mess up the world,” Judson tells a reporter, “Now it’s our turn.” Prior experince in theatre classes or shows is recommended. 373281 M-F 9am-3pm Wehrli Aud 7/9-7/20 $250

How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide onsite support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support the participant & accommodate their individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call (503) 823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant. Register On-Line at www.PortlandParks.org
