for adopting Sellwood Park in Southeast Portland Your donation of $100,000 per year for ten years to maintain the park shows your dedication to parks and to your community.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

Why this is important? This allows us time to either 1) contact participants on the waiting list or 2) cancel the class if the enrollment drops below the minimum required. If you withdraw less than 3 business days in advance: the cancellation or transfer is subjected to being prorated for the first class & any other classes that have already occurred at the time of withdrawal. Remember, the earlier you notify us of a withdrawal, the more we can credit or refund you. How will I receive my refund? • Payments made with checks or cash will be refunded by a check issued through the Portland Parks & Recreation accounting system. Please allow at least 10 days for processing time. • Payments made with Visa or Mastercard will be credited back to the same charge card.

What classes or activities would you like to see at Sellwood Community Center? Are you an instructor or can you refer an instructor to us? We are open to anything and everything (well, almost everything!) Call Patty at 503.823.3195!

Thursday 10-11am #378361 (6/28-7/26) My years in coaching and working at MSCC have taught me the value of teaching sound fundamentals as the basis for building any fitness program. I observe many people (of all ages) who begin programs with great hopes and after a time, fall away simply because they have not mentally prepared themselves for the work they are asking their bodies to do. Any goal you set begins with a small first step.

I enjoy working with all populations, from those who have never walked into a gym to those who can’t stay away. It’s rewarding to help people who are intimidated by the gym to feel comfortable and safe while working out. For those who exercise on a regular basis it’s important to change your program so you don’t plateau or become bored with your workout.

Ruth Waldstein Thursday 5-6pm #378362 (6/21-7/19)

Marc Brewer Tuesday 6-7pm

#378363 (6/26-7/24) “Get healthy and live longer”. Start with an individual program that rejuvenates your body. I offer common sense guidance for losing weight and finding your own balance of exercise and positive attitude. Enjoy exercise strategies that improve flexibility, power and endurance.

Let me light your fitness fire. More activity raises our quality of life exponentially. My process evolves with each client’s activity level. Our family activity is what makes exercise a sustainable behavior. It is a fact that we gravitate towards parents’ habits or our children’s interests. I can design a dynamic routine for you and your whole family using movement to determine results. Using encouragement and acceptance along with a fun exercise program with repetition, you will love to “work out” with me. I emphasize safety and keep it fun. I am confident that with my personal attention, together we can get as close to your fitness goal as each client desires.

The City of Portland will make reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities. Please notify us no less than five (5) business days prior to the event by phone 503-823-4328, or by calling the City’s TTY at 503-823-6868, or by the Oregon Relay Service at 1-800-735-2900.

South Parks Maintenance Team

Small but Mighty! Jeff Milkes

South Services Zone Manager Portland Parks & Recreation In November 2011, Portland Parks & Recreation was awarded the National Recreation and Park Association’s highest honor, the “Gold Medal for Excellence,” placing the bureau among the most elite park departments in the country and recognizing what the people of Portland have known for the past 150 years – that Portland is truly a city of stellar parks. As a testament to this award, over 85% of respondents in a survey conducted by the City rated our park system very highly, which makes it clear to me that Portland loves their parks. Portland Parks & Recreation is the steward of more than 11,000 acres of land at 250+ locations including community and neighborhood parks, natural areas, recreational facilities, gardens, and trails. Caring for this historic system is an enormous responsibility – one that we take very seriously. The inner south part of the city spans from the Willamette River to I-205 and from I-84 to the border with the City of Milwaukie. This area is home to some of the real gems of our system: Laurelhurst, Sellwood, Kenilworth, Mt Scott, and Woodstock parks, the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, and Ladd’s Addition Rose Gardens, to name a few. These parks help to define the character of the city, and help us to understand our city’s history – as several of these parks were built almost a century ago. The team that maintains this zone is small but mighty. Consisting of nine full-time employees and one supervisor, this team does an amazing job keeping your parks safe, clean, and green. Everyday, playground structures are inspected for safety, garbage cans are emptied, restrooms are cleaned, picnic areas are readied for permit holders, graffiti is removed, irrigation systems tuned up to run efficiently – the list goes on and on. The south maintenance team provides an unparalleled level of service. Let me introduce you to a few:
