MAYOR & COUNCIL

MAYOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to Aurora’s Fall 2017 Parks, Recreation & Culture Program Guide. Thank you to our summer camp staff and students for another great year of fun, adventures and learning. I wish all our students much success as they prepare for the new school year. This is a special year for Canadians. Our beautiful country is celebrating its 150th birthday! I encourage everyone to discover Canada’s parks, heritage spaces and museums. Let’s celebrate being proud Canadians. To commemorate Canada’s milestone birthday, the Town has planned several events. During the summer, residents and visitors participated in events celebrating indigenous traditions and performances at the New Beginnings Pow Wow. Participants also enjoyed music from iconic Canadian cover bands at Concerts in the Park. This fall, participate in Canadian-themed events such as the Colours of Fall Concert and Aurora’s Youth Innovation Fair.

Remember to get active and stay healthy this fall. Take advantage of the Town’s renovated recreational facilities and affordable programs. Try a yoga class, enjoy creating a new culinary dish or learn how to swim. There are a variety of courses for youth, adults and seniors. Explore aurora.ca to find out more about Aurora. To access an electronic version of the guide, please visit aurora.ca/recguide. Sincerely,

Mayor Geoffrey Dawe

SWIMMING LESSON INFORMATION

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SWIMMING LESSONS Support your child’s learning through participation in the recreational swimming programs. Set realistic goals for your child, encouraging them to do their best. Learning to swim can be enjoyable, but like many skills, it takes time, practise and patience. It is important to remember that each swimmer advances at his/her own pace. Not completing a level the first time, or even the second time, simply means there are important skills to continue to improve upon. Success in swimming lessons comes in many different forms - learning new skills, increasing confidence, and gaining a feeling of accomplishment.

WHAT LEVEL SHOULD I REGISTER IN? Visit our pool and one of the Aquatic Staff can assist you in determining what level to register in. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers free swimming lesson assessments. Please contact the Deck Supervisor on duty to request a screening during scheduled leisure swim times.

REPEATING A LEVEL? Show your last report card to the Instructor to allow practise time on skills requiring development. To progress to the next level, all items must be completed.

LESSON START TIME Participants should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time (not earlier). You may wish to escort your child to their lesson on the first day to meet the Instructor. Please remove outdoor shoes in the shower area and pool deck.

20

DECK SUPERVISOR There is a designated Deck Supervisor on deck and available to answer your questions or concerns. They also provide a link between you and the instructor. Ask and the Deck Supervisor will be happy to assist you.

CHANGE ROOM ADMITTANCE GUIDELINE For the comfort of all patrons, children 7 years of age and older must use the appropriate change room of their own gender. If this is not suitable a family change room is available.

PARENT’S DAY Parent’s Day will take place during the 5th lesson. Parents are invited on deck to watch their child’s swimming lesson and take pictures. Classes will end 5 min. early to give parents the opportunity to talk to their child’s instructor about their progress. If you wish to visit on deck, please remember to remove your shoes! Please note that picture taking is only permitted on Parent’s Day

MAKE-UP LESSONS Occasionally lessons may be cancelled due to pool fouling, mechanical, or chemical problems. Makeup classes due to participant’s illness or personal commitments will not be available. Dry-land water safety lessons are part of all learn-to-swim programs. Where a pool may close in an untimely manner, Instructors will use the time to focus on dry land water safety. If this is not possible, a credit may be issued for the missed class.

PARKS & TRAILS PEDESTRIAN TRAIL SYSTEM The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town Facilities and open space corridors. At present the Town maintains approximately 57 kilometers of trails. Come out and enjoy a leisurely hike through the natural valley land setting of mixed forests, meadows and wetland habitats of the Holland River Valley Trail. This trail is Aurora’s longest trail corridor stretching from Vandorf in the south (just west of Bayview Avenue) all the way up to St. John’s Sideroad at Industrial Parkway North. The trail corridor links municipal facilities such as the Town Hall, the Senior’s Centre and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex as well as the Aurora Community Arborteum, Sheppards Bush and Lambert Willson Park. Another significant trail corridor is the Willow Farm, Lakeview Trail system, a trail linking parks and linear open space corridors within the forested hills of St. Andrews in northwest Aurora. The topography is very undulating as the trail rises up to one of the highest points elevation within Aurora. All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks. Please note that our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times.

COMMUNITY PARKS & SPORTS FACILITIES The town currently has over 75 parks and open space areas including 36 playgrounds encompassing over 700 acres, 3 children’s water-play splash pads, 35 soccer fields, 18 ball diamonds and a wide variety of other recreational activities. Please come out and enjoy what Aurora has to offer! For further information please visit www.aurora.ca/thingstodo

MEMORIAL TREE & PARK BENCH DEDICATION PROGRAM Would you like to establish “Lasting Roots” in your community? Are you looking for a unique gift idea for that special person or occasion? Perhaps you feel like making an investment in greening your community? AURORA ADOPT-A-PARK IS YOUR CHANCE TO GROW WITH THE COMMUNITY

EMERALD ASH BORER

Over 700 acres of Parkland, an outstanding Trail System and friendly treelined streets contribute to Aurora’s natural beauty and make it a place we are proud to call home.

The Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive insect that kills all types of healthy ash trees. The insect was discovered in Aurora in 2011. While the Emerald Ash Borer poses no risk to human health, it is a significant threat to our forests.

Did you know that the Adopt-A-Park program provides local businesses, community groups and residents with the opportunity to enhance the environment and beautify our town by assisting with the maintenance and developement of Aurora’s parks and trail systems?

The town currently has a vendor in place to provide treatment services to combat the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer.

• Creating the opportunity for citizens to support our parks and green spaces • Sharing the responsibility for a clean community • Developing opportunities for youth involvement • Building community pride and a sense of ownership in our parklands

The contract will provide for the preventative application of a pesticide approved in Canada that has shown to protect ash trees from the EAB. Approximately 2,000 publicly-owned trees along boulevards and rights-of-way have been identified in the Town’s street tree inventory as potential candidates for treatment. Trees meeting the treatment criteria will be marked by Town staff with a small but highly-visible painted dot. Also, through the terms of the contract, residents who wish to protect ash trees on their private property will have the option to contract with our vendor for the same price as the Town. Property owners wishing to
